Norm Reeves Mazda Irving,TX tried to add 10k to a 10k car and kicked me out for questioning it

I went to Norm Reeves Mazda in Irving, TX this past Saturday.
This is flat out scamming.
They had a 2015 Honda Civic listed for about 10,800. Then they showed me the real numbers.
They added a 3900 warranty, 995 GAP, 995 protection package, 1295 security system, and 895 in accessories. That brought the total to over 20,000.
I was not even open to negotiating because this was so insulting.
I told them politely that the price made no sense and felt wrong.
Instead of explaining anything or working with me they got defensive and basically kicked me out.
They will take advantage of people who are desperate or do not know better.
No transparency, just packed on add ons and pressure.
People need to be aware of this. If you do not ask for a full breakdown you can get taken advantage of fast.
Reddit please blow this up so more people do not get caught in this.

Keith McCoy Automotive in garland- bought a challenger listed at 15k, contract price was 21k with no add one, just had it as the price of the vehicle. No warranty. I should have read the damn papers but I was excited
nesnahekim@reddit
Wtf. Maybe I’ll find some time to go play them next week. What a bunch of scammers
widget1212@reddit
Thank you for calling them out and letting us know exactly who we should NOT do business with.
Lavaine170@reddit
They didn't kick you out, they did you a favor.
TheSpivack@reddit
Damn, trying to get $20K for an 11-year old car when you can get a brand new civic for $25K is nuts.
classifiedsavage01@reddit (OP)
They are flat out scammers.
-Nocx-@reddit
Because of the amount of information that people have now, add-ons is how they make all of their money.
An ethical dealership would ask you if you wanted to add each add on individually - most people that don’t know any better will add stuff they don’t need (probably GAP is the only useful thing - and that is usually only if you are buying a car brand spanking new) and the dealership makes it out alright.
And then you have whatever tf this was. Sorry you went through that man.
classifiedsavage01@reddit (OP)
All I want to pay is tax, title, and license.
stupid-canada@reddit
Toyota in Irving are scumbags too. Don't try them.
Empressofthemoonn@reddit
Bob Tomes Ford is also trash! They truly tried to take advantage of us, tried to have us sign on a $900 note for a vehicle that was a 2017 preowned Honda because of “mandatory packages”..they didn’t even have it on the Lot! It was being loaned out to another customer who car was being repaired by the service department smh, the miles on the listing online weren’t even accurate at this point!
ExampleLow4715@reddit
Brandon Tomes Subaru is awful as well. They tried to switch cars on us at delivery. "VINs are not the same but the car is the one you wanted. We promise. No, we don't have widow stickers for you to verify, but we promise, just sign here"
Automatic_Apple2637@reddit
I bought a certified pre-owned car from Brandon Tomes VW. My trade was paid off, so nearly 20k was going down on the deal. The first set of paperwork they gave me hade 6k added for vehicle certification. I asked why the fee wasn’t included in the advertised price of the car, then ended up walking out. End of the day they called and took the charge off if I’d come back and buy the car.
Mxracer540@reddit
That is top tier sketchy. Wow.
ExampleLow4715@reddit
Not according to r/askcarsales. Apparently, I am the problem here for (checks notes) not trusting a car dealership.
Mxracer540@reddit
Huh..who woulda thunk 😂
nonamedude55@reddit
Second this for Bob Tomes Ford. Played games/low balled on trade in value. Even pulled out the box method. Laughed and left, then got a text from sales guy a few hours later offering a whole 8k more for my trade in. Not giving them my business after that.
spoodlat@reddit
Do not deal with any of the Clay Cooley dealerships - ever. The crap I saw them pull and try to pull on people, it made me want to have a Silkwood shower every time.
stonks-stonks-stonks@reddit
Really? I went to the one in Terrell and had a solid experience. I guess there are always exceptions to the rule, but I’d be curious to what they’re pulling
ProfessorPickleRick@reddit
Just an fyi to everyone moving forward “mandatory packages” is illegal to the FTC don’t be afraid to report dealerships for doing it
kmnt@reddit
I had similar experience with them.
Consistent-Cobbler90@reddit
Piling on: Bob Tomas and Brandon Tomas dealers are scummy.
small_airplane_22@reddit
Second this, they tried increasing the price of the pre-owned car we wanted to buy by almost 5-6k adding some useless packages. When asked to remove them or give us a discount on them atleast, the salesperson looked as if he's gonna hit us and we were made to walk out of the dealership by the sales person. Very rude and bad experience.
Mxracer540@reddit
I had a bad experience with them as well for sales. I was in the need for a vehicle after totaling my old F150. I requested more info on their website on a specific vehicle. They’re like “no problem, come on in!” Then when I get there, the vehicle I was interested in was an old loaner with 5k miles (nothing on the website mentioned that nor showed a discounted price). Then claimed it was in the body shop as it was “scratched to hell.” And refused to show me the vehicle. Then tried to get me in a truck that was roughly $20k more.

Toyota in Plano / on 75 are scammers too… and in general AHs
DreamExcellent9468@reddit
You mean Toyota Richardson on 75? Toyota Plano is on 121.
giantsindfw@reddit
Yes Richardson, my bad
DreamExcellent9468@reddit
Yeah, I’ve heard awful things about Richardson. But I feel every dealership now is scam regardless of brand. I’m dreading going through the process when my lease is up and I need to hop into a new minivan.
DeepSeaDelight@reddit
That’s hilarious… Toyota of Plano is RIGHT NEXT TO their North American headquarters, right along with Park Place Lexus.
If anything, they supposedly can’t scam and I’ve heard some disgruntled salesmen there that they can’t put add-ons like they could at other dealerships because they are forced to be the “model dealer”.
lol
No_Turnip1766@reddit
Maybe they've cleaned them up then, but that dealership had loads of issues once upon a time.
No_Turnip1766@reddit
Every Toyota dealership I have been to, and I have been to many, has been full of scumbags. It's why I no longer own and likely will never own a Toyota despite them being great cars.
AssHatsR-Us@reddit
Hiley Subaru in ft worth tried to charge me a $2000 reconditioning fee for my trade in. I laughed and said you got to be kidding. Guy just stared at me. I left
LithiumDreamer07@reddit
They charge the buyer with that reconditioning fee too. At Hiley Hyundai they told me I was approved for $611/72 months to get me to come to the dealership. I asked about an 84 month term and was told 72 months was the longest term possible. Asked about a different car I liked more that was less expensive and was told it had been sold. They kept running my credit frantically the entire time I was there. I had my 18 months old with me who had just figured out that he could run. Fast. Then two hours later the finance manager comes up and says there was a hiccup with my financing but they were able to get me “a better rate” but my payment would be $627 and he would throw in their highest level “warranty” free of charge. Cool. For the “warranty” he had me sign the first page of the manufacturer warranty and told me that I was signing for my “complimentary warranty”. Pulled up a form on his computer and typed in my name and asked me if the font was okay/looked good to use for a digital signature as we went through the paperwork. Sure. Never signed anything myself digitally. Found out later when I looked at the actual that he had added a $2500 VSC contract for 60 months starting at the car’s date of first use 3.5 years prior to my purchase with my digital signature and extended the term of my loan to 84 months at a higher apr without disclosing it to me and it wasn’t on the paperwork he had printed out for me to physically sign. When i called him on it and told him to unravel the deal, or refund my 2500 down payment to make good on his “free warranty” he tried to gaslight me saying that he never said any of that he went over everything with me. Sir, the car I purchased has a bumper to bumper warranty for another 3 years and powertrain for another 7…why would i agree to pay money for an ADDITIONAL warranty i dont need?? When i repeated verbatim our conversation he switched up and said the bank had already funded the loan (the one they supposedly found at the 11th hour on a Saturday evening at 8pm) that Saturday. But would gladly extend the VSC to 10 years or cancel it for me. I was LIVID.
hotair_78@reddit
Yeah, they tried to add $2k for "special" lug nuts & tint on a used CPO. I laughed and walked out.
Was happy w subaru grapevine. They seemed straightforward with online quote I got.
NikkiVicious@reddit
We've now bought all 3 of our current Subarus from Grapevine Subaru. I think he's the internet sales manager now, John (I'm blanking on his last name... starts with an M I believe), has been amazing. We've joked that a condition of the BRZ and STI purchases was he has to teach our daughter to drive a stick shift.
Literally all 3 cars, we went in knowing what we wanted, a ballpark of what a fair price would be for all of the features/add-ons, and gave them a number that still allowed them to make some money off of it.
txpepsi@reddit
What is that? Have not bought a car in a long time. That is a new one. Wow!
Sieran@reddit
Toyota of Plano as well.
Took my down payment back in 2020 to get several allocations and sold my truck when it was delivered (over and over) to several others over and over. After months of waiting i asked for my down payment back and needed to make a scene in sales to get my check back.

