Imagine paying $650 for a 6 year old console with outdated hardware
-CynicalPole-@reddit
Imagine paying $400 for 32GB kit of DDR5, when you could buy decent CPU + MOBO + same RAM for that money mere 7 months ago.
Or Imagine buying RTX 5060 Ti 16GB for $570.
Either you pay unreasonable money for HW or you don't get it at all - such are the times.
JonWood007@reddit
I got a 12900k, Z790 mobo, and 32 GB DDR5 RAM for $400 back in 2023 through microcenter. Now it's that much just for the RAM.
Jetcat11@reddit
Or $900 for CPU performance from 2019.
Vb_33@reddit
It's worse than that it performs more like Zen+ desktop than Zen 2 desktop. Many reasons for this such as the use of GDDR memory, crippled cache and reduce clocks.
JonWood007@reddit
Mainly the low clocks and power limits. It's closer to a 2700x than a 3700x.
Wander715@reddit
Yeah I think a lot of people don't realize how outdated the console CPUs are at this point. They were good at launch but that was 6 years ago, a lot of advancements since then and game engines becoming increasingly complex to run.
ToshiroK_Arai@reddit
I remember that the PS5 specs were Ryzen 3800X and 6700XT
Cable_Salad@reddit
A Ryzen 3800X at 3.5 GHz instead of 4.5, and with 8 MB cache instead of 32.
work-school-account@reddit
DigitalFoundry said they'd compare it against a Ryzen 5 3600 because of the cuts.
ExplodingFistz@reddit
6700 XT is faster. PS5 GPU is closer to a 6650 XT.
Spiral1407@reddit
It's almost identical to a 6700
Hayden247@reddit
But it's underclocked vs the 6700, the core config is a match but to match it on desktop you still need to underclock it which brings the performance more down to 6600 XT tier but with 2GB more vram, which is actually important to be fair.
FinancialRip2008@reddit
that was the silicon, sorta not really, but it wasn't ever that level performance. sorta.
the console has much less overhead and also much better hardware optimization, but also much less power budget. if you gimp a 3800x/6700xt to ps5 power targets it will be generally competitive, and often lose. sometimes badly. for raw performance the pc version is much stronger, but optimization and overhead eat in to that.
No-Seaweed-4456@reddit
It’s very similar to the Zen 4000 Renoir chips used for laptops if I recall
JonWood007@reddit
Even $250 for a portal is a terrible idea.
EstimateSilver2050@reddit
I was eyeing the ps5 for sometime but 1200$+ (CAD) is too much
glizzygobbler247@reddit
Yeah the zen 2 piece of crap crumbles in crimson desert
ProZoid_10@reddit
Even 5800x isn’t enough for crimson some cpu limited areas sub 60fps
john1106@reddit
what about 5800x3d?
xoleji8054@reddit
That's the same with any console, excluding the recent handheld consoles with Ryzen Z2 Extreme.
Also the Switch 2 has performance similar to RTX 3050 Mobile which is absolute trash.
SqueezyCheez85@reddit
That's how PCs are now too. So it's easy to imagine.
Jetcat11@reddit
https://www.microcenter.com/product/704075/powerspec-g529-gaming-pc
Wander715@reddit
Yeah I agree the Pro is even worse value than the base console at those prices. You could legit get a $600 prebuilt with a better CPU than what's in the Pro.
kcamfork@reddit
Bullshit.
Wander715@reddit
$600 gets you a prebuilt with a 5600G. From there go slot in a relatively cheap GPU and you're set. Can get a 5060 for example for $300-$350 and you have a PC costing the same as the Pro with equivalent or better performance.
https://www.newegg.com/p/3D5-001U-001P9?Item=9SIAZEBKG02363
Kryohi@reddit
"Pay 50% and you can get the same performance in a PC"
So the same as it has always been.
sky905@reddit (OP)
Extremely out of touch bullshit, no $600 prebuilt is outperforming a PS5 when you take console game optimization into account
Throwawayeconboi@reddit
even without that…
uneducatedramen@reddit
You can't build obviously. Just checked and the ram I bought in August is the price of the slime digital. (pre increase) But the optimization bit is overblown. The CPU limits it very clearly. The pro this way is around a 5060 level. Digital foundry could match it.
Although haven't watched them in a while. I feel like they made me pixel peep and it just not good for my gaming experience
OverlyOptimisticNerd@reddit
He’s technically correct, but it’s still BS.
Yes, you can get a prebuilt for the price with a better CPU than Zen2.
But the BS part is that it has baseline integrated graphics and can’t game. So it’s a pointless comparison.
You can’t get a PS5-equivalent PC anywhere near that price. And this will be further proven when the Steam Machine launches. Most estimates have its hardware at near or just beneath a base PS5 in terms of gaming performance. I don’t see it anywhere near $600 and likely not under $1,000.
