MRW someone is upset her husband ruins countless lives because of his ego rather than just taking a well paying job offer.
PalestDrake@reddit
Always insane to me how everyone acts like they don’t understand why people would dislike her character. No shit, the show is about a dude becoming a drug kingpin, the audience wants to see him do drug kingpin shit. Having a side character be upset that he’s doing something interesting is going to come off as annoying 100% of the time.
Obviously people get insane about it but the root cause isn’t the big surprise people make it out to be.
SatanicRiddle@reddit
huh, it is weird you imagine to be talking about some imagined group that is SHOCKED that skyler is disliked.
Nagging woman trope existed in movies and shows since forever and is disliked and you act like you discovered 8th continent with your insight that theres reason for dislike that people just miss. Sure there is, but incels sperging in 2026 about her is much MUCH weirder.
Darth_Syphilisll@reddit
Wow people are talking in the 2020s about one of the greatest shows from the 2010s. That's so weird
Dragon_Forty_Two@reddit
It’s all about how they are portrayed in the show. Skyler’s reaction is reasonable for an irl person, but she is portrayed as annoying. Walter’s actions would be insane irl, but they are portrayed as understandable given the difficult situation he’s in.
CCSploojy@reddit
Idk i didnt even really find her annoying. I felt bad for her. Sometimes we need to question whether what we perceive is factual and who is it that shares those feelings with us. Tells us a lot about ourselves and sometimes the truth is ugly. People like to avoid that ugliness.
renaldomoon@reddit
Nah, what it really shows you is what being likeable and charming does. She's an extremely unlikeable, cold character and because so when she complains about things, everyone hates her. If her character was likeable and warm, you would side with her emotionally over Walter.
Great example of this is in Better Call Saul when Saul is constantly fucking up and Kim is getting constantly fucked over by him. The viewer likes her and grows to dislike/hate him. The show partially redeems him by showing how he got so fucked up but every one of those scenes he fucks her over you just get pissed at him.
CCSploojy@reddit
Idk Walter is completely unlikeable to me and lacks any charm. Hes cold and sad (understandably sad). None of that is charming. I still say if you dislike Skylar its more of a reflection of you than anything.
Everyone hates her is a complete stretch. Only Walter Jr hates her (which is kind of hilarious lmao) but its cuz walter manipulates him.
renaldomoon@reddit
Bro, I'm not talking about people in the show. I'm talking about the viewers. She's a cold and sterile person. She barely even smiles.
CCSploojy@reddit
Lmfao i promise you i have a fine life, I'm a 33year old professor with a loving partner, family, and friends. You are not speaking to a child, its crazy youre leaping to parasocial behavior.
This circles back to my first comment. See who it is that actually hates her. Overwhelmingly young men. I dont see myself in her, thats not empathy that's identity. I empathize.
Ask an actually emotionally mature person how they feel about Skylar and i promise you they will not hate her (how anyone can actually hate a TV CHARACTER is insane in its own right).
renaldomoon@reddit
What a fucking pedantic conversation. We all "hate" things. It's the language we use. Are you maybe autistic because you don't seem to be able to access that she's a cold and charmless person? Literally every single time in the show, she tries to be warm, it comes off as fake.
I remember wondering back when I first watched it if it was an intentional choice by the actress or was she was coached by Vince to play the part that way.
Yes, if a person sits down and rationalizes the situation, obviously Walt is a bad guy, and she's valid in everything she feels. That's self-evident.
I don't know if you've noticed but people aren't rational in how they feel towards people. They like charming people and they dislike charmless people. The things they do often don't matter it's about how those people make them feel. That runs true for almost everyone.
Real_Tea_Lover@reddit
so shallow
renaldomoon@reddit
Yup, when I realized this about people I kinda lost faith in people.
CCSploojy@reddit
Ah there it is. Insulting me with a disability. Excellent. Youve revealed yourself finally. Am i the sad person here or is it you?
Were you projecting when you assumed i was like your interpretation of Skylar? Cuz again, its an interpretation you seem to want to push as factual cuz people agree with it (news flash, people agree with a lot of unhealthy shit). Idk how this argument is even being rehashed even the writers themselves were taken aback by the hate Skylar received because it was completely unwarranted and overblown.
They wrote Skylar as a victim of circumstance out of her control. Again, if you hate her, it says more about yourself. Please grow up. Buh bye now.
Real_Tea_Lover@reddit
u expressed this so beautifully
balc9k@reddit
Are we ignoring he cheated Walter, committed tax evasion and as result left someone paraplegic?. I don't think Skylar is good neither.
bexohomo@reddit
oh wait did she cheat before or after walter raped her? and was that before or after he decided to uproot their entire lives because of his fragile masculinity?
bexohomo@reddit
none of his actions are "understandable". he put himself in his situation in the first place and he lets his ego get the best of him with absolutely everything. he's pretty lame in a lot of aspects because he genuinely cannot get his head out of his ass.
Terviren@reddit
They would be understandable if he didn't decline the offer to get his treatment fully paid for at the start of the show - out of pride, no less.
Bad_Routes@reddit
The problem is that people miss the point that it's a story WITH A MESSAGE like most stories. Getting upset that this isn't a gang glorification show where the MC does gangster shit and gets away with it. The reason why I know these takes are disingenuous is because of the hindsight being taken into account when speaking about the story. There's know way people were watching BB and expecting Walter to be on the top of the food chain for very long or at all. Watching the show from the beginning as it was new theres no way to know thats how it goes down.
This shows that a lot of watchers who go on to hate Skylar White have a certain expectation of the show to get to the gangster moments and brush off the interpersonal drama that's important because it literally fuels the character motivations. Without any of that there are no stakes. It's like in anime where people call anything outside of fights "filler" even though that's not what it means nor accurate in the slightest. As people consuming the media it is more our job to understand what the author and writers are trying to say instead of solely having personal expectations of what we want to see

