RogueDahtExe@reddit
Yeah I think ima sit on my 5800x3d for the next 9 years.
kikimaru024@reddit
If all you're using it for is gaming, I don't know why you would've even considered upgrading anyway.
Realistically no CPU is going to give you much better performance than an X3D.
poopyheadthrowaway@reddit
Depends. From what I remember based on reviews when it came out, Zen 4 is about the same gaming performance as Zen 3 X3D, so anything better than like a 7600X will probably outperform it. That said, a 5800X3D will probably still be plenty for a good while longer, even if it's not at the top of the charts.
Question-master3@reddit
Depends on resolution too tbh, no reason to upgrade at 4k
Strazdas1@reddit
Since when does resolution matter in CPU bottlenecked workloads?
Question-master3@reddit
You mean gaming? At 4K there's barely any difference between most of these CPUs, so if someone is gaming at 4K, there's even less of a reason.
Strazdas1@reddit
If you take the kind of games youtubers test yes. but there are entire genres of gaming that are CPU bottlenecked and a proper CPU can double your framerate. Resolution wont matter there.
Beige_@reddit
Well, less likely on 4K. At some point your CPU is too slow to maintain your wanted minimum 1% FPS or similar breakpoint and then you'd want to upgrade. For me that's 40 FPS and the reason I had to upgrade my 4690K 6 years ago for instance.
kikimaru024@reddit
Most reviews don't test MP/MMO games, and many miss the edge-case games where X3D dominates (e.g. Factorio, Baldur's Gate 3).
Dietberd@reddit
X3D only dominates Factorio as long as your game world does not exceed the 3D cache. For bigger game worlds there is no meaningful difference in performance between AMD/Intel.
Strazdas1@reddit
There are many games in that genre that will be fitting inside the cache for most of your playtime though, and it really helps.
DwarfPaladin84@reddit
Besides messing around in Maya and Blender for drawing, me playing mainly MMOs (WoW and LOTRO being my main) the X3D is damn awesome.
Went 9950X3D so have the best for any product workloads and then gaming. I won't be upgrading bare minimum until AM6 baring any issues with hardware.
Strazdas1@reddit
This is Zen 3 x3D though. If you are using it for gaming being stuck on DDR4 alone is a big deal.
levelstar01@reddit
still sitting on my 8 year old 2600
dweller_12@reddit
5500X3D for $150 on Aliexpress with monthly coupons. I would grab one before they're gone.
PlsDntPMme@reddit
A year and a half ago I grabbed a 5700X3D for $120 or so. I sat on it for awhile and somehow got the lowest price. It was such a steal. I only wish I’d tried to get more.
schu2470@reddit
That's what my wife's machine is running with 4x8gb sticks of DDR4 and a 3070. She's probably going to be on that system a few more years if she doesn't jump to Mac with all of Microsoft's nonsense.
PlsDntPMme@reddit
Oh hey I just swapped out my 3070 for a 9070 XT last week. It was a good pairing and I’ll miss it! I swapped for better Linux compatibility as I make the jump at the same time to also get rid of the Windows garbage.
I also have a MacBook Air and it’s an awesome machine. I highly recommend if she’s looking for a smooth non-windows experience without any tinkering whatsoever! It’s just multiplayer games can be super hit or miss in terms of compatibility.
schu2470@reddit
That's quite the jump! 9070xt is a great card and should be awesome for Linux gaming given the excellent driver support.
An Air is what I'd actually love to get her switched over to. She doesn't game much and when she does it's all light weight indie games and emulation. Her desktop is mostly for working from home via Epic through Citrix and various webapps with dual monitors and basic desktop peripherals. Her current laptop is an old i5 4220 something with 4gb of RAM and is only ever used when she's tired of sitting at her desk. Figure an M5 Air would be perfect to handle desktop duty in clamshell mode with a dock or hub that she can just unplug and take with her for on the go usage.
PlsDntPMme@reddit
I’ve found my card is much louder than the 3070 not this is a more budget card versus my premium 3070 variant. Otherwise, it’s definitely improved! I’m finding I don’t notice it nearly as much as i thought I would but I’m hoping it’ll age gracefully with double the VRAM of the 3070. Drivers have been super smooth with CachyOS so far!
It sounds like an M5 would be perfect for her and will last a very long time. The portability is incredible and I love the screen, keyboard, and touch pad. It’s leagues above any other laptop I’ve used and I have a top of the line Dell XPS for work. The battery life and compatibility with virtually any PD charger is great too. I’ve even used it with an 18w adapter. I’m sure you could manage most indie games with CrossOver if they don’t support Mac natively. I have noticed that some of my docks don’t work fantastic with a second monitor but I’m sure I could fix that if I found a more compatible one.
plantsandramen@reddit
My man you got some incredible upgrades your way. Even if you got a 5600x.
onewithoutasoul@reddit
I went from a 2700 to a 5800x3d. Night and day difference
CaiusCossades@reddit
i7-920 to 5800x3d here
jigsaw1024@reddit
I got 10 years out of my X58:
i7 920 -> Xeon X5675 as a CPU upgrade. Was literally a $30CAD upgrade for a 30% frequency boost, and 2c/4t extra.
