At what point would you ask to connect to someone's home WiFi?

My neighbour and I occasionally use our router's guest account when our/their internet goes down (we're on quite different providers). I've also had several contractors request WiFi access because mobile signal is a bit shite downstairs. Wouldn't ever give anyone unfettered access to my home network, though.

Nothing at all - it's just good practice - it allows me to give access to people working in the house and one-off visitors. They don't get access to the security system, file shares and a range of other internal functions.

Trust would have been a better word than intimacy for what op's getting at here. You do have to trust that someone using an IP tied to you isn't going to abuse that. For instance, if someone staying with me spent the night downloading movies from open torrent trackers I would not be impressed.

Our neighbour below us couldn't afford to get WiFi in so we just gave him our WiFi name and password. We are pretty close though. He's always in and out and enjoys our Sunday roast. Depends on ow well you know people I suppose.

Last house we lived in, our new neighbours just walked through our front door within ten mins of their moving van pulling up and asked if they could borrow our wifi. Luckily our three large dogs told them to fuck off more efficiently than we could! On the plus side, it established very quickly what sort of people they were.

If the signal on my phone is ok, I don't ask. If I really need to use the internet, for some reason, and I can't access it - I ask. This, however, is why I have a guest wifi network (via my mesh hubs) and a QR code you can scan to access it.

It’s less about intimacy now and more about practicality. WiFi has basically replaced offering someone a drink as a default host gesture. If you’re comfortable enough to be in their home, asking for WiFi isn’t a big step socially anymore.

If I'm staying the night or they're in a shit reception area and I don't want to miss a phone call. If I'm just visiting for the day, there's no need. If I have people staying overnight, I offer them the WiFi password when we dump their bags. If they're not staying, I don't bother unless they mention that they have no signal.

Generall if someone is staying for more than a few hours (especially overnight), I’ll offer them use of the Wifi. I have it set up with a separate guest network so I really don’t mind anyone using it.

Mines literally printed and stuck to my router, if anyone wants to have the code they can. What's even better is it came with a pullout tab that means if you have access to the router you can just pull the code out.

In most homes there really isn't a network architecture difference between wired and wireless connectivity, so I'm not sure why people are making that delineation. I would only ask for their wifi if my phone signal was shit (I have unlimited data) or if we were doing a Spotify Jam

We have zero mobile reception here so it's pretty much default to offer it to tradespeople, any family or friends visiting, even the paramedic who visited us once! We had an ambulance out a few years ago for my son and once things had settled they had to drive off towards town to register stuff on their tablet thingy. It's mad, we live on a decently large estate that's been here for 25 years, but any attempt to get a mast in has been blocked by people who don't even live in the area worst impacted by it.
