American here. Should I still visit? Why or why not?

Hello, UK brain trust. I am a recurring visitor to your fair country. In fact, I have been twice since the change in administration here in the States, and nobody has been anything but lovely to me. If anything, they’ve been kinder to me ever since (perhaps out of pity?). It surprised me a bit considering all I see on Reddit since 2024 has been anti-American sentiment, but visiting in person was wildly different.
However, I feel a sea change in recent weeks. The attacks on Americans on Reddit have become much more vicious. And perhaps more importantly, as I permanently sit on the mailing list for the US Embassy in Nine Elms, I have been getting near-daily emails warning of protest activity happening immediately outside said US Embassy… (amusingly, these emails pretty much say avoid the US embassy in Nine Elms for your safety, but if you need assistance, proceed to… the US Embassy in Nine Elms). Prior to the current war effort, I’d get maybe 2-3 emails a year from them, now the updates are more like 3-4 times a WEEK.
All this to say, I have a pre-planned trip over there in about 2 months. It was originally to see my girlfriend, who is no longer unfortunately, so I have no set itinerary this time. I’m debating between going through with it as scheduled and making the best of it, or canceling and taking the flight credit to travel domestically instead. It would break my heart not to return, but if recognizing I’m not welcome and stepping back for a few years is the right and ethical thing to do at this moment in history, I will. As the flight is with a US carrier and not “basic economy,” I have the option to cancel for a flight credit at no penalty, so long as I use the credit for another flight within a year.
Should I still come, or should I take the flight credit and cancel? Would it be socially acceptable for me to be there right now?
Mods: This post is not intended to directly discuss politics, but rather the effects of it on whether it is socially acceptable for me to travel right now. That’s why, while I’m sure many can infer who I supported in 2024, I’m not stating it outright - becuase this isn’t about that.
skibbin@reddit
I think it's generally assumed that Americans in the UK aren't the sort that openly support the current administration
GiggityGoblinGobbler@reddit
So you can’t be an American patriot and visit the UK? Yall some losers for real
Bubbly_Gap6636@reddit
People that say yall aren't generally very bright.
Bubbly_Gap6636@reddit
Everyone hates Trump. Other than that, you'll be reet as we say up North
BalloonHero142@reddit
Following because I’m also going in about 8 days and am worried. I’m disgusted by the US administration and want them all removed. I’m sick over all they’re doing. I’m hoping I am still going to be welcome in the UK the week after next.
Ok_Win_2592@reddit
You will be welcome. Concerns about the administration and the war are real, but the Russian bots who do most of the shit stirring with anti American and anti British online rhetoric are not walking about in real life. I hope you have a lovely trip.
BalloonHero142@reddit
Thank you!
Harvsnova3@reddit
Come over, have a moan about trump and you'll fit right in.
BalloonHero142@reddit
Thank you! I will complain about as much as anyone would want to listen!
Icantspellforship@reddit
You'll be fine and welcomed. We (mostly) might not like your administration but no one will bat an eye lid about you guys coming to visit. No one will care where you are from. Have a great time.
Cha_r_ley@reddit
You absolutely will be. The dislike of the US is a more political thing than it is a citizens thing.
Adorable-East-2276@reddit
Nobody in real life will think about you at all, positive or negatively. You will be fine.
AppearanceAwkward364@reddit
You will have absolutely nothing to fear from visiting the UK.
Unlike the US:
Gnarly_314@reddit
The vast majority of Brits understand that an individual here on holiday is not the person starting a war. You may get taunted about what an imbecile you have as a President and told that the US was late joining the first two world wars but seems to be determined to be there at the start of the third.
You should be fine to visit as long as you don't start talking loudly about politics and lecturing people about how the US being the greatest country.
Additional_Post_3878@reddit (OP)
Ha, I wouldn’t even put us in the top 100 greatest countries
GiggityGoblinGobbler@reddit
Then you’re a fool
Adorable-East-2276@reddit
The internet isn’t real life. There are thousands of Americans in the UK, nobody cares. You will be fine
Additional_Post_3878@reddit (OP)
I realize this. But the messages I am receiving from my country’s embassy advising me to… avoid the embassy due to protest activity. That’s real life and that’s new within the past 2-3 weeks.
