How to watch Space Camp?

Anybody know where I can stream this in the US? I’m wondering how well it will hold up to my memories of it.
Mike_peter58@reddit
Hd version currently on youtube. Those other ones are dvd versions.

If I remember my childhood correctly, the only proper way to watch Space Camp is with an intense crush on Lea Thompson.
tincanphonehome@reddit
And Kelly Preston.

Especially Kelly Preston:

You know now this whole production just makes me tear up and tears up at my heart strings, and it’s easy to figure out why.
It was released six months after the Challenger explosion, you got a young Joaquin Phoenix in the starring role, and Kelly Preston passed away in 2020. 😢. I also survived what killed her.
MetaPhalanges@reddit
I love this film but it was the movie Mischief that really shaped my appreciation for Kelly Preston. So beautiful. RIP.
einTier@reddit
Kelly looked like the kind of girl who would never give me the time of day. Lea felt like the cool girl next door who just happened to be hot.
gatorNic@reddit
Her in Twins
hammerite@reddit
And it’s crazy how close the two movies were. The hotel scene blew my mind after getting a huge crush on her after watching space camp.
E6DA@reddit
Kelly Preston was so hot. I fell back in like with her after watching that Superhero parents movie.
Common_Juggernaut724@reddit
I don't remember that from my childhood lol. But Lea Thompson was my first big crush. I even saw Howard the Duck in the theater.

I can still picture the magazine ad for her movie Casual Sex. I wasn't old enough to see it, but the image is burned into my brain

You can just remove the movie title. The only proper way to experience a lot of things in the 80's is with a crush on Lea Thompson.

I think what I actually said in 1988 was that “‘Kathryn’ can fly my space shuttle any time she wants.”
😍
StinkyDuckFart@reddit
Kate Capshaw and Tom Skerritt aren't bad to look at either.
Durwyn@reddit
I had Kate come up to ME when I was patiently waiting to shake her husbands hand and actually interrupted the people who were jockeying for position to meet him!
She was absolutely gracious for doing that! And well deserving of all the admiration she gets!
Cthulhus-Tailor@reddit
That’s also the only way to get through Howard the Duck. Unless you have a thing for duck boobs.

It's probably only available to premium subscribers? Of course the platform will often times have a movie pop up on the feed with a caption saying something like "watch for free with ads" or something like that but knowing YouTube they'd probably spam the film with incessant advertising every 25 seconds.

jojackmcgurk@reddit
I cannot tell you all how much I despise this movie.
Incoming Rant:
This movie made me want to go when I was a kid. To Space Camp. Maybe not get shot into space by accident, but still GO!!! My parents were absolutely dirt poor and gave me a choice in 8th grade: Go to Washington DC with my class or go to Space Camp. I picked the camp.
Fun Fact #1: Do y'all know where the space shuttles launch? Cape Canaveral, Florida. Where is Space Camp? FUCKING HUNTSVILLE, ALABAMA. You aren't even close!
Fun Fact #2: You would think--at Space Camp--you would learn about space/planets/the moon! You are there for a week. Your time is broken up into classes that are 4 hours long. Learning about how stuff WORKS in space. Do you want to sit in a 4 hour long class learning how they got a can of Coke to open in space? They can't just pop the tab because that messes with the air and it's bad to do thay because---OMG WHO CARES. Those classes were broken up by 30 mins on a centrifuge (The gravitron from the fair) a simulator (that part was fun) and an IMAX screen showing launches you never see. And you build a model rocket. Mine went up 10 feet then went 90 degrees sideways.
Fun Fact #3: Going to Space Camp automatically earns you Space Exploration merit badge. It'a super duper rare!!!! They kept telling me that like it was a fucking pokemon.
And the absolute worst thing? When you're a kid, you grasp how poor your parents are. They don't say it, but you pick up on it. Me and my mom flew to Alabama. She wasn't going to go back home (California) so she stayed in a Motel 6 for a week. So on top of the admission ($1000 oh my hell), there was my mom's sacrifice, which cost a ton.
The worst thing was I knew this. I grasped the concept of how much they had shelled out. So at the end of that humid summer week, Mom asked me how it was. And I lied to her. I couldn't tell her it was a waste of time. I felt so goddamn horrible, I can't even describe it. It was like the first adult sacrifice I made in my life, sparing their feelings.
Fuck this movie with the passion of a million supernovas.
BitcoinMD@reddit
There actually used to be another Space Camp in Cape Canaveral, and the kids really could watch shuttle launches (couldn’t go on the shuttle thought). The movie was filmed at the Huntsville location.
I went to space camp and loved it. Being around nothing but super nerdy kids was great. But my kids went and felt the way you did.
Cisru711@reddit
That's on you for not knowing where the launches occur. I wouldn't worry so much about the money. It sounds like it would have been spent either way on your trip to D.C. Your parents probably oversold how "poor" they actually were if they could afford either. My folks scrimped and penny pinched on everything, but it was mostly my mom's anxiety instead of how much financial security they actually had.
jojackmcgurk@reddit
In my defense, I was basing my Space Camp location knowledge off that damn movie.

My headcanon is that this dude fell in the with the wrong crowd and became a Cobra Kai bully, but after the All-Valley tournament he cleaned up his act and got into flying, which is how he met the kid from Iron Eagle. DO is Doctor of Osteopathic medicine. Still does medic in like in hospitals and stuff if they do a residency. And can be an eye doctor if they do an opthalmology residency. It does and it doesn't. If 80's nostalgia is what you're after, it's got that in spades. If a decent movie is what you're after......
medievalkitty2@reddit
Haven’t seen it in decades! Is it really that bad? 😫 I was going to watch it this weekend along with flight of the navigator.
Adventurous_Cloud_20@reddit
It's not "bad" exactly. It's very campy and hard to watch in places, but the nostalgia trip is fun. Also, 14 year old me still lurks in my brain and he had a HUGE crush on Lea Thompson so that brought the movie up a couple of notches for sure

AFAIK it's unavailable on any streaming services. It looks like the only available option for watching it is to somehow obtain an ancient copy on VHS.
Unfortunately most if not all streaming services today A: primarily broadcast only original series content and rarely broadcast movies anymore and B: typically don't broadcast many films from the 70s,80s or even the 90s for that matter.
Most of the films available via streaming services are primarily more recent releases dating back about 15 years ago maximum.
Space camp was a rather good film for the time when it was released 40 years ago and I wouldn't mind being able to watch it again sometime myself, unfortunately the film was released at the worst possible time having been released when the shuttle challenger disaster was still fresh on everyone's mind.
Of course the film was probably already well into production at the time of the disaster so it's not likely that the producers could have postponed if not canceled it's production and release as they had no idea (along with the rest of us) that such a terrible tragedy would occur.

I remember watching this movie multiple times and thinking "When I grow up, I'm going to be an astronaut!" 🥹
Then I went to Space Camp and saw how small the inside of the space ships actually were (I was 11 years old and already 5'9") and almost instantaneously changed my mind. That and the Moon Shot Simulator made me realize that I was not built for space.

I watched it AT SPACE CAMP. We were rained out for an activity. The counselors spent the movie pointing out the inaccuracies.

This movie traumatized me as a child. I refused actual space camp when my parents actually offered to pay for it.

Try Kanopy, a streaming service available through libraries. They have a lot of small release and out of print movies.

For anonymity you should delete the question mark and everything after it. The part of the link after that is tracking, and it's tracking for you.

Just rewatched it recently. I never realized how low budget and small the space scenes were.