Throwawayeconboi@reddit
yeah but you don’t wanna talk about the GPU that’d be in that trash can 🤣🤣🤣
Jaz1140@reddit
And the worst exclusives generation Sony has ever had
schu2470@reddit
What exclusives? Everything this gen is a remake/remaster/port of an older game, is available on PS4, or is on Steam. All that aside, I can think of Astrobot that's only on PS5 and ...... that's all I got. There's probably something but clearly not enough to stand out as a console seller.
simo402@reddit
Including some games that will come out on 2026, i think there are like 10 exclusives or less on ps5
Gaming_Pcman@reddit
It was outdated before it even released back in 2020.
Silvanx88@reddit
RDNA 2 launched in 2020
detectiveDollar@reddit
Zen 3 was only released a week before the PS5 was.
kikimaru024@reddit
Launch PS5 was better value than any comparable desktop PC.
It's still somehow better value than any comparable PC, but only because RAM/SSD have shot through the roof.
beenoc@reddit
I mean, launch PS5 and XSX were pretty good. They were both approximated as 3600+2070S in performance, and that was still fairly new hardware and you couldn't get those two pieces for cheaper than console MSRP.
Of course, it's 6 years later, a 3600-2070S PC would be starting to show its age now, and the consoles are no different.
Interdimension@reddit
Nevermind how woefully underpowered PS4 and Xbox One's CPUs were at launch: essentially laptop-class budget CPUs. All to hit a budget price at $399 USD at launch, which is understandable, but damn did it hold back that era of games for PC too.
Plank_With_A_Nail_In@reddit
PS4 and Xbox One hardware was so poor that they effectively halted improvements to game design and visuals and ushered in the idea that PC gaming graphics advantage was just higher resolution and frame rates.
Held gaming back 10 years and many people in the PC space still think high frame rates is the only thing that matters.
Spiral1407@reddit
Honestly I think it was for the best.
Game design has barely evolved since then despite the PS4/XB1 being long dead and now we get poor performance everywhere instead of just on console.
Chrystoler@reddit
My 10GB 3080 continues to soldier on

thekbob@reddit
Yup. And $99 PS2 slims.
thunk_stuff@reddit
Moore's Law was going strong back then.
Original-Baki@reddit
Buy a pc that performs better on games for less? Can you?
GeneralChaz9@reddit
If you're blessed with a Micro Center, there's a 7500X3D/mATX/16GB DDR5 bundle for $299-349 depending on active sale price. Good luck getting the GPU and the rest of the parts for $300-350, though.
ExplodingFistz@reddit
Used market for the GPU. You can buy a 3080 for $300-350.
EmuAreExtiinct@reddit
Then you can also apply the “used market” argument for consoles.
PS5 base model goes for $300 ish on ebay and local markets.
Can you build a pc for $300? Go ahead, feel free to even use the “used market”
ssongshu@reddit
Used 3080s are the best deal in game now. I got a 3080 12gb for 365. Slightly more expensive but it’s a beast and only performs less than 15 percent slower than a 5070.
ExplodingFistz@reddit
Exactly. You can easily build a killer system using that MC bundle and a second hand 3080 for $900. The PS5 Pro has no business being $900.
Testuser7ignore@reddit
Performance needs is the big question.
You can play most games with a pretty weak system, but there are a few that will really struggle.
Mundane_Baker3669@reddit
For the first time Americans understand what it's like to buy overpriced stuff. The rest of the world always had to pay 20-30% over American prices. I only wish this price increase affects the American consumers(because of tariffs) and other countries much less
qtx@reddit
At least in the EU those higher prices include way better consumer protection than the US has. Longer warranties for one.
gabeandjanet@reddit
Yeah its insane.
A second hand 3060ti and ryzen 3600 will absolutely blow this out of the water and you can actually build that for less than 600 euros and not have to pay for online.
Why the hell would anyone pay 650 for an ancient ps5.
Ps2 was 100 euros at this stage in its lifecycle
dakjelle@reddit
With 16Gb VRAM, 2TB SSD Storage and the games to go with it...
Enjoy your 8GB Master race
htwhooh@reddit
Please learn how these things work, the PS5 pro does not have 16gb dedicated VRAM. It has 16gb unified memory +2gb dedicated to OS functions. It cannot use anywhere close to 16gb of that memory on the vram buffer.
dakjelle@reddit
Who said dedicated, it still has 16GB of Ram available for the GPU and unlike it's PC counterparts, it doesn't have to run a bloated OS with OneDrive, Copilot and whatever Microsoft decides their users JUST CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT.
And thanks to an I/O system that makes Windows PCs seem like steam engine technology it doesn't have to wasted memory of asset buffering making the footprint of assets considerable smaller than on the PC.
