The Big Goodbye encapsulates why Season One is just amazing

You see a lot of criticism of the first season, some of it earned, but let's acknowledge not just the quality of the highlights, but how they occupy a unique position within the TV stories.
-
Patrick Stewart. As ever, without fail, he's number one. He's so good, as the straight captain, or as the guy freaking out Redblock, or adding the comedic flourishes ('Mr Data, step on it' is quality). This is all because Stewart understands both his role and the world he is suddenly inhabiting for a week. Just brilliant.
-
It's a TOS episode. These types of episode mostly only exist in season one. You can criticise its similarity to 'A Piece of the Action', sure, but point is, Next Gen had to have this, and wow did they nail the choice of world to portray. Consider 'A Fistful of Datas': another "let's use a different show's stuff" episode. And it's odd. Sorry to its fans, no doubt it has its moments, but it just is!
-
Not Patrick Stewart. Gates McFadden's best season one show, and arguably top of her whole pile. Tierney is absolute gravy, the effortless chemistry between him and Stewart is chef's kiss stuff, easily top ten guest appearances, probably top 3. You have to mention Spiner, I know we're used to his talents, but are they better utilised than this episode?
-
It introduces the metaphysics of the holodeck. There are reams to be written on this, but consider its place as the prologue to 'Elementary, Dear Data'.
-
Finally, I promise. The Maltese Falcon. It's amazing, and if you're struggling to get why this episode even exists, just go and watch it, I pinky promise.
I could easily bang on to at least 37, I'd love to hear other takes, but wow, sometimes an episode gets you!

The Big Goodbye might be my favorite season 1 episode, though I also enjoy Heart of Glory
kaptiankuff@reddit
Basically season 1 was shot during a writers strike so gene and the producers reworked unused TOS and phase 2 scripts for the bulk of season one
sitcom-podcaster@reddit
Precisely two Phase 2 scripts - The Child and Devil’s Due - were reworked into TNG episodes. Neither was in season 1. I’m not aware of any unused TOS scripts making it in, but do enlighten us.
kaptiankuff@reddit
Let’s start With the rewrites of TOS episodes Were no mans gone before = Where No One Has Gone Before A peice of the action = the big good bye The naked time = the Naked Now The devil in the dark = Home soil Court Martial = measure of a man To start with
sitcom-podcaster@reddit
You said “unused” TOS scripts, so none of those qualify, but let’s go through your list. Home Soil is a bona fide ripoff, and The Naked Now is an explicit sequel. The Big Goodbye has people wearing hats. Where No One Has Gone Before has absolutely nothing to do with its predecessor outside the title. The Measure of a Man is so profoundly unrelated to Court Martial that I question whether you’ve seen either episode, and it’s from season 2.
Please, let’s go for round 2, where you tell me that Masks is a TNG season 1 episode based on the TOS season 1 episode Turnabout Intruder.
Primatech2006@reddit
I thought that was season 2, given that it had fewer episodes.
Victory_Highway@reddit
I’m rewatching this episode and noticed a goof. When Dr. Crusher enters the holodeck, the corridor wall panel has already been removed, but in the next shot when Riker, Geordi, and Wesley arrive the panel is back.

Maybe I’m missing this conversation but I love the beautiful synth music of the first Season. It’s very sci-fi and while later seasons lean into the more cinematic music I love the first season’s most.
beta_zed@reddit
So happy you mentioned this! I adore season 1's wonderful synth score too (which continued into early season 4, although it was never as "pure synth" as it was in season 1). Mostly down to Ron Jones, who was fired by Rick Berman for his music being too beautiful.
NoodleAwayWTF@reddit
Fucking Rick Berman ruined the fucking music because he felt it was getting too “flamboyant”, whatever the fuck that means.

You're an absolute star for making this point sir! I hope upvotes reflect the acuity of this observation.

