Do American men feel embarrassed about wearing revealing clothing?
Posted by TheShyBuck@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 730 comments
I noticed that men in Brazil, Spain, Italy, Russia, Ukraine, go out shirtless more than American men and wear revealing clothing more than American men like speedos, open shirts and tank tops.
the number of men in Russian and Ukrainian news wearing open shirts in summer is very big and a lot of times they are shirtless.
Do American men feel embarrassed about wearing revealing clothing like open shirts and going out shirtless more than other countries?
Dr_Watson349@reddit
I have worn shorts everyday for the last 25 years. They reveal my legs probably as much as a kilt does.
Yankee_chef_nen@reddit
My generation would laugh at the old men with their belts up at their armpits. The Alphas will (are) probably laugh at my generation wearing shorts all the time.
TSells31@reddit
When I was a teenager, I would wear jeans all summer long because I was always self conscious that my legs weren’t very hairy compared to most other boys my age.
Now I’m 30 and my legs still aren’t very hairy so I’m long over it lmao.
1945-Ki87@reddit
lol, when I was a teen I didn’t wear shorts because I was self conscious that my legs were very hairy
TSells31@reddit
It’s weird the shit teenagers worry about and compare themselves for and shit lol. Two sides of the same coin here, very interesting!
GreenBeanTM@reddit
Don’t worry, Gen Z (at least the AFAB side) has been laughing at shorts in winter since the oldest of us were in high school 😂
Severe-Park-6200@reddit
It swaps in college when men make fun of women for wearing floss as a top when its -2 degrees out
GreenBeanTM@reddit
If that happens (personally I’ve never seen a guy make fun of someone for that) then at least it’s only when going out somewhere. Guys wearing shorts in the snow happens every Tuesday.
Severe-Park-6200@reddit
I mean it’s not like its mean, its more a wtf are you doing kinda thing lol
Derwin0@reddit
My son cringes whenever I wear “jorts” as he calls them. But yeah, same here, I wear shorts whenever I’m not working and it’s warm enough.
green_and_yellow@reddit
I’m with your son on this one. Shorts are fine, jorts are not
Sweet_Future@reddit
What material should shorts be made of?
green_and_yellow@reddit
Not denim
MiddlePop4953@reddit
But denim is so durable! I didn't even realize jorts had this reputation until this thread lmao
awkward_penguin@reddit
It's a very silly reputation. As an American, I got over it after moving to Spain.
1Negative_Person@reddit
There is a definite fashion difference between shorts and jean shorts. I’d make fun of someone wearing jean shorts too.
ToastMate2000@reddit
It just doesn't make sense to me because if it's hot enough for shorts, why would you want to wear denim?
awkward_penguin@reddit
There are lots of different styles of denim. Those used for jean shorts are the lighter types
tee2green@reddit
Jorts are very popular in Europe and emerging in American cities
1Negative_Person@reddit
Jean shorts are trashy. If I see someone in denim shorts I automatically assume they root for the St Louis Cardinals (which at this point are only the second worst people wearing red hats).
tee2green@reddit
There’s a lot going on in that comment lol
awkward_penguin@reddit
They just called Europeans trashy and somehow fans of the Cardinals lol
CompanyOther2608@reddit
They’re back, btw. I was in Target a couple days ago and the kid/teen section was full of jean shorts. Even my preteen was like, “no.” 😅
MiddlePop4953@reddit
Oh hell yeah, love a pair of jorts.
GreenBeanTM@reddit
They literally never left and majority of shorts I’ve always seen people wear are “denim shorts” so it must be a specific cut people supposedly hate.
Altruistic_Elk2077@reddit
This. I wear shorts anytime I'm not wearing a button up shirt but I laugh at jorts.
SingleDadSurviving@reddit
Jorts are the fashion for a lot of middle school and high school kids here. They all dress like we did in the 90s and 2000s.
superkt3@reddit
Even in Massachusetts there are always a few guys who wear shorts year round, even in the snow.
WorkerAmbitious2072@reddit
Shirtless, that’s generally considered rude or out of place except within certain contexts like at a pool or beach. Most businesses require a shirt or top be worn
If you mean speedo like at the beach that’s not a very American man thing yet
Open shirts or tank tops are open season when it’s warm generally
M477M4NN@reddit
Speedos are gay coded in the US. Go to a regular beach and you won’t see many speedos, go to a gay beach and you will see an abundance of speedos and other revealing apparel. Straight men in the US hate even the idea of possibly being seen as gay.
Puzzled-Painter3301@reddit
Yes I'm gay and watch men in speedos on the internet.
RawrRawr83@reddit
Also straight men aren’t exactly in speedo shape most of the time. Gay men are
Relevant-Emu5782@reddit
It's common but I wouldn't say it's accepted. In my area people will open their car window and yell at men to "put some fucking clothes on" when a man is running shirtless on the sidewalk in residential areas.
WorkerAmbitious2072@reddit
I mean that might happen in places but is not IME super common or a big deal if the one without a shirt avoids making a big issue out of it and escalating the situation
Longjumping_Pair_672@reddit
"Open shirts or tank tops are open season when it’s warm generally"
shirtless and open shirts are common in warm climates too.
these people believe tv is america
WorkerAmbitious2072@reddit
I live in the Deep South where it’s plenty warm and shirtless is public is a rarity
Longjumping_Pair_672@reddit
lived in north carolina and southern va. barely ever wore a shirt in summer
WorkerAmbitious2072@reddit
That’s weird
diversalarums@reddit
Speedos were really a big fad during the 1980s. There's a reason that fad died out. Urgh.
RhymenoserousRex@reddit
I hate the damn things, I was a competition swimmer for a while and let me tell you speedos make jumping in low temp water much worse than a decent pair of trunks.
blking@reddit
I saw guys in them all the time in the 90’s and early 2000’s. But I was a competitive swimmer so…
CG20370417@reddit
I grew up competitively swimming, and if im honest, if not for the looks--I prefer a speedo while swimming.
And for getting in a wetsuit to surf or scuba or spear fish or something--a speedo under near is much more comfy than your scrunched up board shorts.
Until I was in college...when a potential wardrobe malfunction could be a conversation starter, not a source of infinite embarrassment...I would wear a speedo under my board shorts even for like a beach day or pool day.
I grew up in coastal CA, class of 08.
VoidWalker4Lyfe@reddit
I swam in high school and we didn't wear speedos, but we wore jammers. It's a good balance between briefs and board shorts. I don't really have any hobbies that require a wetsuit but I would definitely wear jammers under them instead of trunks.
CG20370417@reddit
Jammers are the worst, tbh.
I wore them as a young'in. I didn't show up to CA until freshmen year of high school.
Prior to that I had lived in OH, MD, PA and IL (and WA, but I didnt swim then was a baby) and worse a jammer in those places.
It was awkward freshmen year, seeing all the guys rocking speedo's a mocking the jammer wearers--sort of the inverse of everywhere else, where the jammer folk teased the lone speedo wearer...
But for water polo there was no alternative. You needed double walled speedos...or its just more fabric someone can grab onto to drown you with.
By the end of water polo season (fall sport) the "ick" was gone. And by the end of freshmen year, certainly by end of high school and later college, just no shame. And a genuine preference.
Feels slicker to swim in a speedo than a jammer (sure its psychosomatic with the water along your upper thighs)...
VoidWalker4Lyfe@reddit
I like them! And you have less leg to shave 🤣
CG20370417@reddit
I will say, the best was to when they were wet, tie them tight, and then open them rapidly sucking in air....like dutch ovening your own midsection...but with air, not fart...
And then the jammer would stay all poofy. The water sealed the fabric and the elastic and cords on your trunk and thighs kept it in too.
There was really no point beyond that, other than it looking amusing.
VoidWalker4Lyfe@reddit
I think mine were too tight for that! 🤣 I have tree trunk legs
blking@reddit
I’m not a dude, but they do seem practical if you’re in any water sport.
CG20370417@reddit
'Dude' should really be officially recognized as gender neutral.
Tbh I think that would be bipartisan legislation that would squash the culture war.
kayakchick66@reddit
WHERE? We laughed at ANYONE wearing them on the east coast, beach town. Class of '84. Wear a weenie bender, get laughed at. The only people I ever saw wear one were on swim team.
IPreferDiamonds@reddit
Yes! I'm Class of 86 and live two hours from the Atlantic Ocean. I never saw anyone wear speedos in the 80s.
PintoOct24@reddit
I grew up on the east coast. If I saw a man in speedos, I assumed he was European or off the boat.
few-piglet4357@reddit
Yup! No speedos on the left coast in the 80s either.
GrowlingAtTheWorld@reddit
I saw one in the very late 90s wearing a Speedo thong walking down the sea wall in a city riverside park. Had the old ladies in all in a twitter in his wake. He could carry it off well but he sure cause a lot of pearl clutching.
According-Couple2744@reddit
Class of 84, an hour and a half from the Atlantic, and never saw them.
LSATDan@reddit
Class of '84 and never worr 'em and never wanted to see 'em.