Imagine buying a "super modern" video card with less than 16GB ram based on 4 year old hardware and still struggling to compete with a PS5
It's old tech but thanks to clever design and software it was way ahead of PCs when it launched.
From-UoM@reddit
I/O that caps at 5500 mb/s while pc's can reach 14000 mb/s?
Even gen 4 drives do 7000 mb/s
The ps5 ssd was the biggest oversell of this generation and did nothing. Notice how they never even mentioned it once during the ps5 pro time.
It did nothing with the xbox having similar load times and games.
dakjelle@reddit
You really have no idea do you :)
The PC can be as fast as you make it up to be, but it still sucks ass because games have to developed without taking advantage off it.
Which is why PCs are getting Microsoft DirectStorage, not that it's anywhere as good as the PS5 solution, it's still a Microsoft Tech and doesn't have hardware compression that it can benefit from..
Another lesson learned! you are having a great day
From-UoM@reddit
Playstation themselves stopped taking about the ssd and it's so called "advantage".
That should tell you everything.
CookiieMoonsta@reddit
I don’t have OneDrive, Copilot and other things on my Windows 11. They are easily and quickly removed, do not reinstall after updates as well. Even if you don’t know much about group policies and other things, there’s plenty of guides how to remove it and never have anything you do t need ever again.
dakjelle@reddit
lol, here is a list of shit to remove from your pc so that it doesn't waste memory on not being made to play games :)
CookiieMoonsta@reddit
It takes 10 minutes. I wouldn’t even bother though, since I have 32gb of ram, but I did it long time ago when I had a laptop. I play everything with a firefox with 30-49 tabs open, discord, and other apps running with 173fps locked every game. But sure, it’s all bad and everyone is suffering.
From-UoM@reddit
You think the OS and system apps runs on thin air?
The PS5 only has 13.5 GB available for devs and that's to be used for BOTH cpu and gpu
Also stuff like audio and simulation which are stored on pc ram will be stored on the console g6 memory.
dakjelle@reddit
You think that Windows 11 is a light OS?
HAHAHA
steve09089@reddit
Windows doesn’t really use VRAM
RandomTrollface@reddit
Linux exists too
From-UoM@reddit
Almost all gaming PC have atleast 16 GB ram for just the CPU. Add a 8 GB GPU and that's a total of 24.
Far higher than the PS5.
Even if windows used 8 GB (which it doesn't) it would leave 8 + 8 for gaming which is still higher than the ps5 available ram for games.
dakjelle@reddit
So tell me, where is all the graphics stored that is used on GPU?
Yes, in main memory and VRAM, so tell me how great that works when you have 2x the memory but use it all on a 30 year old decision to introduce AGP and a split memory pool.
Not a stupid decision since the PC never was meant to be full breed gaming machine but just to pretend to be one.
MaverickPT@reddit
That's disingenuous as the PS5 has shared memory. It's not "true" full 16 GB of VRAM
totallybag@reddit
Who said anything about owning an 8gb card?
AlternativeBat774@reddit
Yes I will pay for it just to play gta 6 (for used one of course)
InPunkWeTrust434@reddit
That’s bullshit. Why are they jacking up the price for something that is old? Greedy ass douche bags. It’s because the PS4 is going obsolete. Yeah fuck Sony. Bunch of scalpers. Bastards are rich as hell. And they still want to keep fucking us. That’s greed. Should have just made another stupid generation for the ps5 they did it for the PS4 when the PS5 was about to drop. So instead of doing what they usually do they chose to jack up the prices cause they couldn’t make another generation for the ps5. Their like fuck it we just want to make the 6 already! And rip off tons of people. We all know once they get a new one. There’s going to be bugs for the next 2 years for the 6. Happens every time. Why even make it obsolete online that’s fucking stupid you should give people a chance and wait until 6 has been out with all the bugs fixed then obsolete the 4. It’s bullshit either way. I like the 4 there’s nothing wrong with it. And it’s bullshit something I paid for that should last forever doesn’t work online anymore because of greedy corporate puppets. You can keep those servers you assholes made enough money off Americans mostly. That’s the fat version of America they’re your biggest fans. And they buy all the bullshit anime shit too. Sony doesn’t give a fuck about any of us. So I’m not going to buy the PS5 or any other pses. It’s over they don’t care about the consumer anymore just money that’s it. I know this is long. But also just done with all this console bullshit. Servers are shut down on mlb the show 20. I love that game. And these assholes shut down the servers for that. Sony are not about us. How the fuck is that fair? Like I paid for it I should have it for life. Not for 5 years then fuck me out of what I bought. Shit send me my $40 back. That was never the deal. Everyone of you give in and will buy it anyways. Not me fuck that.
soggybiscuit93@reddit
People arguing the value proposition, correct me if im wrong, but hasn't this always been the case with consoles (at least for the last few gens)? You cant match the price/performance in the first half of the console life cycle, but can exceed value on PC in the latter half (with some smart shopping)?
starm4nn@reddit
"Desk" and "Mouse and keyboard" kinda feel like they're padding out the list.
