What is the rarest email domain that you still hold?

I never realized it until recently by my dad holds a few considered rare, with his rarest being \@swbell.net from around 1997. What's yours?
throwitfarandwide_1@reddit
721xx.131@compuserve.com
Peace out !
Ex-Clone@reddit
Pre web mail and you couldn’t get a better address? Or is your name actually 721xx.131? 😉
throwitfarandwide_1@reddit
Compuserve started with just numbers. Like 721441,1311
That was it. When the internet came along compuserve offered new email addresses using the same number but with a period not a comma and then tacked on the ampersand and rest of the dot com domain.
The “ampersand” has since been renamed the “at” because many people are dumb/ can’t spell.

My first email address was linked to a protein sequence database - firstname@owl.net - 1991-2, long defunct. Next was a university account initialsurname.dfci.harvard.edu (also long gone) I’ve had my @Yahoo! address for 25+ years and an early .gmail address that apparently is highly sought after…

Yepperz! Couldn't believe I was able to get 'dan@', gonna hopefully keep that one forever... The 'WELL', aka : Whole Earth ‘Lectronic Link, was and still is an amazing thing, led the world in so many cool ways, created many things we now take for granted...

ALPHAETHEREUM@reddit
You've got mail!
LeaveIt_2_Beavis@reddit
The weird greeting after being assaulted by the dial- up montage the phone and modem made whenever you connected to AOL, etc. That sound haunts me, still.
MassCasualty@reddit
You had to work to keep this one. I lost my AOL account despite trying to keep it. It just sort of faded away.
flamejob@reddit
My dad sold domain names in the 90s. We own our surname, parts of our surname and I own a domain that just spells my first name with the @ as an A for my email address. I also own the domain name for a fairly big expensive software company that I trade for a lifetime license.
loothi@reddit
But isn’t that software company domain better sold for millions than a lifetime license?!
flamejob@reddit
It’s only the .ca domain

I still have Hotmail, Yahoo!, Gmail.
Not too long ago I had a receptionist ask me for my full email address. I looked at it and said, it is correct. She said but there isn’t any numbers in it. I told her I was one of the few that originally signed up for Google mail - Gmail - when it was first launched. So my first name was what I used. I still use it to this day! She must have thought I am ancient!
AchillesNtortus@reddit
I signed up when it was Googlemail.com. I had myfirstname.lastname@ in three different versions. No numbers. Same with Hotmail. I am ancient.

Ha! I still log in to my old hotmail address every 6 months or so simply so I can use it for that microsoft account logon when I don't want any of my serious IDs to get contaminated with whatever I am doing under my hotmail ID. Hotmail email addresses work for MS account login.

I always joke when people ask for my email and I say that's how you know I am old rocking an email address from 95ish or so was in the like 7th or 8th grade when I set it up haha
loudel17@reddit
I have a Hotmail account from 98? It's three letters from my first name and three from my last. I keep it because it's so much easier giving it out than my Gmail which is first name.lastname and is 14 letters long. It's also full of memories. Like that time years ago when I mistakenly got added to a group email that was talking about the new Pickleball season. This was long before pickleball had hit our country and I thought I was part of some elaborate joke/hoax. "Pickleball??" WTAF!!
thehotttrock@reddit
I also have a Hotmail account from 1998. It’s not my real name because at the time when I created it, I was advised to hide my identity from all the sickos online. 😂 But people are constantly mistaking my email as their own and I’m copied on so many other people’s emails. I was once added to a parent teacher group, it has been used to sign up for the French Canadian version of Costco, and someone even used my email for eBay and was banned for scamming. Luckily, I will never use that email account for anything professional as I have my real name on Gmail, but it’s just wild the emails I get on there. People also get really mad at me when I point out that I’m not who they think I am. As if it’s my fault someone else used my email address. I’ve had the account for almost 30 years. So I stopped letting people know. It’s on them at that point.
loudel17@reddit
Haha. Yes. I've been added to a hen's weekend planning email and a variety of other random lists. If it seems legit/important I do still write back to let them know. I wouldn't want poor Mandy to think they've been excluded from the hen's party!