cohrt@reddit
And French Canadians.
mama_ste@reddit
Or they were Québécois. They’d descend on my east coast beach town every winter to play bocce ball in their Speedos.
cohrt@reddit
Yup. See them all the time in Wildwood.
Big_Act5424@reddit
I lived in a border resort town in the northeast and the only people wearing speedos were Canadian tourists.
diversalarums@reddit
I was in Florida in the early '80s. I spent a lot of time on boats and beaches and saw way more than I ever wanted to. But I wasn't a kid; our group included people in their 20s to 40s.
leeloocal@reddit
I grew up in SoCal in the 80s and 90s, and same. My dad had to explain what a “banana hammock” was after one of my uncles made the joke.
kebabby72@reddit
England, kids, 80's. If you owned a pair of Speedos and they had the stick-on logo type, the first S was coming off. If they had the embroidery logo, the first S was getting coloured-in.
ctcaa90@reddit
Agree! Yes there is a reason! I was at the beach last year, and an older man and lady beside of me got up to collect their items. I looked to the left of me, and there it was! He was bent over with his bottom towards me, and legs slightly apart. All of his fruit hanging almost eye level.
ItchClown@reddit
Low hanging fruit.
GreenBeanTM@reddit
The reason wasn’t old people, it was because society deemed a whole bunch of random shit “gay”, Speedos being one of them.
ctcaa90@reddit
I only said older man for a story visual. For sure not the issue being an older man.
Skinnidipped@reddit
That sounds more like a thong / g-string.
Yes, Americans (and some? Many? Most?) others commonly refer to anything less than trunks for men as “a speedo” but shouldn’t. Speedo (tm) is a brand, and that doesn’t make anything that “lets the fruit hang”. The “skimpiest” thing made by Speedo is the briefs you see competition divers or water polo players wearing. They also make trunks and board shorts that would satisfy anyone’s modesty. There may be a bulge in the briefs but not “hanging fruit”.
Some of us wear swim briefs (about as “revealing” as a pair of tighty whites) as they’re about the best thing to wear if you have to wear anything. Packs small in the suitcase, doesn’t drag 5 gallons of water with you when you get out of the water. Dries fast. No chaffing/rubbing.
ctcaa90@reddit
No, it was a Speedo for sure. Nothing was actually hanging out. Speedo can’t compress it all but so much. It was because he was stooped over. Imagine what happens to it all when you part your legs so you can stoop over to gather your items. Nothing was wrong with him for say. Just not the best thing to turn your head to and there it all is when you’re not used to a small fitted bathing suits on men in the 1st place.
According-Couple2744@reddit
Yikes!!!😳
jacehoffman@reddit
:(
nosidrah@reddit
I’ve been going to beaches in Virginia and NC for fifty years and never seen anyone in a Speedo.
Living-Night4476@reddit
Same…. I still have nightmares of my dad in a Speedo…. And it’s because he finally switched to briefs like only 10 years ago and he is in his 80s now
Skinnidipped@reddit
This confuses me. What do you consider “briefs” and “speedos”? Because briefs are the smallest things Speedo makes.
VoidWalker4Lyfe@reddit
Technically "briefs" are the correct term for what most people call a "speedo."
Skinnidipped@reddit
Yes and no. Many people lump in (pardon the expression) thongs, pouches and g-strings into what they call speedos.
Living-Night4476@reddit
The almost thong speedo to now his butt is finally mostly covered. I am still trying for trunks but he says he doesn’t like the feel of being all looseygoosey down there
Skinnidipped@reddit
Ahhh ok.
Personally I’m in my 50s, not in primo shape but not fat either. Put it this way - I usually don’t go to a ladder/stairs because I’m still plenty nimble to hoist myself out without one.
I like wearing briefs and don’t see anything wrong with them…but I have zero interest in wearing thongs. I also generally don’t pay attention to what other men wear, but I wouldn’t be happy seeing thongs either. :D
I also have primarily worn briefs for lap swimming but wouldn’t see an issue at beach or water park either. If the kids and parents can tolerate briefs at Y swim classes, just shouldn’t be an issue.
If you could spend a day in the water wearing the trunks you want him to wear, you might understand at least my opinion a little better. I’ve not found a pair of “trunks” that wasn’t annoying AF to walk around in wet…or climbing out of the pool.
Living-Night4476@reddit
Oh my dad is skinny like 6’1” and 140lbs so maybe for me to get the equivalent to him cause I am much heavier I’d have to go two sizes up? Hmmm 🤔 something to think about for upcoming lake season
Skinnidipped@reddit
Yeah. I'm not actually suggesting you waste good money on a mens suit just to find out. :D I actually didn't even start wearing briefs until...I dunno, 10 years ago? As a teenager I didn't want to as I was a bit chubbier back then. When I bought my first I was hyper self conscious for about the first 10 seconds in public and then it was an "Ohhhh. I've been missing out." feeling.
The kind of things I notice if I wear trunks or board shorts...
1: The fabric impedes movement. Normal walking or swimming is "OK" in that it doesn't stop me from walking/swimming, but I feel the fabric rub in various places. Also, I kinda lose the ability to climb out of the pool without a ladder because I can't lift a knee high enough to put my foot on the side.
2: Walking around just after getting out of the pool there's this constant flow of water draining out that feels like I'm peeing myself.
3: When I take 'em off, I can get 'em mostly dry with a quick squeeze. And they fit in my luggage like a pair of socks rather than...well...a pair of cargo shorts. Great for travel.
4: I can't say swimming was "difficult" with greater coverage but briefs I literally don't feel at all.
Personally I hate the "genericization" of the word "Speedo" because of exactly what happened here - you used the term to mean thongs, and Speedo doesn't even make anything for men that doesn't do full butt coverage. Hah.
auntlynnie@reddit
My FATHER was a Speedo wearer, even as he got older. It was traumatizing. LOL
Ok-Tomorrow6634@reddit
The proverbial “Banana Hammock”.

There was a bit of a fad but it still wasn't something done by the majority.
I used to go on vacation at the Jersey shore in the 80s with my family, and speedos were how you spotted the French-Canadian tourists on the beach, because American men generally wore swim trunks.
FinanceGuyHere@reddit
Yeah, the reason is they are super itchy!
IPreferDiamonds@reddit
I graduated high school in 1986. Speedos were not popular or a fad in my area. And I live near the ocean.
diversalarums@reddit
I wasn't in a high school crowd so that may be the difference. My friends were 20s to 40s.

Any runners wanting to hop on the shirtless running trend this summer, be careful about sunburn. I see lots of alarmingly red sunburns on runners.
Pl0OnReddit@reddit
It also dehydrates you alot quicker. A sweat soaked shirt is better than all your sweat evaporating.
jupitermoonflow@reddit
I’ve noticed men’s shorts are shorter now. Like when they’re out running, I see a lot men in short shorts. It could be a college town thing tho idk
WorkerAmbitious2072@reddit
100%
I’m a runner and I wear long sleeves during the day in the summer most of the time. Breathable (ish) UPF rated running shirts are a thing
sindelic@reddit
Do you have any thoughts on microplastics from the polyester? I hear we have more and more in our bodies being absorbed often through the skin from clothes
WorkerAmbitious2072@reddit
I only just came across the idea recently
My thoughts currently are that synthetic shirts are the best performers for keeping cool, and protect from the sun even better than sunscreen does, and I’ve had skin cancer, so I’m going to wear the best performing shirts that also protect from UV and see where this goes
Because running in cotton sucks, wool only holds together well with synthetic help seemingly, sunscreens have chemicals and we’re always seeming to reevaluate wha chemicals are how bad etc…what else is one to do?
netsurf916@reddit
There used to be all those signs "no shoes, no shirt, no service" when I was growing up. I always found it weird they didn't care about pants and I always wanted to drop by in shoes and shirt only to see what happens.
WorkerAmbitious2072@reddit
People without bottoms wasn’t a problem to address
The signs also didn’t say no shitting on the tables, because it usually wasn’t an issue that came up
mercurialpolyglot@reddit
There’s also this random stigma against men wearing open shoes when more than 15 miles away from a beach. I think it’s fading with the generations, like I’ve never cared but my mom still thinks man feet are gross to see out in public. But still, if you see a man wearing sandals in a city, there’s a solid chance he’s an international tourist.
woodsred@reddit
Idk why you're being downvoted. Just because a lot of guys are oblivious to older people and some women judging them for exposed feet, doesn't mean that it isn't happening. I wouldn't mark someone in Birks or Tevas as a tourist immediately, but a straight-looking adult man in flip flops and not at the beach? Tourist will be my first assumption.
Triscuitmeniscus@reddit
Assuming the weather was warm and the situation informal sandals/flip flops have been normal footwear in every place I’ve lived or worked, including Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, Washington and even Alaska. You see granola types wearing Tevas in the freaking Rockies.
TSells31@reddit
Granola types is sending me lol. It’s funny because I’ve never heard that term, but I know exactly what you mean.
woodsred@reddit
"Crunchy" is another fun one from the same turn of phrase ("crunchy granola"). Crunchy can be an adjective or a noun.
TSells31@reddit
Hmm, I’ve never experienced this in my life lol. I personally don’t wear sandals because I just prefer the look and support of sneakers, but in my 30 years of life in Iowa, men wearing sandals has never been taboo or frowned upon
meimlikeaghost@reddit

Speedos are out of fashion in the US. But only really for the past thirty years or so. They were popular prior to that. I think it’s a good thing that they’re unpopular; not because I’d be embarrassed to wear one, but because most people don’t want to see some stranger’s bulge.
kayakchick66@reddit
Longer than 30 years. We would laugh at guys who wore them in high school, 80s. And no, not a high school guy wearing them. That wouldn't happen. In a beach town, if we saw someone wearing one it was a laughing scandal. We called them weenie benders.
tomhsmith@reddit
I've seen your '80s running shorts.
kayakchick66@reddit
Oh, the guys definitely wore short shorts. Even board shorts were short. Sky is out, thighs are out. But NOT weenie benders.
Curmudgy@reddit
I always thought that by definition, board shorts were long. Is my understanding of board shorts incorrect?
SignificantApricot69@reddit
I think you are more correct though perhaps some being pedantic over semantics… to me there are swim shorts or swim trunks and there are board shorts and they aren’t exactly the same. I grew up in a beach town in the 80s/90s with a lot of surf shops and such, and the normal style was either shorts with a liner that were maybe 5 inches or so OR longer shorts we call board shorts that were closer to knee length.
Curmudgy@reddit
That’s my understanding, too. The board shorts usually didn’t have a liner.
tomhsmith@reddit
I thought it was more of a transition. I grew up in Southern California and board shorts were more nineties I thought. We weren't quite a "beach town", though adjacent. Basketball made the same switch to longer shorts around the same time.
serpentjaguar@reddit
I grew up in NorCal, and I swear, I can almost remember the summer, to the day, when allasudden, if you were a cool skate-punk kid, you wore big shorts if you were going to wear shorts at all.
I think it was '89 or '90, but maybe I misremember.
Anyhow, in my very skateboard-centric NorCal town (known for producing a disproportionate number of pro skateboarders), the transition to big shorts happened nearly overnight, and your friends would razz you if your shorts landed above the knee.
shelwood46@reddit
Oh 70s men shorts were even worse. So many men... fell out, especially of the really highly cut jorts.
IPreferDiamonds@reddit
Early to mid 1980s shorts were short.
wolferiver@reddit
Yes. Class of '76 here, and definitely mens' shorts were real short. Not Speedo briefs short, though. That was laughable even then. Outside of for competitive swimming, I can't remember a time when it was routine for guys to wear Speedos.
If you watch episodes of old Magnum PI, the original show with Tom Selleck, he wears short shorts all the time.
elucify@reddit
I graduated from high school, suburban Indianapolis, 1980. "Uniform" for swimming in physical education class was speedo. Still unremarkable at Purdue in early 80s. Also very common at public pools at that time.
Oddly, it seems to me speedos fell out of fashion around the same time that eroticized male body images started to appear in advertising in the US (Calvin Klein underwear ads, for example.) Those kinds of images were extremely rare in mass advertising before then.
Curmudgy@reddit
It was also the time when gay male culture was becoming more visible. But I'm not sure that was the trigger. I remember the push for not forcing high school boys to swim nude or shower in gang showers beginning in the 60s. While nude isn't the same as speedos, there is a connection.
TSells31@reddit
I never had to swim nude, but the gang showers were still a thing for me in the late 00s-2010. It made damn near every boy dread the swimming unit lol.
elucify@reddit
I've only recently read about the nude swimming thing. Kind of sus if you ask me.
We had nude showers 50 years ago and we hated it, too. Especially when the freshmen who hadn't started developing yet, had to share the locker room with senior football players, walking around with all of their hair and their giant church bell clapper swinging back-and-forth or dragging on the ground. Yet another of the humiliations in the name of American education.
But as an adult, I think grown ass men getting the vapors about nudity is wussy. Public pools, dojo's, the military, not to mention swimming naked when you're camping. For most guys, it takes about 10 minutes to realize how unimportant it is to spend time and energy trying to hide your dick. Go to a nudist place sometime, and within an hour he will realize that most of this "privacy" notion is bullshit.
Pernicious_Possum@reddit
I’d say over fifty. Spent A LOT of time at the beach in Hawaii and Virginia growing up in the 70’s and 80’s, and speedos were not really a thing. Shorts were fairly short, but not briefs short. America has very puritanical roots
Curmudgy@reddit
They were still being worn for competitive swimming back then. They weren't uncommon for lap swimming.

