Rock island makes some pretty decent 1911’s. I’ve had 3 of them at varying stages of my life & varying feature packages. Always had a great trigger & always reliable 🤷♂️ for sub~$500 it’s a great deal. Magazines might be a bitch to find though, I believe they use the para14 mags

Rmsc, I am waiting for holosuns new eps carry mrs gold dot. Its k foot print, some rmsc footprints work with k frame dots otherwise you can file down the slide to fit the optic. Rmsc works on k frame but not the other way around. Rmsc will probably get fazed out by optic and pistol manufacturers

Red-dot & iron sights would be the only thing that I would possibly upgrade over time. Because why put $3/400 into a $500 gun. Wanted to dip my toe into the 1911/2011 waters and this accomplishes this with the affordability RIA offers. Im sure the hardcore 1911 people have plenty to say but my first impressions are 8/10

I picked up one of these recently for $600 and even with that price I was and am extremely satisfied. 2011 market is insane and I feel like a got a fantastic gun for the price. At this cost I'm tempted buy another to average down.
Anyone wondering, It's a thick heavy bitch and that optic is definitely too tiny for the gun. But I plan to switch that optic a smaller gun I own whenever I upgrade it. I don't have a lot of optics experience so all I can say is it works after doing some zeroing.

A Tisas 2011 runs you about $500-550 on sale, takes 2011 mags instead of Para Ordnance, and has a bull barrel. But this should be fine for the price as well

The Tisas would be a better choice. Rock Island can totally build a good gun but this design just isn't as good as the STI 2011 design. They probably just haven't spun up the tooling for it but they've been making these Para clones for ages now and are probably using some of the new found 2011 excitement to piggy-back off of it.

That said, I’d wait and see what the updated Tisas (re-rebranded from MAC this year) will cost. The optics plate and magwell alone are like $150 in upgrades so I’d consider spending $700 on the upgraded version

This ain't a real 2011 - its a double stack 1911 that looks to be based on the old Para Ordinance double stack 1911 design. They were always cheaper than guns built on the STI/Staccato design.

No, I don't think that only STI's/Staccato's are "real" 2011's - but guns based on that *DESIGN*. Plenty of clones are built on it and are real 2011's.
It'd be like calling a clone of an M&P a "Glock" - its a similar design, but not the same.

In that same vein, you could say all semi auto pistols that use the browning design are 1911/1903 clones. It’s vaguely adjacent but it’s still splitting hairs either way you look at it.
I get what you’re saying; these rock islands specifically are closer to the para ordnance pistols than staccato’s, but you’d be hard pressed to find any real measurable difference in design between this and a Mac-9 and a Springfield prodigy and so on & so forth.

Only thing holding me back from grabbing it is apparently it doesn't use STI pattern 2011 mags which is a bummer because I have way too much money already invested in stupidly expensive 2011 mags.

Yeah its based off the Para pattern. Its a double-stack 1911, but its not a 2011 IMHO (regardless of what name they put on it). You don't have magazine compatibility with the STI design and where its different from a regular 1911 you don't have parts compatibility either.
No shade against RIA either - I'm sure they could make a good 2011 if they wanted to, I just don't consider every doublestack 1911 a "2011".
I may break down and get one of the Tisas ones though. I have two 2011's from my competition days already (a really nice STI DVC Limited and another parts gun I cobbled together from spare stuff as a backup), but they're both in .40 S&W. I really wouldn't mind a 9mm one.

Reporting back. Went to pick up it ip and decided to cancel my order. The grip is noticeably thicker than a 2011. I dont have small hands but it was not a small difference. It only came with one mag and the dot is actually a bit smaller than I expected. Personally I'd sound the extra couple hundred for the Tisas.

The trigger was heavier than you'd want also what you might expect on a $500 gun. I would have worked on the trigger but the frame thickness was the main deal breaker for me.

FWIW I own the midsize 2011 they make and it's the only 1911 variant I've ever owned that was actually reliable out of the box, it went through 200 WWB, 150 reman 124's and a couple boxes of my cast bullet reloads without any issue.

I believe I have the same gun, except mine has no optic/optic cut and mine has adjustable sights, and I just wanted to add my experience. Out of the box it was extremely unreliable, it would fail to eject frequently. I bent the extractor and it got better, but it wasn’t until I put an upgraded EGW extractor that it became what I would call “reliable.” It still has issues, but they are few and far between.

I think they have some QC issues for sure, mine came with a bent firing pin. RIA replaced it for free, mine runs like a top with whatever ammo I feed it.

If you want to shoot in USPSA Production or Carry Optics (most popular) divisions you'll need to have a gun on the approved production list, which the RIA and MAC guns are not on.

You can shoot whatever you want in Limited, Limited Optics and Open divisions, but you'll also be competing against higher end / modified guns in those divisions.
If you want an off the shelf competition ready gun that can shoot in Production or Carry Optics, look into a Canik Rival-S or a CZ Shadow 2 (or just run your Glock).
For what it's worth, I'm also looking at getting a MAC 9 DS and I also just ordered one of these because the price is too good to pass up, but just because I want them (already have 2 Canik Rivals for competition). If you do get a MAC 9 DS and want to compete with it, don't get the comped version because you can only shoot comped guns in Open division (and you'll be competing against full on race guns), and I'd recommend the 5" for the extra weight.

I got a lightly-used Rock Island 1911 Longslide in .45 with a bull barrel from an estate sale. It came with giant wraparound cherry wood grips and an almost-sharp checkered backstrap I both replaced; I also added a goofy UM3 sight mount and a Holosun reflex to it. I've been running Wilson Combat 10-rounders through it and I can't recall ever having had a malfunction.
If RIA get can similar reliability out of their 2011's, then the Gucci brands (and my wallet) are in danger.

I had the 9mm pro ultra and that thing waa a fuckon beast. Traded it but I do miss it. The extractor sucked from the first shots but once I swapped it out it ran like a top. Thing weighed a shit ton especially with a tlr9 so it felt like shooting a 22 lol

Mines been very reliable. A bit heavy. Its ran through tons of Winchester white box, steel casings, and reloads with suppressor use with a Tisas threaded barrel. A nightstand gun is probably the only thing its good for. You can always throw it and take someone out if you run out of ammo. Others have reported elector problems. There is a plethora of information on these if you search hard enough. You fix pretty much anything yourself and/or do a trigger job for cheap and get it to 2.5 lbs with crisp glass breaking feeling.

Does Hayes not do it anymore? I went through mine and have the trigger under 2 lbs. The 2 things I wish were better is 1. The weight is pretty heavy for anything other than range use. 2. I wish I could find different grip panels. These have zero grip to them. They work fine but I like grip tape texture.
I really thought about Hayes when I did it all but couldn't justify the cost. It was almost to staccato territory and still RIA.

Yeah, they gave it up probably two years ago now I suppose. They’ve just been putting all their effort into their cobra series and they’re backed up like 24 months on those even. It was around 1000 bucks if I recall correctly for one of their full RIA packages. At the price of this thing, 1500 bucks doesn’t sound too bad for a gun that’s been worked over by a highly regarded 2011 builder. Bummer that they don’t do it anymore cause I’d probably buy this and send it off right away.

RIA have loose tolerances but that tends to make them very reliable. If you’re ok with a bit of jiggle and don't need high accuracy, they will serve you well. I think they do a good job of fitting into their price point by not trying to accomplish too much.