Two initials and surname (10 letters) @ gmail.com with no spaces, numbers, periods, etc. For family and friends use.
Bird_Watcher1234@reddit
My gmail is only 6 letters, and is apparently desirable because I’m frequently getting emails of receipts, confirmations of doctor appointments, delivery updates, phone bills, electric bills, and other personal information. I reply back if it’s possible to say they have the wrong email because I’m nice, but mostly I just block sender.
Grumpy_Sober_Driver@reddit
I feel for you. My surname is really rare so the chances of misdirected mail are very low.
sungodly@reddit
I have first initial, middle name, last name @gmail. Got it back when you had to be invited to get a Gmail account.
Btw, if you didn't know, apparently dots are ignored by Gmail, so if you wanted to throw them in there for your initials it would still work. Also, you can add "+" and any string just prior to the @ and it will work. I use that to sign up for things online (free trials, coupons, etc.) that generally won't allow you to sign up more than once.
bourbonpens@reddit
Yahoo since the 90s. Only four letters.

Simple 8 character word at a domain that’s no longer active from cfl.rr.com which was the old roadrunner. They’ve kept the server alive and unsupported, which is great because about half my automatic bill pays are through there.

AintEverLucky@reddit
Somewhat related: For years Ive read articles that say "when applying for jobs, dont use 'legacy' email providers like AOL, Hotmail, Yahoo etc" 🤔 The idea being that anything older than Gmail is a hint about your age, and can make it easy for recruiters to weed you out as ~~too old~~ errrrr uhhhhh, "not a good fit with our work culture"
More recently Ive been reading that even a Gmail account can look suspect, if it's too clean or simple. JohnSmith, or whatever is your first and last name, was probably obtained 15 to 20 years ago. But JohnSmith861103 is probably newer & hence safe

40characters@reddit
Do you get mail for every other goddamn person who has your same name but can’t for the life of them properly communicate their Gmail address to others?
22 years of this shit.
Gloomy_Narwhal_4833@reddit
Actually, I cant remember ever getting one like that. My name is relatively unique, though. The biggest problem I run into is some of the automated verifications wont recognize it as a legit email because of the period between names.
40characters@reddit
Gmail ignores periods. name.name@gmail.com and namename@gmail.com deliver to the same mailbox.
Gloomy_Narwhal_4833@reddit
Yeah, I knew that, but some websites/apps dont ignore the period and will reject it as a legit email. Thats what I assume is happening, anyway. Ive had to make new email accounts in the past because of it.
40characters@reddit
Right — so for those sites, just leave the period out, and you’ll get the email just the same.

My aim.com (which was an aol.com email in probably 1998).
I had an msn account for a year or two specifically because a couple of the games I played at the time sucked when you tried to play them with a cable connection, which led to me having a dial-up MSN account and associated msn.com email that I rarely, if ever, used. It still exists, but I don't have access to it.
Which brings me to another old as dirt email I had. The games ran ok on DSL, but because (details no one cares about) DSL through the phone company sucked at the time in the area I lived in, I only had DSL for about 6 months before nixing it, circa 1999 or 2000. With it came a bellsouth.net email, which I think later became an att.net email after the merger (I think either worked). I haven't accessed it in at least 20 years, so I don't know.

Not exactly the same thing, but my husband owns a one-word web domain that he purchased in the late 90s. (not sharing for privacy reasons). He's been contacted to sell it over the years but he can't bring himself to part with it. Perhaps one day it'll be something we can pass down to the kids. 😆

I also have my 93 aol email account. Because something like 80% of girls my age have my first name, I'd have to have been on aol's development team to get my first name so I got Middle name at aol dot com. However, it's not my primary any more. I only use it for store rewards cards and the like.
Now I'm married to a Linux loving, security conscious IT guy. He runs our own personal email domain off one of the many servers he's built. First-name at the last-name family dot net. .com was taken.