Whereas, if you go to a public pool in much of Europe, you'd get kicked out for wearing an American shorts-style bathing suit.
The logic is that its unhygenic to wear something that you may have been walking around all day in. A swimsuit is for swimming only, so speedos are mandatory.
ToastMate2000@reddit
How do they know someone wasn't wearing that skimpy suit as underwear beneath their street clothes and walking around in it all day before going to the pool? Or even multiple days?
R1200@reddit
I’ve been in Portugal over a month and swimming at the city pool. They require a Lycra swimsuit, either speedo type, square cut or jammers. You’re right, they have no way to know if youve worn it as underwear, but I doubt if many people do as everyone wants to swim in clean water. they also require showering before getting in the pool, there’s actually an automatic shower when you walk from the locker room to the pool that you can not escape. it includes a foot bath too. most people seem to shower with soap in the locker room first also.
cryptoengineer@reddit
You do what you can...
Obtuse-Angel@reddit
Thirty years ago was 1996, and speedos definitely weren’t popular for men in the US in the 90s. Or in the 80s. Maybe the 70s or earlier?
fieryuser@reddit
I think we went to very different beaches. ;)
PraetorianOfficial@reddit
I was around in the 70's. No, Speedos where a swim/dive team only thing. Trunks were short, for sure, with about a 2 inch inseam. But not the negative 2 inch inseam of a Speedo.
Shirts were less required than today. Having a tan was important, nobody knew about skin cancer and sunscreens pretty much stopped at SPF 4. In fact, in 1974 I went to a dermatologist for acne and his prescription was "do more sunbathing"... the sun will do for you what benzoil peroxide does (it was prescription only back then).
roskybosky@reddit
Not in the 70s. Men wore baggy jams or cutoffs on the beach. Speedos were foreign and ridiculous.
RemotePossibility399@reddit
I was in Jr high in the late 1970s early 1980s. The guys on the swim team and other young men wore speedos frequently both in competition and just to the pool. Once the '80s hit, they were essentially only seen during competition.
I don't ever recall them being in fashion for older guys or guys with bellies.
SignificantApricot69@reddit
I think the older guys with bellies might be a requirement for European Speedo wearers

SparkSignals@reddit
I too graduated in 03 and agree with your arithmetic.
GalenOfYore@reddit
Yes, it started in the 1970s in California and probably NYC, too. I wonder if any Chicagoans tested the waters. Presumably, several European visitors would have.
z44212@reddit
I wore a Speedo in the 90s, when I had the body for it.
If I wore one today, you wouldn't be able to see it.
cjf4@reddit
you definitely got made fun of for wearing a speedo in 1996.
ForbiddenButtStuff@reddit
There was a song called "Tangerine Speedo" that came out in 2000 with the line "no woman can resist a man who looks good in a speedo"
While that may be true, most men just don't look good in them
1Negative_Person@reddit
Caviar! They’re a Chicago band. I saw them back in… yeah probably around 2000.
1Negative_Person@reddit
Yeah, I guess that was a rounding error on my part. I would say ‘90 would have been the cut off where even older dude who hadn’t kept up with style would have stopped wearing them regularly.
gthomps83@reddit
I was definitely the only person who wore speedos in 1996 when not at a swim meet. My whole team wore them at swim meets though.
turdferguson3891@reddit
Yeah, other than people on the swim or water polo team I really never saw them back then.
JLRDZ@reddit
See you’re the problem but it’s okay. I’ll look at the bulges for you.
1Negative_Person@reddit
I said “most people”. I think if you exclusively surveyed people who like penises, most of them would prefer not to see the bulges of just whoever. They’d rather be selective about the dicks they see. Not seeing unexpected, unrequested, penis is a whole thing that people value.
I don’t doubt some people want to see dick. Most people do not. And even fewer people want to see every dick.
307148@reddit
It's just weird that we're ok with seeing women's cleavages but a man's bulge is a step too far. It's a double standard
TruckADuck42@reddit
I'll accept that its a double standard, but also everyone likes titties. Man, woman, gay, straight, doesn't really matter.
1Negative_Person@reddit
Breasts aren’t genitals.
And more importantly, no one is penetratively sexually assaulted with breasts.
ancientastronaut2@reddit
In some places in europe, they require speedos in public pools because they consider it more sanitary since they're only worn in the pool.
fllannell@reddit
There are still the occasional old men who go running in speedos, not at the beach. It's more than most people want to see, just being honest.
IReplyWithLebowski@reddit
Don’t see why not, we’re fine with seeing women’s bulges and curves
IPreferDiamonds@reddit
I'm 58. Speedos have never been popular for men in my lifetime.
bleueyedgirl89@reddit
Someone should tell my dad that. He’s 66, has a collection of speedos, and he does yard work in them in summer. Growing up in the 90’s and 00’s I was definitely embarrassed by it and bullied.
According-Couple2744@reddit
I’m 60 and the same. No one in my family nor any of my family ever wore them. My friend had a European boyfriend who wore them and she had to have a talk with him.
SignificantApricot69@reddit
If you have a bulge it shows just as much in board shorts, especially since it’s less contained and when any man gets out of the water the water generally makes your swimwear stick to you and around your body lines like cling wrap. The speedo mostly just doesn’t cover the legs from what I see and isolates the bulge but it doesn’t really make it more prominent for most.
Sledgehammer925@reddit
Speedos were laughed at in the 1970’s when I was at the beach daily. They were last worn somewhere in the 1950’s but even then there were slightly longer legs on them.
GalenOfYore@reddit
Where! 1950?
Curmudgy@reddit
They weren't common at beaches back then but they were still the norm for competitive swimming and even lap swimming.
Sledgehammer925@reddit
True
1Negative_Person@reddit
And the dudes that were wearing cargo shorts in the 2000s are the same ones that are wearing them in the 2020s and being perceived as unfashionable. That doesn’t mean no one is wearing cargo shorts. (They’re fucking useful, by the way!)
Sledgehammer925@reddit
With that many pockets they are really useful. Like a purse on your legs.
HeyPurityItsMeAgain@reddit
If you look like an Olympic diver nobody is going to complain...but most men don't.
rcowie@reddit
I had to wear one on the swim team back in middle school. I feel bad for anyone who had to see that, I was so fat.
Curmudgy@reddit
While that's a common joke, I don't belive it's true. Otherwise they wouldn't have noticed.
See, for example, this image from a 1960s beach movie. That's about when the form fitting swim trunks were falling out of favor. While the knit trunks, being thicker than speedos, didn't show the details, they did show the bulge. No one cared back then (except for Burt Ward's endowment, which embarrassed the sponsors of Batman).
Most people don't actually notice now, either. Or they'll notice a bulge in tight jeans just because it's uncommon. They just like to make fun of it.
unbalancedcheckbook@reddit
Yeah I went to high school in the 80s and they may have been slightly more common but generally only the swim team wore speedos. Maybe they were fashionable in the 70s IDK.
Attila226@reddit
Have you ever been surfing with speedos? There’s a reason why we have board shorts, not to mention rash guards.
1Negative_Person@reddit
I’ve never been surfing. I did dive in high school though. I would wear board shorts to the beach and pool, and wear my diving speedo underneath because board shorts don’t have a lining and sometime I just wanted the support.
Desert_Sox@reddit
I wore them for swim team back in high school (80's) - it was the team uniform.
When everyone's wearing them, you don't look out of place
But I don't have any now, and it's not the norm in the States
Not that I go to the beach that often anyways

cjbanning@reddit
It's also not incredibly for those of us who, ahem, lack a runner's physique to prefer not to go shirtless even in contexts where it would be socially acceptable. Whether that's more or less common than in other countries I do not know.
dm_me_kittens@reddit
All of this and regional. I grew up about 20 minutes from the beach, and most of the year businesses wouldn't blink an eye at a customer coming in shirtless or in their bathing suit. As long as youre not dripping water and are acting respectful, they don't care.
ancientastronaut2@reddit
My husband loves speedos for swimming. 😁
GalenOfYore@reddit
Speedos® flailed in the 1970s in SoCal, and were always more popular in places like Miami Beach, SFO, and Fire Island. I'm guessing anywhere that caters to European tourists has higher usage.

I dont like to show much skin so no, I won't be walking around with an open shirt or go to a beach in speedos. I also dont like the feeling of wearing speedos either.
t35martin@reddit
Have you seen most Americans? You don’t want them wearing speedos.
ShortBrownRegister@reddit
Yes.
I'm an American in Brazil. It took me about four months to work up the nerve to wear a zunga - Euro-cut swim briefs - to the beach. No one batted an eye, and I have a great tan!
In the grocery store, I saw a hairy Brazilian dude in a zunga, sans shoes and shirt, inspecting the produce. I'm still not quite ready for that.
capybarabjj@reddit
as a Brazilian in the USA, I laughed hard!
it's sunga, not zunga... and I wear mine here everywhere except the one time my company held a boat party, I did not want to be the center of attention.
I never felt bad or felt that people were paying attention to me, and btw I wore mine in Florida, Cali, Hawaii, Vegas and Texas
ShortBrownRegister@reddit
Do you have a great body? Would that make a difference about what you wear?
capybarabjj@reddit
Not great, I am more like a "under the radar": not fat, not skinny, average height, moderate body fat, you can notice I do some exercise, but you can also notice I drink a few beers

CuriousSiamese@reddit
A guy I know lived in the US for a year (we are both from Europe). And he had a joke that a lot of European guys would be called gay in America for how they dress/act. Can't tell you why, but there definitely is this heightened propensity to appear manly, or more so to not appear womanly/gay in the US.
Human_Ad_715@reddit
Yes. They wear baggy t shirts and cargo shorts that cover their knees. I prefer my husband in shorter shorts. Nothing too scandalous, just above the knee and less baggy. He worries the other men might judge him and call him gay. I don’t get it but it’s definitely a thing.
Tristawn@reddit
No, it doesn't relate to embarrassment. While some men could individually be embarrassed, it isn't the collective embarrassment of an entire continent of men that leads them to dress a particular way in a given social setting - it's culture.
Bagomostlywater@reddit
Men who wear kilts get sexually assaulted by women and have no one to complain to.
Cheeseisyellow92@reddit
In the southern US, where I live, you see lots of guys walking around shirtless during the warmer months, but when they go swimming, they usually wear swim trunks. But “skinny dipping” is a thing, or at least it used to be.
Majoz_@reddit
Yes cuz we’re FAT. Fit American men take off their shirts and wear short shorts and wife beaters all day long. Most of us are fat.
venturashe@reddit

Big_Act5424@reddit
Really, wearing revealing clothing like an open shirt is seen as very trashy or arrogant. It's usually reserved to the kind of people who'd put something in your drink or sell you something to put in someone's drink.
Just_curious4567@reddit
Lots of men go for a run shirtless. You are required to wear shirts to go into stores. A speedo on the other hand…. They really don’t look good on most men. Typically the only men that wear speedos here are gay men or foreigners. Also if you’re on a swim team, they will wear speedos.
Intelligent_Aerie276@reddit
It's a wider phenomena in most of the anglophone/protestant world. Canada, America, UK, Australia and New Zealand. Of course there's other anglophonic countries but I'm talking about the core and that's why I said "most"
Ok-commuter-4400@reddit
Shirts that expose a lot of the chest, short-shorts, and speedos are considered tacky, European, or gay. Straight American men rarely show off their bodies between shoulders and knees.
Tank tops are acceptable but considered very casual, and outside of the beach, often a marker of low class (we call ribbed tank tops “wife-beaters” for a reason).
Perfect_Storm_425@reddit
Those clothes are considered tacky in America, especially Speedos.