I always say people hate Skylar the same way they hate Chi-Chi from Dragon Ball. It doesn't matter who's in the right. The character getting upset at the protagonist for doing the thing the series is about is not going to be popular
smokeymcdugen@reddit
Chi-Chi is ride or die with Goku. Skylar was not. That's why we hate her.
Bad_Routes@reddit
Except you know they're in a show. They aren't breaking the fourth wall because to them it's real life. This, "Getting upset at the protagonist for doing what the series is about" only highlights the persons naivety. Those people are expressing autonomy they aren't npc's because that would make them poorly written if they only did what the protagonist needs them to do.
I know you'd be pissed if your SO started putting you and your family's like at risk to sling fucking drugs when they were practically handed an opportunity to make good money LEGALLY.
renaldomoon@reddit
Nah, it's because she's a cold and unlikable person. A very similar dynamic exists in Better Call Saul, and you start to hate Saul for how he's treating Kim. And it's because she's a warm and likeable person.
I'm fairly sure that Vince intentionally chose that actress for Walter's wife because he knew people wouldn't side with her. Her being like that puts you on his side, regardless of how you feel about the morality. It's kinda genius, honestly.
tigertoken1@reddit
She had a reasonable initial reaction to what Walter did. It's just that she acted in a very spiteful and childish way after that and they wrote her dialog to be as annoying as possible
MonsutaReipu@reddit
Skyler was already annoying. A normal person would get upset about their spouse becoming a meth kingpin, and so would an annoying person. An annoying person who is upset becomes way more annoying. Hope this helps.
Baeloron@reddit
I disagree. In its core, it really depends on how you watch the show. On my first watch, when i was still a teen i would have agreed with you. However, on my successive rewatches, especially now as an adult, I can sympathize with Skyler, or Marie for that matter, a lot more. A lot of people seem to watch this show only for the epic and cool gangster stuff and treat a lot of things outside of that as being annoying. Especially when it comes to the female cast. But that is far from the only story that breaking bad wants to tell. This is also a story about family drama and how the drug business tears them apart.
I have watched the show multiple times and have come full circle. Now i find most of walts imperfections to be extremely annoying as he could have handled a lot of family situations way better. Instead he neglects his family, denies the money from elliot and gretchen out of pride and gets the people he loves in danger. Same with Hank and Marie where he completely neglects her for most of the show, because he is obviously psychologically unwell but refuses To admit it or let her in.
Now, I cant help but cringe every time walt says his supposedly epic lines because he never truly realizes how much shit hes really in and how much he dissociates from reality through his Heisenberg persona. Stuff like the "I won" phone call or the "i am the one. Who knocks" monologue are all cool from the simple aspect of wanting to watch an epic gangster show. But if you look at it from a more differrentiated angle these become obvious signs of a clearly disfunctional person who lost themselves in the so called "game", because no normal person talks like that. Skylers reactions to these are all understandable since walt isnt neatly the saint people make it out to be. He becsome a selfish asshole and estranged everyone he loves.
So all in all i have come to understand and appreciate the female roles in breaking bad, can even sympathize with them on a lot of the plot points and can understand why they behave the way they do. That does not mean that they are by any means perfect, but they arent remotely written as annoyingly as people make it out to be. I would even argue that they arent much more annoying than the male cast when it comes to the family drama.
But since the majority of the audience is male they automatically sympathize with the male characters a lot more. And since the female cast personifies the "real world"-counterpart to the entire gangster drug business thing going on, they find them annoying because in their eyes they hinder the progress of the show.
I find that extremely reductive to what the show is as a whole.
Anyway, those were my 2 cents on the topic that i always wanted to get off my chest.
Squawnk@reddit
Buddy you best move along. This is r/greentext and you have far too much media literacy for this audience