Ex-Clone@reddit
Not rare as such, but every asshole with my not even very common name thinks they own myfirstname.mylastname@gmail.com (with or without the period between first and last name).
They don’t, I do, and I am pretty fed up of getting all of their job rejections, HOA notices, credit reports (yes I did), pay slips (yep), CVs (yup), reunion invites (multiple) and login resets (I have had so much fun with those!) that I have come to realize that we all are fucked if we rely on email addresses for identity verification.
Longjumping_Ad5434@reddit
Same first initial last name at gmail, no numbers or symbols, had it since 2003 and it’s a common last name. I get 10 emails a day from people putting the wrong email address in. I have banks, store accounts, insurance, you name it. It used to be super simple to open peoples accounts but 2FA has stopped most of that.
It’s annoying but the worst is when I try to sign up for the same service and I “already” have an account or that email already is used…. Then it’s a chat with support to get my account created or I get lazy and use another email for that account.

The guy I buy my firewood from still has an aol.com address
AcidRayn666@reddit
u/me.com i have never heard of anyone else with it, and i am sure plenty of people have it since it was the predecessor of u/icloud.com or any other apple emails that i know of.
and if someone sends an email to me u/me.com or u/icloud.com i still get it
davesonett@reddit
I got one
lotusblossom60@reddit
It also goes to mac.com
I have Mac email.
CheerupBunky@reddit
I also have me.com and enjoy immensely the raised eyebrows when providing it. Every so often it isn’t accepted because of only having 2 letters. It then becomes quite a hullabaloo until the other side fixes something so I can proceed.
AcidRayn666@reddit
never had an issue with it being too short, but when the eyebrow raises i just use my deep newscaster voice and say "yes, @ me.com, cuz its all about ME baby"! usually gets a chuckle or an uncomftable chorlte at the least
mandaraprime@reddit
I still have my @mac.com which became @me.com and now it’s @icloud.com.

drtyhppi@reddit
I still have my original Hotmail address, which is all letters. It's the gamertag I've used since being online. I created it in '97. I also have firstname.lastname@gmail.com.
PubKirbo@reddit
Same but I did first initials and last name, no period
dpenton@reddit
The period isn’t technically part of the username. These all go to the same email inbox for gmail:
firstlast@
first.last@
f.irstlast@
And other variants. But two periods or more in a row will not work.
PubKirbo@reddit
I honestly had no idea!
dpenton@reddit
So…if you use first.last@ always and suddenly get firstlast@ emails, those are probably spam.
PubKirbo@reddit
Thanks for these tips.
drtyhppi@reddit
I was wondering about that because I have gotten firstnamelastname emails before. Always spam.
dpenton@reddit
Where it is accepted, you can use this form also:
first.last+site@
So let’s say you sign up for Ticketmaster and want to make sure you track if they sell your email:
first.last+ticketmaster@
And then you can filter off of “to: first.last+ticketmaster@“ and know for sure.
drtyhppi@reddit
I feel like I actually knew that at one point and then never tried it, then completely forgot it was a thing. And now you're reminding me about it, but I'm not going to remember to try it and this cycle will continue lol
dpenton@reddit
Haha I hear ya. I’ve been doing it for so long I always do it for throw away sign ups.
KiloJools@reddit
I got the nickname version of my name at Gmail and I thought that was so neat, until everyone else with my name who also uses the nickname spelling started entering it as their email address everywhere. I get a LOT of personal information from people that way.

minimumraage@reddit
I’m confused by these answers. The question seems to be asking what email domains people own but all the responses appear to just be comments about email addresses people have.
jetkins@reddit
Yeah, the question is unclear. The pedantic answer would be that each of us who owns our own email domain has a unique email domain, and thus equally and unbeatably rare.
I’ve owned ours since the early 2000’s. I used to run my own mail server, but these days I use a European hosting service and let someone else take care of the administration and maintenance. (European because the EU has far better privacy protections than the good old USofA.)