Honestly I'd file a complaint with the BBB. This is absurdly unethical.
qkilla1522@reddit
The Better Business Bureau isn’t actually a bureau that investigates anything. They are a company that sells the rating and gives paying companies the ability to easily resolve negative complaints.
If you want a chance at something actually happening to a bad business the Texas Attorney General’s office. Results may vary there so you can also report to the CFPB.
TL;DR: Better Business Bureau is bullshit.
aggressive_napkin_@reddit
my experience with the AG was a final letter from them "Well, the dealer didn't answer us, you'll want to look into a lawyer to sue them individually."
...wow... gee.... fucking help you were.
Jtrader1@reddit
That's not true. BBB rating means a lot to a lot of businesses. Most older people (the people generally with the disposable income) still use BBB religiously. I have been successful in getting multiple companies to resolve issues with a single BBB review. It can take 100s or thousands of bad Google reviews to get the same result. I always say do them all. Doesn't hurt to leave more reviews at different places. They will most likely pay attention to one of them.
Current_Wrongdoer513@reddit
CFPB has been ruined by Trump. They have no interest in helping consumers.
vsg_boy@reddit
Long years ago, when it was Sammons cable, I had cancelled my service, and drove to an office to turn in my stuff. I guess I didn't get a signature or something, and they kept charging me. I responded back but kept getting one last month or two charges. Finally I got a bill from a debt collector, and I responded to them, explaining the situation, I had cancelled and returned equipment, and I ended it by saying "If I get one more letter, I'm going to write the Texas AG's office and say that you are trying to fraud me."
Honestly, don't know if that's what worked, but I never got anything else in the mail...LOL.
bearmama42@reddit
Seconding this, as much as the actual AG is a POS this office itself is great for stuff like this.
HistProf24@reddit
I didn't know this, thanks for the info.
Mrjreezy@reddit
The BBB is just a review website like an old school Yelp. They're not an agency and there's no authority. 1 star on Google is more of a hit these days.
Horns8585@reddit
I wouldn't put the BBB in the same category as Yelp or a Google review, at all. You are correct, in that they don't have any actual authority to punish businesses. But, they actually can play a vital role as a mediator between consumers and customers. They are active in getting reconciliation, some sort of mutually beneficial agreement, and often compensation for consumers that feel that they have been wronged. And, a BBB rating carries far more weight than a Yelp or Google rating.
HistProf24@reddit
I didn't know this, thanks.
spoodlat@reddit
The BBB is useless. They will take complaints about a business. But if the business doesn't respond, you are SOL. You have a better chance of going through the attorney general's office where the federal trade commission.
The BBB also pulls illegal and shady shit on their employees. I know this because they fired me when I was pregnant and had FMLA protection. The Texas Workforce/labor board had a field day with them.
SaintsandCigarettes@reddit
Nothing illegal about it, all of the add on's are clearly disclosed, if you don't want it you don't have to have it.
eyeheartmozart@reddit
he said unethical not illegal. i’m glad you’re ready to defend them though.
SaintsandCigarettes@reddit
Nobody is going to do anything about it. There's nothing illegal or unethical about clearly displayed add on's. A dealership is free to sell a vehicle for whatever they want with whatever add on's they want -- as long as they are clearly displayed to the buyer. The buyer is then free to buy or not buy the car.
I'm not defending it, I'm just explaining how the free market works.
eyeheartmozart@reddit

This very scenario is literally one of the most commonly cited examples of bait-and-switch retail fraud. Unless, of course, they listed that, as pictured, the actual retail price is higher due to “accessories” and other garbage, or are willing to remove said options to meet the listed price.
UpstairsBumble@reddit
You said a thing I don’t like! I must downvote you!
eyeheartmozart@reddit
more like it’s incorrect so i downvoted. i actually have no emotion about anything he said.
Animal-Crackers@reddit
I used to sell used cars and can break this down for you on why it's unethical.
Firstly, this is a Civic with with modest mileage which will cast a wide net for potential shoppers. But most importantly, shoppers on a budget which more often than not have poor credit. They will see the listed price, engage in the potential purchase, and may not have the financial literacy to know that they are paying double the listed price - and likely triple due to high APR. Given OPs purchase order, this is a $30,000 Civic in the end.
This type of listing and practice is extremely predatory. You're right though, that it isn't illegal. You're completely wrong that this isn't unethical or predatory. A free market is not inherently unethical or predatory, but it can produce such practices and outcomes when there are no legal guardrails.
I'm not sure how you could come to the understanding that just because something is not illegal means that it isn't unethical. You may not be intentionally defending this dealer, but you are downplaying the shady practices.

I took my 2017 Honda Civic to Vandergtiff Honda in Arlington when the dealership in Irving wouldn’t honor the recall warranty for the compressor A/C Honda had some years back.
I went to Vandergriff Honda and told them about it and the guy said “oh yeah, I know what you’re talking about. Just leave it with us and we’ll fix it”. It was 2500 dollar fix for free. They have me as a customer for life now.