The thing that I hate about them is that most people that wear them look like they're trying to look muscular or something when they're not. When I lived in Denver I wore long sleeves mostly because the sun is evil AF there.

MrLongWalk@reddit

Sea_Pomegranate_4499@reddit
This. Many stores in the US let you know at the door that shirts are required for entry - that doesn't happen if people aren't walking in without shirts all the time. Americans are also infamous for their preference for shorts, whereas in most of Northern Europe this is considered attire for children or the beach. There really aren't many people in Scotland wearing kilts unless they are going to a wedding or playing the bagpipes at a scenic overlook.
Fantastic_Remote1385@reddit
Bullshit. I where shorts all the time, as long as the weather is warm enough. The same do "everyone" else.

some is embarrassment, but also sometimes is just a matter of respect. Because if other people do not want to see it, forcing them to see it is rather rude. Dazzling-Climate-318@reddit
Embarrassed, no, it would feel a bit out of time. I stopped wearing a speedo 50 years ago. Tank tops a bit earlier as they went out with the 70s as well. Once air conditioning started being more available in homes, cars and businesses tank tops and very short shorts as well as brief bathing suits became much less common.
VeronicaTwangler@reddit
It probably depends on what part of America. Where I am in coastal Florida, all of this is pretty normal. It's too hot for a lot of extra clothing.

Soeedos, tank tops, and revealing mens clothes are generally accepted but usually are associated with “gay culture” in the US. Most straight men avoid these wardrobes, but it’s not unheard of. It’s more trendy among younger Americans (not soeedos still).

spamella-anne@reddit
My conspiracy theory is that it ties back to the Aids crisis. Men wanted to avoid looking "gay" so men's fashion changed. Like look at fashion before the Aids crisis, men were wearing tiny little shorts & crop tops in the decades before. I could be wrong, but it just makes sense in my mind.
Ill-Veterinarian4208@reddit

not really, shorts were shorter in the 80s til michael jordan made wearing knee length ball shorts popular
Altruistic_Elk2077@reddit
I think it was the fab 5. Jordan wore shorty shorts for a while. I was too young to remember the transition but everything I've ever seen credit the fab 5, sort of like the precursor to Allen Iverson.
Swimming_Virus8990@reddit
it was jordan, idek who the fab 5 are
Altruistic_Elk2077@reddit
Respectfully, if you don't know who the Fab 5 are I have a hard time taking your historical claims as fact.
Fun fact, there's at least 7 Jalens in the NBA and one of the Fab 5, Jalen Rose is the first documented case of thag name (from what I've read)
sweet_hedgehog_23@reddit
The Fab Five were the 1991 Michigan basketball team. Jordan started wearing longer and baggier shorts than the short shorts of the 1980s, but Jordan wasn't wearing shorts as long or baggy as what the Fab Five were wearing in 1991. The Fab Five took the long shorts to the knee length and extra bagginess that they got to in the 1990s.
Healthy-Training-923@reddit

If you live in rural America, aren't gay, single and don't wish to be single, there is an Inherant incentive to not dress in a way that may cause others to think you are gay.

BigDamBeavers@reddit
Less embarrassed and more that it's not viewed as masculine in current fashion. American men do wear kilts, short-shorts, go topless, not a lot of speedos because they look kind of goofy. It's just not how men's fashions usually work in America.
We're also largely a cold weather country compared to Ukraine or Italy. There just isn't much of the year here where you can comfortably head out in a Speedo.
Cudi_buddy@reddit
I feel we get so judged for our clothing but usually the opposite. Just goes to show it’s a big country. I live in California. Sandals/flip flops, shorts, tank tops are incredibly common anywhere for half the year. The beach guys are commonly topless. Though no guy is wearing a speedo to the lake or River lol.
milliemargo@reddit
Not a man but an American. On the beach, no shirts or open shirts are normal.
It's not weird to wear a tank top in public, but they are typically reserved for undershirts. I suppose a tshrit-style with cutoff sleeves is much more common.
But you wouldn't go into a store or something with no shirt on. You'd get kicked out
I've never actually seen someone wear a speedo in real life. And I do not want to. Most Americans think thats gross I think
-Boston-Terrier-@reddit
I feel like this is actually becoming less normal with young people by me.
I commented a few times to my wife about how weird it was seeing so many guys with shirts on at the beach last summer. When I was a kid that was basically reserved for fat kids. I can't tell if it's just a health thing or what.
Divine_Entity_@reddit
I'm on the border of gen z & millennial, i would say the main reasons for shirts on the beach are: 1. Sunburn prevention (some shirts are explicitly UV blocking while being very light, and sunscreen washes off, even the stuff that isn't supposed to) 2. Temperature regulation (a light shirt can reflect more heat than it traps, and as the day cools off can be useful to keep you warmer) 3. Anxiety/self confidence issues, aka the fat kid trying to hide except we all are kinda messed up in the head.
Cudi_buddy@reddit
Sunburn for sure. Typically I start shirtless with sunscreen, but if we are out for more than a couple hours I usually don’t feel like putting sunscreen back on and cover up. Sunburn just ain’t worth it anymore.
hollylettuce@reddit
Well the ozone layer is getting thinner!
Could be a holdover from highschool perhaps? This would be regional, but whenever my school took us to an event that had swimming, they would tell us that in order to swim we had to wear shorts and T shirts over our bathing suits. Pissed a ton of us off, but I'm sure someone higher up complained and girls wearing too skimpy of bikinis or whatever. 🙄
-Boston-Terrier-@reddit
The ozone layer is not getting thinner, fyi.
anonymouse278@reddit
Putting babies and toddlers in long sleeved suits or rash guards in the sun is pretty much standard now (so much easier and more effective than trying to keep a toddler fully sunscreened all day), so wearing sleeves at the pool or beach is normalized for kids. They do tend to start wearing standard suits more often as they get older and more fashion-conscious, but it isn't out of the norm to keep wearing a rash guard indefinitely, and they come in cute styles and are much more practical and functional than swimming in a giant cotton t-shirt.
Mr_BillyB@reddit
I think it's mostly health. People realize that the sun is dangerous, and we now have clothing especially designed to be light and comfortable while protecting you from the sun. Its been a game changer for me.
Stan_Deviant@reddit
So you have never been to a swim meet? I wouldn't say most of us think it is gross, but if you are going to wear one you better be fit. We do the same for women in bikinis - there is a tipping point where society (no matter how good you do look) frowns on exposed skin.
shelwood46@reddit
For the most part, aside from athletes wearing them, I think most Americans associate them with middle-aged hairy slightly paunchy European male tourists.

Mediocre_Daikon6935@reddit
Of course.
While it is true a man’s reach should always exceed his grasp, there must be some fundamentally realistic assessment about social propriety & station in the world.
A gay man hitting on me, a hero sexual man with many children & an almost 2 decade marriage? Reach exceeding grasp. An attempt, bound to be unsuccessful no matter how flattering.
A European? So far beneath me, as an American, to be insulting. Frankly, revolting.

American men wear shorts, 7-9” (18-23 cm) inseams are the most common, but 5” (13 cm) inseams aren’t exactly rare. And you see plenty of people in sleeveless shirts when the weather is good. But most men seem to wear pants and a t shirt most of the time. I don’t think it’s an embarrassment issue at that point though. The only thing I think most American men would be embarrassed about is wearing something like a speedo/swim briefs.
Adventurous_Tea_6133@reddit
Here in Colorado I know people that never wear pants. Shorts 365 days a year! Personally I’m not gonna have bare legs when it’s below freezing! 🥶 🤷🏻♂️

America is where England's Puritans went when England - ENGLAND! - got too racy for them. A lot of Americans are in fact prudes. Yes - lots of guys would feel selfconscious.
RedditWidow@reddit
There are plenty of American men who wear less, especially at the beach, gym, doing yardwork, summer cookouts, partying and stuff like that. But it can depend a lot on the region and time of year. The west coast is a lot more informal than the east coast, and the South is a lot hotter year-round than the North, for example.
But as others have said, the things you mentioned are considered tacky by a lot of people. For example, tank tops are called "wife beaters," speedos are called "banana hammocks" and having an open shirt is associated with swingers or the 1970s decade with disco and gold chains.
cacamilis1@reddit
For Brazil, Spain, Italy and parts of America, the weather is scorching hot so naturally people are wearing less clothes… it’s normal in these places… I would think plenty of American men wear shorts and T-shirts the same way if they live in a warm climate
In the case of kilts, not really a “British” thing, they’re worn in Scotland and sometimes in Ireland as part of a cultural tradition - (not sure why they chose to do this as both are fairly cold countries)
Where are you from out of curiosity and what is normally worn in summer in your country?
Field-of-Schemes@reddit
Americans are Puritans. Plain and simple. So yes (and per the numerous comments, being the good Cristians they are, they also consider it gay for men).
Spend a year in Western Europe. Nudity is everywhere. Fountains. Museums (paintings and statues). Public statutory. Specific beaches and sections of the park (in Germany). It’s considered normal.
Asked my Dutch friend Maureen where the gay beach was (2001). She looked at me like I was crazy. “Everyone goes to the same beach. Bi, Gay, Straight (including families). It is irrelevant.”
Of course, she also had sex education in the 2nd grade (“Americans” clutch those pearls). Guess that’s why the US has all the sexual hang-ups and problems it does (teen pregnancy, sexual crimes, etc).
This statute was donated to and installed at the Community Theatre where I live. The public outcry was so great (OMG, what if the children see a nude male), it was removed within a very short period of time.
FlyingFlipPhone@reddit
Shirtless or open shirt are considered trashy (low class). Tight pants or short shorts are what you wear if you want to catch the eye of another man.
Reasonable-Company71@reddit
Depends on location. I'm in Hawaii and while speedos aren't a thing here; going shirtless/tank top/open shirt is perfectly acceptable here for the most part. Of course there's always going to be places/occasions (usually more formal) where it's frowned upon.
One_Recover_673@reddit

