People with depression are put in a treatment camp where they engage in a hunger-gatherer lifestyle

Not to be invasive, but are you depressed? Because this doesn’t sound like something a depressed person would suggest.
OkDrag3967@reddit (OP)
Bipolar and currently depressed. Just making ideas of how to somehow get my step count up while rotting in bed.
butterpussie@reddit
Okay wait this is kind of fun to think about. I think I’d make a big web/trampoline park, then chase you around with something that isn’t super scary, but like a taser, so you commit.
OkDrag3967@reddit (OP)
Hmm, I guess fear could be one of the last motivators for exercise. Interesting park idea though. Thanks
FinancialElephant@reddit
Not exactly hunter-gatherer, but there was a program for troubled teens in the 80s or 90s where they did a long hike in a desert or something with limited resources. It didn't turn out well for some of them.
negativesleep@reddit
These programs still exist and leave a lot of participants worse off, kids have died trying to escape etc
NaiveZest@reddit
But why?
OkDrag3967@reddit (OP)
Hunter-gatherer societies supposedly were depression free and humans are evolved for it. Sustained constant physical activity in groups combined with meaning and purpose in everything you do is also believed to help with depressive symptoms.
NaiveZest@reddit
I see, sounds more interesting. What about the people who don’t want to be put in a treatment camp though?
OkDrag3967@reddit (OP)
Well, it will just be an alternative to psych wards.
Either-Cover-6667@reddit
I’m depressed & would make you regret the day you were born for putting me there. BTW fuck face…….psych wards are for people with more serious issues than depression.
OkDrag3967@reddit (OP)
I’ve had episodes of depression and I wish that there were more alternatives to the psych ward when it comes to dealing with suicidal ideation and these issues. I think this would serve well for more moderate depression. But it would be completely voluntary.
Either-Cover-6667@reddit
It does suck that there aren’t many alternatives (than a psych ward) for people with depression. I hope you start to feel better soon. Depression sucks
Boomshank@reddit
I have crippling depression but I'm not in a psych ward.
Should I be sent to this hard labour hunter gather lifestyle?
HimikoTogaFromUSSR@reddit
The vast majority of modern people would just die in the stone age. Yes, we evolved to be most adapted to the stone age, but only humans with peak physical and mental toughness made it to adulthood during the stone age
HileeAquret@reddit
Wouldn’t a better idea be to segregate people into “timelines” they are best suited?
My belief is that if you took criminals & out them into a 1700’s Amish type world, they would be better suited than one with technology.
They are better suited for a brawn over brains, work for everything, no idle hands type life.
Some people are corrupted by comfort.
brondynasty@reddit
You’re so close.
Everyone. All of us are corruptible. There have been documented scientific studies that prove there is a certain threshold of personal wealth that, once achieved, starts shutting off your ability to empathize. Literally. One of the few things that seems to be ubiquitous across our species is the capacity to interpret good fortune as inherit/divine favor.
Now, how to deal with committed, lifelong kleptomaniacs and rapscallions? Hard to say. Honestly I think a lot of maladaptive behavior is due to the fact that the alternative system we have to offer is, as it stands, a boring, corrupt, soulless corporate pay-to-win hellscape. The thieves are just focusing on the pay-to-win part. They think we’re suckers for playing it by the book, and the older I get the more I’m afraid they have a point.

Gah you mean I won’t have to worry about all the stupid BS of our overly complicated lives?

They'll all die. It's not like triggering an emergency reaction will snap them out of it. Have you ever met someone so depressed that they no longer have a fight/flight/freeze response? Someone with zero sense of self preservation will just die out there
I knew a dude from South America who said in his country there's no depression. That people don't get to the point of loss of function. I replied that he doesn't see those people there because they all died
Nature preserves where people can get away from everything exist for the rich. It would be cool if they were accessible to everyone
only_a_jest@reddit
This comment, yes.
I’ve been depressed and thirsty. There was a glass of water right next to me. I didn’t drink.
People said “it’s not that hard, just drink the water!”
It was that hard.
gottadance@reddit
I think there are different levels of depression. I've dealt with mild to moderate depression throughout my life and what eventualy helped me was making friends and creating a community and improving my lifestyle. Going to sleep early and getting some exercise really made a difference.
So I think this idea would work on me. Being in a group, walking to hunt and no electronics to keep me awake at night would make a difference.
Crazy_old_maurice_17@reddit
Yeah I've definitely had different levels of depressive episodes over my life which run the gamut from anhedonia to nearly catatonic. For the former, changing to a hunter gatherer situation could have proved beneficial by substantially changing my living conditions. Though, I'd argue that most of my episodes would not have benefited from such a change. Furthermore, I've had a family situation throughout most of my life which would result in this kind of change removing my loved ones from my life which obviously would be more of a detriment than a benefit.
vjotshi007@reddit
Op never stated their intention why they are being put in that camp, just saying
XROOR@reddit
Lace the barb wire with liquid antidepressants so if they attempt an escape and cut cut, their symptoms will improve as they are being bandaged by the staff
iheartnjdevils@reddit
Or they'll get unbearable stomach pain that they feel between the crippling fatigue.
SummertimeThrowaway2@reddit
Instructions unclear: I am still depressed but now I have dysentery.
Sotnos99@reddit
As someone who is depressed and also loves camping out and foraging food, I'd be down for this
NukeDC@reddit
Give them mushrooms and counseling instead.
aHumanRaisedByHumans@reddit
It would work 100%
tads73@reddit
How about GFY
mojobytes@reddit
I’d take this as societal approval to commit suicide.
OkDrag3967@reddit (OP)
Sorry, meant to say hunter-gatherer. Not hunger.

Hunger gatherer. Wow.

I'm out of shape, so it'd be accurate for me

2am after a bender... Man becomes a hunger gatherer when he raids the fridge and snack cabinet...
Texas_Quack@reddit
I think that would work with supervision, the problem would be them getting back to society.
There's a comic called suicide island where people who attempt suicide get sent to a deserted island but there it doesn't go very well.
Oops-Torture@reddit
We noticed you are sad. Enjoy exile in a desolate place surrounded by predators and salty water that hates you.
blackkluster@reddit
Hunger gathering fixes it