Went from HDD to SATA SSD.
Went from Radeon HD 6870 to a Nvidia GTX 970
snacktivism@reddit
I went from a 2700 to a 5900X. Same experience.
Dirt cheap marketplace score with some bent pins. Dropped straight into my X370 board once I fixed them and booted just fine.
poopyheadthrowaway@reddit
Yeah this is an instance of where you can probably pick up a decent Zen3 CPU for cheap (especially if you're willing to buy used) and not have to upgrade anything else.
LiliaBlossom@reddit
you’ll be fine. I sat on a 7770K for nearly 9 years until I got 9950X3D a few weeks ago. And that was when a decade of quadcore standard suddenly became obsolete.
IguassuIronman@reddit
I went from a 3770k -> 12700. It all comes down to the games you want to play. I only had to upgrade because I wanted to play Elden Ring
gatsu01@reddit
That's the best reason to upgrade, foul tarnished.
IguassuIronman@reddit
I also wandered into Microcenter when they rolled out GPUs peak shortage and impulse bought a 3070ti that the 3770k was definitely holding back... But before that I was just going to get ER for my PS5
hansrotec@reddit
I was going to say same 3770k/2600k to 7800x3d. I rocked a hd 7970 until 22/23 cannot remember exactly now
Cheeze_It@reddit
Hey you know what at least it's not only still very fast, but it's also power efficient.
work-school-account@reddit
I know someone whose CPU upgrade path has been Q6600 -> 2500K -> 1600AF -> 5800X3D. I'm guessing they're planning on sticking with that at least until AM7.
hidekin@reddit
similar to me . Q6600 > I7 3820 > ryzen 1700 > ryzen 5800X3D.
SJGucky@reddit
As an AM5 user, I will buy the 10800X3D after it has been discounted and stay on that until AM7.
plantsandramen@reddit
Same, or wait for a used 9800x3d in about 2 years.
NeroClaudius199907@reddit
You wouldnt buy Intel, but Intel offering 51% uplift, 3x+ MT & gaming while costing less than what you got 5800x3d for.
Prince_Uncharming@reddit
And how is that relevant?
They aren’t buying a 5800x3d, they already have it. Along with the necessary RAM and mobo.
NeroClaudius199907@reddit
Intel & amd raising prices still means they're getting much better value than 5800x3d at $450
Prince_Uncharming@reddit
Yes, but again, they’re not buying a 5800x3d. They already have it, so with prices rising, the decision to stick with it is even easier.
NeroClaudius199907@reddit
Why is it easier? intel & amd increasing prices by 15% means its less value than 8C $450 5800x3d?
gelade1@reddit
Easier simply because they dont need to sell stuff and rebuy stuff?
NeroClaudius199907@reddit
Sure he can stay on 5800x3d for next 9 years because amd increased prices by 15%
Cole3003@reddit
The 5800X3D is free to use because they already own it, genius.
NeroClaudius199907@reddit
He's making moral judgement of 8C 5800x3d for $450 as if its the best thing since slice bread. Its already been surpassed in value 2 years ago
Cole3003@reddit
Where in the world are you getting that from???
NeroClaudius199907@reddit
Same thing 1080ti users did when 5080 prices increased by at same prices & less they're getting more value than what they got 1080ti initially for
But sure he can stay on 5800x3d for 9 years when intel & amd increased prices. although intel prices are actually lower than last gen
Pugs-r-cool@reddit
That is not what they said. at all.
NeroClaudius199907@reddit
What did he say? 15% price increase means he'll stay on 5800x3d for 9 years?
Why though?
Pugs-r-cool@reddit
They said the 5800x3D is good enough that they don’t feel the need to upgrade for the next 9 years. A price increase of other CPUs only gives them further reason to not upgrade.
NeroClaudius199907@reddit
What if the other cpu price increasing is already lower price than 5800x3d? have 51% better st, 3x+ Mt and better gaming?
certainlystormy@reddit
consider that someone can only afford to upgrade extremely infrequently. i have a 13700k and its not in my budget at all to jump to anything newer in the next year or two lol
NeroClaudius199907@reddit
He'll stay on 5800x3d because although 15% price increase is better value than before, but for him he wouldnt be able to afford 5800x3d in this economy again?
Prince_Uncharming@reddit
It doesn’t matter. They already have it, and the cost of current CPUs going up makes upgrading even more costly than keeping their current CPU, which currently costs them $0. I do not know how anyone else can spell this out more clearly for you than it already has been.
At this point I’ll just assume you’re being dense on purpose lmao.
Pugs-r-cool@reddit
It’s irrelevant because they already own the 5800x3D. That CPU costs $0 to continue using. Upgrading, even if that new CPU is cheaper than what they paid for the 5800x3D, will cost hundreds of dollars once you factor in the platform upgrade.
The upgrade will give them better performance, yes, but if they’re satisfied with the performance of the CPU they already own, there isn’t really a point in upgrading.