Both of those are things you could probably get relatively easily if you search. It's not like you need gaming-specific versions of these to get started.
Kyanche@reddit
lol it's fun watching everyone make funny reaches. Like "if you have a PC you need a desk and a FLOOR MAT" and stuff... LOL. There's also the "if you buy the microcenter bundle and a used 3080 off craigslist" people. This is too funny. :D
starm4nn@reddit
I recall a comic in the 2000s which was satirizing complaints about Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles (a Gamecube game which used GBAs as controllers) with "So not only do I need to buy the console and the game, but I need 4 GBAs, link cables, a TV, a house, electricity, and I need food to live? You've gone too far, Square Enix"
Kyanche@reddit
lol. Admittedly, i wonder how they expected to profit that way. Must've been a fun time.
starm4nn@reddit
Most people at the time had GBAs. If each of you had a Gamecube link cable it would be a very unique experience that no other game could provide
soggybiscuit93@reddit
I forgot to add chair, and if padding, I could've included stuff like mousepad, floor mat, etc.
There are actual costs that get factored into budgets for a first-time builder. They can't just be ignored. A desk, chair, mouse, and keyboard are what? $200 at the low end?
starm4nn@reddit
You could just get a desk from Craigslist or something.
Hell you don't even need a monitor if you have a TV in storage somewhere.
i_am_a_laptop@reddit
i have a pc hooked up to my tv
zexton@reddit
i play retro games from older generations on my pc, sega, nintendo, ps, xbox, etc,
if i wanted just 10% of the experience i have now, on current gen consoles, i would still need to buy and sub to all 3,
cant even use my original ps1 disc on a ps5,
meanwhile a usb dvd drive for my pc is €20-30,
you can use your pc on your tv, wireless keyboard, controller and mouse, is all you need,
AnyColorIWant@reddit
Re: your second paragraph- yeah, you’d probably need some peripheral to control the mouse, but this shouldn’t stop anyone that already has existing controllers, a TV, etc. A Logitech K400 is like $30 USD, set your screen scaling to whatever makes it legible for you, and you’re good to go.
soggybiscuit93@reddit
Id love to see some stats on how many desktop owners actually are connecting them to their living room TVs and using them as couch machines.
Ive tried with a controller based setup and it sucked. You still need a M&K. But in general, people interested in playing games on a TV are just buying consoles.
Kyanche@reddit
Back when I had a TV, yes I actually did this. Even a 10 year old computer makes a better video streaming box than a dang roku/fire/googletv thingy does.
soggybiscuit93@reddit
What remote did you use to control it? Did you need to ever interact with a mouse and keyboard at all?
Kyanche@reddit
Last time I did it that way I was just using one of those logitech keyboards with the trackpad. Definitely not good for gaming, but for selecting stuff, it's good enough.
I never did suggest using a gaming pc instead of a ps5/xbox/switch though. Really, it was just a use case preference for me.
About the only thing I can say in suggesting it to others here, is that the game variety is bigger and often cheaper.
AnyColorIWant@reddit
Granted I’m sure I’m in the minority, but I did this for a good long while, decided I wanted the desk setup, hated the desk setup, and now I have my PC and monitor on a little rolling cart. I just wheel the thing from room to room, gaming wherever there’s a comfy couch or chair. Trackball mouse is in tow, and on screen keyboard is decent enough for me, most of the time.
Nerwesta@reddit
Not necessarily, you definitely can put your PC next to your TV and play with a pad just fine.
The extras might be a support to put your M&K ( wireless ) but that's basically it.
Heck, nowadays most genres that were once a PC and M&K exclusive are now very popular on consoles ( see the latest Anno )
The contrary however is definitely easier, as you can put your console on a deck and call it a day ( people aren't forced to own a comfortable TV setup )
On today's state of that "market" it's not that exotic to play both ways.
NeroClaudius199907@reddit
For gaming you cant match consoles price/perf, but anything more pcs have better value. I have series x & its unmatched for living room convivence than if I tried diy-ing pc.
Dangerman1337@reddit

noiserr@reddit
not sure what this has to do with crypto
SGTSHOOTnMISS@reddit
I think they're implying crypto initially gave credence to GPU prices jacking up, which I'm inclined to agree since you can look at what it did to the RTX 3000 series cards.
EcstaticAsparagus509@reddit
It's been a long while since crypto fucked anyone over other than gullible people buying shitcoins. It's got nothing to do with any of this
Asgardisalie@reddit
Crypto started it all. Without this shit stain we wouldn't have such high prices of GPUs today.
EcstaticAsparagus509@reddit
Without crypto we wouldn't have AI..? What?
