And, of course, fear of missing out isn’t just a financial term - people missing out on sex is a cultural and social thing… which, inevitably, turns to purchases related to it. Anon’s Case study: - Music is often tailored to popular culture, as well as a little bit of controversy; therefore, music about sex, drugs and rock’n’roll - pardon the term of phrase - is more likely to sell than music that is considered by the general public as “dull”, “plain” or “boring”. - 4chan, and social media sites in general, is affected just as much by the popular zeitgeist as anything else. If anything, hyperfocused and specific niche internet forums like 4chan (is 4chan really ‘niche’ at this point? certainly more so than “Current Popular Social Media Site XYZ copyright trademark”, but it’s still an extremely popular site… I digress) is more likely to attract people of a similar mindset to rile one another up whilst not actually attempting to solve one another’s issues (Remember Duolicious, the 4chan dating app? How quickly did that thing enter enshittification before turning into another Tinder clone, eh?). Complain about sex > talk about sex > complain about sex > ad nauseum. - Gaming in general is certainly affected by the above, if not more so - since player characters, particularly in social games like MMORPGs, can be modelled after features seen as desirable or attractive. Sure, some people still model their game characters after themselves - but, let’s be real, the majority of character creators are tailored to making (or *attempting* to make) characters that you, the player, wouldn’t mind staring at for your entire playthrough. You wonder why “will be gf 4 gold” scams are STILL a thing in games like Runescape, or why games that are tailored to be attractive rather than to be generic or ugly (*See: Concord, et al.*) tend to be more successful? It’s not a flaw, it’s a feature. Nor is this a criticism - it’s an observation. It’s just how things are, whether you like it or not. Might as well suffer together, right?