I tried a whole pants-less thing last summer. I told everyone it was "European". It didn't go over real well. And at the coffee shop, I kept knocking over everyone's cups. Sorry, Starbucks. In hindsight, yes, it was inappropriate.
Different_Cherry8326@reddit
Speedos are definitely not “cool” for men in the US, aside from very limited contexts like bodybuilding competitions. Could you wear one at a pool? Yes you could. But it would be considered weird.
And an open shirt is probably not appropriate for anywhere except beach, poolside, or on a boat. Definitely would turn heads in a negative way on a city street.
Even at swimming pools I feel it is becoming less acceptable for men to be shirtless than was 30 or 40 years ago when I was a kid. it’s still acceptable, but less common than it was before. Most men wear rash guard type shirts now.
Interesting_Bad_6226@reddit
We arent allowed to go into stores or gas stations without a shirt in most places. I think thats why in summer most people wear something. We have signs that say "no shoes, no shirt, no service"
OriginalCause@reddit
I see you've never been to a beach town. Sure, the signs are there, but if busineses within a few blocks of the beach stopped people coming in without shirts or shoes their sales would plummet.
tea-wallah@reddit
Right? Moved to Panama City FL in the 90s. Went the dmv and no one was wearing shoes.
ACK_TRON@reddit
I live in SWFL…beautiful beaches everywhere…maybe a select gas station but certainly not most, but you go in to any restaurant/drug store/shopping store anything you are getting asked to put clothes on, cover up over swim suit and certainly shoes. I mean we have beachfront restaurants everywhere and even the casual ones are not allowing that. Granted I may live in an older nicer area than other beach towns but that ain’t flying here. Nor do I want to explain to my daughter why that guy has lint stuck in his belly button or that girl is wearing dental floss as clothes.
OriginalCause@reddit
I grew up in New Smyrna and spent 3 months most years doing charters in the Keys. You must be in a pretty damn posh spot because that has definitely not been my experience.
And why is explaining bathing suits or belly lint to your daughter so difficult? Does she never go to these beautiful beaches your surrounded by?
ACK_TRON@reddit
We do live in a very nice area. We often visit the beach seeing it is just down the street (we can’t afford to live on it). The expectation at the beach is to see someone in a swimsuit of course. But most people put on a shirt to go into a store or restaurant around here. First off as a store and restaurant owner it’s a safety hazard and hygiene issue. second it makes your establishment feel much less orderly and casual. We aren’t talking you have to have shirt and tie everywhere…but not everyone wants to go into a place with smelly/sweaty shirtless beach goers. I get it. That said we often visit our local fish house restaurant right on the water after a day at the beach for lunch and in our beach attire but we are wearing coverups/shirts/shorts and sandals over our bikinis and bare tops. It’s common courtesy to those around us.
No I don’t explain those things to my daughter. I just tell her that is gross and inconsiderate to have 99% of your exposed butt/crotch on a seat that someone else will have to sit on or back hair sticking to the back of the booth requiring the bus boy to basically have to sanitize the whole booth when they leave.
Self-Comprehensive@reddit
Or a river town. Same thing. You can walk into a store still dripping wet in nothing but a bathing suit to grab beer and snacks. Restaurants and bars will usually have an outdoor patio for people in bathing suits but you have to be dry and dressed to go inside.

The basic problem is that Americans are hung up about sex. So yeah, between the original derivation of Puritans from England, a generally cold and wet place, and just the whole thing about pockets and politeness and decorum and business casual, we generally don't wear shorts unless it's exceptionally hot, and we generally wear sleeves in serious environments.

savguy6@reddit
Not so much embarrassed but we just have a different standard of what is acceptable.
My wife and I both like wearing more revealing swimwear when we’re at a friends private pool, on our boat, or when we travel: g-string or thong bikinis for her, speedos or “European” style swim shorts for me.
If we tried to wear that at our local beach, we’d get comments and stares. It’s just not worth the negative attention when we’re in a public place.
rottenindenmark37@reddit
Nah man, come out to Tybee with me. We'll wear our speedos together. Maybe I've gotten stares before, I haven't noticed, but there have been no comments.
savguy6@reddit
The problem also is we know too many people locally to be wearing that out and about. Last thing we need is to run into my elementary school teacher while wearing a swimsuit that does nothing to hide my bulge. 😆 That’s why we only wear those outfit on vacations or out on the boat. 😋
ValuableFickle5390@reddit
They wear no shirts all the time or those stupid cut shirts that aren’t even shirts. They use to wear pretty short shorts but then it turned into longer shorts and looser. It’s seeming the shorts are getting shorter and tighter. But in terms of crashing what is masculine and female clothing that is very embarrassing for them. Wear a kilt here is like wearing a skirt. If you wear a skirt as a man you must be gay and men can’t have that. They dress and act so people know they aren’t. It can actually pretty dangerous here to dress in that way. If you wore a kilt or tight shorts like they do in Dominica you would immediately be labeled and judged. Honestly even a man in a Speedo will get a lot of looks. It’s a shame that everyone is so insecure about what others think they limit themselves so much. Who gives a fuck

When I started running in my neighborhood, I was really uncomfortable with my shirt off, even at six in the morning when hardly anyone else was around. I don't feel bad about my body, but there's rarely a situation where it feels "right" to be revealing it in public. My guess is that it's much more common (thus, less taboo) in coastal towns. Of course, I wouldn't judge another man if he chose to wear revealing clothes in public, but I would certainly wonder "why?" unless it was obvious that he was exercising.
Mr_Kittlesworth@reddit
It’s just culturally different.
That sort of style is regarded, broadly, as being kind of absurd. We have sketch comedy characters dressed that way.

Europeans and Russians just blithely ignore it.
Infinite_Art_99@reddit
Nah, in large parts of Europe, nakedness just isn't inherently sexual, so you don't have to be "hot" to be allowed the comfort of nudity.
CompanyOther2608@reddit
I think it’s more like, to Americans, nakedness is inherently slightly offputting, so you need to reach a certain level of “not gross” in order to be able to pull it off. Maybe it’s because we’re so fat.
But even hot guys wearing short-shorts or unbuttoned shirts or tight pants seem ridiculous to us, so I don’t know.
Probably our Puritanical roots.
LaScoundrelle@reddit
I see women in thong bikinis at the beach all the time in the US, so I think there is a clear sexist double standard playing a role here.
CompanyOther2608@reddit
Totally. But maybe there’s a self-awareness thing going on. Like, women typically won’t bear tons of skin unless we’ve legitimately believe we can pull it off. Men outside of the USA seem to believe that tight pants and unbuttoned shirts are sexy even if they’re objectively not fit. It makes them seem really not self-aware, to put it kindly.
LaScoundrelle@reddit
Attractiveness isn’t really an objective thing, though. Like the idea it’s normal to objectify female bodies but not male bodies is pretty distinctly cultural.
CompanyOther2608@reddit
What’s a culture in which that’s not the norm? Genuinely curious ‘cause I’ll move there!
LaScoundrelle@reddit
I mean these European cultures where men wear tighter fitting clothing would probably count, relatively speaking. Yet here you are insulting them, which I find confusing since one comment later you claim you’d like this.
CompanyOther2608@reddit
Oh, so you mean they objectify BOTH. Yeah, that seems even worse.
I thought you meant that there’s a place on the planet where women aren’t objectified.
LaScoundrelle@reddit
Oh. No, that’s not really what I meant. Although in parts of rural Afghanistan men supposedly prefer objectifying other men to objectifying women. Also in Ancient Greece and Rome men’s bodies were considered more universally attractive. These were also societies where women didn’t have many rights though, so not sure it’s what you’re looking for.
Infinite_Art_99@reddit
I think the nakedness=sexual connection is what's ruining it for you, bc puritanical roots.

Going shirtless isn't considered embarrassing or out of place for any men at places like beaches, pools, and lakes. (Outdoor spaces where people typically wear less clothes.)

I think a lot of hetero, middle and working class American men are very shy about their bodies. Forget about speedos, but I know people who think swim trunks that end a few inches above the knee are embarrassingly revealing. They aren't even some sort of evangelical religious people too!
An anecdote about when I realized MANY American guys are scared of their bodies:
Vinny G, I hope I am at least half as full of life in my senior years. He has since passed on after a long and colorful life; but a friend of my father would wear speedos at the pool at their yacht club; and it would absolutely scandalize people. He was a combat veteran of the Second World War and was on one of the aircraft carriers when it was struck by kamikazes, but insisted he wasn't a hero. He'd make his own wine, worked out and kept as low of a body fat index as a man in his 70s-90s could, was tanned, had a younger (read 50 y.o.) girlfriend, drove a convertible, and would wear rockabilly shirts like the protagonist from Trailer Park Boys. It will live in my memory for the rest of my life Old Vinny standing poolside in a speedo chastising his overweight, pale, peers in their baggy dad-trunk swimsuits. He said something about when he visited cousins in Europe, people wanted to show off their bodies. Girls were topless at the beach, men were in speedos, nothing bad happened and they had a great time flirting. Here his friends were blushing and snickering on one hand, but being absolutely mystified how he had girlfriends later in life when they hadn't been laid in years. All of these middle aged and older men were like shy schoolboys with the one confident cool kid. I was in my early teenage years, and it was the first time that I really understood that you didn't have to be scared of showing your body and use clothing as something that hid you, and that the shyness was really a cultural thing.

Wouldn't say its embarrassment just culture differences. I know in the us its always easy to pic Europeans and Canadians out at the beach if there in speedos there 99% not gonna be from the US.

Depends… obviously the fitter you are, the less embarrassed we feel, but it highly depends on the context/ event. If you do it around kids, it’ll cause an uproar no matter who you are. If you do it a party, it’s cool, just don’t embarrass yourself by thinking you’re prettier than you are.