You will never get car ttl and that’s it. All dealers have addons and if you don’t want them well you will have to preorder your car. If you look at that break down though how are you adding accessories? It’s used, everything about that 4square markup is something you would see on a new car not used
Itsamusicaljourney@reddit
Bought my last 3 cars without addons. Last time I didn’t even negotiate myself - used a broker for $500 who saved me 4k off MSRP. You can do it, just takes a day of calling around.
9070932767@reddit
How'd you find the broker you used?
Itsamusicaljourney@reddit
He was a writer for Jalopnik. Automatch.com I think.
unbrokenSGCA@reddit
I did last May at Vandergriff Chevy. You have to be firm or willing to walk. That finance guy spent one whole hour trying to get me to add on all kinds of shit and was severely disappointed when my answer was no. Tell them all the places you've walked from already. Come in pre-approved and willing to use the bank you're pre-approved at. Know your max monthly payment and don't back down.
One shady thing they will do is have an advertised base price and completely change that and tell you to your face that that's the price they use to get people in the door. The bottom line is that you have a list of requirements that are met for the price you are comfortable with. How they get there is up to them.
Current_Mess_9586@reddit
This is the way. I come in with my loan already secured and tell them I want that car for this price or I walk. I usually get the car for the price I want but 2x in my life I have walked away. Do your research, know what the car is worth and be a brick wall.
digitalquesarito@reddit
Yes you will. Bought my truck and my car with just TTL. I refuse to pay addons and will walk if they don’t play ball, another dealer will play ball.
SneakyCarl@reddit
Same thing happened to me at a Toyota dealership. Got taken for a ride without ever leaving my seat! Best place I've ever bought a car is CarMax. They try to get you into their service plan, which isn't the greatest, but isn't the worst, but you can say no and just do tax title and registration
Background_Shoe_884@reddit
I didn't even know you could get GAP insurance on a used vehicle.
AlmiranteCrujido@reddit
Almost certainly cheaper through your insurer.
-Nocx-@reddit
Varies by state and not every insurer offers GAP, including major insurers included but not limited to GEICO.
AlmiranteCrujido@reddit
Well, at a minimum something best checked with your insurer before going to a dealer. Might be worth switching carriers if not.
(Separately, GEICO is best avoided.)
altagato@reddit
I literally would've said take all that off except gap .... And lemme see it that way.
Altruistic_Cheek4514@reddit
Who gets gap on a USED car with a down payment????
drsfmd@reddit
Gap on an 11 year old car? How are you even getting a loan to need GAP for? It's not useful at all.
ProfessorPickleRick@reddit
Agree a competent dealership would have presented the adds in the test drive and tried to build value the take it or leave it negotiating tactic is dead in this day and age your competitor is a mile away don’t be dumb
Honestly this dealership is incompetent. Customers will go to the next dealer and say “they added 10k” and will look amazing adding 5k to the value. Freaking morons
Digitaluser32@reddit
Talking about add-ons, I bought a used compact commuter car with visible rust spots on it. And they tried to sell me the paint protection package. I laughed and said you and I both know there's rust on that car and you're telling me you put paint protection over the rust instead of fixing it? Take that off.
steveatari@reddit
You don't get that, and you get oxidation problems? It's gonna cost you a lot more than $500 I can guarantee ya that. You're gonna want that true coat.
Digitaluser32@reddit
Ha! This is really how it is!
BlisterBox@reddit
What is GAP?
-Nocx-@reddit
It’s the insurance that covers your collision if the cost of your vehicle depreciated far below what you paid for it.
More specifically -
“Optional auto coverage that pays the difference between your remaining loan/lease balance and your car's current depreciated value if it is totaled or stolen. It covers the "gap" when you owe more than the vehicle is worth, protecting you from paying off debt on a car you cannot drive”
So generally it’s for new cars, because a used car is generally so far depreciated that there isn’t much difference between the loan price and whatever it would depreciate to before the collision.
BlisterBox@reddit
Thanks!
OldTeam3012@reddit
Good points, I would add that GAP is a good idea depending the situation and can be shopped around. For example if you go private lending and not through the dealer many times a credit union offers gap for half to a fraction of dealer cost. In this example the $995 is most likely $395 to $495 via credit union. Your insurance can also offer it as I know American family and progressive I believe offer it for around $1-2.50 per month on your insurance bill and auto kicks in with a total claim if car is under loan amount.
Extended warranty on a used car that’s 11am old and above 80k miles may be a good idea depending cost vs coverage vs loan term. In many cases a 4-5 year coverage on a 3-5 yr loan can provide peace of mind and a lower cost option to major repairs. Mind you they don’t cover brakes/tires/oil etc. if it’s through a major company, covers all the expensive parts and has no to low deductible and can have repairs done at shops of your choice can actually be a good value.
All those other add ons are a money grab and not needed on a 10 yr old car little lone a new one. Many of those added coverages they added will not apply or have huge loop holes to get the dealer out of an actual claim so it’s money for the dealer, money for the covering company and the customer in the end is holding the bag.
Obj8ctiv8_08@reddit
Agreed and the cost for that GAP is crazy - my credit union has it for $500!
octorock4prez@reddit
For fun, I took a screenshot of the sales sheet and put it in chatgpt:
🚗 Base car price
That markup (\~$900) isn’t crazy by itself, but…
⚠️ The real issue: add-ons
They’ve added a lot of extras:
👉 That’s \~$8,000 in add-ons on a \~$11k car.
Most of these are:
💰 Total impact
You’re basically financing almost double the car’s value.
Not that this isn't obvious to people reading this reddit, but I would find it amusing to just do this in front of the sales guy and show him the output. Dealers work off of information asymmetry where they expect you to be uninformed.

Ethical dealership.. pretty oxymoronic. Kinda like jumbo shrimp.
badlyagingmillenial@reddit
Gap is one of the worst things you can buy from the dealer. You can get it for half price or less from your car insurance company.
-Nocx-@reddit
Of all of the things you’re being offered in terms of value that’s just generally not true. There are major insurers also do not offer GAP coverage - for example, Geico - and the extent of coverage also varies by state.
DaSilence@reddit
Gap insurance makes no sense on a used car - it’s already depreciated to the selling price based on age/mileage. Gap only makes sense on new car purchases - the insurance isn’t going to cover the full loan value, just the delta between the selling price and depreciated price at time of loss.
I’m not saying that OP couldn’t put $1k worth of depreciation on the car in a few months (certainly possible), but I’d be surprised.
Fun-Classic7746@reddit
Gap is usually more expensive with a dealership too. Just inform your insurance of your intent to buy a new car and add gap insurance through them. It’s usually only like $10 more on your monthly payment.
cluelessinlove753@reddit
1000 for GP is wild though. It’s like a $40 add-on every six months to a normal insurance policy.
Adorable-Doughnut609@reddit

AlarmedSnek@reddit
Hijacking top comments for this but just so everyone knows, double check the GAP insurance requirement/if you need it. I had a friend that got a used car with GAP insurance and USAA told him flat out that GAP isn’t for used cars, it’s for new cars that lose value driving off the lot. They specifically do not cover the gap in between the inflated used car price and the actual value of the car. This could just be be anecdotal but if they showing you GAP for a used car, please check to see if it’s even a thing.
VCoupe376ci@reddit
You can absolutely get GAP on a used car if the loan payoff exceeds the value of the vehicle.
Lyxerttt@reddit
You're (or your friend, rather) is confusing GAP with USSA's specific Car Replacement Assistance Coverage. Most large auto insurers offer their own version of replacement coverage, paying an additional percentage of the car's ACV to assist in paying off the balance of the loan. This is NOT considered GAP coverage.
GAP - Guaranteed Asset Protection - is obtained through the dealership at the time of purchase, and is available on pretty much every vehicle. This is NOT insurance.
The products that insurance companies offer is a line coverage on your policy, subject to their requirements. And, yes, most limit it to vehicles that are purchased new or within 2 years, if used. Most also require that you add it within 45-60 days of purchasing the car.
I've been in the insurance industry (specifically claims) for ~12 years. This is a super common misunderstanding for a lot of people.
AlarmedSnek@reddit
Sweet thanks for the clarification. That makes more sense.
DIY_SelfHelp@reddit
Also if you know how to wiggle in negotiations you can get GAP for free or for just a couple hundred dollars... in last 3 car purchases I've only paid $500 for it all together.
Electronic_Turn_4764@reddit
oh this explains my own misunderstanding. I assumed it was a state issue hahaha
Electronic_Turn_4764@reddit
I think this is state dependent. I live in NY now after leaving Dallas (God I miss Central Market), and GAP insurance does work on used cars here. I specifically asked both my bank and my insurance person. I asked my bank if they had GAP for Used and they did, it added about $1.50 to each payment. That combined with the warranty gave me real peace of mind (and I used the warranty well past what I paid for it).

In 2 years that car will be dead af, it was ridden harder than any hooker. Never by rental cars.

I have to agree here -- in my younger years travelling for work I would beat the ever living shit of what I was given. 30 years later my wife knows my evil giggle (think Beavis when he starts to eat sugar) when I sit in a rental. She makes sure her seat belt is extra tight. Never buy an ex fleet or rental.

I got my 2019 CX-3 in late 2019 with 36k miles on it from enterprise car sales. It’s been amazing. I’m at 102k miles now and I’ve never had a single problem. My experience was good. I’d go back if I needed another car.