Asgardisalie@reddit
The prices wouldn't be so high just before AI boom. Crypto was the tumor, that spread through out the organism.
Dangerman1337@reddit
Thing is with Crypto with the Pandemic made soooooooo many think "hmmm if people are willing to pay way over a thousand for a 10GB 3080 due to crypto, we can get away with it as well" kind of mentality. And the gains Crypto saw that the AI Hyperscalers are trying to push.
ebonyseraphim@reddit
Complete, ignorance. Spoken so confidently too.
EcstaticAsparagus509@reddit
Can you expand, please?
ebonyseraphim@reddit
Can you tell me what happened in 2020-2022ish regarding GPU availability?
If you know then where you come up with 2017 being a cutoff is silly. The answer directly contradicts your comment.
You basically said something like WWII was over in 1914.
EcstaticAsparagus509@reddit
2017 was not a cutoff, it was a peak. Or close enough based on my own reflection, at least. I'm afraid you misinterpreted me.
Crypto mining was very much a component in the post-covid shortages, together with limited fab capacity. I agree with you.
ebonyseraphim@reddit
Ok then maybe rephrase your entire first sentence of your first comment.
“None of this has got nothing to do with crypto” — maybe the double negative was meant to be taken as accurate 🤣 I’m not laughing at you there, it’s a funny situation as I tried to read your meaning as “nothing of this has anything to do with crypto.”
EcstaticAsparagus509@reddit
That's how I meant it, I stand by it.
I agree that during 2021-2022 there was significant GPU shortage due to mining, at least partially. Perhaps even worse than 2017, my memory might be failing me now. Either way, it's not a driver to the GPu shortage we're seeing now imo.
Nerwesta@reddit
The GPU prices started to blow back then, and never really recovered from it. I wonder why.
EcstaticAsparagus509@reddit
Correct, there is a long list of external "reasons" (I'm not sure why you're using quotes) and crypto hasn't been one of them for many years.
There's no giant conspiracy to take GPUs away from gamers, they just became increasingly useful to a number of businesses over the past few years and gamers are priced out. That's all.
Nerwesta@reddit
Yeah lol, I was looking for another word but left it like that, there is nothing to really read on those quotes.
So I didn't imply there was some sort of a conspiracy, I just layed out it was the main blow that people could think of.
It starting in 2017 doesn't really matter since it has been kind of continuous bad news after that.
We both agree about the rest indeed.
EcstaticAsparagus509@reddit
I see, thanks for explaining. The gaming economy is in the shitter, it really does suck.

I kind of wonder if they'll delay the consoles a year so pricing can get under control.
The Xbox One and PS4 were both delayed a year, not because they were too expensive to produce, but so that more people could afford them after the Great Recession.
Pasttuesday@reddit

Whatever price it has to release at, it will be more competitive with an increased price PS5.
Head-Muffin5632@reddit
I'm not so sure. The gabecube was already struggling to lock in a release date at reasonable prices before memory prices skyrocketed. I really don't think Valve is even trying to compete with PS5. I genuinely don't see any point in buying a valve steam machine if it's slightly more expensive than the PS5 with worse performance.

Hmmm
Vb_33@reddit
You mean the Switch 1? Because the Switch 2 is only gonna rise in price.
htwhooh@reddit
Man even the switch 1 never got an official permanent price drop, it got a price hike somewhat recently.
Console gaming is too fucking expensive for what it is, plus all the subscription nonsense to use basic modern features.
pdp10@reddit
It was inevitable that, at some point, computers and computer-based hardware was going to stop getting cheaper, and either stay flat or respond to inflation. That point seems probably to have been somewhere in the 2010s.
ob_knoxious@reddit
The switch 1 got the lite which at one point was going for like $180 with a game bundled in. And used switch 1s are like $150. You can't get a decent condition 3DS for less than a switch.
Interdimension@reddit
And it's even more egregious in Nintendo's case, to be honest, since they're the sole console maker that has historically never subsidized or taken a loss on their hardware, even at launch. At least Sony/Microsoft historically took losses on their consoles at launch, which makes paying the subscription an understandable business model.
Sorry_Soup_6558@reddit
Of course not 😭
Yeah the price will rise once they run out of ufs 3.1 256gb nand and 12gb LPDDR5X at the agree upon price

2000s era of affordable high-end console hardware? The 360 launched at $400, or almost $700 today. PS3 launched at 500, or 820 today.
The Xbox One S and PS4 slim were pretty damn great in hindsight tho, but I couldn’t call either of those “high end” hardware, their CPUs were extremely outdated from the moment they launched.
hughJ-@reddit
"High-end" in the sense that they were leveraging architectures, specs, and delivering performance derived or akin to contemporary PCs, in contrast to the 1980s where there was a very clear separation between a $200 console with a 6502/68k and KBs of memory, and a $2000 PC with a 386/486 and MBs of memory.
