Macchi M.C.72 experimental floatplane, 1931

The Macchi M.C. 72 is an experimental floatplane built in 1931 that set speed records for piston engine-powered seaplanes in 1933 and 1934, from which the latter still stands. It also held the world speed record for all aircraft for five years.
Second picture is after the 1934 record, third from the Museo storico dell'Aeronautica Militare di Vigna di Valle where it is preserved.

In actual fact the greatest race aircraft ever produced and flown.

Was the pilot cursed to look like an anthropomorphic pig?
Ketil_b@reddit
its closer to his Italian mates' plane

Cant remember exactly how the Schneider Cup went, but it was pure drama and a lot of luck/unluck. Could have been going on for longer, since iirc one nation had to win three times in a row.

Which the UK did in 1931!

It’s really dumb too! They literally should have done it every year but then the Italians didn’t enter in time and lost I believe

It looks like sex that flies (and floats)

Fun fact: the reason that a lot of the fastest airplanes from the early 30s were floatplanes is because you had a longer takeoff area as a floatplane, so you could afford to pitch the propeller to optimize for high speed at the cost of a longer takeoff run. Land-based aircraft, on the other hand, had to have good enough takeoff performance because they had to take off of a runway, which meant that their propellers were not pitched to optimize high speed.

That and the prestigious international race.

It wasn't experimental as such. It was designed and built strictly as a racer.

Beautiful plane, beautiful photographs. Thanks for sharing. (Would have loved to see her fly).

Looks a lot like the Supermarine S.6B.

Form follows function.

yeah, both have two wings and two floats, very similar.