I Bought a 05 Taurus in 06 with 25,000 on it and it took me to 306,000 miles. It was a rental. I paid 13 K for it and got every dollar out of it until the wheels fell off.
rezs1ckness@reddit
25k miles is a lot less than 64k on a rental car. If an average person drives 500 miles per rental you had roughly 50 drivers. Now we go to 64k and that’s now 128 people behind the wheel of that car that give zero shit on its return
Lower-Oven-9931@reddit
You’re just rehashing things you’ve heard. I and everyone I work with treats rental cars better than our own. The real reason people don’t buy rental cars is because they aren’t usually serviced the same. Enterprise services their vehicles. You sound like you’ve never rented a car.

Are we all going to ignore the 10% interest
They are literally trapping you
tbear87@reddit
I went to a Chevy dealer in Austin and they quoted me at 25% interest. I'm not joking. I told them my credit union offered me at 3.5% and they refused to run the numbers at that rate because they only work with their banks.
Ok that's fine. I only work with legitimate businesses then. Byeeee.
Boring_Connection211@reddit
Yeah they want you to use their finance cuz that's where the money's at
tbear87@reddit
Not where my money is at 🤣🤣🤣
sanlc504@reddit
Whenever you have financing from an outside party, you need to have them quote a cash out the door price. Your credit union is just going to give you a check for the price of the vehicle, so that's all the dealership sees.
tbear87@reddit
Yeah I know how to buy a car...I'm telling you this sketchy ass dealership was heavy pushing their partner banks at insane rates and didn't want to hear otherwise so I left. There's plenty of options. I'm not going to fight with some sketchy mfer to buy a used Chevy Malibu or whatever. No thanks. I will walk every time.
rezs1ckness@reddit
I’d have to ask what your credit score is because a credit union has something those banks don’t access to your money. Miss a payment they take it, bank can’t so I’m assuming your credit union is taking less risk because they can just take the payment for the vehicle.
tbear87@reddit
Ok. And? Why should the dealer care which bank takes the risk at whatever rate they choose? The dealer gets the money from the bank, the car leaves their inventory, and that's it for them.
When buying a car you aren't financing with the dealer. Offers they give you are through banks they partner with, often at higher rates than you can secure on your own (I'm guessing because they get a kick back IDK). I
f they are pushing you to finance with a particular bank it's not because they are looking out for you.
GeekyTexan@reddit
I've never had a car loan. I hate being in debt. I hate paying interest. So I've always saved up money and bought the best car I could afford. Sometimes that was a pretty decent car, and sometimes it was an old beater. But I paid cash either way.
I know dealerships like being able to get involved in the financing, but I've never had one tell me they won't take cash. And the buyer doing the financing with someone other than the dealership works out the same as cash to the dealership.
Traps86@reddit
Then you should get a loan from your credit union and pay the dealer cash, that's the only way your post makes any sense.
tbear87@reddit
That's literally what I said I was doing and the dealer refused to work with me. Your post makes no sense, actually.
Traps86@reddit

AffectionateKey7126@reddit
Prime is 6.75% so 10% for an 11 year old car isn't just atrocious assuming OP doesn't have pristine credit.
classifiedsavage01@reddit (OP)
No negative equity or trade in.
AffectionateKey7126@reddit
Yeah didn't think of it at the time but the Gap insurance was for all the charges lunging you deep into negative equity.
Visible_Sir3207@reddit
Also the even bigger scam is the internal GAP and VSC.
Basically they are tricking the customer into purchasing an insurance product that only reimburses the dealerships loss in the vehicle.
If buyers car gets totaled 3 days after purchase by an at fault and uninsured , their liability only insurance probably won’t be able collect anything close to what the vehicle is worth.
Those 2 fees essentially are insurance policies that exclusively pay out the dealership for their lost interest in the vehicle when it becomes a loss while under financing. It’s predatory as fuck, especially when shitty salesmen refer to it as if it’s an insurance policy to protect the buyer when it will literally never benefit them.
classifiedsavage01@reddit (OP)
After I calmly told them the deal felt insulting, they essentially showed me the door and said, “Good day, sir.”
I had already decided I wasn’t moving forward, but the way it was handled said everything.
They hadn’t even run my credit yet, so I have no idea where the 10% interest rate they mentioned was coming from.
Fine_Dog_6599@reddit
They usually show an ‘average’ credit score interest rate but it’s just an excuse to charge you more. If you said yes to that you’d be getting 10% regardless of your credit report.
Visible_Sir3207@reddit
And typically interest rates vary by loan length and down payment.
A reputable lender would give you a slightly lower rate I.E the 36 month loan with $5k down should have a lover rate than the 60 mo with $2k.
With $5k down the car is almost halfway paid off on day one but they probably need to you to buy that extended warranty in order to make financing a 10 year old used car on a 5yr note a “smart business decision”
rezs1ckness@reddit
It’s a simple fix you say who do you want to finance through to the finance manager he’s gonna name some banks. He will send over and they will say yes no and conditions if they have them. All you do is ask to see the response. It’s your report it’s your credit they can’t hide it. Will piss off the finance manager but you can see what the banks offered, with that said some finance manager will bump points. Aka they say they will do 6% but will go down to 4 for the sale. He’s gonna say 6 to make more money for both. If you ask to see it you take the 4 he doesn’t make his extra but you got the best rate they will offer.
Fine_Dog_6599@reddit
Oh absolutely agreed. Sadly not everyone does that amount or research and they get taken advantage of.

rezs1ckness@reddit
So what would you think your average credit score gets you? By avg I mean avg 550-650. If you are lucky 10% most likely 13+. You think someone going to a used dealership is gonna have 700+ to get less than 5% unlikely
PositionDiligent7106@reddit
It doesn’t matter what you get. It’s basic personal finance. If your credit is poor, then you think 10% loan is going to save you? No. It’s going to bankrupt you.
Bottom line, if it’s 10%, then you cannot afford the car. Youre basically asking someone else to pay for it now while you pay ut off and they don’t think you will, so to them, the risk is 10%. Some people without basic knowledge of 4th grade math and compound interest will be like “oh sweet i can get the car” without realizing this.
Overall it’s a personal decision. Hyundai is running a 0% apr x 60 months. Itll be hard to qualify but i would gun to drop that interest rate below 3%. This means that you will likely have to increase your down payment. If you cant, then you cannot afford the car.
zekesaltspider@reddit

But do you. Feel free to sign as many 10% loans you want. I’m not stopping you.
solilobee@reddit
It's not 10%! It's 9.99% :)
DrowningKrown@reddit
10% interest is about normal on a used car that old these days with prime where it is.
I've bought 2 older cars in the last couple years and have been to a shitload of dealers with a > 750 credit score. We ended up going to multiple credit unions to find better rates and the lowest we found was some small credit union nearby that offered 8.75% on a 12 year old car. Dealers were all just above 10%. We literally couldn't find anything better. The highest we saw was carvana...they offered 22% financing lmaoooo
Now NEW cars 10% you're getting fleeced. New cars have all sorts of deals for low interest financing <5%. But then again, a lot of new cars that are actually desirable are fucking abhorrent on the price in 2026. So that 5% doesn't sound so good on $30K+ out the door pricing. Not keen on spending $800 on a car note, even though that is APPARENTLY the national average roughly
Rhewin@reddit
The prime is really bad right now
BitGladius@reddit
That's less bad, especially if it's a conservative quote instead of final numbers. The prime rate is high enough, used cars tend to get higher rates, especially if they're more used. OP was looking at a very used car, and paying way more than it was worth, so banks will want a lot of interest to cover their risks.
StendhalSyndrome@reddit
The first thing I'd be asking is why TF am I paying an extra $900 on the selling price?