NeroClaudius199907@reddit
People usually upgrade for added value but okay if 5800x3d satisfies him for next 9 years.
algaefied_creek@reddit
Yeah I’m gonna have to sit on my 5600X3D, which was supposed to be a “placeholder” until the 7800X3D arrived and then got cheaper and DDR5 prices declined with maturity and got better latencies.
Sigh.
Winter_Pepper7193@reddit
if you stay with your cpu for 15 years the next time you are able to play the videogames you wanted to play during that time they ALL will be fixed and fully patched, and 5 bucks on steam or even free on epic games
big fucking savings right there, and maximum performance, also games are NOT getting any better at all since people that dont like videogames started to make videogames around 2016 cause it became more profitable than movies. Games will NEVER, EVER, be better than the ones already released. EVER, cause they are made by the same people that have ruined movies: the professional ceo, the money maker that doesnt care one bit about the thing he is doing
you just need to have legendary patience
I went from a core 2 quad to an i5 13500 straight away, imagine my backlog of actually GOOD games...
Strazdas1@reddit
and if you waited 100 years youd cure aging. Just have legendary patience.
liven96@reddit
you should probably play more than 1 game a year if you genuinely believe this
Winter_Pepper7193@reddit
I play more than one game a year, but why play games that I wont enjoy just because they are new or other people are playing them, like a lot of people do? makes no sense whatsoever
should I start vapiing and saying "bro" too?
it takes ANY gamer about 5 minutes of gameplay to know if a game is one of the games in your ballpark or not, you are supossed to know your own goddam tastes. And if youve been playing a long fucking time you should have developed a spidey sense to even know if a game that you MIGHT enjoy is or is not an empty product
you know what I did when the guy above you mentioned expedition 33? youtube some gameplay. It took me 2 minutes to know that thing is NOT for me. Will never play it, not interested.
and let me tell you something else: No one, and I mean NO ONE, will even gaslight me into thinkin what they release today is good stuff when the people that had been making videogames retired cause of old age and were replaced by the professional CEO, the wilson guy from electronic arts, and every other motherfucker just like him
people that DONT like videogames CANNOT make good videogames
people that DONT like movies CANNOT make good movies
and people that DONT like music CANNOT make good music
they just CANT, no matter how hard they try, it will be just like the mcdonalds ceo trying that burger
and thats why so many games are failing nowadays: cause when you despise what you do: IT SHOWS
flourit3@reddit
Plenty good games have come out even if they started production in 2018. Expedition 33 being one recent example. Expand your horizon beyond yearly titles like cod & fifa, or IPs that have been milked to death like assassins creed and you’ll find some gems. Doesn’t even have to be indie titles
Winter_Pepper7193@reddit
expedition is not for me, I see the gameplay and my brain goes "console game, skip", and ive not played a fifa game in this century and stoped playing cods before the one they put a dog on it, I didnt even play the one with the dog. I have TONS of wow gold and theres no way I buy a cod game even if im not actually paying for it, but then again, you wont see me buying a diablo game either, The only new game im as curious about as some of the older stuff Ive got yet to play is the new stalker game, everything else doesnt even register

I think prices will come down next year. Natural gas prices are way up and that’s gonna kick data centers in the pants. Then they’ll stop buying chips. Then we upgrade.

The x86 mafia. (and adjacent ARM mafia)
Fortunately RISC-V, an open ISAs, is on the rise.
EmergencyCucumber905@reddit
Are there even any desktop RISC-V CPUs?
3G6A5W338E@reddit
If what you mean is "performant enough" or "comparable to at least Zen2", not yet but this summer it should be there with Tenstorrent's Atlantis (Ascalon-based SoC).
Before that, the spacemiT K3, the first publicly available SoC with RVA23-compliant CPU, performance somewhere between rpi4 and rpi5, ships in the first batch of development boards in April.
psydroid@reddit
Do you mean socketed? I don't think that really exists yet.
I've been using a RISC-V SBC as my main 24/7 system for a year now. Of course it doesn't have the performance of a modern ARM or x86 CPU, but things are moving fast with SpacemiT K3 being in development promising quite a performance increase compared to the current generation.

3G6A5W338E@reddit
Fortunately, my main workhorse is a 9800x3d with 96GB ECC, which should let me ride the storm.
I want a K3, but the RAM situation says no. I'll wait and see. If some board shows up with DDR5 DIMM sockets, I have a 4GB DDR5 module in a drawer, which should suffice to play with. Maybe Atlantis, the Ascalon SoC Tenstorrent promised us for the summer.
psydroid@reddit
I don't know why people are spending so much on x86 CPUs. You get a lot more performance/dollar with ARM and hopefully soon RISC-V too.
I do have a legacy x86 desktop with an AMD AM4 Ryzen 5 3500X I got for €40 but that's just a backup coming from an AMD AM2 system from 16 years ago.

Wait, Intel just released CPUs with better price to performance ratio than AMD had. I expected AMD to counter with lowering some their prices.
