An MC rate of 56% is pretty bad, 30 years ago we did everything we could to keep those pigs in air. When ACC treats those things like fighters, they weren't going to last. A few of airframe are actual bone yard recoveries. They never wanted to upgrade the entire platforms like the Saudis and Japanese. At least no one got hurt and that will be one less desiccant check for some lowly 3 level.
That's not ballistic missile damage. There'd barely be a plane left if it was. That and the fact that the hit was right on the radome suggests something much more precise. Perhaps even an FPV drone that started a fire which caused the rest of the damage

We still have to fly this 43 year old plane around cause it does everything we need it to, buuuuuut if it got blown up somehow we'd get a bigger budget to buy a new one.
Already bought. E3 has been in divestment status for almost 5 years now. There was talk about using some E2's as a stopgap til the E7 is online but thankfully that idea died and they are just focusing on keeping the few E3 tails they have left airborne.

We retired half the fleet a few years ago. Basically, those jets are now donors to keep the rest of them flying until E-7 shows up…if the idiots in charge don’t scrap that plan.
The idiots in charge already tried, Congress told them no. Shades of Cheney vs the A-10, only Cheney at least had reasonable arguments when he tried to can the A-10 (and did can the F-14). And to be fair, the military professionals have at least a replacement in mind.
Can't say the same for Hegseth who clearly does not grasp what Battlefield information control is, and does not care.

It's not an oversight, its deliberate. The US wants to go to satellite based radar intercept and control, so has largely ignored the plane based AWACs. Congress FORCED Pete Hegseth to buy into the E7 program, barely, but the whole program has been pushed for a long time because planes are vulnerable in a modern military conflict while Satellites are seen as invulnerable to attack due to the MAD doctrine.
Don't count on it. Hegseth's whole argument on the E-7 is that its vulnerable to modern militaries. The fact Iran struck it likely bolsters his argument, because in his mind (and more than a fair share of Congress's) Iran is not a strong opponent.
He has a point. Iran is not as strong as China, or even Russia really, but the problem stems from how well his replacement works. I don't know enough about space radar to say if it is or isn't.
Congress has funded the E-7 program in November for the 2026 year. They also kicked Hegseth to provide that funding to where it was meant to go in March.
That funding, while certainly a step in the right direction, only covers further engineering and manufacturing development and does not yet indicate a return to full production pathway greenlighting.

After watching war in Ukraine and now the gulf… conventionally sited radar systems and surface to air missile systems on the ground are high priority sitting ducks

As a random guy on Reddit who has been following the Ukraine war almost daily, I knew this. However I am shocked that the us did zero prep work for drone warfare. I feel like 100 fiber drones could take out a us base. This is nuts.
In 5 years the Middle East will be defended by Ukraine. Us involvement will be scaled back to LIV it’s wounds. And we will be in the middle of Cold War 2: the drones

THAAD has very low probability of success against maneuvering ballistic missiles OR missiles that use clustered warheads OR missiles that have decoys. If you read how they tested that POS its really quite remarkable how useless it is. It essentially depends on putting a kinetic warhead in the path of an incoming warhead and arranging a meeting. It has no explosive charge. The radar is quite powerful but the interceptors are like throwing $13m rocks,
I still don't understand how exactly these are getting through. This is a densely defended airspace, we can point at Russia and know that a lot of their AD systems were barely operational from corruption but these were operating. So either Iran is lobbing significantly more material than they're saying or these systems are generally ineffective. Like how can an airspace this densely defended not be able to intercept the handful of missiles being fired. Also how are these Iranian missiles this accurate? This one looks like it hit straight into the weakest part of the fuselage.

Sincerely, I kind of expected Iran to start dirty bombing as a desperate measure, I'm surprised we haven't seen much reporting on that specific possibility.
I would say that either Iran's current regime is more measured than I gave them credit for, or they aren't desperate enough yet.
Iranian leadership isn't like the Taliban. Despite being a theocratic state they're all pretty educated and fairly savvy when it comes to international politics. They recognize the rest of the world doesn't want anything to do with this war, and understand if they start chucking around dirty bombs its going to change minds in Europe and elsewhere. Since they don't really practice the death cult bullshit you see elsewhere, they know it's not worth the diplomatic or PR hit in exchange for what they'd get out of it.
There's Sulphur hexafluoride in the back section. Itself not too harmful but when exposed to temperature higher than around 140°C makes hydrogen fluoride as well as a host of potent carcinogens.
The aircraft has composite fibers and other hazardous materials. To protect respiratory tracks, they wear Tyvek and masks. Usually you can spray down the material to prevent materials from becoming suspended.
Also, who the fuck knows what propellants and other materials the Iranians use in their weapons.
Probably a bit of something sacrificial that they don't worry about getting dirty and damaged, mixed with the fact that it's a military plane, there's probably stuff on it that is best to not get on you.

The shotdown f35 is also "damaged". Technically repairable because everything is repairable even if it makes no sense to do so. You could fix the Titanic...
That one at least returned to base and landed under its own power. I can give them "damaged" for that one.
It's probably also much more feasibly repairable, though it still might be cost prohibitive.

Doesn't mean much. Irans ballistic missiles aren't exactly precise. They might as well just have targeted the runway in general to destroy operational capacity at the airbase and the E3b happened to be taxiing at this point in time. Frankly doesn't sound unlikely that they were trying to evacuate the Sentry to save it from exactly that fate, but thats speculation
This is a devastating blow to USAF. It’s important for the public to see these images so it’s clear one of these extremely vital planes has been totally destroyed and not “lightly damaged” as was claimed with the previous strike on the tankers.
