Is there any reason I *shouldn't* get the Lectric XP4 500W as my first ebike?

So like the title says, I've never had an ebike before. My primary use would be going to work and back (4 miles each way in a suburban area) and occasionally picking up a few groceries from the store. Something that can fold would be ideal, with a step-through frame if possible although that part is less important. It seems like the XP4 is the perfect sweet spot where you're not getting the absolute cheapest ebike that is unreliable junk, but not spending more than necessary either. Seems like you can't do much better for $1000, essentially.
So is there anything I'm missing? Any problems with the XP4 that would be dealbreakers? Do I need anything fancier or more expensive? Is 500W probably enough?
If it matters, I'm fat and out of shape. I've ridden a bike before but never an ebike and it's been many years since then anyway.

Don’t buy Lectric. Battery died second year and they are asking me to pay for a new $300usd battery. Infuriating.

Too late. This post is 2 months old lol.
SameOutlandishness21@reddit
I have the xp4 750 motor. Had it for about a month. There’s a state park where I live. Took the bike out there a couple of days ago, set in on tour mode and pedaled mostly with that setting so it was doing half the work. Was out for 8 hours, went 33 miles, and had 70% left on my battery when I loaded back into my vehicle. This is my first e-bike. I would recommend this bike to anyone
_midnight_mane_@reddit (OP)
Yeah I already bought it.
Inciteful_Analysis@reddit
Unless you actually need the folding capability, don't get a folding bike. There are significant downsides.
ThrowAwayInDisguise-@reddit
Any recommendations if I was looking into the Lectric XP4 in Ontario, Canada for $1400 CAD + tax? Apparently Lectric does not sell the Xpress 500 in Canada at all. If I had the option I could skip folding for cheaper/better durability, but looks like XP4 is my only real option so far.
amstrumpet@reddit
what are the downsides? this kind of comment isn’t terribly helpful when it’s left vague
Inciteful_Analysis@reddit
Typically heavier to reinforce the joint. An additional point of failure and potential safety hazard that requires periodic inspection. Less rigid frame which may not be an issue for many riders on pavement but becomes much more noticeable off road. There will always be some level of vibration introduced through the collapsible mechanisms and steering will never feel as solid. Some models mitigate this better than others.
Almost every folder uses small 20" wheels. These struggle to pop over curbs and are more volatile over rough terrain and potholes.
Cutting a frame in half has real and significant implications. This should be intuitive. But many do not see past the marketing message of convenience.
_midnight_mane_@reddit (OP)
Is there another ebike of similar quality and a similar price that doesn't fold?
Inciteful_Analysis@reddit
The Lectric Xpress 500. Fixed frame with real 27.5" wheels.
Simple_Cook6170@reddit
Lectric makes a solid e bike. I have the XP 3.0, have put 600+ miles on it and only have needed to replace the rear brake pad in ~2 years of riding semi-regularly.
Also I’m not a skinny rider either, not a problem for the Lectric bike. Hope this all helps!
_midnight_mane_@reddit (OP)
500W?
Simple_Cook6170@reddit
Yup! I thought about buying the long range but my commute is pretty short (~5 miles/ day) so didn’t need it.
Depending how far you’re going, the mileage on the website is set for a 180 lb rider, so keep that in mind if you’re planning on going for longer rides.
defiantcross@reddit
Only reason i can think of is just to get the 750w
_midnight_mane_@reddit (OP)
You think 500W won't be enough or I will appreciate the extra power of the 750W? Or you just think it’s a better deal?
hroaks@reddit
Stick with the 500. I own the 750 and if you read the reviews on it, they'll all say it has issues. 500 is more reliable
_midnight_mane_@reddit (OP)
Where are you seeing negative reviews of the 750W?
BorderlineGiant-@reddit
The motor is so much louder.
_midnight_mane_@reddit (OP)
The 750W?
BorderlineGiant-@reddit
Yes. Look up youtube videos comparing the 2.
NoGarbage1323@reddit
There used to be issues, but not anymore. Just get the 750w, believe me. 10ah battery is not enough even if you think you wont need it. 200$ for a longer lasting motor and double the size of your battery is just a no brainer
wedstrom@reddit
You will appreciate the power on hills otherwise it's not that big of a deal. If you live in an area with a lot of steep hills I'd get all the power you can.
BodSmith54321@reddit
I don’t think it’s needed and there have been quality control problems with the 750w.
ImNotDatguy@reddit
Bigger battery
Ridge_Hunter@reddit
For an extra $300 you can get the 750W motor plus a long range battery
Seems like a no-brainer…if you really feel like you don’t need either then get the standard one, but it’s a worthwhile investment
That said, for a similar amount of money you could also look into Velotric or even Urtopia…Himiway also has some interesting models for similar prices
There’s nothing wrong with Lectric…I had an XP 2.0 and it was pretty good but there were a few things about it that I didn’t care for…I also never folded it, so that seemed pointless. It was heavier than it needed to be in my opinion.
I’ve been looking at the outgoing Velotric T1ST, which will be replaced by the new Velotric Tempo…so there are some good deals on the T1ST…very lightweight and kind of like a stealth ebike
_midnight_mane_@reddit (OP)
Yeah idk I'm really torn between 500W vs 750W... I'm 250 pounds which is basically right at the point where a better motor might be better for wear + tear/ a smoother ride... And there are some hills in my area, usually not too steep but still... Do you think 500W could be substantially more fatiguing as I'd have to peddle more?
Ridge_Hunter@reddit
In the highest pedal assist and if you have it on cadence sensor you won’t really need much effort, if that’s what you’re looking for but the 750 would still make it easier/better
