I can feel those horrid thin seats through the photo. I guess that’s normal now…

Transatlantic flight on a narrow body airplane with those seats... yikes.

Yeah fuck that. At least, as they can fit 2 more rows of seats in, prices will come down for everyone!

Thick seats doesn't mean comfortable, the old thick seats were so much less comfortable.

I'm sure these thinner seats are super comfortable, that's why the airlines are installing them, always concerned with passenger comfort!!

Everyone who goes on about how there is no difference between a narrow body and a wide body have never basked in the glory that is the interior bathrooms in wide bodies where you can actually stand up. Nothing sucks more than the narrow body bathrooms where your neck is bent sideways to have any chance of not pissing all over everything in there.

Lot of the new planes have been like that. If someone puts a water bottle in the seat pocket then it’ll just dig into the back of the person in front

But you get a snack bar that'll 100% be cleaned out before taxiing and refilled probably once by the FAs.

I somehow doubt that, especially with full sized drinks. Maybe if they had smaller 8oz cans, but I’m skeptical how that would work practically. Unless maybe they only open it late in the flight after all food has been served.

Go apply for an FA position and tell them in the interview that you refuse to serve food and beverages no matter what, let's see if you get hired. Unless you've been helping yourself to the galley your entire life, that's concerning.

are you just making up arguments in your head now? Where did i say that FAs dont serve? They are there for your safety. SnooFoxes6610@reddit

Obviously they will defer serving if there’s a safety concern I don’t why you’re assuming I think otherwise. Obviously safety comes first but serving and attending to passengers is a core function of being a FA. I just thought you framing it as a privilege was odd, just like I think it would be odd to tell someone that getting their luggage back in good condition or at all is a privilege.

Yeah, you don't need to have 4" of cushion to be supportive and comfortable. My impression is that both old plusher seats and new thinner ones aren't very good, but I'd guess someone could make a better thin seat (but it would probably weigh more or be less durable so airlines wouldn't want it).
View on Reddit #81648921

SmugAlpaca@reddit

My $2000 Herman Miller chair has a half inch or less of padding and because of the floating suspension nature of the seat it’s the most comfortable desk chair I’ve ever sat in. Similar thing with the new seats - people forget how uncomfortable it was to sit on the plush cushion on top of a big bulky steel frame, hurts your hips after a while

Being fat isn’t the same as having decent cushioning on a seat. Being 140 lbs and skin and bones on a hard seat is more comfortable than being 240 lbs and fat on a hard seat even if it’s wide enough
View on Reddit #81639127

serrated_edge321@reddit

Yeah my fat friends bring an extra cushion... Now you've got me feeling bad for the seats. 🤭 Not designed for such gluttony...
View on Reddit #81642372

rnoyfb@reddit

This is a false dichotomy. Many things are the consequence of a series of choices but that doesn’t mean the consequence itself is chosen or that it’s not a medical issue. Choosing to have sex without a condom is a choice that can result in syphilis but no one chooses syphilis and it’s still a medical issue The downvotes are most likely for saying you feel bad for inanimate objects and not people and for saying that they’re gluttons. Gluttony is the temptation to overeat and not everyone over 240 lbs is gluttonous Also there are people a *lot* heavier than 240 lbs that still fit within airline terms and airlines should accommodate them or change their terms. I’m well over 240 and I can fit in a seat with the armrests down without spilling over but if a seat causes pain after only an hour, they should fix that
View on Reddit #81718381

serrated_edge321@reddit

No the literal reality is that the manufacturer designs seats so that can hold people that are not only 240lbs but way, way fatter than that lol. Airlines need the seats to be able to safely hold the fattest passengers who they'll sell a ticket to, and that's a lot fucking fatter than 240lbs.

nursescaneatme@reddit

And look at that (absence of) legroom.
View on Reddit #81690699

whiskeytown79@reddit

I wouldn't mind having a thinner seat if it meant I could have a little more legroom, but airlines are always like "ok enjoy your new 28 inch seat pitch.. watch a movie to take your mind off of the fact that your knee is crammed against the seat in front of you"

Few_Tale2238@reddit

Just as it is on their current A321neo’s. IFE and larger bins are nice but those planes aren’t comfortable at all. Thin seats, 30 inch pitch, and maybe two inches of recline. Plus the FA’s seem to hate them too

View on Reddit #81656744

BadahBingBadahBoom@reddit

I mean sure they might be better than she of the 90s old-style seats that were still going even up to quite recently, but I've flown on a number of airlines with these 'slimline' seats and for more than 4/5h they are simply horrible, some slightly better some slightly worse but all still noticeably uncomfortable for long-haul. What's worse is these don't even look like mid-haul slimline seats airlines like Qatar have that still have fair bit of padding, these look like the absolute minimal slimline seats that Ryanair and other budget airlines use. And even for 2-3h those start to be very uncomfortable.

Yeah aware, just commenting that the seats in this look identical to latest Ryanair version. Will they go slightly more premium in practice? I dnu. But you'd think if there was going to be a difference they would make the rendering of seats look *more* expensive for marketing and go with the lighter/less padded ones in practice to save money, rather than the other way around.

That was my one complaint when I flew United for the first time last week (on a 767), compared to other airlines they are stingy about seat padding. After an 8 hour flight my behind was starting to really get sore. A shame, the rest of the experience was really good.