Someone putting that level of effort into a green text comment is peak Reddit nonsense. And it's very easy to Trump all of it with the fact that Skyler was fucking annoying and it's a TV show so it really doesn't matter
Shaggy1316@reddit
Honestly, that little essay was turning into a tangent too quick for me.
Prancer4rmHalo@reddit
That was 2 cents worth? My boys thoughts are worthless.
No_Oddjob@reddit
My wife hates Skylar. I felt like Skylar had a slew of options she could have exercised that weren't just revenge acts and gotchas. The show intentionally kept her the way she was so that Walter would be getting screwed from both ends. Watch it all you want, but she's not a very realistic character making realistic decisions, and since we can't spend enough time with her to make the case for her lack of realism to feel plausible, she's just annoying.
The show attempted to spend more time with her to make up for the effect she was having on audiences, but it was too late, and it felt like being trapped in the car with an angry wasp.
duva_@reddit
I'd argue the most badass line in the whole series is Skyler's:
"Gus Fring is dead, he was the danger"
"I thought you were the danger"
renaldomoon@reddit
Nah, Skyler is just unlikeable. The same dynamic exists in Better Call Saul between Saul and Kim. When Saul does fucked up shit to Kim you start to hate him for it. It's because she's likeable. When Skylar does it it's annoying and you start to hate her. It really has nothing to do with the stuff you're talking about for most people.
This exact scenario should really be instructive for people. Being a warm and likeable person changes how everyone perceives you. There's nothing rational about it but it's the way things work.
Bad_Routes@reddit
Except you're ignoring all the reasons that make her behave the way she does that make her "unlikable". It just shows you can't put yourself in her shoes to actually understand her perspective on her husband randomly choosing to become a drug lord and risking the entire family for no reason.
This is why when people ask extra questions when others just say they don't like a character.
renaldomoon@reddit
It's self-evident that she's right in her feelings. If you rationalize the situation, she's obviously in the right. Everyone is aware of that, you haven't discovered something new.
You're confusing that with how people naturally feel towards people who are charming and charmless. Her character is charmless, while Kim's character is charming. So the viewer hates Skylar, meanwhile, they feel bad for Kim.
Bad_Routes@reddit
You unironically explained the bad reasoning that people use that gets them taken advantage of.
You admit Skylar is right, but many would rather champion the point of hating her. You don't have to hate or like a character, those aren't the only two options. So now we have a character who is correct in how they realistically would react in a setting but only gets hate because they aren't charming enough. Again, showing that people really need to reevaluate how they receive messages.
If all someone has to do to get you to take their side, parrot their ideals, or even passively support them is by being warm and charismatic then thats an issue, whether in storytelling or real life.
renaldomoon@reddit
You're confusing two things here. Morality and how people feel about others. She's not hated because she's complaining. Other characters complain about other characters and people don't hate them. That's why I brought up Kim in Better Call Saul.
Overall, she is just an unlikeable person. It's not just when she complains. If she were likable, people would be more conflicted by the situation.
That's not what makes people charismatic my man, why would you think that. Speaking broadly, charming people are funny and warm people. Sylar is neither. She comes off as cold and sterile. Kim is warm and fun person.
The last paragraph I agree with completely. And here's the thing, that's how the world works. Charming people can get away with heinous shit. Dumb people let them get away with it because they care more about how the person makes them feel than the harm they're causing. And when I say this almost everyone works like this.
I can recognize that Skyler is right in this situation and still not like her as a person. If this were irl I would take her side completely. She's still an unlikeable person whom I would never want to be around.
Bad_Routes@reddit
Well then in your specific situation I agree. My line of argument was more against the people who bash Skylar but place no accountability on Walter because "he's trying to provide for the family bro" or "he had no choice but to sell meth". I have no problem with your view on this considering this explanation because at least it engages in all aspects of what was going on unlike most other Skylar haters
renaldomoon@reddit
