I don’t wanna pay for YouTube premium anymore, what are my options?
Posted by BigMagic88@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 89 comments
- Don’t then. Obviously. 🙄
£13 a month/£156 a year just seems a bit steep.
I am poor. And I fully get that it’s not a lot of money but it is when you don’t have any.
I’ve got the rest of this month left then I require alternatives.
What is everyone else doing?
I like it for music and meditations and random old films and stuff. I can’t cope with shitty adverts all the time. Hence paying for it in the first place.
I’ve got some music on my phone but not enough of a mix. A few albums are at least a tenner a pop I think.
I don’t think I qualify for any discounts.

Lazy_Ad8317@reddit
Dm me if you want YouTube premium just at 32$ a year. I will share with everyone if interested
michael8684@reddit
I download videos with Pitchflat & watch them through Plex
Cold-Recording2324@reddit
Just get 1 year youtube premium with 20$
VolcanicBear@reddit
I pay £20/mo for a family account. Me, wife, sister and three friends all use it. Bonus of sharing bought apps.
Could split it between friends?
JamesTiberious@reddit
Have to be in the same household. They randomly check and will put a stop to it eventually.
No_Tangerine_31@reddit
Not true
JamesTiberious@reddit
Check the terms, it is true.
No_Tangerine_31@reddit
So you’re telling me you have to all be on the same IP to use it?… So basically only in house on WiFi. I Don’t believe that at all
JamesTiberious@reddit
Yes they have similar rules to Netflix. You can use it away from the house temporarily (say you’re on holiday or out and using your phone) but you need to be getting through the same internet as the main account holder.
I don’t know how often they check, but their terms are clear it’s family in the same household.
timotimtimz@reddit
Not saying you’re wrong, but I’ve had my close friends in my YouTube family for like 8 years and have never had an issue
VolcanicBear@reddit
4 years and nothing yet. Sucks for my mates when they finally do though I guess lol.
Berramsilver@reddit
I got YouTube premium for a good price if anyone is interested, activation in ur account too
Sue_Thomas@reddit
For iOS, you can use SwizzTube, it’s free.
sindher@reddit
VPN to another country and sign up that way
djwillis1121@reddit
I used to do that but I think they cracked down on it. It stopped working for me at least
Frohus@reddit
they were asking me to re-add payment method every couple of months but they stopped so I still pay around £5
djwillis1121@reddit
What country do you use? I might try again
Frohus@reddit
Poland
SpunkGargler@reddit
I’ve heard Russia, Ukraine or Albania amongst a few others. Not personally tried them.
BigMagic88@reddit (OP)
Someone said that before but I don’t know how and I need a grown up to assist 😂
YodasGoldfish@reddit
YouTube Revanced
nathderbyshire@reddit
The dev has left now, it should still work for now but Morphe is the new app the YouTube developer has set up
The guy who was running revanced is a bit of a tool and kept arguing with the other devs and blocking changes, it's why revanced hadn't updated in months.
The drama is on Reddit somewhere, RV Dev posted a 44 page document made with AI 'explaning' his side and said if an AI agrees with him then so should everyone else and if they can't see his side they're too stupid to parse the document lol. Absolutely wild
YodasGoldfish@reddit
Oft ! I didn't know that . I will look into Morphe, thanks. I don't actually use YouTube much on my phone. Smarttube works great on the Firestick.
nathderbyshire@reddit
Nevermind you can't read it, not the original argument anyway, the lead developer has nuked his accounts from existence 😂
It's very easy to set up though, took me a few minutes to switch over. They're small improvements but they're worth it, like YouTube is now fully edge to edge and there's no white bar along the bottom like I had on Revanced since it's a much newer version
ZippleJuice@reddit
Here's what works for me.
Android phone: NewPipe Android based TV box such as Nvidia Shield or Amazon Firestick / Cube: SmartTubeNext or Tizen Tube Cobalt. Browser: Firefox with uBlock Origin.
Suspicious_Steak_696@reddit
It’s way too expensive for what it is
djwillis1121@reddit
I don't think it's too bad tbh. It costs basically the same as Spotify and covers everything that Spotify does, plus everything on YouTube as well
Suspicious_Steak_696@reddit
That’s a good point. Although many of us are put off as we use other music services and won’t justify having two.
Pockysocks@reddit
I use ublock origin. Not only does it block the ads but the filters you can apply make youtube search actually return results you were searching for and none of the "popular today, people also watched" rubbish.
whaleordolphin@reddit
You can use AltStore, Sidestore. A bit technical as you need to refresh it every few days, but everything is free. I personally use AltStore.
Leader_Bee@reddit
Watch youtube on Brave browser, no ads and it doesn't stop when your phones screen turns off.
Winston_Carbuncle@reddit
Yep. Brave Browser is the answer.
Also smart Tube for the firestick. This app has the benefit of automatically skipping in video ads and sponsorships as well as blocking all ads.
Between the two there's no need to pay and every device is covered.
Leader_Bee@reddit
I didn't know about SmartTube, how do you download that onto a firestick?
Winston_Carbuncle@reddit

