Thoughts on insurance for ebikes?

I bought my first ebike in February and it's my primary form of transportation. So I have to leave it locked up for pretty long periods of time and stuff and it's a mid range bike. I was just wondering if anyone thinks it's worth it to bother to get insurance for it? And if anyone has experience with bike insurance and if anyone has a recommendation for a good provider.

I’m more concerned about insurance coverage accidents like the one that almost happened to me today when an ebiker nearly crashed into me on a very narrow London pavement. Also cases like this that are becoming far too common

I have a $3500 e-bike and it's insured against theft, damage and liability. $20/month is worth it IMO.

So many exclusions in the terms. If the lock is taken they won't even cover it according to their terms
bCup83@reddit
what do you rec instead?
Wind_Advertising-679@reddit
https://velosurance.com/electric-bike-insurance/, get a quote, for replacing the e-bike if it's stolen and also damaged by a potential thief.

I've been shopping ebike insurance and completely forgot to read the fine print! Thanks for the reminder. Needing to have the broken lock is pretty dumb.

Insured my Cannondale Tesoro X1 with Progressive. $84/year

I was reading an interview with an insurance regulator, and he was saying that some insurers are worse than others, but only one insurer is far, far worse at responding to claims than others: Progressive. I guess we shouldn't be surprised that the very "professionally" marketed insurer is also the insurer which is most likely to be "professionally" run for maximum profit. I don't know if that might apply to their bicycle insurance.

Good to know. My agent is great…seems like most ins companys arent great and the good ones are crazy $$

We insured our e-cargo bike through linexo. Theft, vandalism and wear are all covered. If the battery ever needs replacing in the next couple of years it would have paid for itself. Maintenance is done at the local bike shop who automatically send the bill for worn parts to the insurance. Great stuff!
Middle_Pineapple_898@reddit
I'm interested to hear about people who filed a claim and if it was paid or not
Jeff_Pagu@reddit
Bike insurance is legit but they may have requirements such as having a certain grade of bike lock, where the bike is stored overnight, etc
Calm-Rock7552@reddit
I know a couple of racers who have filed crash claims and they were paid without hassle.
00gauge@reddit
They have a solid rep for paying claims, do some searching.
Dream_walker_boy@reddit (OP)
Yeahhh this, I know in general insurance companies don't really like to pay for stuff
Cold-Committee-7719@reddit
Get familiar with the terms and conditions of your policy before you buy it. Take the time to actually understand coverage, exclusions, etc. Most are legit.
I use Sundays Insurance and for $14 per month. It covers theft and will do a one-time payout of the entire replacement value of the bike plus accessories. There is a $250 deductible if I file a claim. Pretty straightforward.
Unusual_Question9942@reddit
I have Sundays, driver ran a stop sign hit me and broke my hip in two places. Sunday's was there ready to process any claim, but the drivers admitted fault so I never had to file a claim with sunday's but they were in constant contact.

What assets would you lose if you seriously injured someone and were found liable in a court of law? House? Car? Garnished wages?
Dream_walker_boy@reddit (OP)
How the hell would I enter someone in America I'm on a bike? Everyone's in a Ford F-150 except for me. Awesome talking more about theft insurance Than liability insurance like that
blargghonkk@reddit
No kidding. Everyone worried about ebikes travelling at 15mph causing some catastrophic accident while cars and trucks kill 40,000 Americans every year. Get a grip.
godzillabobber@reddit
You bump into a pedestrian at 15 mph and they fall on their head. Bicycle pedestrian collisions happen more than you think. Or in your case it appears you gave it zero thought.
Dream_walker_boy@reddit (OP)
Like 60% of my riding is on 4 lane highway where no one dares to walk or bike
godzillabobber@reddit
Nobody said you needed to be wise or responsible.
Responsible_Cry888@reddit
Its possible to crash into a pedestrian or something I guess. You could also smash into the side of a car and be found liable.
celeste_ferret@reddit
Liability is especially high if the vehicle they are riding isn't legal where they use it, but I doubt any insurance would cover that.
bobo5195@reddit
Get insurance if it helps you ride your bike.
Claimed through home insurance with Aviva. no issues getting money with bike locked up.
beagles4ever@reddit
IMHO, it’s increadibly overpriced - unless you happen to live in a state in which Progressive insures e-bikes, in which case it’s both worthwhile and I highly recommend it.
KitchenDismal9258@reddit
Where I am, an ebike can't be insured like a car with it's own separate ebike insurance. But I also live in a country with universal health care.
However you can insure it under a content insurance for your home (doens't matter if you are renting or own as it's the contents not the building as a lot of renters don't think they need contents insurance and find out that the LL's insurance doesn't pay for their stuff it the house is flooded or burns down or something else).
It can then be insured separately or you have portable items insurance to a certain amount so it covers things that are stolen/lost when you are not at home and includes things like computers, phones, sometimes stuff that was in the process of being transported with you somewhere (if it's in the car it maybe two claims - one for car and one for contents)
But... it's going to depend on what your excess is going to be too. Some people have their excesses set at $2-5K because they have no intention of claiming unless it's a major event and it's 10's of thousands of value. Others have an excess of $100-200 and they claim the tv when their kid throws a toy at it. A higher excess means a lower policy cost.
frosted-mule@reddit
Just get a bomber bike lock or two and strap that thing up.
My big ass krypotnite lock saved my bike twice. It was $120 I think.. but they didn’t get my bike.
Dream_walker_boy@reddit (OP)
I have two but I need to use bus bike racks sometimes and stuff
hike2climb@reddit
Ask your homeowners or renters insurance. You might already have some amount of coverage.
Then make sure you have the serial number recorded for any police report. And do your best to choose good places to lock. And use good locks. Also hide an AirTag somewhere that it is hidden but still get reception.
Dream_walker_boy@reddit (OP)
Live with my parents, don't have an iPhone, I see problems arising lol
Serious-Spirit0@reddit
You could ask your parents about insurance, if you live there it might still cover 🤷♀️
Dream_walker_boy@reddit (OP)
Oh that's a good idea, I'll look into it but they don't have great insurance
Responsible_Cry888@reddit
There are generics/alternatives to air tags. I have a Samsung tag I put on my bike for instance.
Dream_walker_boy@reddit (OP)
Ah alright