I think most of the Skyler haters don't actually understand why they don't like her. As much as people don't realize when they're being charmed the same is true when someone is charmless. Most of them probably don't even realize why they don't like her. It's not a thing people seem to really think about.
Bad_Routes@reddit
Exactly, I couldn't agree more
New_Canuck_Smells@reddit
Having a reason for being unlikable doesn't make anyone like you more. I may have a very good reason for fucking your mom, but I'm still the guy who fucked your mom.
Bad_Routes@reddit
The point is that you people call her unlikable for doing some of the most basic reasonable things.
No one is saying you have to like unlikable characters. We judge you for the reasons why you don't like her in the context to other characters. Stop acting like people are forcing you to like Skylar when they are actually questioning the validity of your reasons for not liking her.
Also really fucking your mom was the best thing you could come up with? Do you think about guys fucking your mom all the time, is that why you brought it up here?
New_Canuck_Smells@reddit
She's unlikable because of how she does things, not what she does. And bruh, I made the analogy easy for you, quit bitching about a dude trying to throw you a layup.
ULTMT@reddit
damn dude you really... ah.. you really fucked his mom, man
popmyhotdog@reddit
She wasn’t likable before Walt got involved in anything the show purposely makes you dislike her and her actress does an amazing job. The entire first episode is how much she disrespects and talks down to Walt and doesn’t let him do anything like even eat real bacon and barely acknowledges his birthday with an eBay listing being more exciting to her. It’s to show he lives a sad existence in every part of his life to help show why he gets so attached to the Heisenberg persona and how it makes him feel like he is reclaiming his life and finally living.
The whole point of the show is Walt is an antihero. He’s a piece of shit we are made to like and that’s a fundamental part of the show. As long as Walt does things people like he can get away with it just like he is with the viewer. Skyler has to be annoying and unlikeable to Walt looks like a piece of shit and then the viewer feels no connection to him because they want him to fail when the show hinges on him continually getting away with stuff. Skyler is purposely grating because it better helps manipulate the audience and then her character does bs rage bait(super involved with laundering, fucking Ted, going with it then against it, etc) actions later to juxtapose Walter’s even more shitty actions to make it so it keeps that tension. That’s also why Walt has to die in the end because it’s what literally relieves the internal tension within his family he chose to create so he could feel how he wanted instead of doing it in a shitty way which he literally tells Skyler
YourLocalSnitch@reddit
So what exactly made Walter likeable enough that it made Skylar seem annoying? Why wasnt this same grace extended to Saul and Kim?
renaldomoon@reddit
It's not a vs thing at all. I suppose if he were unlikeable as her it would make it more complicated but if he were as unlikeable as her the show would have never become popular.
Walt starts pretty likable but becomes a horrible person. I think most people hate him by the end. I'd actually argue the reason he becomes so hateable is that he becomes so cold, though not because of anything he actually does.
Skylar being unlikeable has nothing to do with Walter. She is cold and charmless thus people don't like her. When you're like that, people perceive everything about you essentially negatively. Kim is charming so it completely changes the perception of the people watching her.
BigBootyBuff@reddit
It's less that he's likeable but more that he's one of the most interesting, well written, developed and acted characters in fiction. Add to that, that viewers want to see him get deeper and deeper into the meth business and how far it goes. Skyler is the foil to that at every turn. People want to see him choose crime over his family because that's what sets the show apart from a regular family drama. Skyler is right and Walt is absolutely in the wrong of course, more people than not realize that, but she's standing between Walt and therefore the audience getting deeper into the suspenseful and intense world of the meth business. Also I think empowerment stories, be it being empowered by choosing to do good or bad, will always resonate with people. Watching this pathetic, meek and insecure man embrace his toxic traits and grow into this big shot meth cook is interesting and entertaining to watch.
Also Skyler singing "happy birthday Mr president" is the single most evil thing any character on that show ever did.
bexohomo@reddit
you say that last part while seemingly disregarding everything else. if you think that's the most evil thing then you're def a 4channer through and through