Fanjo_mcclanjo@reddit
I would skip the embassy tours and go to the Scottish Highlands instead. Should be fine.
If all else fails tell them you are Canadian.
Pug_wash@reddit
Don't do this. Look, if you are at the point where you are going to lie about your nationality, then stay home and fix your country. Use the money you would have spent on travel and donate it to a legal defense fund or help pay someone's medical bills.
daley56_@reddit
So don't go to the embassy.
You do realise the protests outside the embassy aren't protesting Americans in general?
It's about the actions of the current administration.
Just don't be a prick and no-one will care that you're American.
Pug_wash@reddit
Don't do this. Look, if you are at the point where you are going to lie about your nationality, then stay home and fix your country. Use the money you would have spent on travel and donate it to a legal defense fund or help pay someone's medical bills.
Orange_Codex@reddit
No-one's going to target you for being a Yank. I've seen MAGA tourists ran out of pubs because they're MAGA, not because they're American. As usual, your government is fear-mongering.
Beautiful_Hour_4744@reddit
There will probably be Americans among the protesters, you'll be fine
Southernbeekeeper@reddit
Are you planning to like visit the embassy when you're here? Most people go to stone henge or something.
TattieMafia@reddit
Even if you did need to go to the embassy, it will be a peaceful protest with a few people holding signs. They'll let you go past if you need to go in.
TaffWaffler@reddit
People are upset with the government, and those who enable it. As long as you aren’t a strong supporter of trump and especially his comments on British service people just hiding in the back lines and what not. You’ll be perfectly fine. If you are that way inclined, just avoid politics. Simple as.
ohiobluetipmatches@reddit
Your country (which is also my country) is fucking stupid. Don't wear an american flag shirt and a maga hat and wander into an Iranian neighborhood screaming MAGA and I bet you'll be fine. Bet you'd be fine even if you did that.
NaomiT29@reddit
Bear in mind that over here, the vast majority of people do have the sense to separate a countries' government from its general population, so protests outside of an embassy (which will almost certainly be peaceful ones) doesn't make it any more likely that you'd be targeted for being from the US.
Mediocre-Basketcase@reddit
Most brits have a bit of sense about them and don’t equate a governments decisions with the beliefs of an entire population. And the brits that don’t have any sense probably agree with your governments bigoted sentiment. As long as you’re polite and don’t make any scene you wont have any issues
Separate_Rise_8932@reddit
Its a protest, in the UK (so no gun protests), not a riot. You'll be fine. And if you're that concerned, don't go to the embassy?
Mikon_Youji@reddit
I mean, you could just avoid the embassy.
rtrs_bastiat@reddit
They're protesting your government, not you. I doubt they're going to obstruct you if you need consular services, the guy in charge of you embassy is probably an appointed bellend
tulipa_labrador@reddit
Most Brits aren’t going to hold a single American responsible for all US politics & war choices. Unless you actually need to get into the building it’s not really of any importance.
Mediocre-Basketcase@reddit
This is protest against the US embassy as they represent the government, not the US citizens. I don’t believe there’s any change in sentiment towards American people than before
seaclifftonne@reddit
Honestly you have to consider the scale of these protests. You might imagine a crown, but it’s just as easily chalk on the floor and a van with a banner across it.
Adorable-East-2276@reddit
I doubt you will have any need to interact with the 10 people protesting outside of the embassy.
Relax.
TheGeordieGal@reddit
Don’t wear a MAGA hat or tshirt and nobody will give a damn about who you are/where you’re from. If you go to a non big touristy area you may find a curious local in a pub who asks where you’re from. If they say something like “what’s that like?” They probably mean what does it look like, how’s the weather etc rather than they want you to justify your entire political history and share your views on the current government (unless they specify that).
I imagine protests outside the US embassy are on the opposite side of the road and maybe a few dozen people. If there was a big protest expected that would block the road and the like it would be info that you could find online. Nobody is going to be blocking people or yelling abuse at everyone to walk in the door. The issue is your government, not the people (or the majority of them anyway!). Protests here also don’t involve people waving guns around and are more likely just people holding signs and maybe someone with a megaphone. I’ll be honest, I haven’t seen anything in the news about protests so they can’t be that bad or big. It almost feels like your country is trying to make the UK feel less safe than it is. For what it’s worth, I’ve also been seeing a lot of anti British stuff from Americans the last few weeks too over all of social media. I suspect a lot of it is bots trying to create division.