Came here to say this.
dbxp@reddit
ViTune if you can get it to behave
BigMagic88@reddit (OP)
Can you do the Firefox ad blocker on your phone?
I assume Spotify has all the ads?
I only used it once. On my mates account
dbxp@reddit
Firefox mobile allows a limited set of addons including ublock origin
Spotify does have ads but when I used it last they weren't that bad and most of the ads were just for Spotify premium. I think audio only ads don't tend to be so popular for people buying the ad space.
JamesTiberious@reddit
YouTube Lite £7.99/m?
Big_Translator7475@reddit
Lite is BS. Not worth it. Might as well go full premium.
JamesTiberious@reddit
Why would it be bs if it removes ads from videos?
The only ones it doesn’t work for are music vids and scrolling shorts.
Seems a reasonable compromise to me.
BigMagic88@reddit (OP)
I just think I might be not appreciating it 😂
I want it without funding it. I don’t think I see the value anymore.
I looked at that and I don’t want any ads. That’s like the cheap Netflix. Right when you’re into something BAM shitty ad.
JamesTiberious@reddit
I believe it only allows ads on music videos and occasionally on shorts.
You’re getting plenty of other suggestions on how to block the ads and bypass the system, so you can try those. But essentially all that does it mean more ads for everyone else.
Winston_Carbuncle@reddit
You have access to the same list of suggestions if youre concerned
JamesTiberious@reddit
Nah I’m happy to pay. It’s the best subscription we have and I like to support the content creators.
Zealousideal-Habit82@reddit
I watch through Smarttube on the Firestick and it's a delight as it blocks all the ads and crap. Makes watching YT a pleasure again.
Adventurous-Elk-5193@reddit
Can I ask how you do this please. And if you can do it in terms of talking to a 3 year old even better!
Zealousideal-Habit82@reddit

Big_Translator7475@reddit

Billy_Daftcunt@reddit
Time to rip your CDs to MP3.
BigMagic88@reddit (OP)
I don’t have any cds. Actually there might be one still in the car. But I just don’t have it. Used to have a bigger iTunes account. And it’s gone I don’t know where. I got a new one. I don’t think you can have two on the go at once.
Besides I’m a fucking idiot in regards to some tech 🫣
Senior_Sentence_566@reddit
Check out charity/thrift shops. People are always getting rid of CDs and DVDs
Adventurous-Elk-5193@reddit
yup. Just picked up a few dvd's for 10p each.
PlaneWar203@reddit
They're almost always shit though at charity shops.
eBay is good for second hand CDs, books, dvds, any type of physical media really.

KuromiFan95@reddit
Pirate your music or use Spotifuck, use an ad blocker on YouTube.
Certain-Economy9256@reddit
Anything for Apple?
QueefInMyKisser@reddit
I use an adblocker called Wipr 2 and then access YouTube in Safari on my iPad. It usually manages to block the adverts. Sometimes it lags a bit loading a new video and occasionally the adblocker gets detected. You can also try using Brave on the iPad instead of Safari, which has its own adblocker.
Occasionally it won’t work with either, in which case I just leave it a few days for the adblockers to update their workarounds.
I only care about a handful of channels and some of them only upload a few videos a year anyway so there’s no way I’m paying for YouTube when so much of it is bollocks.
BowiesFixedPupil@reddit
Family account of it's a possibility. Split it 4 ways. £5 each.
I don't think many of the workarounds like vanced, different browsers etc are fully operational but may also be an option.
BigMagic88@reddit (OP)
I’m on my own so no one to cut costs with. Sadly. Being single is so expensive 😂
MojeJmenoJe@reddit
Download uBlock Origin. It's free and works great.
Mdl8922@reddit
Cleantube/SmartTube.

Revanced on my phone and tizenbrew on my Samsung TV. Never need premium again

Firefox with ublock origin for YouTube. If you're on android look into YouTube morphe.
Bayff@reddit
Just use adblocker?
It’s been over a year since I had any issues with it.
Routine_Butterfly629@reddit
VPN is £1.50 a month. Set it to a country with a small population like Bahamas because few advertisers bother to target. We’ve been doing that and now don’t get a single ad.
kzyty@reddit
Brave browser - no ads and can enable background play
zephyrmox@reddit
Revanced on phone, smarttubnext on on android tv, ublock on desktop.
Sponsorblock is the real benefit for me. I'd pay for the lack of ads, but I don't want to do that if I don't get to autoskip sponsors as well.
humunculus43@reddit
I bought a voucher which was three months for £14. Much more palatable
UselessDood@reddit
Revanced on android, ublock origin for desktop.
jejdhdijen@reddit
Brave browser
sihasihasi@reddit
Personally? I very, very rarely watch YouTube.
Advanced_Apartment_1@reddit
adblocker?
toon_84@reddit
If you're using it on your phone just use an ad blocker for YouTube and a cracked Spotify apk