Have you considered the Xpress? It’s a lighter bike than the XP and that alone would help the motor. They make a 750 on it too but the 500W without the extras is $999…I’d go for the step through. It’s a torque sensor but if you’re trying to use it for exercise that would be the way to go
End of the day though it’s your money and you know better than some random person like me on the internet what your wants/needs are
Bikermec@reddit
Who will be maintaining it?
_midnight_mane_@reddit (OP)
Me. Why?
Bikermec@reddit
Many bike shops refuse to work on them.
_midnight_mane_@reddit (OP)
Why?
Bikermec@reddit
Insurance liabilities.
_midnight_mane_@reddit (OP)
Uh... Ok...
Prestigious_View_401@reddit
It really depends on the budget in the end. If $1000 is the absolute limit the $999 xp lite2 has a bigger battery. The 350w baby motor in the lite2 is pretty snappy. But for your exact needs (8 miles round trip), I would go for the xp4.
_midnight_mane_@reddit (OP)
My budget is more like $1500 all-in with accessories and safety gear included. I'm seriously debating getting the 750W for $1300 which comes with a bunch of free accessories if I buy before the end of the month.
Prestigious_View_401@reddit
If money isn’t an issue the xp4 750w is a way better bike.
AlternativeResort477@reddit
I’m looking at the 750
_midnight_mane_@reddit (OP)
What makes you want the 750? Have you looked at many other ebikes?
AlternativeResort477@reddit
The 750 has a larger battery as well
VoidAndSerpent@reddit
Id honestly get the 750w one. Im a larger person my self biking 9 miles to and from work. The extra wattage is worth it. Its a solid ebike.
_midnight_mane_@reddit (OP)
You feel the extra wattage is useful because we're big or for other reasons?
VoidAndSerpent@reddit
I feel like its more, for me personally, because I had not ridden in nearly 20 years and some major health altering events.
The extra wattage is honestly more about the "oomph" than the top speed. It’s the torque that really makes the difference - having that extra kick is a game-changer when you’re starting from a dead stop at a light or tackling a surprise hill.
Dont get me wrong, the XP4 500w is still a great bike...for someone who didnt really take years long break.
Humble_Key_4259@reddit
A folding bike sounds good until you have one. Folding bikes suck in general unless you absolutely need it to fold. I’d strongly recommend trying it before buying one.
_midnight_mane_@reddit (OP)
OK but what sucks about it? Why so vague?
Humble_Key_4259@reddit
The entire bike is less rigid so it is prone to more wear and damage and doesn’t feel as sturdy, the frame geometry is often quite strange so the fit never feels right, and they can be quite tedious to actually fold and to carry/load once folded.
Habu93@reddit
Get the 750, you’ll need it for hills.
Professional_Ad_3082@reddit
from whart i've read, they are the next "named" company to go bankrupt.. so good luck on parts down the road
Significant-Pen-6049@reddit
Source? Now Im curios
Prestigious_View_401@reddit
The only part that might be hard to source is the hub motor. Nearly everything on a lectric can be easily replaced
_midnight_mane_@reddit (OP)
Wdym by "named"? Where did you read this?
Inciteful_Analysis@reddit
Lectric is wildly successful and a safe bet. They don't make the best bikes but arguably they make good enough bikes with the best value. You can ignore this guy.
hroaks@reddit
When I bought my Xp3 last year support replied unbelievably fast 24/7. I could email at 1am and got a helpful reply within 30 minutes. This year I've waited weeks for support to give me a useless reply
iliketopramen@reddit
I bought the 500w xp4 about 1 and a half months ago as my first ebike. I use it to commute a total of 10.5 miles a day on flat terrain. I'm about 170lbs and the bike has been great. I ride throttle only when I'm commuting, but I use pedal assist when I'm just out exploring. The only thing is that it's super windy where I live and I wish I had the 750w version just to pull me through the wind. However, if you don't care about hitting top speeds all the time, the 500w is fine.
Salemsara@reddit
It’s plenty good for getting started.
ozimarco@reddit
For such short distances, I would just get a decent normal street bike.
Prestigious_View_401@reddit
Get out of the sub. God why are you even in r/ebikes
ozimarco@reddit
I have an e-bike, a Gazelle Orange C7+. I bought it when I was almost 69. It has done 78,750km or 48,933 miles as of today. The main reason I got an ebike is that we were living in the hills at the time, some of these so steep that even the ebike was struggling in first gear on Turbo. If I were only cycling 8 miles a day, mainly on flat terrain, I would not bother spending more money on an e-bike.
Prestigious_View_401@reddit
Get out of the sub if youre going to say get a normal street bike when someone asks in a ebike sub which ebike they should get.
_midnight_mane_@reddit (OP)
Biking 8 miles without assistance in a single day is no small feat when you're fat. Especially when you then have to walk at work.
-Nili@reddit
Comon 8 miles a day...
That's a very healthy bike ride.
ozimarco@reddit
I take your word for it. I'm nearly 78, but not fat. 4 miles one way is a warm-up for me.
amstrumpet@reddit
I’ve got this bike, it was my first ebike. I’m not horribly out of shape but definitely not in shape. It’s fun, it’s got good enough range for what I want, I don’t have any reason I’d need the 750 at the moment. I recommend it
_midnight_mane_@reddit (OP)
Nice. What do you use it for? How far do you take it? Any hills where you live?
amstrumpet@reddit
I do basically always pedal, I’m almost never doing just throttle.
amstrumpet@reddit
I mostly have been taking it out for rides for fun. Where I live there is a nice network of bike paths, decent hills. I can get 15 miles easily including some hills without going low enough on battery to worry. On flat surfaces I can go 15 or so miles and not even get to 50%, if I’m pedaling enough and keeping the speed low.