This. I just flew United for the first time in probably 20 years (737’s both ways), and, while most of the experience was pretty decent, I was surprised at how bad the shape of the seat bottom was. It had extra bolstering in the back under my tail bone, which was bizarre and made it hard to sit up straight.

This is a reduction in service disguised as a perk. They'll always bring you this stuff if you ask. Theyb allways have. The idea here is to make you used to getting it yourself so that crew can be moved to doing other than things. General rule: If you're in economy, it's never about making travel better for you.

What other profitable things would the crew be doing during the cruise phase on a 6 hour flight?
View on Reddit #81651992

Up-selling people on alcoholic beverages, premium snacks, and hot food. You can either pay for the flight attendant to bring you the good stuff, or go wait in line with the plebs if you just want a coke and a bag of pretzels.

View on Reddit #81696539

LuckyFlyer0_0@reddit

The snack bar is for passengers to help themselves outside of regular meal service. At least that's how most airlines do it. They're not making it a self-service buffet where half the economy class hikes back to get their food on a narrow body airliner. It would literally create a huge bottleneck, the attendants wouldn't even be able to do their job nor would it be safe because of turbulence concerns
View on Reddit #81655070

Salsalito_Turkey@reddit

You're right, but I also wouldn't be surprised if they do a single beverage service near the beginning of the flight and then it's self-serve the rest of the time.
View on Reddit #81655346

LuckyFlyer0_0@reddit

It really wouldn't make any sense tho. Up selling beverages and foods hardly takes up any time. You can only ask passengers once if they want anything and most say no per meal service. There's really not much else for the crew to do on a 6 hour flight so making it self serve wouldn't be worth it imo.

I can't think of any transatlantic flight on any airline where I couldn't just go to the service car area and get a drink or snack. Flight attendants often (after the first meal service at least) set up water, sodas, and snacks back there proactively. United has become king in finding new ways to market common features and gaslight people into thinking its unique. And at the end of the day, I can't get excited about a 75 cent can of coke or a 50 cent minibag of nuts (or chips) on airlines. I find the whole marking and blogger swooning with airplane food and snacks to be bizarre irrational behavior.

On the 787–9s, it’s funny how United/American/Alaska enriched on some form of the [Elevate Ascent](https://www.elevate-seats.com) suite variant. It is interesting at how similar the A3 21 XLR seats look between American and United, though American is using a Collins off the shelf seat, while United has a custom design? I wonder who the vendor is.

United’s seat is made by Elevate

For folks who have been on flights with the snack bar, like Jet Blue, how does it work? Is there still a “regular” snack/drink by service and the bar is just a supplement during longer flights? Or everyone just queues up for a snack/drink when the seat belt sign goes off?
View on Reddit #81643055

HawkeyeFLA@reddit

For JetBlue at least, regular economy service just after take off like usual. The buy on board, then drink carts, snack carts, trash. Then they open the Pantry. Pantry only on Mint configuration planes. On the 16 Mint seat planes, it's located at the bulkhead area between Mint and economy. It's nice when you're towards the middle / front of the back cabin. No need to trek all the way to the back galley if you want something.

Anyone else getting flooded with these types of United posts all over social media? I’ve seen like 5 different posts across Reddit and IG about the new “relax row” alone. Seems like a very coordinated PR push.

View on Reddit #81654012

Critical_Program_247@reddit

I have some ideas why but I’m curious what your rationale is?
View on Reddit #81654089

troglodyte@reddit

As long as it's a supplement to regular service, great. It's a nice way to provide drinks on long flights without waking the entire plane. The obvious concern is that they see this as a vehicle to cut drink services, but I'm not sure I see that works on a long haul. I bet they keep two drink services on most transatlantics and for everything else you just walk to the back. These seats are ridiculous though.

It’s wild seeing A321 and transatlantic in the same sentence. I know narrow bodies twin jets have been capable of this for a while (not counting Hawaii/AK), but my brain is tuned for it only being a widebody thing. Super cool!
View on Reddit #81638839

757 has been doing this since before the Continental merger with United. More recently, Iberia and TAP Portugal have been doing it with A321s for years now.
View on Reddit #81646618

facw00@reddit

Yep I've flown Continental/United/Iceland Air 757s across the pond (obviously with a stop in the middle on Iceland Air). Honestly no problem (as long the headwinds flying west aren't so bad that the 757 doesn't have the range). People freak over the comfort level on the narrowbody, but honestly the seats are the same size, so if the plane has the range, I'll happily take the one with fewer middle seats.

I had this on a Jet Blue coast to coast flight once. I've never felt treated more like an adult on any other flight. No pro-forma beverage cart to slam into my knees. Just snacks and drinks for the noshy and thirsty. Twas grand.
View on Reddit #81630017

k_plusone@reddit

Agreed. The meal service / beverage cart part of the flight is consistently the most stressful part of it for me. I brought my own water because I'd rather not wait 20 minutes just to beg someone for a 4 ounce plastic cup. And whatever microwaved "meal" is coming, I already know I won't care for it. On a flight, my preference is to be left alone

None of the American Airlines care about aesthetics or quality. It’s like they’re not proud of their work or simply don’t care enough since they get paid either way if you like it or not, if you live or die. Flying the middle eastern airlines gave me such a great perspective on how a little bit of effort goes a loooooong fucking way.

Suppose that is one way to deal with the payload limitations on longer routes! :P You could give everyone in economy more leg room from taking out the seats needed to make the range work. Nah, stick a snack bar in there, it will distract the passengers from the uncomfortable, thin, seats. /s
