unlikely - yes and no. Based on the team getting a shake up at Alibaba for qwen - and the amazing output of qwen 3.5 27B - its likely that qwen 3.6 will be mainly closed source, with smaller models open sourced to lure people in to use the larger models for API to generate revenue. I work at one of the big labs - we are all sitting on twitter hitting the refresh button every day to see what they cook up.
I cant say which AI company I work for, but you can guess. They pretty much distill our models to build their models - so its interesting to see how they create the architecture.
I thought so too. I know training is expensive as hell, but that is only because they put all the money in software research and not hardware. Photonic GPUs are around the corner and , well since Claude Code got leaked, it honestly frusting that they market themselfs as "open source" but are action just stealing like anyone else.
Right, but both qwen and wan are alibaba cloud - while they're not required to be bound at the hip with respect to releases, and the comments were motivated by questions raised by the qwen team departures, they've included wan and qwen image etc in their comments about os release commitments. Given wan 2.5 wasn't open, while 2.2 was - I'd be more excited seeing wan2.6 over qwen3.6 since they just released another llm.

Qwen 3.6 Plus is proprietary model
coder543@reddit
Nobody knows. Plus is one of their proprietary models, and they just released a proprietary Omni model this week too.
If they wanted to reassure people that they will still be making open releases, they aren’t showing it. Hopefully they will.

I remember a post on here a few days ago with a screenshot of a tweet where they said future models are still open weights
ShengrenR@reddit
right, but it doesn't mean they will/have-to for each and every. I'll believe them when I can download wan 2.6 :)
-dysangel-@reddit
the comment about open releases was specifically with the worries at the time surrounding Qwen models after important members of the Qwen team left