More and more stores are telling customers they have to pay for something on a USED vehicle. A buyer of a used vehicle never has to pay for a manufacturer or dealer add-on / addendum. Just because the car new came with XYZ security feature for $400 new… the original owner-be it the dealership or a customer off the street-already paid for that. Any time you get into this spot with a used car, just keep repeating, no, I’m not paying for that; it’s used.
I’m curious if this dealership contacted you afterward. If you want this car and don’t find something else sooner, remind them that you’re interested when they call, text, email. Eventually they might cave if they can’t find someone to scam. Stick to your guns, and remember you can’t force them not to scam people. Only you can control what you sign for / how much you pay. While you’re unlikely to buy from them, it’s not impossible that the deal becomes favorable over time.

They added a warranty, gap and probably some sort of paint protection. All of which I'm sure could be knocked off. It's quite normal for a dealer to start with everything they offer and then you remove what you aren't comfortable with.
For someone who claims they've worked in sales, this is pretty standard operations.
I sold furniture for a while, and yes, I always added on optional stuff when drafting a proposal, quote to a customer. We'd then work out details of what they wanted and didn't want.

One method to try is to negotiate over the phone. Give them an "out the door" price that includes tax. Title and license. In EU the price listed is the end price like with everything else, no state tax not included, hidden fees and all that bullshit, less pressure to get 8 year loans and extra add ons, if any. Las time I bought a car took 30 mins, paid the listed price and walked out the door. Used car prices seems to also be lot lower. In US, I bought a used CPO Mazda from a Mazda dealership and holly hell, do they take you for a ride, I had to fight with them for hours to take off all the bullshit extra add ons, protection packages, warranties and unnecessary GAP as I was already putting $10k down. After that they were rude all around with every single thing and warranty problems I had in the first year, having to contact corporate multiple times. Can't imagine a dealership like that lasting m0ore than a month somewhere else, but in US they have you by the balls and eventually you WILL have to buy a car, no matter how much they step on you.

EQwingnuts@reddit
They don't sell cars, they sell loans with interest.

TRF_27@reddit
Haha had a similar issue when we bought my wife’s new car. Previous car was paid off, and when we were planning to trade it in, they kept saying it ADDED to the price of the loan…no one could explain to me why a car I owned, was paid off, have the title, all that jazz, wasn’t going to credit and reducing the cost of the new vehicle.
They just kept telling me I must not know how credit works lol of course we just left and went somewhere else.
sensualcali00@reddit
he has no reason we'll do that to you and their service department is not any better 2015 bought a 2015 Honda CRV touring and we paid the price for it and rounded our credit was not decorated that time that we recognize that we got shafted but they just stuck in more than should've but should not be a very wonderful car reliable, but Norm Reeves I serviced that at Honda dealers in California, but indifferent city different dealer never went back and unless it had some do with that warranty because they are bad

UpstairsBumble@reddit
I don’t understand how you get scammed and ripped off. I understand that it’s shitty but how could you walk out of a dealership not knowing what you’re paying for the car you agreed to it
PikelRick@reddit
My brother isn't the sharpest tool in the shed. He's trusting and he's not resourceful. So he didn't know to check KBB before buying or that he didn't have to agree to the add-ons.
The worst part is that the car he bought ended up having transmission issues and despite overcharging him they didn't sell him a warranty so he got stuck with the cost of a transmission replacement too.
anyoutlookuser@reddit
Clay Cooley Hyundai tried to force an undercoating, ceramic wax and GPS tracker “for security”. We told them now thanks. They insisted. We left.
TXCCDFW@reddit
Their service department can suck it too. If you question their BS, on to the next service agent, who will smile and try the same crap. In the 7 years we've had this car, zero issues. We went to the dealership for the Theta engine issue, and suddenly we need A/C work. Round and round we went. Replaced three parts and still was not working right. Took it to our regular mechanic, fixed it next day.
Necoras@reddit
Grubbs near DFW tried to tack on $2-3k (which was 10% of the purchase price) as a future detailing plan. I told him I'd walk if he didn't take it off. He left it on, but discounted the car itself by the same amount. No idea if that was to get his bonus or what.
Ironically, I actually did choose to extend the warranty on the car by an additional 100,000 miles, but that was once I was past the sales guy and talking to finance. And I did so because I knew about a specific part that has a documented history of failure.
Csharp27@reddit

Went looking at new cars this weekend to replace my paid off 2020 Kia Soul.

I think I'm just going to CarMax at this point.

They do the same thing at Norm Reeves Toyota. They say you need to pay for the extra junk or that the LoJack is already installed, so you can't get the car without buying it. Oh yeah the dealerships are definitely not as they used to be even when you’re trying to buy something brand new off the lot. I was at Ewing Buick GMC Monday because I wanted a Sierra 3500 Dually(They had it on the lot and on the showroom floor) I had a cash money in had(my debit card) ready but was told that I couldn’t drive anything off the lot because the ones that I had belonged to another dealership and it would be extra 22,500 to do a “dealership to dealership” transfer. On top of the truck already being 105,000 I was like where is the other dealership so I can go there and they had the nerve to tell me that customers can’t deal with dealerships that give other dealership loaners I laughed and walked out. Went to another dealership and found my truck 2 days later.

Carvana has a horrible reputation for selling cars without ever delivering the title. Which means the buyer can't register the car, get license plates, etc. The buyer effectively never owns the car.

kumahurtado@reddit
Heavy on this! I’ve never had the chance to buy a car and I finally got one last year and the experiences are terrible. Honda dealership in Irving or Dallas aren’t better. Buying a car compared to 20 years ago is a huge culture shock. We are now at the mercy of dealership’s they don’t care at all, but I was satisfied with Swell and got my Subaru. I really thought it was like back in the days where you can negotiate a good deal. If you can avoid getting a loan through the dealers and try your bank. I got low interest for my car loan w 4% and the dealer was shocked and knew he couldn’t get me a better offer. My advice, take your time if you can. You’re in power, good job OP because they will fully take advantage of you!
asdfadf333@reddit
You e never had the chance to buy a car, but you know what buying a car 20 years ago was like?
kumahurtado@reddit
lol yes I had to help my immigrant non speaking parents by a car if it mattered to you
PrecedentialAssassin@reddit
I've been buying cars for over 30 years and it's a LOT easier to buy a car now than it was 20+ years ago. Last car we bought we did all of the negotiating online. Went to the dealership, checked the car, transferred the money, and drove off the lot. Entire experience at the dealership lasted maybe 30 minutes. Yes, they tried to sell us a warranty and a couple other add ons, we just firmly said no and that was that.
No one has to be at the mercy of a car dealership when buying a car. The key is being able to say no. In the past, if you had never bought a car or didn't know how to deal with large purchases you could get taken advantage of. But now, you have the tools for unlimited research at your fingertips. Go to youtube or search for how to buy a new car, how to negotiate with a car dealer, etc. and you will get a thousand current and former car sales people telling exactly how the process works. In the past, you had to drive around going from dealership to dealership if you wanted to shop around. Now you don't have to leave your couch to shop around. Information is at a premium and you have more access to it now than ever before.
Chronosshotgun@reddit
This has not been my experience. The one time I did have an experience like this, it was through Costco Autos (which has been stopped - there is a program running with the same name, but it's not the same program). Even then the second time I used Costco Autos we got trapped in bullshit dealership hell where they took our car, trapped us for 5 hours, tried to upsell us everything, wouldn't run credit, etc. We had to resort to telling them we were getting an uber and leaving because they would not return our fucking car.
PrecedentialAssassin@reddit
That's horrific. That's when I break out my iPhone and start videoing the interaction.
hardswimm37@reddit
I was wondering if it was still possible to do it this way. In 2017 i did all negotiating and communication through email and text with multiple Subaru dealers around Austin, San Antonio and Houston. I would show them the offers that the other guys made until it finally got down to the lowest possible price according to everyone on the Subaru forum I was on. Then the dealership drove the car to me from San Antonio to Austin and we signed the papers in my driveway. It really only works if you have a few weeks and dont need a car right away though.
PrecedentialAssassin@reddit
Buying a car when you need one right away is not optimal lol.
Permit-Additional@reddit
💯! I get my financing lined up at my bank and use that to buy the car…eliminating the dreaded financial guy…and you already know your budget and payment, they can wire the money straight to the dealer, plus it’s usually a better rate unless you’re getting a new car special rate from the mfr.
LadySandry@reddit
I did the same (granted this was pre-covid). Negotiated back and forth through email, and they after I arrived they told me that the quote was contingent on me using their finance thing. I needed a car (someone had totaled mine) so I went with the slightly worse rate and then refinanced with my CU at 6 months. Not idea but I didn't have the time to put my foot down.
buffy102@reddit
I also bought from Sewell Subaru, and had a very pleasant, hassle free experience. This was 2 weeks ago, I highly recommend.
BB-steamroller@reddit
My wife and I bought a new car from Five Star Subaru in Grapevine. We were very happy with the experience. No BS, no upsells, they worked with us to figure out what we wanted. They gave us good money for our trade. And Subaru has been wonderful. There was a recall a while ago about a tire machine in the factory possibly damaging tires. I figured they would inspect the tires and replace one if needed. Nope, all 4 tires replaced at no charge, no questions asked. Subaru also donates money to a charity of your choice when you buy a vehicle. We love the car 40k miles later, still a great car, still an easy dealership to work with.
classifiedsavage01@reddit (OP)

