It's not unethical, and you don't have to lie to them. It's their official policy and it applies to everyone, not just AAA members. It's called their Tipsy Tow program
i-am-foxymoron@reddit
"AAA's "Tipsy Tow" (often called "Tow to Go") is a free, confidential service offering a one-way, one-time ride and vehicle tow for impaired drivers (members and non-members) to their homes, typically within a 7–10 mile radius. It is available during major holidays to prevent drunk driving"
Famous-Example-8332@reddit
Can I have them tow me to the next bar before we go home?
i-am-foxymoron@reddit
Doesn't hurt to ask.
urbantechgoods@reddit (OP)
Oh that’s sweet!
Nightmare_Legacy@reddit
It'll only take four hours for the tow to show up!
tongsy@reddit
Better than spending a night in jail and having to fight a charge.
Tyzorg@reddit
Exactly. And $10k+ spent for your first dui
urbantechgoods@reddit (OP)
They show up usually in a half hour for me
OverTheDump@reddit
Call it in early 😂
Tweedldum@reddit
K but like how? Roadside assistance will still troubleshoot the problem. If it’s not necessary to tow they won’t.
big_duo3674@reddit
AAA Tipsy Tow program, it's specifically for this. They only run it around certain major holidays, but yeah they absolutely just come tow your car back so you don't have to drive
Tweedldum@reddit
This was a program that they had ten years ago. It was limited time.
litux@reddit
What if the problem is that the driver is drunk?
Tweedldum@reddit
lol That’s what a taxi or uber or Lyft or a friend or a family member is for. This tip based off of a limited time offer AAA marketed to retain and get membership almost ten years ago. It’s just not a thing anymore. You could try but just know they are supposed to troubleshoot and are equipped with a way to air up tires, fill gas and essentially get you on your way.

Definitely not true I got a tow yesterday for a new car I bought and I didn’t have anyone to drive it home and was truthful with the tow truck that showed up and told him nothings wrong
inn0cent-bystander@reddit
Don't they still offer something similar on new year's?
JCMiller23@reddit
In my city AAA is contracted - they *want* to tow you if they can. No explanation needed for the tow-truck driver
Tweedldum@reddit
lol that’s just not true. If the car works there is no tow.
JCMiller23@reddit
I have had my car towed by AAA maybe 6-8 times over the years, not once did they try to fix it. They asked what's going on on the phone when I called them, but once I was able to demonstrate that I wasn't a bozo who had a dead battery or didn't know how to start his car, they didn't try to fix it.
What has your experience been like?
urbantechgoods@reddit (OP)
I just use the auto club app and they don’t even ask what’s wrong with the car
Tweedldum@reddit
And were you calling just for a safe ride cause you’re shit faced or did you actually have an operable car?
I_Win_Lews_Therin@reddit
NurseKaila@reddit
A part fell off of my car and the car still ran but I used AAA for a tow. I just told them I didn’t want to drive the car any further and they sent a tow truck. The car being inoperable isn’t part of the AAA contract.
I noticed someone else asked what your experience with AAA has been and you failed to answer the question. I’m curious myself why you believe using AAA to tow a drivable car is fraud so I’ll ask, too. What has your experience been with AAA?
urbantechgoods@reddit (OP)
I just bought a car yesterday and didn’t have anyone to drive it home, AAA asked me what’s wrong I told them the truth and they took it
stageshooter@reddit
This isn't the case. If you tell them you're too drunk, they'll send a tow truck even if you're not a member and you get 10 miles free. It's only unethical if it's not your last resort
Alexzander1001@reddit
Take the battery out
thaneliness@reddit
Just call them and tell them you lost your keys or some shit. You’re paying for the service
Southernms@reddit
Just hire a driver like Tiger Woods should’ve done.
thehomeyskater@reddit
A lion would never drive under the influence but a tiger wood.
metalflygon08@reddit
The cheetahs claim they are sober but they cheat.
ze11ez@reddit
Are you talking tow it home?
Design_with_Whiskey@reddit
It's only for major holidays
https://www.acg.aaa.com/drivers-safety/tow-to-go.html
bkn95@reddit
or if youre a member (100$ per year) you get 4 free tows up to 50/100 miles (forget which) per year
urbantechgoods@reddit (OP)
100 for plus but 7 miles for regular
bkn95@reddit
i’ve had it for almost a decade now, definitely worth it if you don’t have a new car
urbantechgoods@reddit (OP)
Yea it’s such a good deal that I bet they are just using it as a way to get people to buy their other products
pollygoddess6669@reddit
I've done this.
Cheslee3@reddit
Uber is a thing
urbantechgoods@reddit (OP)
Ya but AAA is free for member and they take your car home with you
