Do your ranges really let you shoot steel case? Mine only allows brass...is that common?
whiskerfreak@reddit
No steel case at mine either, I think cause they collect sell the brass
Kookaburra2@reddit
It's a stupid fudd rule imo. The only ranges I've seen this at are the ones that dont allow you to even pick up your own brass because they want to sweep it up and sell it.
Alivaronas@reddit
The range I go to allows steel cased but not steel core ammo. A lot of indoor ranges will not allow steel cased though.
YXIDRJZQAF@reddit
steel core isn't the same as steel case, AFAIK this doesn't have a steel core but some ranges ban all steel case because it used to almost always have steel core
gofish223@reddit
Correct No steel core in these. Ordered the other day and tested with a magnet. Steel case, not core.
Acrobatic_Dinner6129@reddit (OP)
No issues with shooting it at my range. You just can't use it in the rentals.
BurnerAcctThuggin@reddit
Brother, WHY does the 124 never go on sale? I just don’t get it.
caterham09@reddit
Do you have a significant preference for 124 over 115?
Shooter_Q@reddit
Some people want the little bit of extra weight to smack steel poppers in case they don’t get the ideal impact angle.
Kookaburra2@reddit
A fun exercise is to load up a mag of 115 and 124. Maybe it's just me overanalyzing and making up differences in my mind but 115 feels like more of a snap and 124 feels like more of a push. I like the feel of 124 more in competitions.
Ok_Crab_3522@reddit
124 if you want to hose with non comped guns.... hot 115 for anything comped or ported... 147 for subsonic if you have like a pcc/sub gun/smg with a can. Silenced pistols (like actual handguns) are dumb anyway.
Sneaux96@reddit
The only 9mm I have preference for is 147 for suppressed applications, the preference of 115 or 124 makes no sense to me.
QuigelyPelvins@reddit
Unless it's sold out, I bought 300 bucks worth of the 147 gr blazer clean fire suppressed stuff from academy this morning.
I_SNORT_KITTENS@reddit
I did the same last night. I just went and checked and it looks like they are sold out now.
SilentR99@reddit
same for the 115gr blazer, like $109 for 500. picked up only one box and its already out of stock today not surprised.
1610925286@reddit
124 runs better in a lot of pistols and allegedly has a better recoil impulse.
Quw10@reddit
I haven't really noticed a difference between the 2 out of any of my 9mms other then my VP70 gets a failure where the round ends up sticking out the ejection port instead of feeding properly. My AR9 seems to like the 124gr more when running it with my FRT though.
Bortjort@reddit
Some guns like one or the other more not just in terms of function but how the recoil impulse feels. This mostly applies to really stiffly sprung guns or guns that have been tuned for competition though.
PapaNoffDeez@reddit
I'll preface this by saying that I completely understand that it's not 1:1, and a matching bullet weight is not the same as practicing with the actual round. Especially if your 124gr is +P, then there isn't even really a relation lol.
BUT I do have/carry both 124gr and 147gr self defense loads, depending on barrel length. I would rather practice with 124gr fmj ammo over 115 because it's at least closer to the SD rounds and the cost is usually like an extra cent a round or the same.
lxa1947@reddit
It’s nice to have the same grain as your carry ammo so the drop is the same in your optic
lxa1947@reddit
I agree. I buy whatever is cheapest. I’m just saying that it’s a consideration.