I think there's a few different reasons. There's a lot of pressure to "be able to pull it off" or have the ideal body type. People get really upset if they see a larger or hairier body in revealing clothing. Revealing men's clothes are also associated with gay culture. There's an assumption that women are "not visually stimulated," so a man wearing revealing clothes must be trying to attract another man.
As always with the US, don't overlook the conservative Christians and the modesty movement.
Cinisajoy2@reddit
No, because red as in sunburn red is not a good skin color.
Hairy_Debate6448@reddit
Interesting framing we’re using here but I’ll bite. I’m not sure it’s “embarrassment” so much as just a cultural difference. I mean in most cultures/religions women don’t really have strict rules what they have to wear and stuff like that but for Islamic people, it’s different. I don’t believe that this suggests that the women are too “embarassed” to show their faces/bodies, just that their culture views clothing/modesty differently than most other cultures.
I mean people wear speedos here and it’s not like people are weirded out by it but it is received differently bc most people don’t wear them. Just like if I see a guy wearing denim capris at a popular tourist spot in the U.S, I’m not weirded out by it but i instantly think, European. You definitely see tank tops and open shirts here, maybe not as much and probably more situationally (to the beach, on vacation, to the gym, etc.) but that’s not unusual. You see open shoes (sandals, slides) in the same kind of situations. Similarly, you’ll see guys running without shirts when it’s hot out or just walking around if you’re by the beach.

Huge variability, but I think in general it's about whether it's appropriate for the situation. Work attire is generally fairly modest, club and beach attire is not.
Plenty of shyness exists too. Like Speedos are perfectly appropriate for the beach so nobody is going to be offended, but most men don't want to wear them.
Ok-Entertainment5045@reddit
American women generally do not like American men to wear speedos. Therefore we don’t wear speedos.
MrMathamagician@reddit
There is a high degree of male social enforcement around men not bringing attention to themselves within the US white male culture. It is considered looking ‘desperate’ and the wolf pack will attack you mercilessly. This is endemic Germanic culture which the vast majority of US white population descend from (English, German, Dutch, Scandinavian). One thing to point out from your comment: “some British men wear kilts that reveal their legs” this is from Scottish culture not English so does not apply to the group I identified above.

Generally yes but it tends to fixate on the upper thighs and pelvic region specifically. shorts that are long enough are considered fine. and most men arent too bothered about being shirtless even if it is required that we wear shirts in most establishments. Ive usually always felt a bit uncomfortable being shirtless but im a slightly over modest outlier.
CuriouslyFlavored@reddit
Speedos aren't a common thing, if you see one at the beach, it's probably a European or South American guy. An open shirt/bare chested on the street isn't common, but there is no embarrassment factor.
Everything else you mentioned is completely common and normal.

These thighs aren’t meant for public consumption and my generation fought hard to relegate skimpy men’s attire to the dustbin of history, only for younger millennials and Gen Z to bring it back.
Vast-Jello-7972@reddit
It’s toxic masculinity. In American culture it’s “masculine” to be the person who does the looking, and feminine to “be looked at.” Dressing in a revealing way is considered to be performing a passively sexual role and it breaks a gender norm. It’s considered to be emasculating.

It's less about embarrassment and more about context. Going shirtless is fine at the beach or pool, but walking into a gas station like that would get you side eyed. We just have a weird set of unspoken rules about when it's acceptable. Speedos will always be a joke here though.

This isn’t true for everyone, but a lot of us American guys are insecure about our bodies. Some of it comes from the fact that lots of us are fat, and some of it is a remnant of homophobia.
I’m 42, so I grew up in the 90s, when if you presented yourself in any way that deviated from the norm, your buddies would call you the f-slur. Most of us have moved past that mindset, but when it comes to how we dress, we haven’t.
voteblue18@reddit
I think we think speedos are more goofy that’s what makes them embarrassing not the exposure. They are just silly looking to us.
stratusmonkey@reddit
I agree that there are relatively few places where men are allowed to be less covered than a t-shirt and shorts.
But even in spaces where shirtlessness is allowed, there's a lot of totally heterosexual body image judgment about who is allowed to be seen. And if you aren't jacked and waxed like the Gigachad meme guy, you better put a bag over yourself. Because guys who definitely aren't gay will scowl at you for making the gym / beach / Walmart ugly with your fat and hairy situation.
rufireproof3d@reddit
I'm not embarrassed, but I should be. I recognize that no one wants to see me in revealing clothing.
I once gave my boss a panic attack. We were having a Halloween costume contest at work. Boss asked what my costume was going to be [another overweight older man] and I are going to go as Nudists!" Boss man went white as a ghost, looked down at the floor, refusing to make eye contact, and said in the most desperate voice I have ever heard another human being use, said "Please don't."
Saltpork545@reddit
My answer is no, we just do it differently.
Instead of stuff like speedos we wear stuff like basketball shorts more casually.
I'm sure there's lots of men in this chat who have slipped on flip flops, in their gym/basketball shorts, threw on a shirt of some kind and went to the gas station or hardware store or picking up food or whatnot.
The US does something called athleisure where exercise clothing becomes normal day to day wear out and about and you will absolutely see dudes in their cut up muscle shirts in public. You will also see men with their pants sagging and their underwear covered asses out.
Most of the styles you mentioned OP are simply not in fashion here. It's why you don't see them.
FoxRavencroft@reddit
Baggier the better. I feel more comfortable in super large baggy clothing than anything that would be considered revealing... but I did grow up in the 90's so take that as you will.

Depend on where in America. In the south, shirtless men are everywhere, in Florida, it is not uncommon to see shirtless ppl or even whole families in bikinis going into a gas station or just out and about. Men wearing their shirts unbuttoned down to their sternum was a big thing in the 70's disco era, and has also been associated with mafioso types.
Now they typically either wear a shirt normally (mostly buttoned except the top one or two), or go shirtless if at the beach or working out or something like that.
Crop tops for men are typically associated with gay or culture.
Carl_Schmitt@reddit
I go to nude beaches without any embarassment, so that's not the issue. We just have different social expectations for different places and times just like every other culture. The wide open shirt/gold chain thing is considered lower class and tacky most of the time. Speedos are also considered bad taste.
Leverkaas2516@reddit
Look at any photo of an American beach. Quite obviously most of the men aren't embarrassed about revealing their legs below the thigh or their body above the waist.
What most American men don't do is look for an excuse to show skin purely for the purpose of showing skin. A Speedo in America is a racing suit. If you aren't racing, there's no reason to wear one.
I will say, as a fat man, that embarrassment CAN be a part of clothing choices. I no longer go shirtless even at the beach, because I don't like to reveal how fat I am. I avoid wearing shorts and no shoes because I have very visible varicose veins. But all this only became an issue after 40.
yeeting_my_meat69@reddit
Shorter inseams, athletic fit, and “athleisure wear” are huge with the millennial and Gen Z crowd. Going shirtless is generally frowned upon and most businesses will kick you out. Tank tops and other sleeveless is pretty popular for at home, gym, or very casual outings.
I don’t think it’s about feeling embarrassed. I think it’s a carryover effect from the relatively puritanical societal standards that have always existed in the US.
A-Moron-Explains@reddit
Just culturally different. If I see a guy in a Speedo on the beach I immediately assume he is either European or gay and being intentionally provocative. I find most men in the US that dress skimpily are homosexual men intentionally challenging gender norms.

A large factor in the US is the weather. A large portion of the west is dry year round and does not have the same levels of humidity as S. America, Asia, etc. While it can get extremely hot, it is not the same level of air moisture like the east coast of the US. Think desert like hot where covering up may actually keep you cooler than going bare.
SignificantApricot69@reddit
I’d say yes. And I don’t know if I’m allowed to even talk about this here because some people will definitely have a problem with it, but I’m in a group here called “BD” problems. And this isn’t just an American thing, but in addition to the people who have problems with things like open shirts, short shorts, chest hair, etc.
I think Americans in particular don’t understand male anatomy to the point many of us who even wear very modest clothing will be accused of being “perverts” or something if we don’t go out of our way to wear special underwear, clothing of certain colors etc. Kinda wild to me since when I was growing up in the ‘80s you would see dudes wearing tight jeans on family network tv with their junk outlines and of course most rock stars wore skin tight jeans and leather pants or whatever, even if they weren’t rocking the Robert Plant look.
Also considering shorter short inseams are in and stuff like that now. I have to wear cool clothing to work and while I haven’t had too many problems I get comments and looks when I wear like 7-9 inch athletic shorts with boxer briefs underneath, cut off shirts (I work at an athletic labor job which requires standing and moving a full shift and it’s usually around 85 degrees year round but sometimes hotter). I get comments about “showing the guns off” “I need to put away my chest hair (if I wear a modest V neck or shirt with 2 buttons undone which always seemed to be normal/modest to me) and also comments about bulging while fully flaccid while wearing modest shorts with underwear.
Stock-Airport3880@reddit
I don't wear speedos but I do have European swim trunks from Decathlon that are on the smaller side compared to what a lot of American men wear at the beach. I would never wear a speedo though.
In day to day life a man dressing too revealing is just considered trashy. I would wear an open shirt with an A-shirt underneath if it was hot but i wouldn't wear just an A-shirt or no shirt unless I was playing basketball or soccer or something, or it was seriously hot outside.
I'm slim and attractive and tatted i have no problem with other people seeing my body. It's just considered unrefined here.

American culture was heavily influenced by puritan settlers. Those cultural attitudes were reinforced by generations of strict protestant immigrants. Those roots run deep in American culture and influence many aspects, including attitudes about wear and attire.
Lexie_Acquara@reddit
I recognize that what I’m about to say is cultural and has to do with fashion of any given time. But I don’t think it has to do with being embarrassed by the body or being modest, it’s because a lot of the stuff you mention is thought of as skeevy, vain, and low class. I remember American men wearing speedos and open shirts, midriff shirts and things like short cuttoff jeans and no shirt in the 70s and early 80s. It was in fashion until it wasn’t. Stuff like that got made fun of and kind of became associated with porn stars and low life creepers. You still see it in movies today. if they want to signal a guy is unsafe, gross, and just about to sexually harass you, he will have a shirt open to the naval and lots of tacky gold jewelry. if at the pool, he will be the one in the Speedo. It’s just become sort of a signaller of a sort of low life guy. Men who don’t want to put out that vibe don’t dress like that.
TheKiddIncident@reddit
I think "embarrassed" is the wrong word. Wearing a shirt unbuttoned to your navel is considered low class and most American men wear our shirts buttoned up. Think style rather than modesty.
If we are at the beach or a pool, then sure. No need to wear a shirt. Even at the gym or on a bike ride you'll see guys with no shirt at all. Not a big deal.
Of course, shorts are also very common here in the states so I think that's also incorrect.

Having grown up in the US, I’d say the person who mentioned gay culture had a point. Some time in the 80s, straight American men decided that trying to look sexy, or even stylish, was gay. No_Patience_6801@reddit
This is where the saying “there’s a fine line between being gay and European” comes from in the US. Because most men here don’t dress in tight fashions or speedos, etc. The ones who don’t dress like this think that it makes them appear more gay if they are heterosexual. Don’t shoot the messenger- I’m not saying I agree with this. Just laying out my observations.
EgoSenatus@reddit
It depends on where you are and what you’re talking about.
There are American men that wear revealing clothing. If you’re someplace warm like Florida or California, the likelihood of seeing a man’s torso, legs, and upper arms goes way up, cause clothing is hot. On the other hand, in some states, it’s below 60 degrees Fahrenheit half the year and you wear clothing to stay warm.
And then there’s the whole modesty thing- Americans tend to hold more of a “just because you like something, doesn’t mean everyone does” mentality, particularly when it comes to exposing skin. You and your partner may find your exposed torso sexy, but other people at the grocery store might not. Not everyone is interested in seeing your junk cradled by a banana hammock speedo. It’s a general consensus of “be respectful of what you think other people would wanna see.” It is why we wear stylized clothes instead of tunics after all.