"Affordable" relative to where we're seeing prices trend, yep, and especially when you factor in the absence of mid-generation node shrinks delivering cost-optimized SKUs.
Jaz1140@reddit
The Gameboy colour?
I'm down
angry_RL_player@reddit
lol rockstar is trying to sell gta 6 for $100, they will gladly bundle it with a 1k console
Thanks a lot nvidia
AnyColorIWant@reddit
I’m all for this, personally, since the pricing is bound to push some that have been upset with the state of console gaming into the realm of PC gaming. Valve should just drop the Steam Machine at $900 right now and call it a day.
kaszak696@reddit
With how lackluster this console generation turned out, even the launch $400-500 was in hindsight a ripoff, let alone $650 five years after.
dalyarak_rick@reddit
And then charge you for online. Fuck em to death.
CashewNuts100@reddit
as if sony didnt make 10 billion dollars in 2025 alone
randomkidlol@reddit
is that revenue from SIE or the company as a whole? i figure their film camera and audio equipment revenue is up there
Hot_Raspberry_35@reddit
They are making the switch 2 seem like a pretty good deal
agent_moler@reddit
I think Sony just cemented its own demise with this. The momentum for PC will only pickup from here.
Chipay@reddit
Momentum? PC gaming is pretty much dead in the water with current GPU/RAM prices.
HisDivineOrder@reddit
If I was looking at paying over a thousand dollars for a console, I'd be going all in on a PC for more.
Even significantly more. Because once you're spending that much you need more than just games to justify the money.
AtmosphereDue1694@reddit
Most people simply don’t use desktops anymore and need portable devices.
Due-Description-9030@reddit
Majority of the PC gaming market or players still have desktops.
And portability is a niche requirement.
AtmosphereDue1694@reddit
I’m pretty sure nowadays laptops have much more market share for regular people than desktops so
Due-Description-9030@reddit
Steam surveys don't show laptop GPUs as most popular GPUs tho
AtmosphereDue1694@reddit
I guess for steam that makes sense, because lots of people with laptops don’t play games on them. They have consoles for that
Due-Description-9030@reddit
I know and I was also talking about the PC gaming market, so the ones having laptops who don't use it for gaming don't matter in this context. We are talking about gaming here..
Also, funnily despite the higher prices the PC gaming market is only growing according to recent data. It doesn't help that this generation of PlayStation was a disappointment.
BioshockEnthusiast@reddit
A console isn't what I'd call a portable device.
agent_moler@reddit
But it isn’t. Look at the Steam market share and there are a multitude of used PCs and pc parts available at basically every price point.
But, If your goal is to just buy a box and be one and done, I guess it is dead in the water.
chlamydia1@reddit
What else are people going to buy? Xbox is dead. Switch 2 doesn't play the same games. PCs hardware costs a small fortune. $900 is still the cheapest "AAA game machine" on the market.
scytheavatar@reddit
The lineup of games on the PS5 which can't be played on the Switch 2 isn't so good that you can't survive with just a Switch 2. Not to mention games like Crimson Desert will still come out on the Switch 2 eventually, it'll just be a longer wait.
Queasy_Ad_8621@reddit
Microsoft was honestly smart for turning their consoles into a media center/windows 11 PC.
It's just that they were a little too "ahead of their time" until the Helix.
angry_RL_player@reddit
Somehow we came full circle and PC gaming is cheaper than consoles again
aresthwg@reddit
Used mayb, new hell no. The best you can do new is an RTX 5060 + AM4 and the PS5 Pro is way better than that, no shot
htwhooh@reddit
PS5 pro is approximately a 7700XT with a 2000 series ryzen 7, it's not going to be way better than pre built desktops in that price segment.
aresthwg@reddit
The 7700XT is close to the 5060 8GB but again the PS5 Pro has double the VRAM and also superior upscaling tech. So in practice it plays much better than a PC equivalent, especially above 1080p. Also better ray tracing.
If you're mainly at 1080p or you play CPU intensive stuff then yeah sure. Or if you get an RX 9060 XT 16GB at a good price.
Apk07@reddit
I'm pretty sure a 5060 shits on a PS5 Pro and has the added benefit of being in a computer you can upgrade and play infinitely more games on.
OverallPepper2@reddit
Lol yeah, about that. RAM alone will set you back $500 for 32gb.
thekbob@reddit
If you're blessed with a Microcenter, then it's not so bad.
Apk07@reddit
Some deals as cheap as ~$330 for decent "gAmEr" RAM but the fact I have to consider that a "deal" is sad.
mxforest@reddit
$499 Macbook Neo gaming for the win.
Kryohi@reddit
The Neo also has the bonus functionality it can transform water into wine
DoctorHacks@reddit
Uh about that ..
