Why was Ed hardy and Tapeout shirts and fashion so popular in the late 2000s into the beginning of the 2010s?

I was only a little kid at the time watching kids stuff but I remember seeing teens and young adults wearing it what caused it to blow in popularity.

I had never heard of them before finding some at this weird streetwear store in college. Believe it or not, I was a total hipster. I had just gotten my student loan check and splurged because they fit me so well and I thought they were unique. I loved the low rise, big pockets, flare legs. I wore them for like two years straight with a white leather belt that had big black hearts on it, I think it was Jessica Simpson brand. At the 80s dance nights people just started calling me "heart belt". But then the brand became super popular among douche canoes and I'm sure I outgrew those size zeros after that anyway. I think I moved on to Levis Type 1s.

View on Reddit #81699287

red286@reddit

There's a bit of a difference between Ed Hardy/Christian Audigier and TapOut/Affliction, although it can be a bit hard to miss at times. Ed Hardy/Christian Audigier was based on Ed Hardy's tattoo work. It was basically a tattoo you could take off. They were pretty popular with skateboarders and the like early on, but later it became more trendy in general and they abandoned it shortly afterwards, after which the trend died down (since the whole point was to look like an edgy teen, and edgy teens stopped wearing it). TapOut/Affliction were clothing brands tightly affiliated with MMA, and most specifically the UFC prior to their clothing sponsorship deals. They were designed more around the 'tribal' tattoo design, so were a bit similar, but they were almost exclusively worn by UFC fanboys, so were a much greater red flag. So, early Ed Hardy = edgy teen skater boi, late Ed Hardy = wannabe clout chaser, TapOut/Affliction = UFC/MMA fanboy/chud/probably beats his gf.

Ok, I think i know this. Ed Hardy was a real guy and he never paid his taxes. When that came to bite him in the ass he had to make a lot of money really quick so he basically licensed all his tattoo art to some shady folks who put it on everything.

I wore them. I liked the designs and it was something my nerdy ass liked and was considered in fashion. They were also good at showing your chest and arms if you had some muscles (which I did back then…sigh). Yea some douchebags wore it but sometimes you gotta say fuck it and get what you like.

That’s kind of the same way I was, I had been kind of nerdy in high school, but then hit the gym in college and really put on some muscle…. I wasn’t gigantic but athletic and those shirts showed it off a bit. I chalk it up to being insecure in my 20s

My “alternative” teenage daughter really likes Ed Hardy currently. She buys it from thrift stores. She understands the douche bag history and apparently that’s part of the appeal.

I contend Ed Hardy tattoo designs are genuinely great-looking, and only got annoying when the douchiest people on earth took to wearing them on t-shirts. The Tapout shirts were big with people who wanted some kind of MMA tough guy stolen valor and unironically listened to "Bodies" by Drowning Pool. Both were popular with Jersey Shore nightclubbing types because they wanted to look as loud and Peacock-y as possible in every aspect of their presentation *Processing img bgg2codjgfrg1...*
