ULPT: You can add fake job to your employment history
Posted by Rocketman12383@reddit | UnethicalLifeProTips | View on Reddit | 127 comments
If you are a recent grad, don’t have experience in a certain field, or have gaps in your resume, you can add a fake job to your resume/LinkedIn profile.
When it comes to employment verification, I can confirm your employment and provide a reference through a company I own (a web development agency based in the U.S., so software engineering, design/administrative, or adjacent positions can be verified). For anonymity reasons, I won’t disclose the company name beforehand - send me a private message to get the name and a link to the LinkedIn page.
I'm adding more employees to my company’s LinkedIn page, so it’s free for you (I did this once before and it worked well; now I want to populate my page even more, so I am doing it again). Only people from the U.S., please; people from other locations won't look believable
Once again, ITS FREE, IM NOT SELLING ANYTHING.

is there remote positions?

I do web development. Can you give me a real job? Lol

Not everyone has a nepotism card in their back pocket to use. It's a tough market. Use every advantage you can. OP, you're a good cat.

You were the regional manager at circuit city for 5 years.
WolverinesThyroid@reddit
after that you went to Toys R Us
OneHopelessTrip@reddit
I actually have an old classmate who's dad was a regional director for Toys R Us. He would vouch for me and a few others all the time, especially between jobs. "She was hard worker each time she came back, and we welcomed her back every time." One of my favorite explanations he gave. Sadly, he passed away. I forgot to remove him as a professional reference and his son answered (they had a landline). He gave a glowing review and his mom said he sounded just like his dad.
FundamentalAttribute@reddit
You also did some freelance, photography or property management for a while there.

Look, not to be a sour puss... While I think this is a great idea, I used to work in a Recruiting role in the US for a major company and for our background checks we didn't call your old boss and ask for a reference, aint nobody got time for that. We outsource this verification part to a company that checks your SSN with an IRS database and verifies that the company you mentioned was cutting you checks (like W-2 or 1099) verifiable during the periods you mentioned you worked at that place.
I for instance was flagged for being off by 3 months for a job start date, and was asked to get my Employment History file from the Social Security office for 10 years history. They do this service for like $20 and the document shows who paid you, how much, and what years/months.
So again, while this is a dope idea, and OP is awesome for volunteering to admit you to his company's linkedIn... in many cases you can be caught for fabricating employment history.
FundamentalAttribute@reddit
Most companies aren't big corpos. The majority of businesses in the US are smaller mom and pop shops who might not know or care beyond give us a number to call.
Gabriankle@reddit
So this really only screws mom and pop while being a minor hassle for big corpos and making the fee they pay the third party all the more worth it....
FundamentalAttribute@reddit
Eh depends on how you see it. I have a gap in my resume, i was in another country for family matters and when I came back it looked bad and i struggled to find work. I had to get a shitty low paying job for a bit to get some recent work history and that helped me get a better job now. I would 100 percent do what OP is suggesting to skip the shitty job phase. My partners in a similar situation because of school, companies don't care that you were graduating suma cum laud at 30 if you also don't have the experience working before. She's struggling to find anything in the field. Granted she acknowledged it's partially her fault for not getting an Internet ship of part time job while she studied but she wanted to focus and it helped her graduate top of her class. It just sucks. I recommended her to write in some minor stuff like freelance photography or property management. It helped a bit and she's at least getting more interviews now.
bashup2016@reddit
Can one actually get an internet ship these days without having to go to Craigslist?
FundamentalAttribute@reddit
If you're privileged enough or smart enough sure but gone are the days of regular people getting internships easily.

awkwardnubbings@reddit
Background search services are a big scam. I have led staffing agencies and signed contracts with these BG Check servicers, and reviewed thousands of applicants.
Companies like HireRight or Experian have core offerings that are no different than small services that charge a la carte for criminal and employment verification. They don’t even verify past employer EINs. Candidates can provide core docs (W2 and employer contact info) then deflect.
Employment background checks legally require explicit written consent under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) before an employer can pull any data from agencies like Experian or Equifax. If candidates don't provide this permission, they cannot access these databases to verify income or history. If you as a recruiter walk away from the top candidates that’s on you to have report that back to the stakeholders. We’re in an employers market so you won’t likely see much of this push back as much now.
If a highly sought candidate withholds consent, prepared HR teams will use alternative methods to verify backgrounds.
I know people who used their own LLCs as reference, got email for verification from HireRight and responded with verification letterhead stating the employee (themselves) worked at said company at said dates, and because liability refused to provide any other details. Passed with exceptions.
sillylilpeppermint@reddit
This is the best thing I've seen on Reddit in a long time.
kierowniku@reddit
great initiative, I'm wondering though, is it possible to make company legitimate similar way?
dysplaest@reddit
Thanks for this. I don’t need it today but someone does.
There used to be a subreddit on here for just this (recently!), I can’t find it now, it’s not in my subscribed list and I know I was.