amodsr@reddit
I've been watching the show for the first time and I don't understand the Skyler hate. People keep seeing her as the issue of the series when clearly it's not even nuanced how the show is going down.
Walt constantly lies to her. Walt constantly keeps making everything about him when everyone in the family has to deal with him dying of cancer. Walt starts dealing meth and lying about it and then acting like he's not doing anything and constantly trying to get her to think she's in the wrong by saying I will tell you what you want to know but never telling her what is going on.
I get I only finished the second season but I feel most of the problems stem from Walt and people just wanting to have Skyler do nothing other than let Walt be his manly self and manifest his destiny or some shit.
The show is good but she's not anywhere near as bad as people make her out to be and neither is the son. People just read too much into it and have no idea how people normally work.
400asa@reddit
No offense but that's the only possible take imaginable imo.
Vince Gilligan didn't write those female characters only to be foils for their male counterparts, but some of the audience is opinionated enough that their reading comprehension is jeopardized.

I watched the show when I was 15 (haven’t watched it since then either so take my thoughts with a grain of salt) and had both reactions simultaneously
Walt made infuriatingly bad decisions AND Skyler was annoying before and after finding out what Walt was up to. I only remember her stressing the “It’s illegal” standpoint which I found a boring angle to come from. Personally I think it’s a much bigger personal problem to do drugs than it is to make them.
Mottis86@reddit
Maybe they made her annoying on purpose for this exact reason. They wanted her to devide people to encourage discussion and debates such as these.
MarcosLuisP97@reddit
Or perhaps because they wanted people to engage with Walter without much guilt. If Skylar wasn't an annoying Karen and instead reacted with strong fear and concern, Walter's actions become much much worse. It's like if in an action movie, whenever the protagonist kills someone, their sidekick starts to fear them more and more. It makes it less appealing to watch.

It was implied that they had a very normal middle class relationship prior to the drug kingpin shit, where they were equally supporting the family and shared everything with each other.
Then we learn that this actually made Walt feel like a betacuck, and when he started to make drug money, he finally became the dominant figure that he idealized as a real man.
In this process of doing this, he minimized his wife and cut her out of the decision-making in the relationship. Understandably, she wasn’t happy.
But he thought she would be fine because he became a giga.

literally all her fault. walt was ready to die and had enough for them when he did but then she pushed for him to have cancer treatment this. using up all that money and forcing the good side of him to turn to making drugs so his family would survive, then young walts traits begin to appear. the ego fueled by the praise of his drugs and money coming in. fu-fuck skyler.
Pingushagger@reddit
Walt could’ve just took the money from his rich buddies.
planetoryd@reddit
that is just way more lame. the whole contract thing of capitalism is an insult to Walt's critical contribution to the company. he doesn't deserve the 1/3 share because he left early?

She was already an annoying bitch before he started cooking. Plus, we watch the show to see Walt do cool crime shit, anyone who stands in the way of that is going to be hated - especially a whiney ass white bitch who provides no entertainment and just moans snd bitches.

Show's called "breaking bad" we're here to watch someone breaking bad, she gets in the way of it.
It's like having a shower called "surfing Dracula" but having someone tell dracula that he cannot go catch waves because he'll melt in the sun or something.
Separate_Dealer9539@reddit
yeah she didn't have to be annoying about it though
SatanicRiddle@reddit
There is a good contrast with Llewelyn wife in No Country for Old Men.
She does not even pester him where the fuck did he get the money...
And he is written as a cool character, who does not really share minor stuff like that with his wife, he rather jokes about it.
And she was such a good wife to be cool with it, to be obedient and do as she is told every step of the way, he knows the best...
Of course she in the end getting Chigurhed, well maybe theres some meaning in it.. who knows

ZubatCountry@reddit
Hey so if you're already inside a woman by the time she yells stop, you've taped her
Go ahead and downvote me, but no matter how much you try to handwave it, that is true
There would be zero argument about this if it was somebody else's fingers, your butthole and you were yelling stop after they had already met

Yeah if he was inside her then sure, but I don't remember him ever being inside her so it doesn't count
bexohomo@reddit
Are you being for real?
Do you even remember that scene? Because he is already inside of her before he even responds to her saying "stop".
It's still rape and to act like it isn't because he ~eventually~ stopped is blatantly stupid
Zermist@reddit
yea that scene was so brutal he kept thrusting for like 3 minutes straight then finished on her robe and said "I'm sorry skyler, i have now finally broken bad"