MandoUnbanned@reddit
Thats some boomer talk. Theres hardly any difference in bullet drop between 9mm 115gr and 9mm 124gr out of a handgun
caterham09@reddit
There's less than 1" of drop difference at 100 yards between 115g and 124g
BurnerAcctThuggin@reddit
Yeah. I don’t like how 115 shoots, and I I exclusively carry 124 and/or 147 depending on application. 115 is not my jam.
caterham09@reddit
Fair enough. The difference isn't noticeable enough for me to care. I don't shoot subcompacts though often so I might be more inclined to care with one of those
YouveGotNothingToSay@reddit
If it makes you feel better the last box of 124gr I bought recently had 5 light primer strikes and gave me the only FTF I've ever had in my gun. Read some reviews online and saw people having the same experience. So I'd personally stick to Blazer for the 9mm NATO
yami76@reddit
It was on the same sale but oos quickly
Khunning_Linguist@reddit
Rivertown had it at 200 shipped recently. OOS right now tho.
brawneisdead@reddit
Rivertown is the goat
RegardedDipshit@reddit
They are still goat but their prices increased as soon as they gained popularity. Was nice while it lasted, good company. It's only a matter of time until they are forced to start claiming state sales tax in most places, then it's game over
Essentials-@reddit
I recently bought their 124 grain brass and it was made in Turkey with BPS head stamps so don’t feel too bad. Their 115 grain steel and brass has been rebranded Magtech.
asantiano@reddit
124 Blazer is available.
JPal713@reddit
Picked up 124 nato same brand for 21cpr
Acrobatic_Dinner6129@reddit (OP)
I hear ya
Shooter_Q@reddit
Academy has some good deals on all ammo due to that 10% off, which included other brands as well. I’m getting Blazer Brass there for less than any online shipped prices, around 22.5 CPR
That said, I would really recommend people try a box before committing to a large lot of Monarch or otherwise.
Monarch Steel has not been good for my confidence this past week; had a weird pattern of fliers that would produce tight groups at 3 different POIs. Couldn’t get reliable hits from 40Y-100Y on steel due to how errant it was. Couldn’t pass some 25Y standards because of random throwaways. It was fine for 15Y and in. Worked perfectly fine for 4-5 other shooters with me. Their brass has been okay for me as well, just not stellar.
mikochu@reddit
During Florida's tax free season, I bought 2k rounds of this for $400 out the door. Everything I feed this to eats it up. Majority of it goes to my CAR15SD.
Puzzleheaded_Fee4616@reddit
Any failures out of your car15? I have one also
mikochu@reddit
No failures here with a standard carbine setup equivalent. Though, I heard some folks having to go down to a Sprinco Yellow and weight-less buffer.
Acrobatic_Dinner6129@reddit (OP)
Tax free season is year round where I live. Shout out nh!
Upstairs_Catch_5943@reddit
I go to nh just for that reason
SonnyInAZ@reddit
Just ordered 40 boxes (2k) for around under 400 after 10% discount and taxes and shipping
Ready-Landscape6007@reddit
These are the worst. Jams and failure to fire.
BenDover42@reddit
What are you putting them in? I don’t prefer it but my Glocks feed it fine.
Dunkin_Deeznuts_00@reddit
Every gun that isnt a Taurus or HiPpint feeds it fine.. People just want to bitch and moan lol.
YouveGotNothingToSay@reddit
Have a Taurus PT92 that has basically only ever fired this. Shoots just fine
Legitimate-Simple-98@reddit
Ive shot them in my AKV plus 5 other handguns of different brands... zero issues.
MedicalRepublic751@reddit
Better check your mags and slide components then. I’ve never had issues with this ammo. I’ve shot it through many Sigs, CZs, etc.
Mahlegos@reddit
I’ve shot over 10k rounds of it with no issues. Sounds like whatever you’re trying to run it in is picky which sucks, but not really on the ammo.
fratticus_maximus@reddit
My order got cancelled twice. Hmmm. I even went the shipping route.
Acrobatic_Dinner6129@reddit (OP)
Mine got cancelled initially cuz i had the wrong zip in my billing address but I replaced it and just got the your order is packed email
fratticus_maximus@reddit
I see. Re-ordered. Too good to not stock up a bit.
boririv@reddit
Any issues with these?