Wander715@reddit
$1000 prebuilt is absolutely a better value compared to these console prices
sky905@reddit (OP)
All those crazy prebuilt deals you see is old inventory being cleared up. You are in for a surprise if you think they will continue through the year and for the short term future.
PenguinMan26@reddit
I snagged an old inventory scar 17.3 7945hx3d, 4080 12gb 175 watt, 32gb, 2tb laptop for $830, 900 after tax last week, I was looking for a cheap laptop for emulation/steam machine replica. then I found that! I couldn't be happier with my decision.
Thetaarray@reddit
By the same token what makes you think the ps5 price hikes are a one and done thing? The second shelves got cleaned out of ps5 pros due to the good coverage they hiked the price.
AnechoidalChamber@reddit
PS6 for 1000$ confirmed... pretty much.
thekbob@reddit
Console gaming will die at that price.
If it goes beyond reasonable impulse purchases, it's done.
_Flight_of_icarus_@reddit
I could honestly see it at least hurting the higher performing (PS/XB) console segment.
At $1k, you're pushing people willing to spend that much to consider just switching to PC. Those who aren't may just switch to Nintendo/indie games or find other hobbies.
Loose_Skill6641@reddit
yep I'm thinking $1000 for base PS6 and $1200 for the Xbox, Xbox will justify the price premium because their goal is to have the faster machine
MaverickPT@reddit
And delayed too, I'd wager.
Remarkable_Choice318@reddit
You guys can hate on ps5 pro but remember pc players can’t play gta 6 at least until a year or more after launch 🤣🤣🤣🤣
RedIndianRobin@reddit
People who were waiting to get a PS5 Pro just before GTA VI(that includes me lol) - 🤡
ShadowRomeo@reddit
PS5 Pro for GTA VI wouldn't have been worth it anyway, both likely will be stuck at 30 FPS mode, so IMO the more attractive one is the base console which costs a lot less, guess that isn't the case anymore, so better look at used market quick if you really want to play it on launch.
Me though? I am just going to wait for the PC version.
MortysTrapHouse@reddit
Waiting years more after we waited a lifetime is crazy
Interdimension@reddit
I'm gonna assume that the PS5 Pro's main advantage will be offering limited ray-tracing (as seen in GTA6's trailers) and PSSR 2.0 offering much superior image quality vs. FSR or whatever they'll use to upscale to 4K on base PS5.
Is that worth the premium for PS5 Pro? Probably not.
jenny_905@reddit
Yeah that game is going to be hard on PS5 hardware, 'pro' version or not.
It'll be an Xbox 360 GTA V type situation but the next gen consoles to run it properly will be pretty far away too.
Euler007@reddit
At least you didn't plan on building a PC.
thekbob@reddit
Last black Friday was the last best time. I got a new 5070 below MSRP.
Exist50@reddit
Well, prices haven't gone up yet, so if you can buy within the next few days...
sitefall@reddit
I wonder if scalpers will get this news and commence buying out all the stock for such old hardware that pretty much anyone who wanted it already has it?
iAtty@reddit
I’m tempted to do that but saying $150 for a console I won’t use much until GTA eventually releases…ugh.
techraito@reddit
That's exactly what they want. They know there are tons of people like you, and before GTA 6 is the absolute best (worst for us) time.
dakjelle@reddit
we will not buy one before GTA6 is actually out.. chances are they just push GTA6 to 2027
Financial_Meat2992@reddit
So just for rich people I guess.
imKaku@reddit
I don’t think the prices are too bad by themselves, it’s just that I view the value to drop the older the console is. Like ps5 pro was great when it released but twice the price (of what I paid for my ps5) and half the life is yucky. And prices that keeps going up while console is getting older just feels really not worth it.
It’ll be the best way to play gta 6 though, but I don’t think there is any other exclusives that I’m aware of I would play on ps5 at this time.
DT-Sodium@reddit
Enjoying the tariffs and AI bubble everyone?
Pillokun@reddit
ps5 pro is already 1000 usd in many European countries.. so for that u can get a ddr4 pc with an 12400f/5600/x with 16GB of ram, 1TB of ssd and 9060xt 16GB or 5060ti 16GB.
The-Special-One@reddit
Big lies. You can’t get that for $1k brand new.
Pillokun@reddit
ofcourse u can, and that even in Sweden where prices are a bit higher than say Germany.
https://www.prisjakt.nu/list/ps5-pro--l2102549
The-Special-One@reddit
That build is $1031 usd. So over $1000 and $131 more than the pro. So no you cannot build it for $1000 or less.
I appreciate you taking the time to prove me right.
Pillokun@reddit
no the ps5 pro is at 101usd...
I don think u read my post. these prices are in sweden...
The-Special-One@reddit
You said many european countries and didn’t specify Sweden. Please read the post i originally responded to…. As for the pro price in Sweden? It seems you guys are getting fleeced.