For places to go, if you like nature and hiking I’d highly recommend the Lake District. If you’re good with driving, like castle, Roman history and beaches, I’d recommend Northumberland. Or maybe split the 2. Us up in Northumberland are often forgotten as a place to visit.
Additional_Post_3878@reddit (OP)
Yeah I have also seen anti-British propaganda as of late and it’s sad. I have the utmost respect for you all - and if nothing else I cannot make myself disrespect my own family’s homeland
Orange_Codex@reddit
We're not taking it too seriously. US policy is to overthrow Keir Starmer with Reform, hence all the agitprop about 'no-go zones,' 'mass-censorship,' 'abortion up to birth,' and other fictitious non-issues. However, Trump's Greenland threats and comments on British soldiers effectively ended any chance of that happening. There's also a big evangelical strand, which culturally we just don't care for.
Impeachcordial@reddit
As long as you're not wearing a MAGA hat you'll be fine. Where in the UK do you intend to visit?
Additional_Post_3878@reddit (OP)
Original plan pre-breakup was Southampton. Now that’s out the window. I’ve been to London many times, been all over Scotland. Yorkshire is someplace I’ve passed through but never spent any time so that’s a possibility.
MrsStinley@reddit
Wales is very scenic if you like mountains
DeniseGunn@reddit
Yorkshire is beautiful. Make sure to visit the Yorkshire Dales. I live in that county and the people are the friendliest I have ever met.
OkTadpole2920@reddit
The Jurassic coast is pretty good but you can look for fossils on the Yorkshire coast as well. The city of York has a fantastic amount of history available to visitors if that's your thing?
Whumpitup@reddit
You got lucky. Southampton isn't what you would call 'A pretty city'. It's a transport hub and built like one. Lovely people though.
Additional_Post_3878@reddit (OP)
Yeah I’m aware. Have been before to visit her. I wasn’t going for the city, but for a very lovely girl that lived there. I still love her and genuinely hope she gets the help she needs. Truly.
Impeachcordial@reddit
The extra current animosity is just due to Trump trying to drag us into a new Iraq, so it's mostly peaceful people protesting.
You should visit Cornwall if you haven't - if you're able to visit in May/June, before the school holidays, it's pretty quiet and absolutely gorgeous, particularly south and west.
tulipa_labrador@reddit
Yorkshire or Lake District sounds like your next best trip.
BastardsCryinInnit@reddit
Sigh....
Here we go again.
Abeg all Americans to stop these self centered posts.
You will be a nobody in the UK. No one will care you are American, unless you plan on walking round in a maga hat and "I love Trump" t shirt.
You will be a single person out of 70 plus million herr. No one will care who you are or that you are here. They will be as polite to you as anyone else.
Leave the main character energy in the US.
Enjoy your trip.
PipkinsHartley@reddit
Down with this sort of thing https://www.reddit.com/r/london/comments/1rpzo1k/video_of_a_person_outside_the_us_embassy_in_london/
Beautiful_Hour_4744@reddit
Im a frequent visitor to rr/ShitAmericansSay and r/USDefaultism and get a lot of joy out of slating Americans online but I have zero problem with Americans i meet in real life. The worst thing I'd do to you is interrogate you about life in the US cos I find it equal parts horrifying and fascinating
noodlyman@reddit
Nobody thinks you are your government.
As long as you don't wear a maga hat most people will probably assume you dislike trump anyway.
Personally I think we should all be avoiding long flights for reasons of climate change, but we might be past that, particularly with the orange one in power. People will treat you as a person, because you are. We tend not to talk politics anyway unless we're with people we know well.
DeniseGunn@reddit
You will be absolutely fine. I’ve not noticed any anti American sentiments. I think a lot of people actually feel sorry for you and what you’re having to deal with. No one will care what nationality you are.
kendrickplace@reddit
just do whatever the fuck you want lol
You wanna go to UK. Do it.
You wanna stay here in the US? Go for it. Idgaf
Just go lol
Technical-Vanilla-47@reddit
If I as an American from Boston pretend to be a brit, will I get called out as a Yankee?
AlternativePea6203@reddit
No one here uses the word "Yankee".