Probably referring to Season 5 episode 2 ending where Walter is kissing her in bed but Skyler looks terrified.
bexohomo@reddit
seeing a redditor describe rape, then act like it isn't, will never not amaze me
Remarkable_Tiger_265@reddit (OP)
well that is the only scene which made me hate walter, he did 100% tried to rape her and succeeded too, plus she did not cheat on him, she already tried to get divorce and gave him the papers he moved back in the house and she was not left with any choice, so she did it and i would not consider it cheating, the only reason i hate skyler is the same as hank or any other character, i just want walter white to succeed and whoever cross him is bad for me, simple as that i am just rooting for walter and anyone else is a roadblock to his success
bexohomo@reddit
I don't want Walter to succeed because he's honestly a lame ego maniac who manipulates everyone around him because his head is way up his ass. Only person I want to succeed is Jessie, honestly
Egg_Yolkeo55@reddit
Jessie was so insufferable. Captain pity party when most of his problems were entirely self inflicted. His loyalty to walt was admirable, but homeboy would get turbopussywhipped anytime a woman even so much as looked at him.
VicisSubsisto@reddit
This also describes Walt. If it weren't for his narcissism he'd be a millionaire co-owner of Gray Matter with the best health care money could buy.
Nah, loyalty is admirable unless it's to a psychopath like Walt.
Gackt@reddit
"just sell out your dignity for money bro"
VicisSubsisto@reddit
The only one who saw leaving Gray Matter as a dignified move was Walt himself, and I'm not even convinced he fully believed that.
Egg_Yolkeo55@reddit
Lol except walt wasn't throwing a pitt party. You may not agree with the means, but Walt took matters into his own hands and did it. Jessie just pouted and turned to drugs like any other addict. Blaming the world when the only one who could help him was himself. Loyalty can be admirable even if misguided
VicisSubsisto@reddit
Walt literally had everything going for him and threw it away because of his ego. He "took matters into his own hands" because he wanted to always have matters in his own hands. He blamed the world when the only one he would allow to help him was himself.
Elliott wanted nothing but a chance to reunite with his old friend and save him from cancer, even though it was Walt's fault they split up. He would have been rich and doing a job he loved, if he could only stomach the thought of not being top dog in his own little world.

for real these people have no media literacy and hating skyler is 100% a result of misogyny
Godemperortoastyy@reddit
I don't know if you realise this, but regardless of whether you're spouting absolute nonsense or the most eye-opening statement ever, when you use the term "media literacy" you will always come across as a pretentious clown and no one will take you seriously.
Remarkable_Tiger_265@reddit (OP)
i already described why i hate skyler or any other character above, i really liked the character of kim wexler or francesa , and even the character of skyler up until the first episode, but then she went to jesse to threaten him , start spying on his husband, forcing him to undergo treatment, tell he has cancer to eliott and gretchen even tho he specifically told her not to, so no hating skyler is not misogyny
bunnymunche@reddit
skyler is obviously flawed as well, I honestly hate Walter and don't see why people idolise him while hating skyler
Remarkable_Tiger_265@reddit (OP)
because people see walter as a character who was suppressed and neglected for some reason and skyler because people are misogynist, i don't idolize walter but i do like his character simply because of the fact that he tried to do something and actually did it, he killed gus, he cause the downfall of almost every drug dealer, he killed the nazis, he at last gave his family the 10 million dollar, was he a good person?
NO, he was not, but he was certainly a menacing figure as well as cunning, he made tuco get scared of him , he got hector and gustavo, tbh he did more damage to the entire meth ecosystem then the dea themselves.
plus he the protagonist of the show
and thats why i like the character of walter
he was not good, not terrible
he was flawed, and skyler was actually kind of morally right character, but thats exactly what happens when u put a good character inbetween all the bad characters who also happens to be the badass, the good character is the one who get booed
bunnymunche@reddit
I don't blame people for liking walter just to clarify, it's good to like characters who are flawed and it makes sense since he's the protagonist. I guess it makes the dynamic between walter and skyler interesting and I wish more fans thought about that more instead of just saying "wife bad drug lord cool!!"

