Collapse of US Agriculture
Posted by idreamofkitty@reddit | collapse | View on Reddit | 47 comments
This is collapse related because a threat to agriculture can lead to famine, and starving populations tend to collapse.
This year's snowpack is at a record low. This snowpack feeds the Colorado River and various reservoirs and electrical dams. Millions of people, farmers and industries rely on this water. This article shows how this shortage could lead to a collapse of US Agriculture.

Fertilizer getting more and more expensive is definitely not going to help
Revenge_of_Recyclops@reddit
Gonna have to go back to using our own poop.
refusemouth@reddit
Urine is a good fertilizer, too, but you have to store it in jugs or buckets for about 6 months and then dilute it 1:4 with water before applying it to soil to avoid nitrogen burn.
mexican-street-tacos@reddit
That's not true. I've used it in my garden on crops the day after acquisition. You just need to dilute it well.
refusemouth@reddit
That's cool! I'm going to try it this year.
mike-deadmonton@reddit
What I hear, public urination is now part of my civic duty
Own_Ad6901@reddit
You literally for so many reasons don’t want to use your piss directly in your garden. Good fucking fuck, I can’t believe how often I have to clarify this.
HommeMusical@reddit
What are those reasons?
Sources for your claim would be appreciated, because searching found plenty of discussions on how to use urine in your garden by seemingly sensible people.
boomaDooma@reddit
Works wonders on citrus.
SailingDrownedEarth@reddit
Dilute it 1 to 10 and you can use it right away; the plants thrive on it.
J-A-S-08@reddit
It's what.......plants crave?
mike-deadmonton@reddit
So do presidents
SailingDrownedEarth@reddit
Yes, they do. Urine contains high levels of nitrogen and phosphate.
EmFan1999@reddit
They are already doing that. 85% of UK farmers use it
Direption@reddit
Had a long conversation with my dad earlier and to drive this point home I mentioned urea being used in the manufacturing of ammunition and a likely shortage worse than during COVID in the near term. People have crazy blindspots.
Agricultural shortcomings? Nah whatever
Ammo shortage? ALL HANDS ON DECK
pantsopticon88@reddit
Thankf for reminding me a want to buy a couple cases of 5.56 for no real reason.
Fine-Refrigerator-28@reddit
Man I’ve been killing myself for catching a felony but atleast I don’t have to go fight no more
bramblez@reddit
When you need a gun you’ve already lost.
pantsopticon88@reddit
Baby we all going to lose
Direption@reddit
Very true. I grow peppers and herbs to trade with my neighbors so hopefully we're all on good terms haha
Direption@reddit
Haha glad to help. I picked up some .55gr recently with the justification that it's "good enough" out of a 20" barrel lol
pantsopticon88@reddit
Its good enough out of a 10.5 if you don't need it to go that far.
C-Redd-it@reddit
If it's available at all...
here-i-am-now@reddit
Not just expensive. In some places it’s running short of supply
Fluid-Grass@reddit
Time for a shift to regenerative agricultural practices, thus eliminating or greatly reducing need for fertilizer, while also creating carbon sinks and better environments for the animals we eat.
Kanthaka@reddit
Agree, but being realistic we have many mouths to feed along the path to regenerative agriculture. We’re stuck because the fossil sourced fertilizer allows massive industrial farming which resulted in too many(?) people.
Fluid-Grass@reddit
We have more than enough land to feed America, the problem is we don't have enough farmers
BellaRyder2505@reddit
Yeahh. I don't plan on staying on this earth much longer. None of this shit is worth suffering and surviving for. None of it! Humans have royally fucked up everything! I loathe humans with everything in me and I hate that I am a human every fucking day!
HommeMusical@reddit
If it's any consolation to you, better places do exist. My wife and I moved to a city in Normandy last year, and pretty well everyone here is extremely nice.
BellaRyder2505@reddit
I get this and I understand it. I think just my rage and anger and hatred comes from how humans never had to be this way. The world and society never ever had to be this way but humans made it and designed and created it this way. I just hate how the nature of so many humans are. The world and society could've been an amazing and wonderful place from the very beginning but humans ruined it. And it's been this exhausting and tiring and never ending battle between right and wrong and good and bad. I think I am more just heartbroken and angry that humans hate decided destruction and evil over good. And idk if any amount of good can undo or repair any of the damage other humans have caused.
HommeMusical@reddit
I'm very - very! - sympathetic to you.
It's horrifying. We're going to literally slaughter our ecosystem, we've known it for generations, and we aren't doing anything about it.
Plus psychopaths are speeding up the process by killing other humans.
Realizing that we were doomed changed my life, and mostly, not in a good way. I realized that all my ambitions, even if they were successful, would be swept away. I stopped doing music, which had been my focus, for eight years (though living in a city with few other musicians was just as important).
That said, well, it's pretty amazing we got as far as we did. We evolved to react well in situations that take less than a second; long-range planning didn't enter into evolution's plans, but we still got some of it; we went to the moon; we discovered many of the secrets of the universe; we have created thinking machines, or at least, "thinking" machines.
So I'm kind of amazed by that.
After a decade of being alert to the coming shitstorm, I have reached some sort of equilibrium, with somewhat more philosophical detachment: I was always going to die anyway, everyone does, so getting attached to life is a bad idea. :-D
Also, as my wife comments, if other people don't worry about their children's future, why should I? :-/
I personally have tried to reduce my consumption levels (never owned a car, no kids, plant-based diet, I haven't flown in years and don't intend to, etc), have a decent life, and then try not to worry about the big picture at all.
I don't succeed. Everyday I wish for the deaths of a lot of famous people, one in particular. Occasionally, I wake up in the middle of the night in a panic.
But, well, it's better.
Sorry I didn't have something more coherent to write. I could have just said, "I heard you," with much the same effect.
Have a great day.
"I think life is for living, don't you?"
"It's difficult to know what else to do with it".

