Complete line drawings or CAD drawing of sailboats

Are there any great resources for cad drawings or line drawings of popular or high end sailboats? I'm super intrigued by boat design and would love to study drawings and play with them in 3D modeling programs.

Sailboatdata has line drawings

Thanks you. Found only profile drawings, maybe plans but no sections on Sailboat data.

Your best option is to go to the original designers, they will have the drawing for all their boats. I have a 1967 40' sailboat that was designed by Wm. Tripp. I got a hold of Tripp Design and the happily sent me a copy of their original line drawings for the boat.

There’s a great MIT boat design course free online

Thank you!! I will look for that!!!

Maybe you’re interested in classic designs, no longer patent protected? https://www.spinsheet.com/news/herreshoff-boat-plans-and-images-now-available-online

Yes! This the kind of information I'm looking for! I had hoped to find some beautiful S&S designs I could pull lines from and make them into 3D models. Or even more modern boats to study the design differences from say a herreshoff to modern race boat or cruiser. I would assume there has to be some collective information to study yacht design. Maybe I'll look at boat design forums. Thank you for the link!!

I used to have a hair shop book with detailed plans in it. It also discussed all the aspects of engineering. I lost that hardcover first edition in a move.!
It wasn’t this particular book, but here’s something similar:
“L Francis Herreshoff Sensible Cruising Designs”

I can't seem to find the MIT link for searching the database. The spinsheet "database" link is dead. I'll dig deeper. This would be gold!!! I understand modern manufacturing has changed what is possible in boat building...a modern day herreshoff wouldn't be limited to frames and bent timber and would likely be a completely different boat but classic lines are always going to be beautiful!!! Exciting study!!

I used to sell Lagoon & Beneteau boats. Lots of time in the shipyards (factories)…they don’t share designs at all, even w dealers when we needed them for repairs or t-shirts.

SailboatData.com has line drawings and pertinent hull specs.

I have only seen profile drawings on that site. I am looking for more complete drawings (profile, plans and sections) to create 3D models. Thank you!

No. That's called intellectual property and belongs to the manufacturer. You'll have to pay money for that if they sell it to you at all.
Double-Wallaby-19@reddit (OP)
It's my understanding that is the designers intellectual property. I guess there are many instances where they hire the designer and own the right to that design though.

Boat manufacturers are not going to give away their CAD drawings for free.
There is a guy on Facebook named Dean Derusha, who runs a business that has license the 3-D models of pretty much all mass produced and notable sailboats. He does all his business through Facebook. He sells half hulls and full models at various stages of completion. If you want to make an extremely accurate model, buying a bare hull from him and finishing it yourself is probably your best bet. I’ve bought half hulls of all the boats I’ve had from him.

Thank you for the info on Dean. Super curious to know what is involved in licensing the 3D models. I am seeking drawing to build 3D CAD models. A study of the lines is what I most intrigued about. I have seen some boat designers share their complete line drawings online. Manufacturers don't own the design they simply build them so I wouldn't expect they would share the drawings. I'll take a look at Deans page. Thanks!