I think in the US, revealing clothes on men is seen as trying to hard, a bit narcissistic, and it's largely associated with immature club fuck-boys.
The unspoken message that's frequently being received in these circumstances, fairly or not, is that all this person has to offer is their physical appearance.
TEG24601@reddit
Part of the puritan heritage of the United States is modesty. Many of our health codes prevent shirtless activities in businesses, "No Shirt, no Shoes, No Service", is common in many communities for that reason, and many businesses consider open shirts to be shirtless. Shirtless activities, or even open shirts, are much more common near beach areas, as that is where it is deep acceptable, and a lot of the country doesn't have beaches, nor the weather in the summer, to make that possible.
There are also far more people who are too skinny or fat to feel comfortable going shirtless or open shirt, as they still have the scars from PE in high school.

In general, Americans have a very conservative attitude when it comes to clothing, at least in the southern U.S. Christianity has a super-big following in the southern states, and I know for a fact that spirituality is a big factor in how people choose to dress. I'm not very spiritual myself, and even I'm influenced by that attitude: if you meet me in real life, the most skin you'll ever see me showing is my forearms, and that's because it gets too hot to wear long sleeves during the summer down here.

Most heterosexual men in the US are deathly afraid of anything that might make them look "gay". The way they dress, walk, sit, stand is all impacted. They won't show emotion, except for anger. The activities they do and don't do are also impacted. For example, they won't dance, though this is the absolute best way to get a woman to want to have sex with them.
But then, watch them play any sport ... and they can't stop groping each other. It is very odd.
Not saying that American men should all be wearing speedos, but the "bathing suits" that are as long as pedal pushers and/or capri pants...but baggy? Seriously?

Have you been to America?

ExultantGitana@reddit
Some styles in the US that you don't see being worn or used as often is yes, sometimes about modesty, but in many cases, as each country has its own styles and flair, we (both men and women in many cases) may merely think it's ugly, tacky, not stylish, off putting.
Some of the styles you talk about, to the US mind, has particular connotations and your typical man, with a partner, may not want to walk out in body covering that yells out, for example: gigolo, player, cheater, desperate, tacky.
It's simply cultural, whether be it a modesty or a style matter.
SnooChipmunks2079@reddit
I don’t think most men worry about wearing shorts, but it’s generally either young guys who look good or old guys who don’t gaf any more shirtless or open shirt.
ReasonsToTakeMore@reddit
Not embarrassed per se it's viewed as being feminine or for the queer community similar to how American men don't wear as much jewelry or wear "man bags" because to us purses are for women
itdoes_doesntit@reddit
Speedos were a big deal in the 70s. All the guys on our swim team pic are wearing them.
In the 80s it became “board shorts” for swimming about the same time professional basketball players uniforms changed to longer shorts too.
Fejj1997@reddit
No, I just generally don't prefer them. I often wear a muscle shirt in the summer but I wear exclusively long pants unless I'm at the gym. Flannels and button-ups I usually just leave the top button undone, maybe one more if it's hot out.
Funnily enough, when I lived in Germany and got away from the "Rural" aesthetic I wore my shirts a little more open and shorts around town. Maybe it's just a culture thing.
GSilky@reddit
Time and place. Our Puritan heritage pops up in strange ways. There are also other reasons. I live out west and lead a life where I choose to wear denim pants most days, even in the high summer, because I very well may be waist deep in brush before the day is over, and shorts aren't helpful. I also ride motorcycles and do other things that leg protection is handy for. This used to be very common for American men, and the ready for work look seeped into the American ideal of masculinity. Don't get me wrong, my Jewish anxiety also makes me feel uncomfortable with showing off my legs at inappropriate times, so I point back to the Puritan heritage.
Secure-Ad8196@reddit
In America people go by appropriate context so like if your at the beach yes their gonna be shirtless, being shirtless in public places (restaurants and such) is seen as rude and disrespectful. And then the whole speedo thing I think maybe people view that as attention seeking. But it’s based on where you are there are not a lot of places being shirtless would be appropriate. Only places I could think of is beach, running, and gym (even then being shirtless in the gym is a bit out of the norm). However more south of America you see a lot more guys in tank tops and slippers obviously cause it’s hotter
nakedonmygoat@reddit
I've never been a member of a gym that allowed men to be shirtless except for swim activities.
HammerDown125@reddit
God gave me these legs for a reason. It would be disrespectful to not show them off.

My husband definitely does. He feels like an open shirt can be an attention grab, and that a speedo is emasculating for example.

I think it depends on the person?
I know plenty of guys who wear tank tops, and shorts that I think are far too short.
I, on the other hand, never wear shorts, or tank tops. I like Jeans and T-shirts.
Like everything, it's probably location dependent, religious based, and comfort based.
ACK_TRON@reddit
In general America is just much much more socially conservative. Reddit is not a good place to measure this but we are primarily a country with judeo-Christian values (many people early on came here to escape religious persecution). Reddit users will downvote this but if you go through large swaths of the US even if people aren’t going to church every Sunday they still were largely brought up or influenced by those religious values and as such modesty is very normalized. I am far from the purity police but I don’t think it is such a bad thing. Personally I think a little mystery is super sexy. I’m much more attracted to a lady that is very femininely dressed but even mostly covered than someone that has it all hanging out. To me there is nothing left to find out and I like those blind box mystery surprises the kids open. That’s how I like my women and let me tell you….the first time some girl pops out two big ol pillows you didn’t know was there or a get an perfect bite of apple she was hiding…oh man that’s a glorious thing!!!
SouthCotton1979@reddit
From me personally I rarely go out in public without pants or a shirt on. I normally wear clothes that cover well
Now in an outdoor swimming pool no issues swimming shirtless and wearing swim shorts. At my indoor rec center where I swim laps I were swim brief. I just feel speedos are a little uncomfortable and show too much. That’s just me
At my house I do occasionally sit out in the sun shirtless or a tank top. I do occasionally go for walks in the park in a tank top

People wear tank tops or go shirtless all the time. The other things you mentioned don’t get worn by men in America because there is a stigma that those items of clothing are gay.
PrimaryHighlight5617@reddit
There is an undertone for men dressing "sexy" or revealing like that. People think, "who are you trying to impress? certainly not women. Are you trying to look good for other men?"
jguerrer@reddit
There really isn't a "pretty, but straight" version of masculinity in America the way there is in Italy, Spain, or Mexico. Any man who dressed like a European man would just be assumed to be homosexual in the US unless they are clearly foreign (IE: Mexican nationals get a pass).
workswithpipe@reddit
Not embarrassing but boardshorts are significantly more comfortable . Tank tops are fine but don’t really have a lot of opportunity to wear them so I only have 2 or 3. Don’t wear a lot of shirts with buttons because I am lazy.
Ok-Awareness-4401@reddit
I have worn board shorts my whole life, but I have also worn speedos. Board shorts have given me ball chafe so bad I was walking like a cowboy, not just once dozens of times.Speedos have never done that. I also know that isn't just a me thing, I watched dozens of my male colleagues at ocean rescue make the transition for when we were doing workouts where we went from swimming to running. They even make board shorts with spandex liners because of this issue. You are "comfortable" because you fit in in board shorts.
Derwin0@reddit
I’ve always cut the mess liner out of my board shorts in order to avoid that.
Ok-Awareness-4401@reddit
Not that mesh liner. Board shorts, don't have liners, board shorts (imply bathing suits targeted to be worn while riding a surfboard) are not lined and never have been, these are in the vein of Birdwell's, Katin etc. Your standard bathing suit does have that shitty mesh liner, those are not board shorts. The spandex liner I am referring to, is like a compression shorts. an example
Surfers spend an inordinate amount of time wet shifting positions and moving in bathsuits compared to the average american. There have been multiple years where friends and I have been in the ocean over 180 days a year, each of those days is probably an average of 2-3hrs. We are going to note problems way sooner than your average person who is hopping in the pool, going off the diving board a couple times or maybe a few games of Marco Polo.

Typically, a midwestern guy puts on work clothes and works 10 hours of labor. He then stops off at the local bar gets a cheeseburger and fries and drinks a couple beers. He then goes home and does it all again tomorrow.
He is generally considered cool as fuck. That is the standard most people are running against and a lot of people who do not live that life try to project that image. So guys wear work clothes to look like the guy who is cool as fuck.

American here. I used to work with a lot of Eastern Europeans and they found our modesty, especially for men, obvious and interesting. We had a lot of convos at lunch about why men in the us just didn’t wear a speedo to the beach, why going topless for women was so taboo, and why we didn’t talk with our kids about sex in a positive and open way. They were 💯 “everyone’s got a body and they are all great”. I wish Americans were more like that. So yeah, we are fairly culturally repressed regarding the human body. I don’t know why, but we are.

I don't know about embarrassed, but we do have a different standard of dress. Our social dress codes are a lot more puritan- meaning, you should generally be covered up if you are not actively doing something that requires less dress (swimming, exercising, manual labor in hot weather, etc). When in doubt, we err on being more covered than less (swim trunks vs. speedos, pants vs. shorts, closed vs. open shirts).

There are a lot of subcultures that define norms and mores for men in the USA.
College town in the South? Guys are shirtless and wearing the shortest shorts you can buy from an American company.
I still have some running shorts from the Marines that are shorter than some of my boxer briefs.
Hipster neighborhood when it's warm? Definitely some tattooed guy walking around with his shirt unbuttoned
Drunk in Florida? All bets are off.
DDrewit@reddit

Slight_Manufacturer6@reddit

Bluemonogi@reddit
I have seen many American guys wearing shorts and going shirtless at a pool, beach, at home or wearing tank tops in hot weather. Some guys were shorts in colder weather. They aren’t going shirtless in stores or restaurants. They might not wear an open shirt as that is not in style or very skimpy tight bottoms.
NastyNate4@reddit
Embarrassed is not really the right word. These things are outside of cultural norms. Growing up in the 90s I remember hearing often that shorts above the knee are gay. It’s weird because older photos of men in the 70s and 80s seems shorts were way shorter then. I think it’s relaxed a bit now but anything too revealing or form fitting is still considered that way. If i showed up in 5” shorts and a tank top it’s going to be looked as weird by a lot of people. I have a few pair of swim shorts that my wife says people will either think i’m gay or european. Also probably don’t help that we as a nation became incredibly fat in the 90s
1Negative_Person@reddit
American men wear short pants all of the time. Many American men go entirely shirtless in public during the summer months, though it’s considered rude and unhygienic in many settings, so stores and restaurants tend to ban people without shirts.
But, largely, no, American men are not shy about showing skin.
HammerOvGrendel@reddit
There's an American satirical cartoon from the 60s that does the rounds on social media pretty frequently along the lines of "THIS will be Men's fashion in the future", and it's a guy wearing shorts, a vest, boots and an indeterminate "cowboy hat" while other men in 3-piece suits look shocked. The comments are always "Welcome to Australia" .
In the other english-speaking parts of the world that are actually warm climates - Australia, NZ and South Africa among others, that's a "rugged outdoorsman, salt of the earth" coded outfit rather than "male stripper" one. Same goes for Speedos - In Australia Swimming is a compulsory lesson/sport at school, we win lots of medals for it at the Olympics, and that super-tanned guy in his little speedo who drags you out of the ocean if you start drowning or get bitten by a shark/crocodile is a national icon of manliness.
My point being: even among nations who speak the same language and are only a couple of hundred years removed from each other, the environment generates a lot of the culture about the clothed body. Southern California would be different about that to Minnesota no doubt.