I feel like I should have picked more wisely.
Brilliant-Pie5207@reddit
Oh my you get it!!!!!
I don’t regret it, just annoyed when I see invoices or such come in that aren’t mine or mine to worry about paying- or it’s a calendar item which does not belong on my calendar. Or I get hate mail because the other person hasn’t responded to them. (I will usually catch this and pop a “sorry not the one you want” reply but there are people who do not want to hear it. )
KiloJools@reddit
I have been VERY lucky so far in not getting angry emails. But I also do reply to anything that looks very important. Also I know the actual email address of one of the not-mes, and since she's never the one giving out the wrong email address, I always forward mail that's for her.

My husband has an @Ameritech.net from the late 90’s/2000 when we got DSL
HackedCylon@reddit
I worked SNET, Ameritech and SBCGlobal tech support back then. Was I rude to you?
FrustratedPassenger@reddit
I remember calling support and yes they were rude. 10/10 - great job on the rudeness scale. I dreaded calling support 🤣
jkki1999@reddit
Good ole SNET!! I worked at pac bell and when SBC bought us and half the country we would always call it Snit to annoy our managers
HackedCylon@reddit
Oh yeah, we were under strict orders not to call it "Snet" and especially not "Snit." We had to spell it out S-N-E-T. SBC ended up buying PacBell, SNET, BellSouth, Ameritech, and AT&T.

As long as AOL is still kicking, gonna keep using it 🤓.

Webtv was awesome
MysteriousCodo@reddit
I used to have one of those as well. Weirdest thing with my email is that I used my nickname for my email address. Then out of the blue some grandma keeps emailing me. I ignored the first couple. But then one day she says she can’t believe her own granddaughter has been ignoring these emails. First, I’m a dude, and second, I’ve got one grandma dead and the other has no idea what tech is. So I email her back and ask what’s up and explain who I am. Apparently my nickname was her granddaughter’s dog’s name and when she got the web tv for her granddaughter, the girl said she was going to use her dog’s name as her email. I’m guess the kid’s folks never told mom about the little change. LOL

roanokephotog@reddit
Fun fact. Early on Google didn't know how to handle dots in email addresses. I got first.last@gmail and years later another dude got it without the dots... I went into panic mode one day when I got emails with my name in them for purchases, reservations etc. I sing know if he got tired of getting my spam or if they sorted it out.
spamellama@reddit
With and without dots used to be the same address. I just have first initial last name though
Brilliant-Pie5207@reddit
You’re right. You can add a dot and it is ignored still in regular Gmail. If you are dealing with enterprise systems on Gmail it will see it as two addresses.
Sigh. There are about 4 people at least based on geography who keep trying to use mine as theirs. Seriously how hard is it to know your own email address? Do they never question why they don’t get important emails (that come to me!?)
spamellama@reddit
I still get someone's travel reservations sometimes but have a filter to trash them (different first name). Only thing that really freaked me out was when someone thought their bank user name was mine, so my login kept getting locked (I prefer that over wondering if someone was trying to brute force my account). I had to change my user name with my bank
Brilliant-Pie5207@reddit
I can’t put a filter because it is the same first and last same spelling. Now, if I can’t unsub from something, that will get circular filed immediately as long as it is not something I also use.
One of them is a politician and active community member where they live. I’ve had the chance to alert them multiple times over the years because people were trying to get in touch for real reasons.

Damn, I started using my own domain ~2002ish, then moved to another custom domain in 2007ish. Thought it was geeky (and cool) back then, can’t imagine how cool it was in 1993

Two AOL accounts, one dating back to 1994. Still occasionally use it, while the other makes a great spam account.
RetroactiveRecursion@reddit
I no still have access to my dad's aol account. He died 12 years ago. I open it every year or two. All those servers and bots trying to hook a dead man. I wonder how many dead people get ads that'll never be read.
