I built a 286 thing! What shall I install?

A Suntac 286 motherboard with 2MB of SIPP memory, HP multiple I/O controller, 3COM multiport network card, Video 7 VGA, Gotek FDD emulator, and CF card as HDD (I’m searching for a compatible HDD but the ROM is picky about types)
Sgt_Blutwurst@reddit
DOS 7 (for long filename support) and Windows for Workgroups. You can get Microsoft Works and Microsoft Arcade to run on it. The K-Meleon browser will run, too.
Funkyc73@reddit
Windows 3.11 requires dos 6.22.
Sgt_Blutwurst@reddit
WFW will run on 7
Funkyc73@reddit
No kidding? Good to know. Last time I tried that ( decades ago) things didn't work right. But I was also very young, and didn't have internet to search out any nuances I may have missed... Ah those wheren't the days.
mrmichaelrb@reddit
I'm pretty sure K-Meleon was always 32-bit, so not possible to run on a 286. You might be able to get an early version of NCSA Mosaic or Netscape Navigator to work, but it will be a very limited experience.

Jill of the Jungle.

Dos 3.22, Norton Commander and finaly some nice vintage games like Golden Axe, Maniac Mansion and so on

Prince of Persia.

One of my favorites back then.. I also liked the original Dune but that might be a niche choice..

Damn, forgot that great masterpiece. What about ZakMcKracken? I think someone should find this fckn fuel can 🤣
mindedc@reddit
Commander Keen? Struggling to remember 286 era games..
LousyMeatStew@reddit
I think MS-DOS 5 was peak for a 286: himem.sys bundled and dos=high for about 620kb of conventional memory.
If you have a C&T NEAT or SCAT chipset on the motherboard, DR-DOS 5 supports it in MemoryMax so you can even get UMB support without the slowdown of a 386SX
AppropriateCap8891@reddit
Lots of Sierra games. Leisure Suit Larry, Kings Quest, Quest for Glory.
teknosophy_com@reddit
yesss does anybody remember civil war strategy for dos? so many hours of fun, even if i sucked
Vinylmaster3000@reddit
Maybe even F-15 strike eagle?
BullishMove@reddit
Dunno if its possible, but Wings of Fury just came in mind
Vinylmaster3000@reddit
No it's a DOS game too. Not really a simulator title like F-15 strike eagle though, it's a sidescroller.
mackiea@reddit
I'd say DOS 6.22 for the QBasic.

DR-DOS 7.03 + NeoSoft QuikMenu III + GeoWorks (e.g. NewDeal Office 2000). NeoSoft’s NeoPaint and NeoBook would be nice too.
darthuna@reddit
What computer is that?
QPC414@reddit
Wolfenstien and Doom.
khumprp@reddit
I know doom won't run well on the 286, having had a 386 8/16 MHz as a kid... But I do wonder how Wolf would perform?
QPC414@reddit
Could also install Linux 1.0 and Zork.
myself248@reddit
Linux 1.0 was built specifically to take advantage of the 80386, and has always required one. It's a no-go here.
chris-l@reddit
True, Linux can't run on a 386, but ELKS can!
HotCharlie@reddit
It did fine on mine, back in the day. And I only had 640k and a spinny disk (did upgrade the EMS to 1 meg, at some point). That’s a loaded 286 system you got there.
khumprp@reddit
Nice. I swear the most fun I had playing old PC games from that era was getting the memory configurations to work and making custom autoexec / config files.
MWink64@reddit
Doom won't run on a 286.

Never mind the components, where'd you get that case? It's adorable!
ifknot@reddit (OP)
I know right! Genuine barn find unused still in plastic wrapper with all its components - there’s 2 others I’m going back for in less good condition but hopefully make one good
AdeptnessPersonal156@reddit
That 32 MB CF is way too small. I'd get a 512 one. Check what the largest HD is supported. I load and sell as many 1, 2, and 4 CFs as Ai can get my hands on at a decent price.

I found XTide rom does wonders to 286s - you can even run an ssd via a PIDE-SATA adapter.

Windows 3.0! Windows 3.1 will run but much more slower.
Or if you really want, you can go back in time to Windows 2.0 286 or Windows 1.0
digi_no_biggi@reddit
Could you explain why the 3.1 could wear out the CF card?
c64z86@reddit
What I meant was that 3.1 and lower are perfect for CF cards because they don't use as many write cycles as 9x and above does.
But 3.1 itself might be too slow to be usable on a 286.
digi_no_biggi@reddit
Thanks. Would industrial CF cards last significantly longer in your opinion?
c64z86@reddit
Yep! A lot longer, not sure how much but you would get a lot more out of them.

I have a huge soft spot for 286s, as the first computer I ever had to myself was a 286-16. In terms of games the later 286s (12-20mhz) which were quite popular in low cost systems from 1988-1992 can generally play a most early 90s VGA titles quite well and even some mid-90s ones. The early 6-8mhz 286s are bit more limited but still should be fine for EGA games and some VGA games.
I'll post a link of a video demonstrating around 30+ games on a 286-16 to give you some ideas of games to install;
Highscreen 286 - 16 MHz, MT-32, 30+ games showcased
Ittuhutti@reddit
My first PC was also a 286 with 16Mhz (from Escom). You are telling me there was one with 20Mhz? Never knew that...
benjO0@reddit
AMD, Siemens, and Fujitsu made 286s up to 20mhz and these seem to have been reasonable popular from around 1990 although they don't seem to have been as common as the 12 and 16 mhz models. Harris actually made a 25mhz 286 although these can be harder to find as I think it was released in 1991 and by then 386SX and DX prices had come down quite a bit.

Some EGA favorites I haven't seen mentioned: MechWarrior, BattleTech: The Crescent Hawk's Inception, Thexder, and Silpheed. Best if you can add an AdLib or SoundBlaster compatible card to your system.
WingedGundark@reddit
I teresting that you bothered with Gotek when you also have NIC. I have all my DOS systems networked and after the basic OS and network install, I barely touch floppies as I just FTP all the data on the system. One thing I don’t miss from the past is the flopph hassle.
That’s why I haven’t replaced my floppy drives (3.5” or 5.25”) and the bonus is that all systems still retain their original look (and that boot up floppy seek sound).
ifknot@reddit (OP)
I don’t have a 3.5 floppy and how else will I get mTCP on? 🤷♂️
WingedGundark@reddit
So you have zero ability to put data on 3.5” floppies even for basic setup? Yeah, in that case you have not that many options. Still, getting a USB floppy drive so that you can write your dos install disks and transfer the files needed for networking would be my first choice instead of buying a more expensive floppy emulator nust so that I can get the machine running. Which you also need to get for every subsequent computer if you decide to build more. Gotek is often even slower for quick and dirty job, because you need to make the image file instead of just dropping the files needed to the floppy.
I also quit using goteks with my Amiga 600 and 1200 ages ago when I found them mostly useless so I put the original drives back. With PCMCIA CF storage you can transfer and drop the data easily and directly to your HDD. If I absolutely must use something from the real floppy, I just write the image to real floppies on the Amiga itself.
But sure, there are several ways you can use these systems. I personally haven’t found floppy emulators very useful for these applications, although I have for example ODEs installed on pretty much every CD based console I have and where those are avalaible.

Gotek is a lifesaver if you have boot problems, though.