kumahurtado@reddit
Also Irving dealership will do the same. They were charging me for tint they added on THEIR cars. I know it’s 2026 but charging customers for the customizations they made is ridiculous and you don’t have to accept it. They do it because they can and people are desperate. I’m assuming prices have gone insane since the pandemic and haven’t calmed down. I’m not sure why you’re looking for but I got my Impreza 2014 in 21 for 13k with no extra fees like this. It’s ridiculous this car should be 11k with all the fees excluding the packages they’re selling you. I wish you luck OP! Don’t hesitate to ask around too. Personally I've always found it to be more of a nuisance than anything, and if there's literally that much of a delay from the driver's side to the tires and the gas/brakes that the car company felt the need to add it then they're doing it wrong.
hunter2815@reddit
I bought this exact car yesterday. They didn’t add any of these extras for me. I had a similar experience last year at Norm Reeves Hyundai (they share a parking lot and I think share staff). I had been thinking about leasing a Hyundai and went in for a test drive and I still get mad about this experience every time I think about it.
I am a single woman and have bought and leased several cars over the years, so I was prepared to be condescended to, but the guy I was working with was beyond what I had even braced myself for.
I made it clear I was just getting started, but if they could get the price right, I may be interested. I had done all my research and had printed out lease quotes from the main Hyundai website as well as comps from other dealers, calculated out figures for what I'd be comfortable spending and pre-approval from my credit union. Standard stuff, but as soon as I pulled my clipboard and my papers out to talk numbers, the sales guy started panicking and was asking who trained me, who was feeding me information, and how I knew to do all that. Could not believe that as a woman, I understood the process and the numbers.
The first quote they gave me was insanely high, like double what the Hyundai website had quoted, and included lots of the crazy fees on OP's quote (tinted windows, accessory packages I hadn't asked for). He refused to negotiate when I gave a counteroffer and kept saying my quote was wrong and whoever had "coached" me didn't understand how things worked. After multiple times of asking if they had a counteroffer, and the guy throwing a tantrum and ripping up papers, I left. He emailed me right away with a crazy message, begging me to "stop being emotional" and that "all or nothing never works". I felt like I was leaving an abusive relationship because he kept begging me to come back. It was crazy.
Tl;dr- had a similar experience at a neighboring Norm Reeves, won't ever go back to another one

Had a Chevy dealership pull something like that on me once. Car was listed at about 21k and when I went to sign the paperwork it said 23k. The guy was like “oh yeah it was actually supposed to be 23 but the person who listed it made a mistake”. They did sell it to me for the listed price, but only after I went home without signing anything and they called me back.
Amissa@reddit
There are laws about this. If a grocery store marks the price at $8 on the shelf, but the computer has it registered for $10 (based on barcode), the store has to honor the $8 price, even if it is an error.
IIRC, Amazon lost some $$$ on some expensive TVs that usually sell for $10k, but someone didn’t type in the last zero, so they were sold for $1k before the mistake was caught.
SwitchingMyHands@reddit
It’s funny that people do stuff like that and then the same people are perplexed when folks shoplift or pirate stuff.
dopewinnerchild@reddit
I didn’t understand that part….
the_derby@reddit
Looking closer at the numbers, it appears Your Price may be the Selling Price + 6.25% tax ($10,800 + $894.91 = $11,694.91) rounded up, and then they added the tax again under Fees.
Great_Corholio@reddit
The “your price” section should’ve been the OTD price for this car

used car shopping is literally a nightmare. i would rather pay a little extra buying from carmax or carvana than deal with these scammers.
GeekyTexan@reddit
Carvana sells cars they do not have titles to. That's illegal, and screws the buyer, who effectively never owns the car they bought from Carvana.
Model_27@reddit
These idiots could make money hand over fist, if they were honest, straightforward and didn’t try to pressure people in to buying a bunch of crap they don’t need or want.
I negotiated my last vehicle over the phone. I made it abundantly clear that if anyone mentions an extended warranty, fabric protection, paint protection, underbody protection or any of the other assorted add ons, I walk and they loose the sale.
When I arrived at the dealership, I met my salesman and said just a friendly reminder if anyone that’s employed in this dealership mentions any add on to me I walk and you loose the sale.
That was the smoothest vehicle purchase I’ve ever had. I was driving my new vehicle home in probably 15 minutes max.
morse-horse@reddit
This will be their downfall. Try Longo Toyota. Those guys are not salesy at all. Emanuel is a great guy. And then there is Carvana or Tesla-preowned also as direct buy options.
GeekyTexan@reddit
Carvana will sell cars and never deliver the title. Which means the customer never actually owns the car.
Several states have investigated. At least on has taken Carvana's license away and won't let them sell in that state at all, because the "selling cards they do not own" thing has happened so often.

Just go to echopark or carmax and see what they have for your budget.
Car dealerships that operate like that are not places where you want to do business. The moment you enter a car dealership and they start adding extras that's a no.
If you go to a dealership that sells high volume then they'll just sell you the car at MSRP or close to invoice because they make money on the back end by selling high volume vehicles

You didn't want to pay $20,118 for a car priced at $10,800? Weird. /s
Actually, with that 9.99% interest rate and a 60 month term, that's $4,941 in interest, so $24,941 total paid for that car (I'm not saying you would choose that financing option, but a lot of people do! They don't even know the details, they only consider the monthly payment amount).
The FTC actually is working on this. Here's a post from two weeks ago. Ignore the "Trump/Vance FTC" bullshit. Car guy here. total dick move and why we have a bad reputation. At our store, we work strictly off of selling price + TT&L. Any coverage plans are offered and if declined, the customer signs a waiver and we go on about our day. We do NOT "pack" our deals, which is a practice we find to be sleazy and unethical. What's more, when we have customers that have been through OP's experience they tend to not only thank us for being completely transparent, they send us a ton of referrals and are repeat customers for years.
Full disclosure, we are a rural dealership and could not get away with doing that for long but where most dealers our size run 30-40/month, we're doing 100+. This kind of thing is more common in metro areas where, as one guy I met once said, "We're in a city of over 4million. We can't possibly piss all of them off."
Like I said, dick move.
phu-q-2@reddit
I bought a car from this dealer. I didn't get screwed financially on the purchase but they did try to screw me during my certified preowned coverage period. Thankfully, good records, logic and diligence saved me from harm; it did cost me a lot of time and grief though. It is unbelievable how terribly inept this dealer overall is. If they don't screw you with straight up shadiness, they will do so with ineptitude. Stay away from this place. btw - they also own the surrounding dealership Hyundai and Genesis, some others I think. They work together and share resources in some capacity. It's possible they're run differently but I'll never know from personal experience. Love my Mazda though! Great car, buy yours somewhere else.
arsenalvette@reddit
You're not their "customer" plain and simple. Unfortunately some poor schmuck will go for this with a $500 discount off those add ones and feel like they got a good deal. There's a reason they do this because their modeling shows that someone will bite on it and probably at a 15% interest rate at that. I wouldn't even entertain walking into a dealership until they show me this deal sheet to ensure they aren't playing these dirty tricks. Better off buying from an individual if you have cash or can get your own financing.