SportsBallBurner@reddit
Made in Brazil are Magtech
Made in Turkey are dirty but in my experience have run just fine, others have claimed to have issues
boririv@reddit
That's what I've heard, that you have to check the box and pick out the Brazil ones
likeaboz2002@reddit
I’ve shot a boatload of this, occasional light primer strikes but for range use it’s G2G
Acrobatic_Dinner6129@reddit (OP)
I've read its just rebranded mag tech which has been good for me.
Khunning_Linguist@reddit
Headstamp same as Magtech?
Old_MI_Runner@reddit
The box estate made in Brazil which makes it Magtech. The 115gr brass Monarch that I got a few years ago before they started sourcing from Turkey stated made in Brazil and had a MON head stamp. It has been stated by everyone who seems to know in this forum for years that this steel case Monarch ammo has been sourced from Magtech for years.
Khunning_Linguist@reddit
I had thought that it was magtech but was checking in to see that it was still GTG. Thanks!
Old_MI_Runner@reddit
As I stated in my other reply here in this posting one really needs to determine for themselves whether or not Magtech steel case or any steel case works reliably in their firearms. If Magtech still case ammo worked in your firearms before then I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work now. I've seen no one reply in postings that I've read over the past two years stating they saw any changes in the quality of Magtech steel case ammo. Just note that steel case ammo can cause a little bit faster wear on some firearm components such as extractors. Many do not care about a little faster wear as long as the savings exceeds the cost of a new extractor.
Khunning_Linguist@reddit
All my 9mm guns eat magtech for breakfast lunch and dinner with no problems. I was just checking to see if it had been replaced with another manu for Monarch. I've been buying it for 194-210 per 1k for the last year or so and don't mind buying a couple thousand more rounds at same price point. Cheers!
Legitimate-Simple-98@reddit
Yes, " 9mm Luger CBC" just like the Magtech steel cased. Just checked mine.
Khunning_Linguist@reddit
Cool! So some are getting same headstamp and some aren't. I'll prolly order a couple K later today.
Legitimate-Simple-98@reddit
Yeah either way its Magtech steel. No issues with it.
Mahlegos@reddit
No, MON for monarch, but it is indeed magtech nickel plated steel case.
Khunning_Linguist@reddit
Gotcha, thank you.
RawbWobbles@reddit
Might break your extractor. It’s broken 2 extractors on 2 different P365’s I’ve owned & one extractor on a Glock 19 Gen 4 I still own. The Sig parts-breakage with their MiMdian garbage was at fault, in my mind, until it broke the extractor on my Gen 4 19. To be fair to the G19; it has a significantly higher round count than either of the broken extractors from the 365’s. One (P365 XL) extractor broke within 400 rounds, and the other (P365X) extractor broke around 700 rounds. All 3 times using monarch steel.
If you have the know-how to replace an extractor & have spare parts laying in a drawer; I’d say go for it.
Old_MI_Runner@reddit
Based on feedback in Gundeals most not have any issue with steel case Monarch (Magtech) but a friend of mine bought Magtech steel case locally from another store and he hates it due to malfunctions it caused with his pistols. This may be another situation where one should buy a 50 round box first before committing to a large order. You could buy a box of Magtech locally before you buy a large order of Monarch online.
yami76@reddit
It’s given me issues in my p365, ftf specifically. That and the lack of lubricity makes em stick in larger cap mags and so I’ve had issues with em in my pcc as well.
Old_MI_Runner@reddit
I got some brass ZSR Turkish 115gr 9mm Monarch back in 2024 when I was hoping it would still be made by Magtech. I am still trying to use it up as the muzzle speed varies from 1000 to 1200 FPS and I get 1 to 2 rounds per 100 that fail to fire. I like to save money on ammo but sometimes a few cents per round is not worth it.
If others have no issue with steel case Monarch then I think that is great. I included one 50 round box of steel case ammo in one of my orders for the Monarch Magtech 5.56 ammo but they shipped me a 250 round box of brass case Monarch Magtech so I could not evaluate their steel case ammo.
duke_flewk@reddit
They shoot well but accuracy sucks, these are about 10-12” spread at 25 yards. If you just shoot 3-5 yards like normies you won’t notice.
