Where are Americans getting the idea that fuel is cheap in Australia?

I always assumed Australia had expensive fuel—it’s not an oil producer, it’s not close to any major oil producing states, cost of living is high for everything else, and it’s an advanced Western economy so the government is going to add taxes and regulatory costs. Also, for the last 40 years or so, the most famous movies about Australia in US pop culture have specifically been about people fighting to the death over scarce gasoline as a result of energy shortages caused by international wars. To the extent some people on Facebook are arguing it’s cheaper, that says more about the sort of person who argues on Facebook comment sections. It’s the social media of choice for elderly people whose brains are fried by Fox News and old age, and those people are absolutely not looking up AUD/USD exchange rates or distinguishing between metric and imperial.
