this comes with two mags, mags are around $70 but you can use inexpensive 5906 mags after removing the disconnector (which takes literally 30 seconds)
the going rate's now $240 shipped for both good and very good, the extra mag makes this one a no-brainer

Isn't there something weird with the extractor on these? I thought I read something about it but I can't find it again. Something about them being somewhat fragile and hard to find?

The extractor on this (and many other external extractor guns) has a weird heat-treating regime that leads to them being brittle. Star only ever sold these to fulfill military contracts in India and elsewhere and didn't really support them afterwards.
If you look at the extractor under bright light, you can see it's clearly treated differently than the finish on the pistol itself, and is often kinda red.
Don't slam the slide home on a chambered round and don't run steel case ammo either. High pressure ammo is fine (these are designed to shoot NATO subgun rounds), but the whole design spec on these is intended for use with NATO ball.

So I actually just bought one of these and took it to the range. I didn't know any of this and shot about 50 rounds of steel case, with a couple failure to extracts. Will shoot brass from now on, but do the extractors flat out break or just wear faster with steel case? and what do you mean by slamming the slide home on a chambered round?

Meaning dont place a round in the chamber with the slide locked back; then release the slide.
Its a method used to prevent bullet setback in cartridges.

If you get lucky the 5906 mags "might work". The draw bar is the wrong shape making trigger pull hard, and the last round slide lock probably won't work because of this. At least it doesn't on mine. Tried both the OEM and Mecgar 5906 mags. The SW mags also don't seat right, but they do lock in. This is the stock mag

idk about the extractor but the firing pins on all stars are brittle, this is the rare one that can be dry fired but only with the safety on

Just an FYI, Mec-gar 17 round 5900 mags don’t work without modifying the mag body to not interfere with the trigger bar. The 15 rounders and 20 rounders work fine out of the box though.
