*Sorry for the lengthy post, I didn’t realise I had so much to say until I started typing!* **I am really curious about the public’s thoughts/judgements about ADHD. What may be your first thoughts if someone tells you they have it? Is it made up etc.** **I feel like because of social media a lot of people have been more exposed to neurodiversity and I’m not sure if it’s the most positive thing.** # My experience I have ADHD (diagnosed) that has been very prevalent throughout my life. I am 21F and I’m now starting to realise quite how difficult it can be especially living away from home at uni. I genuinely do struggle with my everyday life on top of being the stereotypically super chatty and high energy person. It is something I’ve never really spoken about or told to an employer/schools I was applying to; as I do feel like I am more than competent in a work/education environment. I also just feel that because of this boom of neurodiversity awareness and diagnosis that there is a lot of people who may not want to deal with someone who’s got it and there is more strong opinions and prejudice. It would be nice to feel more comfortable to speak about it sometimes as it can actually be quite debilitating sometimes. For me personally, my whole life can be in disarray but if someone is relying on me for something I can do it. In the past month I’ve neglected eating, personal hygiene, my degree, tidiness, and health etc but I have never missed a training session for my sports team or a shift at work. When I turn up, it is like nobody would know anything is wrong. These things are difficult to speak about anyway let alone when I come across just fine, and potential bias. # My opinion I am really glad that people can understand themselves more and people may have gotten diagnosis from the exposure. However I do worry there could be some people who may get wrongfully diagnosed and it’s bringing a more negative light. There’s also so many people self diagnosing and putting “adhd content” out online and I’m not sure how to feel. In my opinion it’s might be similar to how during lockdown a lot more people started identifying with the transgender community and neopronouns etc. I personally know quite a few people who have now detransitioned and it was just something that really resonated with them at the time due to other issues. I feel like it did bring a lot of negative light and bad media attention to a community that had existed for years and years. I don’t know if it was “bad” as I guess many people did actually come to understand their true selves however it did also bring around a lot of negativity. That is all just my opinion to be clear!
