The extractor is just a little metal hook that grabs the rim of the cartridge and pulls it out of the chamber.
The first run of Springfield SA-35s had an issue with fragile extractors, but nothing was exploding.

It's not just the engraving they are charging extra for, the "deluxe models" have fancier grips and come with a "leather" carry case with a combination lock and they still only give you one magazine. It's like a $300-$400 markup compared to the non-engraved gold versions if you could get them on sale. Hell I think I got my gold Regard for like $100 more then the standard one during a sale.
