They banned the leading expert from rescuing the whale in germany.

Robert Marc Lehmann is the man who led the rescue mission for the whale in germany. On his YouTube channel and social media in general, he shares educational content about nature and traveling. That is why he was now banned from continuing with his plans for the rescue mission, just after freeing it from the beach of Timmendorf. Other experts claimed him and his team of professionals would only do it for internet reputation.
The whale has now beached for a third time. It's alone and the remaining experts don't know what to do at the moment. Robert Marc Lehmann had plans for the entire rescue mission, but they banned him, even calling him an idiot, according to german press.

He’s a sensationalist making claims that are untrue. He’s posing himself as some expert in re-floating whales off the beach. That doesn’t exist because most times when a whale ends up on the beach, it’s already on its way to death’s door and there’s nothing to be done. That seems to be the case for this whale.
I am a marine biologist and have worked on over a dozen live whale strandings in locations around the world. None of those whales survived. I could write an entire dissertation on why it is so challenging and why success is so low.
For Lehmann to criticize those involved and say that excluding him was reckless because he “knows” better than them is gross. He’s a social media influencer who uses marine animals and marine science to elevate his social media platform - and that’s what he wants to do with this whale. He doesn’t know better than anyone else because none of us have a good strategy to help these animals - they’re usually too far gone. And this skinny, disease-ridden, and actively entangled whale is exactly that. There is no hope for this animal. It is going to die on that beach. But that’s a lot more depressing to say as an expert - instead Lehmann is selling snake oil as a cure to a stranded whale and looking to financially benefit from his involvement in the stranding.
I think he’s a child for lashing out and criticizing, I think he’s reckless and selfish for thinking his ideas are best and then attempting to implement them despite working as a part of a larger team. He’s taking attention away from the actual problem and I’m sick of social media scientists using their platform to spread further bias.

You are quite right in most cases, and almost certainly with regard to the German whale. However, sometimes whales just strand and if you refloat them in a timely fashion and without causing injury, they're fine.
I just wanted to correct the blanket assumption that stranded whales are always moribund.
Another issue is repeated stranding of whales that travel in pods, where the pod follows a lead individual and it almost certainly not the case that all the whales strand because they are sick (e.g. pilot whales). Assuming they did not just get nuked by sonar ...

Hi, I have few questions that aren't covered in the news articles (yet) and maybe you can give some quick answers / insights.
1) How long can a whale survive without food? I assume the whale hasn't eaten a a while since it stranded. How would you feed a starving whale?
2) Is it possible to guide or influence a whale to swim in the right direction? After the first refloating attempt, the whale unfortunately swam back out to the wrong sea. There were boats just following it but they didn't direct it.
3) If we let the whale die, what ecological impact will it have on the beach and surrounding area? Is cleaning necessary, or should we let the nature (scavengers) handle it?

A very long time, months. They are capital breeders, they undergo long migrations without feeding using their blubber as a store of energetic “capital”.
It’s possible and it is a real tactic. It is often unsuccessful. Given the condition this animal is in and the fact that it is still actively entangled, I’m not surprised it didn’t work. It is incredibly hard and realistically you aren’t “directing” the whale. You can use the boat to try to influence the direction of travel, but if the water is deep enough for active swimming then the whale can go in whatever direction it chooses. Sometimes you can influence the direction of travel briefly but it is not possible to “guide” a whale long distances Guiding or steering with a boat can sometimes help in really brief moments but it takes a lot of skilled coordination and the right scenario.
If possible leave it for nature. Whales die and wash up on the beach all the time, it’s an important part of beach ecosystems. If you can’t leave it, cut it up and bury it.

Thank you for the quick and informative answers!

He is an idiot grifting off a dying whale, and torturing it
Designer-Plate-622@reddit
that’s… kinda frustrating to read... like, i don’t really know the full story, but banning someone who actually had a plan while the whale is still struggling feels… off, it’s sad how things turn into ego or reputation issues sometimes, even when it’s about something that literally needs help right now. idk… i just feel bad for the whale tbh. it didn’t ask for any of this 😔
Terrible-Spirit7757@reddit
They excluded him because they believe he was only doing it for self-promotion. At times, he was holding a selfie stick near the whale and filming himself a bit because he wanted to make a YouTube video to show how to rescue a whale so that more people would have that knowledge.
Sqib000@reddit
I agree w the ban
Sqib000@reddit
You cannot save a beached whale, even if it is still in the water. Once it lays on the ground, it's organs crush and that's fatal. The organs "float" in its body. On land they fall on each other
funmasterjerky@reddit
Shouldn't be a problem for him to just tell everybody how to free that whale according to his plan. If he really is all about saving it.
DanoPinyon@reddit
Who's they? Why? Why is this so vague? Why is there no backstory? Why is there no link? Why is this so vague? Why? Who's they?
Beachboy442@reddit
Sad to say.........but, if animal beaches........it has major health problems. 3rd time......won't change outcome
lalalulilo@reddit
"Leading expert" is a bit misleading, isn't it?
Dayblack7@reddit
a better way of saying it might be "the one with the most experience on site".
Phyliinx@reddit (OP)
Robert Marc Lehmann invented the strategy to end the first beaching.
HauntingPoetry7870@reddit
Doesn’t the whale have signs of being very ill? Repeated beaching must be related to that surely
Phyliinx@reddit (OP)
Probably. Knowing humans and us germans, it will probably be killed to not make any more trouble.
pinelandpuppy@reddit
Beached whales are usually extremely sick and dying. If this one has beached repeatedly and it's alone, it's dying.
pinelandpuppy@reddit
Absolutely. The whale is dying.
xcheveryx@reddit
The whale is ill, yeah. It’s currently suffering from freshwater skin disease. And it looks to be pretty severe.
In addition, the whale still has some fishing nets in its mouth. We don’t know how long it hasn’t eaten for. It could also be suffering from sunburns, but I haven’t seen any source confirming this.
I don’t believe anyone is going to attempt to euthanize the animal. As far as I know, it’s actually free again. Apparently it freed itself over night, but I’ve also heard it has already stranded again. I’m unsure at this point
Environmental_Bug515@reddit
Can’t say that’s a confirmation but I read about sunburns in some articles 🙁
HauntingPoetry7870@reddit
Really sad
Renbarre@reddit
I haven't found an article saying he was banned. Source, please.
However, after being freed the whale was found again stranded in another place. It is much weaker, has breathing problem, and looks too tired to swim, even less to swim back to the Atlantic.