"Prick" perhaps, if you try that tactic.😁
Separate_Rise_8932@reddit
Yes.
SisterRayRomano@reddit
People in the UK are upset with the American president and his administration - particularly the war in Iran and the possibility of the UK being dragged into it at the moment, which is rightfully something to be concerned about.
The overwhelming majority of people over here also realise that individual American people are not responsible for that.
There are loads of Americans in the UK, particularly in the big cities. You are not going to be persecuted for where you're from, unless you start espousing the talking points of Trump et al in public.
danieljuk@reddit
The protests this week at the U.S Embassy are about Maduro and are small crowds. The court case is about to start. There are the same protests in New York and other American cities. There have been other protests outside the embassy in recent weeks about Cuba and Iran. None of them were protesting Americans in the UK or those coming here.
We know the difference between judging America the country and govt politically and Americans here. I've been hearing a lot more American accents around London in recent months and I saw on the news that record numbers of Americans are seeking residency here, it's up about 3x from last year. So if they feel safe here, it's safe for tourist visits. I bet you will have a great time :)
OkTadpole2920@reddit
You will be fine and it might have stopped raining. The protests are tiny and tbh most Brits are more worried about money because that is an immediate problem facing us. Reddit does not represent the majority.
WinkyNurdo@reddit
As usual, the yank thinking it’s all about them … just kidding, the entire world is obviously pissed at your increasingly tiresome government, they’re the ones not welcome, not you. Unless you’re one of the wankers who voted them in. Just buy us all a pint as penance.
Additional_Post_3878@reddit (OP)
That’s more than fair.
sodsto@reddit
You'd be totally okay. The real world is doing ok. Just don't make any obvious faux pas, like wearing a MAGA cap.
Additional_Post_3878@reddit (OP)
I’d first have to own a MAGA cap in order to wear one, so there’s that.
TattieMafia@reddit
You are welcome here, we aren't anti-American. The majority of people think Trump is a twat but we don't blame all Americans for him.
EiectroBot@reddit
There is no reason not to visit. Don’t wear a silly red hat and don’t start talking politics or try to justify insane American policies and you will be fine. If in doubt, just say you are Canadian.
Natural_Remove_3480@reddit
Youll be fine mate, there's only one person from the USA getting hate at the moment and we dont blame individual citizens for it unless they start shouting about how great he is.
mpanase@reddit
Are you MAGA and can't shut up? Stay in USA.
Otherwise, you'll be fine.
People here around is smart enough to know that assholes are responsible for the assholery. We also have assholes being assholes here.
Disastrous-Ad9001@reddit
You might have to avoid a few pubs and bars where idiots are ready to pick a fight with anybody, but generally you'll find we're sympathetic rather than aggressive towards Americans.
As long as you don't wear a MAGA hat, and you mildly agree with any political comments, you'll be fine.
Most Brits have a lingering affection for all things American that still remains despite the recent troubles.
unoriginalusername18@reddit
With respect, unless you're in the administration or vocal maga, your visiting will be entirely unnoteworthy/noone will care about you. People care much more about politeness etc. - you'd stand out only if you were rude and any reaction would be based on the perceived rudeness, not nationality.
Batcheirooni@reddit
If anything it’s hate for your president not you. You’re fine
Diligent_Craft_1165@reddit
My wife and daughter are Americans living here with me. You’re absolutely fine, one or two people might make a joke about Trump being a moron. Other than that nobody will care. The uk subreddits do not represent real life.
London_Bloke_@reddit
You’ll be fine in person.
booroms@reddit
You're thinking too hard about it, no one cares if you're American. Brits mostly don't like Trump but either like or don't mind Americans in general
qwogadiletweeth@reddit
Don’t worry. Nobody cares. It’s the same as it’s always been.
CatGirl184@reddit
No one will have a problem with you at all! If you’re lucky you may even get some decent weather whilst you’re here. Hope you enjoy your holiday.
seaclifftonne@reddit
Can’t say I pass the embassy on a daily basis but I did notice a flag or two opposite. It’s likely they’re warning against that in addition to other more significant protests?
I don’t think there’s any reason not to visit. That area in particular has restaurants and people walking their dog often. Those businesses are open, again- as far as I’m aware and I don’t think anyone will take issue with you personally.
tulipa_labrador@reddit
You’ll be absolutely fine.