Thank you. This is very true. 😊

i’m also currently going through a period of deep loathing for humanity, including myself. I would also like to leave soon and return to the stars. there’s nothing here worth salvaging.
Collapsosaur@reddit
The emotional trauma, just that, is enough damage by itself without anything else happening from heartless humans, to deplore. You extend your hand to be kind and helpful, only to have it chopped off.
extinction6@reddit
Thank climate change deniers.
morgothra-1@reddit
Yeah thanks loads.
It can be difficult to tell which are the sleazy, paid fossil trolls and which are the credulous ninnies who buy into and regurgitate their bull puckey. But drooling idiots or evil shills, none of it helps and decent folks will be going down with the same ship.

Oh you mean the worst agricultural market in the past 4 decades due to stupid tariffs wasn't bad enough. Now they face record desiel prices and fertilizer prices. I can't believe all the people who thought he'd be great for farmers.
C-Redd-it@reddit
Racism is blinding.
OverInteractionR@reddit
It was the farmers who thought they'd be great for farmers
Swordf1sh_@reddit
I think some people of course were dumb enough to think he’d be good for them, but I think a significant portion of his backers just prefer to have a public-facing reason for supporting him so they don’t have to tell people their hearts are full of hate and fear
Waste_Adagio_4520@reddit
I’m sure the people in Scottsdale will keep watering their lawns.
refusemouth@reddit
I really didn't want to plant a big garden this year, but I'm doing it anyway. Vegetables and tubers are going to get really expensive and scarce if this keeps up. At least I can store root crops and squash all winter. It's definitely a good time to stock up on dried stuff with good protein content.
mexican-street-tacos@reddit
I've set up several raised beds and indoor grow racks to be sure I have veggies. Hopefully we will have rain and a water supply. Else, it's no bueno.
Greenemcg@reddit
President pedo killed it, and the farmers voted for pedo, how fing stoopid can one be.
Unfair-Suggestion-37@reddit
The cattle industry will have trouble, might force ag to move to less water intensive grains and veggies.