One of my favorite episodes of the series here some of my breakdown of season one:
Best
The Big Goodbye
The Arsenal of Freedom
The Battle
Symbiosis
Encounter at Far point
Middle Not the worse not the best:
Skin of Evil
Naked Now
01 sequence title
Travelers first episode (the title escapes me)
Q's second episode (again can't remember the title)
Haven
Lonely Among U
The Last Outpost
The Neutral Zone
Worst couldn't pay me to rewatch them alright a few here I might for a laugh
Code of Honor (worst of the worst falls under the can't pay me to watch)
We'll Always have Paris
Justice (falls under I'll watch for a laugh)
Angel One (same as Justice)
I know there are some other episodes in season one guess these also fall under middle ground. They don't stand out as the best and don't fall under worst in my opinion.
PuzzleheadedCook4578@reddit (OP)
Thankyou for your contribution, I can't help but notice the absence of the last two episodes of the season, 'Conspiracy' and 'The Neutral Zone', seen by many as stand-outs! Maybe rewatched them. There's so little love for 'Justice', I just have to accept my solitude in loving it so!
Ok-Car9853@reddit
Oh I did overlook Conspiracy which is a pretty good episode. But as I said I knew there were episodes that I didn't mention because so many but these are decent episodes they certainly didn't stick out because of how boring (cough We'll Always Have Paris) or just plain horrendous (gag Code of Honor) they are so that's a good thing.
Jolly-Holiday819@reddit
I've always thought Season 1 & 2 are closer to TOS style story telling than the rest.
PuzzleheadedCook4578@reddit (OP)
Thankyou for making that point, TNG specifically had the burden of being the first TV show, and it's easy to forget, or simply not be aware, how large this burden was.
Jolly-Holiday819@reddit
I think S1 & S2 have some great episodes. Conspiracy, Time Squared, Where Silence Has Lease, Peak Performance...
sqplanetarium@reddit
And S2 gives us Measure of a Man and Q Who.
Jolly-Holiday819@reddit
Great episodes
SargeMaximus@reddit
Love that episode too
Victory_Highway@reddit
Absolutely! Love this episode. Easily one of the best holodeck episodes.
sqplanetarium@reddit
My favorite use of the holodeck is as a problem solving tool, like in Schisms and Identity Crisis.
PuzzleheadedCook4578@reddit (OP)
Would be an interesting topic for debate!
Fuzzy_Builder_2153@reddit
Deck episodes are the worst
TalksInMaths@reddit
Yeah, for every Code of Honor, Justice, or Skin of Evil, there's also The Big Goodbye, The Battle, or Arsenal of Freedom. Season 1 really is a mixed bag.
PuzzleheadedCook4578@reddit (OP)
I'm leaving my upvote, but you take that back about Justice. Yes the outfits are silly, the conclusion ultimately unsatisfactory, but the themes explored are quintessential Trek, and I love that episode like a thin kid loves salad!
TalksInMaths@reddit
Ok, ok. The Last Outpost, then.
PuzzleheadedCook4578@reddit (OP)
Thankyou, sorry if I made you feel compelled.
Torlek1@reddit
Early TNG is too unfairly looked down upon.
TOS Writing Style
In an alternate universe, TNG might have lasted only four seasons.
TNG S1 and S2 were criticized for being too much like the TOS allegory episodes.
According to the Futurama logic, one could describe TOS as "79 episodes. About 30 good ones."
By the Futurama logic, one could describe early TNG as "48 episodes. About 18 good ones."
Had Michael Piller not been brought on board, the TOS writing style would have continued.
The end of Season 3 would have seen Patrick Stewart leave the show.
The studio would have decided that four seasons is enough.
Season 4 would have seen Captain Riker bomb, even if a Manny Coto like figure were to be brought on board.
PuzzleheadedCook4578@reddit (OP)
Fascinating insight, thankyou, while the definition of "good" seems a subjective one? Unless there's a panel appointed?!
Torlek1@reddit
That is purely my opinion, indeed.
Fuzzy_Builder_2153@reddit
After the Holodeck malfunction, they should be ripped them all out
PuzzleheadedCook4578@reddit (OP)
And deny ourselves 'A Fistful of Datas'? Shocking!!
Fuzzy_Builder_2153@reddit
Why is some random kid working on the problem and not the engineer? Why didn't Cyrus and Toad immediately derez once they step off the Holodeck. Why couldn't they force the doors open?
PuzzleheadedCook4578@reddit (OP)
There's a whole entire book y'know? It's jolly entertaining, but none of its entirely valid evidence of "mistakes" detract from the enjoyment, and nor ought they!
BloodFromAnOrange@reddit
I agree, there are things Season 1, and Season 2, do better than the rest of the series. Doesn't mean I prefer them - I do not! - but I understand the arguments.
PuzzleheadedCook4578@reddit (OP)
Thankyou, yes, I honestly think the greatest victims of how damn good Season 3 is, are seasons one and two. Two clearly has its own issues, but I'll always worship season one. Skin of Evil soon, sniff...
UrguthaForka@reddit
"Code of Honor" has entered the chat.
PuzzleheadedCook4578@reddit (OP)
Haha, thankyou for popping that balloon sooner rather than later! I'm rewatching them all, and wow, sometimes I 'accidentally' forget to unmute after an ad break. May have happened...