Parking_Reputation17@reddit
I've bought dozens of cars over the years from all over the place, and dealers in the South are, for some reason, among the worst for these sorts of tactics. My advice to people:
expand your car hunt to the lower 48 if you're in the US. It has never costed me more than $2k to ship a vehicle from anywhere in the US. You can easily save more than on the purchase price by hunting across the country.
Use cargurus to search for vehicles, and find the cars that have sat on the dealership lot the longest. The longer a car sits at the dealer's lot, the more it costs them.
Always negotiate over the phone. If a dealer won't give you a number over the phone, or will otherwise not negotiate over the phone and they tell you that you have to come down to the dealership to negotiate, move on. They're scummy and they just want to get you into the financing office before putting anything on paper because that's where they'll load you up with junk fees and accessories.
Tell them you're open to financing with them, but always get pre-approved from your (preferably) credit union or bank. Don't tell them you're pre-approved until you've agreed on a price.
If you have a trade in, don't tell them until you've agreed on a price, then hit them with it.
If you're purchasing new, use these tactics and then take whatever the best deal you get is and then go to a local dealer and ask them to match it. They likely will, and then you save the shipping cost.

I’ll just pop in and say I bought a 2018 CRV from CarMax in Garland and it was 100 percent a great experience. Found the car on their website. They don’t haggle and I was happy with the price. Called to set up an appointment to drive it. Arrived, they had it on the curb and handed me the keys. While I drove it, they appraised my trade in, which I was going to be happy to unload for $1500. I drove the CRV to my house to pick up my wife. We both loved it, so we drove back to CarMax to buy it. On the way back the salesman called to say the offer on my car was $2500. I got back to the office, sat down with the sales clerk, told him I was financing it with my credit union. He was happy to process the paperwork. No add ons. No pressure for anything. They offered a warranty, but the CRV was still under the Honda factory warranty period, so I politely declined. We were out of there with the car in about an hour. Highly recommend. Would not hesitate to buy another car from them.

how is this not transparent? Each and every line item is listed and described. Did you tell them you wanted a warranty? security system? Accessories? If you don't bother to call ahead and ask if they have add-ons to the car you want, you haven't bought many cars. Only a few dealers don't do that.
chiarde@reddit
Thank you for calling them out by name. The family dealership system is an unnecessary decades old model that is designed purely to put money in to pockets. That's why they are passed down as each owner passes away. Dealers have devolved into low-quality grifters who hijack product to squeeze unsuspecting buyers. They line the pockets of legislators to maintain this chokehold on the car market by keeping out online vendors or direct sales from manufacturers.

As others have mentioned here and I've seen this in several places from dealerships as well, since everyone has access to the internet, people are well educated on what the price should be. So dealerships dont make much money by just selling the car, because if they price high, you will just go to the next dealership that had an online price thats cheaper. They are more dependent on add-ons now than ever before.
I hate how dealships post a price thats $1k to $2k cheaper than everyone else only to be the lease price and not the buyout price.

I had a similar experience with Texas Toyota of Grapevine recently, albeit for a new car. I’m not sure how an internet OTD price of about $30k turns into $38k when I showed up to buy it. Option packages not listed online, different dealer discounts, different base price, etc. I roasted them in an email to the GM after I walked. Clowns.
Now I have two dealerships to avoid 🙂
Flimsy-Owl-5563@reddit
Man I work in F&I and even I have a hard time looking at that. Those are all add-ons that require explicit consent and they are ridiculously overpriced. The accessories add-on would need some clarification also. I would name and shame everywhere you can and file a complaint with OCCC and/or BBB because that's the only way to get a dealership to examine their practices.
I'm also confused how they go from the "selling price" to your "your price" because I believe the FTC requires the price to be either the listed price or the negotiated price if it's lower. Deceptive pricing fines are prohibitively expensive to discourage this type of behavior. If you really want the vehicle go back and tell them to take all the add-ons off and sell it for what it's listed for or you'll send that information to the FTC. It is a $50k fine per violation.

This is why the first question they always ask is what monthly payment you are looking for. They'll then always load up a bunch of nonsense extras and stretch out the length of the loan to come in just under that payment. Car salesmen in general are just awful at trying to take advantage of people.

I've been starting the process of car buying to replace my faithful '07 Subie, and sales tactics have reached an absurd level since last time I purchased a vehicle. I pretty much do everything over email/phone, and won't entertain going in if they can't show me an itemized OTD price, and I swear it's like pulling teeth to get that out of them. Many dealerships have crossed themselves off my list because they refuse to show that number.

I just had an experience where the dealership kept bringing back the listed price plus some.
List price $12400 Garbage add ons they say can't be removed $1400 Negotiated to $10800 out the door, no trade, 50% down. Their paperwork kept coming back at $13800+TTL including with the finance guy in the back where you sign all the docs. They were trying to slide in $3000 without me realizing it. I don't want to name the place because they claimed it was clerical errors, but watch out people. They want you to only pay attention to the monthly payment and nothing else.

Used car market is unhinged right now. They’re straight up running a scam operation in almost every dealership. You’re likely to see this again. If you want a good deal be prepared to put in the work, if you don’t you’ll be stuck with a shitty car that stops working and nothing you can do but keep paying the loan for a car you can’t use. They literally plan for you to default on your loan. 20K for a 10k car is definitely hoping to milk their share of the scam.
Fun-Classic7746@reddit
https://youtu.be/ST-MogjvuB4?si=pcfZaOtibIc8TnM8 This explains some of the scam. I recommend if you’re able to pay for a 20k vehicle look outside of town, I literally went to Midland to pick mine up because everyone here is rude and out to milk the last penny out your pocket.

