Who remembers when Gmail accounts were invite-only and you got a full gig of storage?
I just found my welcome email from June 10, 2004. No one thought you’d ever need more than a gig for email storage when they launched.

Remember it well. I've got gmail addresses for both my first.last name and my college nickname. The whole free GB thing feels like a bit of a bait and switch now -- the idea was you never had to delete anything because it was a huge amount of storage, and they kept upping and upping the free amount.  But then they stopped upping it, and smartphone pictures became a thing (and they go against the same quota), and eventually 15GB was nothing.  And that was my essay on how Google got me to pay them $2.99/month.

Real question is do you remember hotmail before they were purchased by Microsoft?

I had Hotmail in ‘98 or ‘99. Then it got wiped around 2005 when MS said I didn’t use it enough. Pissed me off that it just disappeared. I’d moved to Gmail by then but was late to the party with it early 2005. Wasn’t connected enough to get an early invite. Still use it but it’s mostly mailing lists and stuff I can take or leave.

Ugh yeah they did that to me as well, it was my first “real” email address, after college. Had it for years and used it as a back up and for junk.

Same. But not just the spam, I keep getting emails for every other woman IN THE WORLD, that has the same first name last name. I am so tired of it. It used to not be that common. I knew NO ONE with my name. Now there are four that are complete and utter twats that keep signing up with my email. Job applications. Rental applications. Actual jobs they get. One is a hooker in London and puts up adverts with the email address for her hookups.

Yup-and it’s still my primary email. It was great because I could use my name, without numbers. I was the first “me” on Gmail lol. View on Reddit #81823580

Lampwick@reddit

Yeah, I got in early and was able to snag (first initial)(last name)@gmail.com as my email address. Turns out that kind of backfired. My last name isn't very common, but every dingbat with my last name and a first name starting with the same letter has at some point given someone *my* email address instead of whatever theirs is. There's an elderly woman in Cincinnati who has been giving my email as hers for everything from her Toyota dealer to her church to every political cause she wants to be in on. I obviously don't know her real email address, but I did discover her street address. I've considered sending a paper letter via USPS to explain what she's doing, but I don't think she'd understand it.

I am an early adopter of Google Hosted which eventually turned into Google Workspace. A few things: * it’s funny looking at a distro list of say school parents - you can almost age each one of them with the email address they’re using. Hotmail/Yahoo is almost guaranteed to be GenX or older. Gmail will be someone younger than 43. You see very very few geeks like myself using their own domain. * I was an early adopter of Google Hosted. They basically said “let us host your email for free” - and in return I get enterprise level email. Prior to this, I was hosting email on janky servers using SquirrelMail. Oh god, that was a nightmare. Plus, I don’t see any ads across any Google products * about 3 years ago, somebody at Google got a bug up their arse that they wanted to charge for us original free users. I can’t recall the details, but I was going to end up paying like $140-240/year. I was pissed, but was busy at work and a few other things and didn’t look into this. Luckily, Google reversed course and decided to not charge. They now call my plan the “Google Legacy” account or something like that.

Few months later he did it again for a car mechanic service so I went ahead and canceled the appointment from the email address. It never happened again. I explained the situation to him and asked him to stop using my address for his things, we shared the same name but his email had numbers and “got lazy”. Same with a guy in South America, also had to stop him from signing up with a local telephone service using my email. OG invite gang as well!

I wish I only had one guy ordering pizza off my email. I was also one of the first to sign up for gmail and after getting my first initial and last name I used the first invite to register a very common food related phrase as my second email which I still use as my primary email to this day. I’d say I get 3-4 emails per month from dominos and other pizza places with orders from all over the country. For a while there they actually allowed me to collect the points for whatever rewards program they have so I probably got 2-3 free pizzas a month just because everyone used my email, but they eventually canceled that program or figured out that it wasn’t one person that was doing all the ordering from all over. Still, it was nice not having to pay for pizza for a year or two.

I get emails for a woman who, as far as I can tell, never set up an email and just assumed she could give everyone firstname.lastname@gmail. I guess she never looks for these messages? One time I got a series of messages from a help desk about how she couldn't pick up a package because she wasn't receiving the code she needed to open the locker, so they resent the code (to me) a dozen times. I finally found her on Facebook and sent screenshots and a message to the effect of, "of course you're not getting the code, you're telling them to send it to me!" But obviously she never read the message. Wonder if she ever got the damn package?

About 15 years later jimbillybob became jillmarysue. So, I’m effectively dead-naming my child by still using that address. She said she understands. Losing that address wouldn’t affect me at all. I remember selling invites for $25 at my college. All the nerds wanted an early Gmail account.

A lot of people comment on how simple my email address is. Invites have their benefits.

I got an invite from someone on a tech forum. Crazy the stuff we get nostalgic over now. Wish I hadn't converted my Hotmail address to .live.com one. Then there was the Power Together campaign for Windows Vista where you watched some vids and got a free copy of Vista. Such good times for computing back then. It was actually fun and not this corpo crap situation we have now.

I remember I was excited to get a Gmail address with just my (very common) name.

Yep. I still have my original account from 2004. It was still @googlemail^dot^com in the UK in those days.

Even e-mail lists for school alumni were invitation-only in the mid-2000s.

Wow, my Gmail account is now 22 years old. My best friend worked for Google at the time so I got the beta invite. Got my first initial and my last name as my email address without having to stick a number on it too. I used it for over 15 years as my work email because the storage on my work email sucked and would bounce back large files I needed for my job. When my job demanded that I use my work email, I told them “OK” and didn’t.

You can tell a person is old if their gmail email address is their name without any random numbers. It shows that I'm old, but I'm proud of not being first_initial/last_name2943772@gmail.com

Heck yeah. I was so stoked when I finally got the invite. I had coworkers who got it months before me and seeing it all the time only fed my jealousy. 😄 It's still my main email address to this day.

That's how I got mine. Granted it gets so much spam because its my name but still nice to have. And a gig was sooo nice. I think I had 50 MB on my Yahoo account.