I don't feel embarrassed, I just think that it looks bad. When I buy any item of clothing my first thought is "Will this be comfortable to wear". If it's not, I don't buy it. And for first the whole European skin tight "form fitting" style is not comfortable. If I wanted to wear wetsuit I'd go scuba diving.
rowsoflark@reddit
Speedos do seem a but much as over the knees board shorts seem a bit too modest. Funny thing is you see pictures of each others fathers from the 1980s and they're playing driveway basketball in cut off crop tops and super high shorts.
Derwin0@reddit
It was around the early 90’s that trends shifted from shorter shorts to longer board shorts.
Which sucks as I preferred my swim trucks being shorter as opposed to going all the way to my knees, but it’s near impossible to find the shorter one’s anymore.

cautiously-curious65@reddit
I’m an American that wears speedos all the time.
As a gay dude, I’m comfortable wearing literally nothing around most people and environments. I get uncomfortable about the idea of wearing nothing in front of minors, and I’m aware that nudity doesn’t inherently mean sex or intent… but that’s my hang up..there’s lots of cultures that don’t make that assumption, and I don’t even want to get there.
But the USA has a lot of hang ups around male modesty.. a Speedo at a beach or pool for lay people nearly immediately others you. As a tourist or as gay. And you need to be comfortable as being perceived as one of those things.
I need to ask myself if it’s an appropriate place where being gay is okay.. all the time. And for my whole life. I’m 34, and “passing” and from New York.
I once wore a speedo as underwear and flew from California to New York and had to have an extra search at security..because the fabric was thicker than underwear.
It’s regularly 40C/103f for months in some regions, and we’ve yet to get comfortable with seeing people sweat…there’s a lot of hang ups about dumb shit. Very low level shit. And here we are (Americans) for judging people in speedos. It’s absolutely insane.
I support none of this dumb shit America in general does. Speedo style swim suits feel better. But a lot of the USA isnt even comfortable wearing briefs underwear that you can’t even see and makes a lot of assumptions on that..
We’re at the point of seeing people sweat is viewed as unprofessional or gross… it’s insane.

Speedos are generally associated with gay men, water sport athletes, and Europeans. It’s not common pool or beachwear.
Open shirts or being shirtless isn’t necessarily uncommon or taboo. You just can’t enter the overwhelming majority of businesses without being fully clothed. But if you’re at the park, beach, at home, on a run, or for some blue collar workers - when working, it’s pretty normal.
Tank tops are normal. At least where I’m from. American men’s fashion generally is just more conservative.
Great_Chipmunk4357@reddit
American men wear shorts and t-shirts or sleeveless shirts all the time. How much more do you want them to reveal? Wearing skin-tight and revealing clothes is considered somewhat effeminate.
Derwin0@reddit
Not really. Go to the beach and you’ll see plenty of shirtless men, we just prefer not to have skin cancer by going shirtless all the time (as well as the whole “no shirt, no service” when going into a store/diner).

I fish very often and I used to wear as little as possible. In the dead of summer I'd be shirtless. I used to be very tan by the end of June.

Tank tops on men are pretty well accepted in the USA as very casual attire. Going shirtless is too in the right situation, exercising outdoors in a hot day for example.
Shorts any shorter than just above the knee and women think they are weird and those same asshole men that yell rude comments at women will do the same to you. It’s a shame because my quads are amazing and I would love for shorter shorts to be more socially acceptable.
SrMinkletoes@reddit
I grew up in the southern US, during the summer I'm likely to wear loose shorts and a tank top anytime I'm going to be outside casually just due to the heat and humidity. I currently live in the northern US and similarly dress for the weather. It's almost April and it is below freezing temps this morning. We will have some nice weeks in the summer up here but right now I'm still wearing a couple layers of warmer clothing
There isn't a straightforward answer to your question, the US is a very large country, with just about every type of weather conditions imaginable across it's different regions. As far as the speedo example it's just not the style, especially compared to a lot of European countries Americans are generally more prudish. Like haha I can see your whole dick and balls outlined in your choice of swimwear dude, that's weird there are children here.
Bread-Stick1@reddit
I mean American men wear shorts all summer, that's about the same as a kilt. We also wear tank tops and sleeveless shirts pretty commonly, especially if doing something active.
Speedos I don't think will ever be an American thing lol, we view them as very unattractive and cringe? Creepy? Gross? Pedo? And wearing a button up shirt unbuttoned so you are showing off your chest and stomach is a look most Americans find funny and what we would call "trashy" or "redneck", kind of a sleazy vibe.
Ok-Awareness-4401@reddit
Shirtless no, speedos culturally yes. They might dress it up as some other reason, but it boils down to fitting in and feeling comfortable in their bodies.
OceanLemur@reddit
In high school I did a school trip to Europe, but in Germany we each got dropped off with a host family. Mine took me to a community pool where the women were topless and the dudes all had speedos, while my American ass is wearing a bathing suit that reaches my shins, a t-shirt and a Yankees hat. I was worried I was going to have to be basically naked like everyone else. So, yes, very uncomfortable experience.
rdubmu@reddit
Yeah we are fat
trae_curieux@reddit
It's just a cultural difference. Going shirtless at the pool or beach is totally normal for males but isn't common in other venues.
Swim briefs (aka "Speedos") aren't normally worn for just lounging by or wading into a pool or the beach, here, but aren't technically illegal or anything: you'd probably just get some funny looks. They are, however, okay to wear for swimming laps at an actual lap pool. For example, when I swim laps at the gym, I'll wear jammers (same spandex material, but goes to the knee), but if I were to go to the beach or even a pool that's more for wading and not actual swimming, I'd wear swim trunks (also go to the knee, but baggier than jammers).
Atlas7993@reddit
It depends on location and subculture. If you live somewhere warm it's probably more common. Showing skin is more commonly seen as feminine, so you might be perceived as femme or gay (and I can speak for the gay thing - gay guys tend to give a few shits less about that if they are out/live in an environment where they feel safe to be gay); especially in more rural areas where a shirt and jeans are pretty much the norm for men and women alike. Like some people have said, you have to wear a shirt, shoes/sandals, and at least shorts to get into most public places, so not having one of those makes life pretty inconvenient unless you're at home. Even when you're at home, though, in some places people will scoff/have a negative opinion of you for being shirtless and in people's line of sight.
Living_Fig_6386@reddit
I don’t care. I’m nothing to look at, but could care less if I were butt naked in public. Plenty of other people disagree, though.

ghost_suburbia@reddit
American men wear a variety of clothing depending on context. Sleeveless (tank tops), shorts, swim trunks, are common. Men show off legs and arms. Shirts are required to go into most businesses, so you might not see shirtless men downtown, but closer to home or beach, you will. If you are looking in downtown Manhattan, those men are likely going to work - the context is different, they won't dress revealing. The other examples you shared are style differences. Showing a shag carpet of chest hair is gross to women, so men who don't manscape won't show off chest hair. Clothing that is too tight is not fashionable on men. Speedo bikini trunks for men are considered hilarious. And culturally, if a man shows too much of his package with tight clothing, that is considered lewd.
SabresBills69@reddit

It is a more buttoned up culture, clothing-wise. When I lived in St Louis I would sometimes go to Truffles (fantastic steakhouse so so good) and it was a high end place, but i would see this old guy in a tank top most times. One day i saw him leave in a lambo and realized oh he can do whatever he wants. I also think a lot of the clothing restrictions are homophobia based.

zdrums24@reddit
The clothes you describe are mostly associated with homosexuality. Exposing skin is generally less acceptable here across the board. Were a more prudish society in that way. But also any kind of exposed skin is usually associated with femininity. speedos remind us of bikinis. Capris are associated with women. Low neck lines are for showing off cleavage.
Theres also the fact that we are just fatter than european nations. What we do have to expose is often not something you want to show off.
TumbleFairbottom@reddit

licksquadtraps@reddit
I and some others were sort of trained like this. I used to take my shirt off all the time as a kid. I overheated a lot. But as soon as someone saw I was told to put it back on. I’ve never owned a Speedo, my parents got me swim shorts. No point in changing now. Not like I’m trying to accentuate my ass or anything.
So I wouldn’t say embarrassed. It really is just a training thing I think. I don’t know anyone who has worn a speedo, outside of school swimming and even then they usually have shorts. “Keep your shirt on.” Is a common idiom here too, that essentially means calm down. So we started associating shirts with emotional control at some point too.

I feel like all of the shirt options are common in the US during the summer. Speedos are for athletes, I can't imagine it ever being the best, most comfortable option for casual wear and just isn't in style. Similar to boxers vs briefs.
Ok-Energy-9785@reddit
Some probably do
aeyockey@reddit
Yes, but not everyone does. Speedos just aren’t a thing here culturally. Even competitive swimmers don’t wear them anymore. I attribute this cultural difference to the availability of the sun. Northern Europe gets way less sun and everyone wants to soak in as much as they can

Many stores or restaurants in america have signs at the entrance 'no shirts, no shoes, no service'.
This means if you come in without shoes or a shirt they will not sell you anything, and ask you to leave.
This is more common in beach or other tourist areas.

Are you asking about general clothing or beach clothing? It's normal for men to be shirtless at the beach, but unusual in most other places. I would assume men in the countries you listed don't go to work, to restaurants, etc without a shirt, which would be the same as here. Perhaps people in those countries live closer to beaches, or the pictures you see from those countries are from touristy beach areas.

I think it depends how you're raised more than anything. I've seen people who have no problem going out without a shirt and people who would never reveal that much. Personally I gew up in a pretty modest household to the point where you wouldnt even go shirtless around your own family.
dangleicious13@reddit
I would never go out in any of those things.

This is a dumb question. Plenty of Men in the US are shirtless in public. Go to any coastal city in California , Florida, Georgia, etc