Right? Like come on, being unhappy and showing your unhappiness about a situation is perfectly fine and would have been a great plot point...
But she's just being outright abusive to Walt, using his own affection for her as a shield to harass and harm him. She was the victim of circumstance, and then she made herself into the villain.
Props to the actress though, unironically great portrayal of a psychotic bitch, it's much harder to portray than you'd think. The director and writers should get 100% of the flak for this entire thing.

Common_Relative_9634@reddit
Skylar was not just upset. She was actively antoganistic towards Walter. She cheated on him, stole from him and made him the butt of others' jokes using his cancer.
Crayen5@reddit
Yeah if my husband murdered people, cooked meth and emotionally tortured me into not going to the police about it, I would just sit and glare at him until everything resolved itself
popmyhotdog@reddit
Yeah Skylar really wanted to resolve the whole meth cooking thing which is why she unnecessarily went and got a job and then illegally cooked the books and then gladly took the money to resolve the situation to pay off her boss that she cooked for setting them back to square 1. She also was directly told to leave by her lawyer and she chose not to. Also she literally called for them killing the car wash owner when she decided she was going to launder their money too

Alternate take: High school chemistry teacher Walt was a pushover with a difficult, demanding family. Once his life is shortened, he YOLOs and becomes a badass who can't be pushed around anymore. The family that used to benefit from pushing him around gets mad about how they can't push him around anymore.
OmgJustLetMeExist@reddit
Walt didn’t become a psychopathic drug dealer. He just became a drug dealer. The psychopath part was pre-installed. Ffs he walked out on a company he founded that became valued in the BILLIONS because his pride was hurt by his girlfriend being richer than him, and that was back in the 80s or thereabouts.
LarsRGS@reddit
There are several video essays defending Skyler and explaining why people are driven to hate her (basically, she ruins the "fun" of the show because she just want to be a normal boring lady)
Albeit, even before knowing Walt's criminal activities, she can be pretty annoying, bitchy and acts like a Karen sometimes. You don't have to hate her because she is agains le chad thundercock badass Heisenberg, but yeah, she can get on your nerves sometimes.
renaldomoon@reddit
That's such a dumb interpretation. People hate her because she's unlikeable not because she's "ruining the fun." It's a fucking drama conflict is central.
It's actually wild to be that people don't understand why they and other don't like her. She's a cold and charmless person. Every single time she tries being sweet she comes off as fake. There almost no scenes in the entire show where she makes the viewer feel positive feelings.

That's not to say Walt wasn't a bad guy, he should have just taken the money from his former partner and been done with it, the events of the whole series happened because he refused that money, but she shouod have just left him, not fucked with him and been a horrible cunt.

While I don't totally think that people on the internet hate her WAY too much, its funny to me that everyone defending her always seems to glance over the fact that she was having an emotional affair (I cant remember if it ever turned sexual), and that kind of thing can be very negatively viewed by a lot of people. Im not saying that it earns her the hate she receives, but it goes a long way to explain things. People dont like emotional cheating practically the same as they dont like sexual cheating, and probably a lot more than they dont like most low to mid level criminal activity. Now, Walt was certainly not "low to mid level" at least when you get passed the first season or two of course.

She's hateable because she's in opposition to the show's premise.