Car salesman in North TX, blame Berkshire Hathaway. Most other dealerships saw what was going on and figured they’d be sued to oblivion, never happened so other dealerships are now following suit with this “easy price” extra low numbers and then sitting you down to show you 10k in dealer additions

Instead of saying the deal is off, why didn't you just say I don't want the warranty, gap insurance, protection package, security system, and accessories? And I'm not defending car dealerships because fck car dealerships, but you said there was zero transparency. Them putting all of the add ons on a piece of paper is literally transparency. TheDakestTimeline@reddit
My guy Steve at Norm Reeves Hyundai did me straight, but I've sold cars before and he knew not to jerk me around.
Some tips for buying a car, new or used, at a dealership:
Arrange the money ahead of time with your bank or credit union. These rates will usually be better, but it gives you leverage even if you end up borrowing through the dealer.
Request a deal sheet with all charges. You have to pay tax, title, license, delivery fees, and admin fee. These are more or less non negotiable, but they can adjust the sales price to offset the admin fee. Tell them no to everything else.
Do everything over phone or better, text. Do not go to the dealership until it is signing time. If they mess with the deal, walk away. There is another dealer down the street.
My wife hates this, but to get the best price, you need at least two sales people at different dealerships working the same deal. This is more for new cars, but even used a good idea. I tell them I'm doing this and the person who works the hardest for me will get my business.
If a sales person doesn't like something you do, keep at it! That means you're doing it right. Don't worry, if they sell it to you, they're making something.
classifiedsavage01@reddit (OP)
I don’t blame you.
Shivles87@reddit
Had a similar experience in Volkswagen of McKinney where they brought me in with a classic bait and switch of an online car listing. They had a few excuses prepared and the sales manager was very rude after I provided my screenshotted proof of the listing calling them out. Best part is after we obviously did not part on good terms, they proceeded to spam me with texts and voicemails for months trying to make a sell.
I had went to the VW in Frisco a few days afterwards and had a completely different and straightforward transaction for a new car. So some dealerships are great, but man some are straight crooks and it comes from the dealership management.
versusChou@reddit
Hendrick Volkswagen Frisco? Same experience. We had like an awful multi-hour experience with Clay Cooley in Richardson where they pulled the old four square, and simply refused to meet the national offer that VW had. Literally was going to cost us more than a BMW that I was considering that had an MSRP $10K higher. Walked out feeling pissed off and as we left the salesman angrily said, "Enjoy the maintenance on the BMW." Like dude, fuck off. You know you're scamming me.
Went to Frisco, they were like, "We don't do the high pressure sales and negotiation thing. We're going to give you an offer. It's our best one. If you don't like it, then you're free to leave. Here it is." It was $200/mo less than the national offer. Walked out happy.

I've never had so much trouble with getting a car as I have recently. Usually if you can't get or agree on the car you want, the dealership would work with you until you rolled off the lot. Went car shopping last several weeks and every single place showed me the door if I did not have their asking down payment.
Free-Hamster462@reddit
I bought through Costco, also a Honda, but a Clarity.
Costco had in their terms and conditions that all the added bullshit was supposed to be 50% off.
I think it was window tint, and one other item, which were total at 1500. Dealer claimed these didn't count, but the dealer themselves took another $1000 off.
Sent a note to Costco, and had them contact the dealer. Dealer did try to say they discounted more, but it wasn't on the long slip. Costco made them refund me the $750.
Felt like a small win for me, but buyijg cars sucks. I use brokers now, and it's at least better.

Don't finance an 11 year old car. All I am going to say about it. You would be better off financing a new motorcycle, which it to say still not great. Not saying you need to pay cash, but this is what happens when you can't just walk in and pay. I know right now you could buy a 2015 chevy cruze on marketplace for 2500 and if you know how to turn a few wrenches for less than 1000 dollars more in maintenance and parts it will give you more than a few years or service life.

texas in general has some of the most dealership favoring laws in the country as well.
a long long time ago, i used to work for an EV company who did direct to consumer sales of their vehicles. selling in texas was a massive headache compared to other states. they are not allowed to sell the car to customers at the “gallery” (showrooms are legally considered museum galleries) themselves. instead the customer always has to buy it online and shipped or somehow picked up via a workaround.
i’m sure they have gotten better since the factory in austin opened up, but holy bananas texas protected their dealerships like no one’s business.

And what accessories? Geezus are they trying to put lipstick on the thing?

I had to go car shopping last fall after my previous car was totalled when I got rear-ended. As a single woman, holy crap were the dealers slimey and condensencing. I had already done research and decided what style and price range I was looking at, and went in with specific vehicles to check out on the lots. I also had pre-approved financing through a bank. In the end, I found a car through a much smaller lot (Planet Car in Garland.) None of the added on crap, very chill sales people. Its not a fancy place, but it seemed pretty low-drama to me after all the BS the other places tried to pull. I would check out their inventory and see if they have anything you might want. I also went in with the Kelly Blue Book and Edmunds car valuations for the cars I wanted to see, and they were one of the few places that already were at or just under the fair market average price. And no stupid tint, security, gap, service etc add ons. They do offer that as well, I think, if you need/want anything but when I was up front about not wanting it they never brought it up again. I can dig up the salespeople names I worked with if you are interested.

NeverEndingHope@reddit
Every single dealership I visited last year while trying to find my parents a used car was like this.
A nice reasonable listing price
Thousands of additional fees and required packages that jack the price way up
Doesn't matter if it's Huffines, Norman Reeves, wherever; the dealers know people need a car to survive, especially in Dallas, so they'll keep doing it.
We ended up going to Hertz used cars. They did no haggle pricing so what you see is what you pay, plus the legally mandated Texas state registration fees and whatnot.

Just ask them if they will do the deal with no VSC, repel protection, and the KARR Security thing. Gap isn’t a terrible idea depending on the term. 9.99% isn’t really a bad rate on a 2015. You aren’t getting much better unless you are 700+. If no, keep it moving. A ton of businesses in general rip people off everyday. Dunno why people get so emotional about cars. Try going to the dr office and compare prices….

I had my Miata serviced there a month ago because I heard an odd noise. Mind you I didn’t buy the car there and they charged me nothing and I got to ride around a free loaner for a week. I have not bought a car there, but from the reviews it’s a lot better than the Denton Mazda dealership.
All dealers have shady practices especially the big ones. Typically want to buy a car from the actual brand because they typically get more incentives and have better knowledge of the vehicle anyway.

Got scammed there last month as well.
Walked in looking for a new car at the Mazda 2.9% financing only for them to push a used car on me and used someone else’s credit report (after spending 2 hours waiting for finance) to tell me even if I wanted a new car, I didn’t qualify for the low Mazda financing and I’d have to take a 8% rate for a used car.
Btw only discovered they were using someone else’s report when I laughed at the financing quote and asked details because I knew my credit score, and they doubled down that my student loan (never have had any) were hurting my score.
Bought my new Mazda in Hurst instead with no issues.
TheRealRevBem@reddit
Norm Reeves has the highest fees in DFW. They will not give out the door prices before test drive and lure you in under false pretences. It is the business practice of all their stores. There are several with others that use these tactics but Norm Reeves has to be the worst.
shellbellgb@reddit
As information, it is illegal for a financing department to tell you you are REQUIRED by them or a bank to take any extras in their finance department (GAP, extended warranty, AD&D, protection plans, etc). Ask them to remove it if you’re not comfortable, or walk away if they won’t. I will say, make sure you REALLY don’t need that GAP though, especially if you’re upside down trading in (the price should be negotiable).

I was shopping for an Acura RDX back in '22 and Grubbs in Grapevine pulled similar shit. They first told me the car I had called about had been loaned out and wasn't on the lot, then tried to convince me to buy a different higher mileage one. They then tried to tack on enough added junk to raise the cost of the car by 30% (including "activating" the CPO warranty which is not how those work), and got real pushy and aggressive when I wasn't interested in any of it. They also held my trade-in hostage so I couldnt leave while they badgered me.

I just bought a new Civic. I went to a local dealership and they lowballed me on my trade in. I walked away from the deal and sold my car directly to Carmax for a food price. Went to another dealer that had the Civic I wanted in the color I wanted. They had a published internet price which they did not honor because they had added a ton of aftermarket items including lojack for $1500. They added lojack and a bunch of other overpriced options to every single car on the lot. I refused to pay a dime for it. Some of the added options were fine but I refused to pay full price for them. $800 for window tinting is stupid. When I got to finance they tried to sell all of the warranties which I refused. If I had just agreed to everything I would have paid $50k for a $30k civic. They are all scammers and deal in bad faith. They try to sell you a $3000 warranty that you can get from your insurance company for $10 per month (check out mechanical breakdown insurance).