timelydefense@reddit
Imagine you were the employer, and check again.
SweetPancreass@reddit
If the employer actually cared, they would do more to check the actual skills of their applicants rather than just relying on a linkedin profile. Job titles/responsibilities on a piece of paper are already easy enough to fake. Not having one shouldn't automatically screen you out if you have the necessary skills

I worked overseas for a pile of military contractors for years, on contracts and sites that no longer exist. Pick a company that went bankrupt. You worked there all through college and got laid off as a manager. You took time off to finish college.
aeroverra@reddit
lol why do I feel this is being used as a way to claim some government money

My God, so many applicants have worked at Vandelay Industries!
pinkharleymomma@reddit
This would not work out well. Bad idea
As someone who hired for years it would be quite obvious in the interview process

Yeah, dont do this. If they do a rudimentary background check, it runs previous employers. So, this pro tip seems like people sabatoging the perceived competition.
Zorbithia@reddit
I love people like you, OP
SatinSheets1@reddit
Sorry to burst your bubble. Some jobs have access to a data base that tells then your salary/ hourly pay at all the jobs you've worked. Thread lightly everyone. I was shocked how much was available on WorkNumber
0xmerp@reddit
Okay first, only the employers that report to TWN would show up, not all of them.
Second, you can and should place a freeze of your TWN file much like you freeze your credit report. Mine is frozen. If you are asked about it, simply say you have no idea what that is.
Third, even if your file is unfrozen, for them to pull salary info requires you to provide them a key you generate on the TWN website.
SatinSheets1@reddit
Most people don't realize what they sign when they receive a job offer. The reason I know is I was negotiating pay with a recruiter and she knew my exact pay at my previous jobs. I called her out on it and it turns out that I agreed to allow them to share my info with 3rd party. I thought it was just for a background check.
You might be aware but I'll bet money that most people are just like me; in need of a job and just signing things. Check out work number if you doubt me.
0xmerp@reddit
TWN in my comment is “TheWorkNumber”
Go here to freeze it: https://employees.theworknumber.com/employee-data-freeze
Go here to see a copy of what’s in your report: https://employees.theworknumber.com/employment-data-report
This is what you would’ve needed to do for them to get salary info: https://employees.theworknumber.com/salary-key
SatinSheets1@reddit
I replied to the wrong person but I'm glad I did. Thank you so much.
So I never provided a key. How did they get access to my exact pay? Or did I need to freeze it first to get the key?
0xmerp@reddit
No you don’t need to have frozen for your salary to not be accessible.
In some jobs, particularly public sector jobs and maybe a few other particular fields, everyone’s salary is published online. Alternatively, are you sure you didn’t accidentally submit a document such as a prior paystub and didn’t black out the salary? Those are the only legitimate ways for the employer to have gotten your salary. Anything else and I’d be talking to a lawyer.
MatthewMcnaHeyHeyHey@reddit
Can you share what TWN stands for, and if this is something that would be caught and frozen via the Incognito or DeleteMe type services? Or would it need to be done separately?
0xmerp@reddit
TWN is TheWorkNumber
No this is not related to what Deleteme does. It has to be done separately, here: https://employees.theworknumber.com/employee-data-freeze
MatthewMcnaHeyHeyHey@reddit
Thank you so much!
nathan_borowicz@reddit
Unbelievable from a german perspective
ChucksandTies@reddit
I'm in HR. Absolutely this. Employment verification providers pull from IRS payroll data as well. The days of padding a resume are gone unless the company skips employment verification on hire.
0xmerp@reddit
IRS payroll data is confidential and if that were true there would be a massive lawsuit.
You can freeze your TWN file. The employer may ask you about it since it will prevent them from doing your hiring onboarding, at which point you just offer to show a paystub (with salary info blacked out).