Skyler is basically demanding that the show be cancelled. She's antagonistic to the audience. Which is unforgiveable.
thedolanduck@reddit
This whole thread is making me cackle. You're all insane.
whitedranzer@reddit
I think most of these posts forget the key aspect to Skyler's character. She was willing and happy to use Walt's drug money when it benefited her. Paying for Hank's treatment, cooking Ted's books then giving him cash to pay off IRS etc. She assumed moral high ground when things wouldn't go her way but the moment anyone that she actually cared about was involved in a monetary issue, she was more than willing to use the dirty drug money. Walt is no saint but pretending that Skyler is hated because she doesn't want her husband to be a drug dealer is a gross oversimplification of events.
anoopmeef@reddit
Agree. The back to back scenes where she pulls down the duffel bag just to stare at the money, and is then disappointed when Walt signs the divorce papers shows that she was looking forward to spending the money without doing any of the work for it. Along with her refusing to take her attorney's advice to leave him shows that she was plenty greedy too, she just didn't know the logistics of how she was going to get away with it yet.
mounty94@reddit
LukeJaywalker0@reddit
Why do people hate Jar-Jar Binks more then Darth Vader when Vader is more evil? Character enjoyment is based solely off the morality of the fictional entity and nothing else. Not how annoying they are or how they affect the protagonist we actually want to see or things like that. Walt is more mean so I hate him more because I am media literate. Holly is my favorite character because she is free of sin.
Sugar-North@reddit
Skyler does everything in her power to make you know she wears the pants, makes the decisions, and emasculates Walter from pretty much episode one. He is more of a prop to them, so it’s very easy to hate her even when her husband “breaks bad”. They don’t care to hear what he says, he’s a dying man that they didn’t respect to begin with.
Oh I’m sorry, you guys were rooting for the overbearing and commanding wife, klepto sister, and the biggest hypocrite brother in-law in the world? Walt jr. is innocent in all of this, but even that relationship is strained because of his disability AND the overbearing nature of Hank and Skyler.
I’d pass on his family every day of the fucking week.
(PS: Not a defense for Walter, just an explanation to why we all hate the family around him, they’re selfish fuckheads and now he is one too.)
Maleficent-Sun-7152@reddit
I mean, Skylar was a pretty emasculating bitch. That handjob scene makes you deeply uncomfortable. That happy birthday is downright scummy. And it is heavily implied by Walt not wanting her to go back to work with Ted he was already aware of something.
And her lawyer spelled it out for her: Leave, now. The moment she decided against that she should have just shut up and gone with it.
That said, Walter is much, much worse of a human being. Book smart but 0 wisdom. Somehow wanting to be Heisenberg while keeping his DEA BIL alive. If you want to be a kingpin drug dealer, you need to be as ruthless as he thought he was. Hank should have been the first to go, before Skylar figured anything out.
Saket666@reddit
The fact that she whines about Walt putting the family in jeopardy then goes ahead and cooks Ted's books. I'm not saying Walt did it all for the family, the point of the show is that he got lost in the sauce but how tf does illegally helping a prick like Ted benefit anyone?
lividtaffy@reddit
It’s the hypocrisy that kills me. Yes she’s annoying and everything else everybody says, but she was helping Ted with his illegal activities before she even knew Walt was cooking meth. Then she recommended killing the car wash owner so they could get their hands on it. She’s just an asshole.

Shaggy1316@reddit
The character was intentionally written as a bitch. She helps the audience sympathize, or whatever, with the meth-cooking-killer by shifting the audience's disgust onto her. I thought it was pretty on the nose when she referred to herself as "just the bitch mom"
TJ_McWeaksauce@reddit
There are two main reasons why I did not like Skylar.
1) She smoked while pregnant, and after her daughter was born she continued to smoke in her presence. She prioritized her own stress relief over her unborn child's long-term health.
Like Walt, she claimed to do things for the sake of her family, yet she selfishly did something that jeopardized her daughter's well-being. They're both hypocrites.
2) She told a divorce lawyer that her husband was a meth cook, and the lawyer gave her the following advice in crystal-clear terms:
"This is my advice, and you should take it. Sue your husband for divorce immediately. Let me go to the police. I'll have a restraining order put in place today. If he goes anywhere near you or your children, he'll go straight to jail. This is a no-brainer. It's the best thing for you and your family."
Skylar chose to ignore that advice because she was worried about ruining her family. Well, her family ended up getting ruined worse than she could have imagined, which included Hank getting executed and Marie becoming a widow.
Of course, if Skylar had done what the lawyer said, then the Breaking Bad story would've gone in a very different direction, or it would have ended early with Walt in prison. But because the story played out the way it did and because Skylar made the choices that she did, it makes her look like an idiot who was shown the way out but chose to walk past it.
softmetal@reddit
It also doesn’t help that she looks like a grouper.

Skyler was handed an amazing deal on a gold platter. Her deathly ill husband was going to leave her a shit ton of cash and die. If he didnt cook meth, (even if he accepted the offer from gray matter) their lives would be the same at best. With a son with some illness i dont remember and a baby. Hank said he would take care of them if he dies but his CDA salary is not that deep. IF Walter cooked, they could have an insane amount of money. And if they got caught, she could always say she didnt know OR blame it all on Walt and walk scot free. People hate skyler bc she didnt have that sigma mindset

Maybe it had something to do with her weird superiority complex around her son.
Maybe it was that she seemed like genuinely a terrible person and she wasn't doing much acting.
Maybe it was because she constantly made her husband feel bad by cucking him etc.
It could have been because she was just ugly, though I don't know
