do you make any assumptions about people who live on a council estate?

i had an interesting conversation with a coworker yesterday. we work in a nursery and were discussing how one child always comes in with dirty clothes. my coworker then says that it makes sense that the child is unclean because he lives in a council estate and that council houses are for scruffy people when i told her i lived in a council house she seemed lost for words. i’ve experienced that a lot where people insult those who live in council homes without realising i’m an estate girl through and through which makes me wonder, what do people assume of those who live in a council house? growing up, i knew we were poor but i didn’t really think much of it. i thought growing up in a council house was normal and i was shocked when i learned that it in fact wasn’t, and that people apparently looked down on people like me. it’s all i’ve ever known