Pillokun@reddit
yes in many european countries, not only in Sweden. in many european countries it is 900eur = over 1000usd
The-Special-One@reddit
Btw, i just took a look at the links you shared again. The pc costs more than the pro. The price difference is not large though and the pc is the better buy. That being said, i would not buy that pc personally. Big waste of money for me.
That being said, i wouldn’t buy a pro for 900 euro.
Finally, eu prices include taxes but us prices do not. So the price comparison makes between eu and us makes no sense. If you remove the taxes from the price, the eu price without taxes is cheaper than the us price.
Pillokun@reddit
I got a pc in my bedroom that is even weaker than the 1000usd pc here. An 10400f, with ddr4 and an 1080ti, even weaker than the 9600xt here, and if I wanted I could use the 6900xt(mine) that my brother uses it in his cs2 14600kf machine.
Anyway the 10400f with 16 GB with the 6900xt(basically as a fast as the 90600xt) is a capable system even today. U dont get super duper frame rates if u tun up the settings but they will be about in the same ball park as the ps5, and if u lower the settings u can do high refresh rate gaming, something even the ps5 pro cant.
I tried to play warzone on a ps5 on the 120hz mode with keyboard and mouse and it was unsable for me, it was delayed, even more so then when u use v sync on pc. Very strange and for me it was not playable.
Ps5 pro with he zen2 cpu is just too old and weak for such endeavour with a mouse and keyboard as it exposes the latency issues way more than using a controller which hides such issues.
The-Special-One@reddit
Well what you define as capable is dependent on your level of tolerance. That differs per person. I’ve seen warzone benchmarked on the base ps5 and it seems to hover between 100-120 fps so I would certainly not refer to that as unplayable.
The ps5 cpu is equivalent to a ryzen 3600 according to Digital Foundry which was released just 1 year before your 10400f. Both of which are old to me. I have a 9900x3d.
The latency issues you describe have nothing to do with the hardware and everything to do with the os stack. It’s know that keyboard and mouse on console don’t feel the same as on pc.
Finally, Zen 2 is still perfectly suitable for both the GPUs in the pro and base ps5. Most games are gpu limited and neither cpu will really bottleneck the gpu.
Pillokun@reddit
3600 is faster, 4700g which is what the consoles use but with a big gpu and gddr6 instead of ddr4 is way slower than an 3600.. in the examples u saw in df it was used so that the gpu was the bottleneck. zen2 apus in the consoles are more like zen/+ perf wise especially when they used gddr6 ram.
And yes it is unplayable if your movement is delayed... I rather play at 45 fps on pc than 120fps on a console because of that.
ultimately42@reddit
Lol trying getting those specs today mate.
Apk07@reddit
If you're driveable distance to a Microcenter there are several builds like that, here are just a couple:

1000usd for old hardware ? Are we all fucking crazy ?
M4rshmall0wMan@reddit
The RAM shortage literally is that bad. The world is only getting 1/3 its normal supply. And it’s gonna be that way for two years.

Should I buy the ps5 pro now? I always wanted to play in ps5 but never had one. Sony 4k 120 hz tv
From-UoM@reddit
Hard to justify devices at this prices that can only play games and media.
Atleast on pc i can browse the internet, work, create, etc alongside game and media.
thekbob@reddit
Browsers have been attack vectors for console modding for a long time. I doubt we get them back.
From-UoM@reddit
Xbox still has them.
The-Bite_of_87@reddit
I wonder how the ps6 would be priced
HayatoKongo@reddit
Not paying $250 for a portal when you can just stream to your phone, laptop, or another device.
Pluto-Had-It-Coming@reddit
And it still has to go to a server before coming back to the portal, it doesn't stream locally.
Many_Career_9035@reddit
Only for auth / session management. The video / IO will take the local network.
Interdimension@reddit
And it uses the exact same protocol as the PS Remote Play app on iOS/Android anyway. Just connect your DualSense to your iPhone/Android via Bluetooth/wire and call it a day.
Spiral1407@reddit
It's quite surprising that they also increased the price of the portal despite it being pretty underwhelming hardware wise. It's packing a low end smartphone chip with minimal storage and a 1080p 60hz LCD.
There's no way they were selling that at a loss.
antifragile@reddit
I havnt turned on my ps5 in about 5 years and my kids have zero interest
No_Corner805@reddit
you can find a playstation portal for roughly $50 to $100 used depending on condition.

Good job, Sony.
snowcat0@reddit
Don't get your hopes up, unclear if Valve is even able to secure a sufficient supply RAM for the steam machine, somthing tells me a $1,000 is not out of the question.
CaptainPigtails@reddit
They can't even keep the steam deck in stock. At this point it's better to assume steam machines are vaporware.
