Caproni Ca.60

The Caproni Ca.60 Transaereo was the prototype of a nine-wing(three sets of triple wings!), eight engine flying boat intended as a 100-passenger transatlantic(!) airliner, first flown in 1921 and destroyed in the second flight the same year.

I'm just going to put some wings on this railway carriage.
'What is drag'?
Smellynerfherder@reddit
Drag wasn't invented until at least 1938. Everything before then flew on vibes and animal sacrifices.

“Random bullshit go” era of aviation

It was a golden time.

Thats actually pretty close to the truth.
The 30s were a huge revolution for airplane design, and 1938 is pretty close to when plane designs started to really understand aerodynamics because around that time planes became fast enough for drag to become an issue, which led to things like retractable landing gear, engine cowlings, enclosed cockpits and open gun positions turning into turrets, all being suddenly widespread features.

It wasn't just a throw-away line. 😎

The /s made no sense.

You're right. It wasn't necessary since I was just stating facts.

I mean, have you heard of Zeppelins?
OldWrangler9033@reddit
I am unsurprised that happened to the aircraft. It's miracle it flew successfully the first time.

Agreed, everyone that likes planes and hasn't seen it; DO IT!

I still like this Caproni design

Love it too. Deserves its own werdwings post.

Caproni, more like jabroni

It flew?
Banjo-Elritze@reddit (OP)
Twice, destroyed on second flight due to pilot error (over-pulling of yoke) and the wake of a nearby steamboat. Proved stable in first brief flight.
Bonus movie (sadly only static display):

There were theories of either pilot error or shifting ballast. Bill Gunston concluded that the plane was simply uncontrollable.
GrafZeppelin127@reddit
“Proved stable?” Yeah, no kidding! Just looking at the thing, I think the worry there isn’t instability, but rather too much stability and way too little power—imagine trying to get that thing to turn, bank, or maneuver much at all.

Which would be fine for trans-Atlantic flights. If they hadn't wrecked it, they might have accidentally invented the ekranoplan.
GrafZeppelin127@reddit
I know the intention for the Ca.60 was transatlantic service, but… come on. That configuration, even if given huge range upgrades, was never gonna survive the famously tempestuous North Atlantic, and as it stands, it very much didn’t have the range. The thing couldn’t fly 400 nautical miles, much less 4,000.
To give you an idea of how abysmal this thing’s performance is, the cruise speed was 70 knots. It could fly for nearly five hours and cover 330 nautical miles before it had to stop to refuel.
70 knots is, according to Zeppelin, the minimum viable cruising speed you’d need to reliably cross the North Atlantic, but that’s only because a Zeppelin has the immense range and flight endurance necessary to battle against storms and headwinds for hours or even days on end to make progress. For a plane with very little endurance, it’s a nonstarter.

The ultimate steampunk plane.
