Where are Americans getting the idea that fuel is cheap in Australia?

So diesel has just hit $3/l in Australia, and I see on some subs and on Facebook, Aussies whinging about the cost of fuel by posting photos of servos and the pump price, and Americans going "Our Diesel is $4/gal, your fuel is cheap!" Not sure I'm following the logic, as $3AUD/L is $11.355AUD/gal or $7.82USD/gal Going the other way, at $4USD/gal for Diesel in the US, that's $1.05USD/l or $1.53AUD/l So where are (some, not all definitely) Americans getting this idea/concept that fuel in Australia is cheaper than the USA?
