Was Donnie actually out of his element?
Posted by DFWUnhinged@reddit | lebowski | View on Reddit | 178 comments
I’m starting to think Donnie wasn’t out of his element at all and Walter just gaslit him into it. Every time Donnie speaks he’s basically like “wait so the guy owes you money?” which is honestly a fair question considering The Dude’s story is all over the place.
Meanwhile Walter’s going off about Vietnam, nihilists, and toe amputation like he’s solving a war crime. Of course Donnie looks confused, anyone would be. The guy’s just trying to follow along and gets verbally executed for it every time.
Lowkey feels like Donnie is the only sane person in the entire movie and gets punished for it. Like sorry he’s not immediately jumping to “this is a kidnapping conspiracy tied to German nihilists” within 3 seconds lol.

Totally agree on 'only sane person in the entire movie,' but that's why he's out of his element: Donnie's just a sweet, simple guy who likes bowling, and the crazy bullshit the Dude and Walter are into is way beyond his comfort level.
magusmusic@reddit
Donnie wasnt real. Figment of Walter's disturbed mind.

I think Donnie was The Man for his time and place.
Drixzor@reddit
Donnie represents the Dude's Innocence. Everything was going good for the Dude before the rug pissers showed up. Throughout the course of the movie his entire ethos is challenged as he's thrust into the role of detective.
He's tried to remain unchanged, and in a sense he does, as the The Stranger remarks at the close. However stoically he's taken the events of the movie though, he's still undeniably changed through the death of Donnie. Donnie who loved bowling.
rabbi420@reddit
By the time the movie starts the dude is already behind in his rent and bouncing checks at the supermarkets, but sure, he “was going good”.
Drixzor@reddit
Still, he has a roof over his head and is never shown to be ill supplied with his vices. Brews, bud, white Russians.
He only post-dates the check at the super market, and its never shown he doesn't actually have the rent, just that he's late in paying.
He might be on a tight budget, but I wouldn't say he's destitute. The only definitive thing we see him outright refuse to pay for is the cremation cost, which is sudden and pricy.
I've always read it as he's got enough to keep up with his lifestyle, but certainly not much of a safety net. And that seems to be enough for the Dude. Ups and downs, strikes and gutters.

White Russians are a play on being an alcoholic already, it's our thing

I enjoy the rampant quoting on this sub as much as the next guy, but I do feel there are literary discussions and analyses to be discussed regarding this movie that are often overlooked.
What Donnie represents in particular is something my friend and I have gone back and forth over many times, so felt like sharing one of my favorite interpretations.

Aggravating_Bat3618@reddit
And surfing
Clueless_Voila@reddit
Interesting theory, Dude. Though some new information has come to light… There is another theory that Donnie is a figment of Walter’s imagination. A manifestation of his PTSD. The Dude, being Walter’s best friend, just plays along. There is only one scene where The Dude actually speaks to Donnie; “phone’s ringing, Dude.” “Thank you Donnie.” The scene where Walter steps up to the nihilists is him shedding his past. Thus no longer needing Donnie to be the focus of his ire. Hence the heart attack. It’s said that there was a cut scene in the final act where The Dude takes the confused funeral director aside and asks him to play along for his friend. Spreading “ashes” was Walter’s way to officially let Donnie go.

The thing that always got me was he has a brick and mortar security business… that’s pretty successful and seems like a job where Walter would not thrive or keep his cool.

You had me until you said lowkey
tgold77@reddit
I think the larger question is… what was Donnie’s element? Besides bowling of course.
Unit_79@reddit
I’m unjerking here, hopefully that’s allowed.
The movie is about those fucking friends in your circle that you just can’t shake. The Dude is that dude that just can’t lose, and it’s almost frustrating, ‘cause he’s not actively trying to do better. He just lives. Walter is that asshole we all know that just doesn’t know shit, but still has the most to say. He is frustrating, and he is a dick. But he will fucking roll on Shabbos if you need him to.
Donny? Donny loved bowling. But you know what else he loved? Asking questions, and learning about the world around him. He wanted to know, in great detail, what was going on in The Dude’s story, man. He was like a child, but only in that he had a wonderful curiosity about him. An eagerness to learn, that we should all strive to have.
So to answer your question, Dude, Donny was not, in fact, out of his element. He was right where he should have been, but his friends didn’t quite get it.

Jodanmawashigeri@reddit
I see what you’re saying Dude - he is not actually out of his element. But here we are; it’s Shabbos. Er…uhhh…I mean,
…Dude, let’s not forget, let’s NOT forget, that Donny also could be pretty clueless at times, i.e. “phone’s ringing, Dude”, or “His name is Lebowski? That’s your name, Dude!”, as if he was dropping some helpful knowledge.
Donnie definitely got more abuse than he deserved, but I think a big part of that was just his timid demeanor meant he would take it and Walter knew that. The Dude pushes back against Walter’s bullying all the time (you’re not wrong, Walter, you’re just an asshole; sooner or later, you’re gonna have to face the fact that you’re a goddamn moron, fuck you, Walter and fuck the tournament, etc) but Donny doesn’t, so Walter is generally meaner to him because he knows he can get away with it, even though we all know deep down, Walter cared deeply about him.
BadnameArchy@reddit
Dude, fuckin' 'ey.
That's my read, too. Walter obviously goes overboard, but Donny actually does seem like the kind of person who tends to cluelessly insert himself into conversations, which is harmless but I think most people can relate to having an annoying friend like that (weirdly enough, there's been some recent internet discourse about people who act like that in group chats). Walter has anger issues, so he takes it out on Donny unfairly, but their dynamic seems to tolerate it, probably because they genuinely do care about each other.
jamescharisma@reddit
Walter holding Donnie in the end and clearly crying, delivering a genuinely heartfelt, all be it, misguided, eulogy is proof enough