DugBuck@reddit
I've shot a lot of it and had an issue with just one round in my g19. Nasty ftf that had it locked up pretty good. Had to hit it with my purse several times to clear.
charsons@reddit
Sparky and dirty, no issues with glock or MPX
Legitimate-Simple-98@reddit
0 issues, have shot over 5k easily of this exact ammo no issues, its Magtech steel cased.
boririv@reddit
Awesome, I have Academy nearby
Mahlegos@reddit
Echoing the other guy, shot north of 10k and it’s good to go. My go to anymore really.
lxa1947@reddit
I’ve shot a few hundreds of these, never gave me an issue
DrLongJon@reddit
Bought 1,750 rounds. Came to $0.189 per round.
Justownit41ce@reddit
Many ranges I go to don’t allow steel casings and the outdoor ranges are too far.
Acrobatic_Dinner6129@reddit (OP)
My range allows it just not in rentals. Im still working on joining a outdoor range
Justownit41ce@reddit
That’s awesome! It gets frustrating having to show ammo every trip but then I remember the people who aren’t as responsible so I don’t really trip. Our outdoor ranges are State ran. They’re great but the distance sorta offsets it but still worth the drive.
Lu_ShenZ@reddit
Nice. I have an integrated suppressor on the way for my MPX, so ive been stocking up on cheap 9MM.
lenouveaufil@reddit
all the steel case is Brazil made
Lu_ShenZ@reddit
Aye , you are correct. Thought this was brass. My bad.
glyphosate_enjoyer@reddit
Had a $15 and a $25 off. $351 for two cases. .175cpr for two cases is a deal. Had to get it before you animals did. For what it is, academy lost one of my packages of this same ammo last week. They promptly refunded me. Head stamp is MON made in Brazil. 500 rounds ran great in my SS AP5.
newto2a@reddit
Has anyone confirmed if you can stack the $15 off for setting up an account with the % off for $300 of ammo? The math isn’t mathing since I added the $15 off.
dorozco@reddit
No shipping to IL :(
4KT_MOOFIN@reddit
Steel casing 🧃
Tumbleweed-Pool@reddit
FYI it's 5% off over $200 on ammo so you can buy 21 and get ¢50 off.
ColonelOfKorn@reddit
For what it’s worth, I run monarch steel case through almost all of my shit without issue, even my nice guns. It doesn’t have enough ass to reliably cycle my Czechmate, but that’s to be expected. DWXs eat it, TS2 eats it. Of course, my Glocks eat it.
Just make sure you get the made in Brazil variety instead of the turkshit.
dacherrybomb@reddit
I see it for 20cpr currently
TopicFederal4235@reddit
You need to buy $300 worth and also Academy credit card holder. GL
Legitimate-Simple-98@reddit
put $300 dollars worth of it in your cart.
Acrobatic_Dinner6129@reddit (OP)
You have to spend 300+ for the 0.18c it actually came out to 0.176 cpr for me after the $15 off
cosmoassmankramer@reddit
Are you factoring the 10% off if you spend over $300?
PretendIndependent6@reddit
Not a big steel case fan. I would just spend the extra for brass peraonally
Legitimate-Simple-98@reddit
If it can't eat steel then it doesn't deserve brass. I've shot well over 20k steel cased rounds of all caliber and never an issue... especially with this Magtech steel cased.
Bourbon-neat-@reddit
Seriously, I don't get people's hangups with steel, the biggest material costs in ammo manufacturing is the powder now so steel case just isn't going to be that much cheaper than brass like it used to.
But if you're not reloading and doing high volume shooting, it'll still end up adding up to considerable savings.

I can buy Magtech steel cased any day of the week for 20 CPR. You can't come close to that with brass unless its a crazy sale. People get brass on a really good sale for 20 CPR, I buy Magtech steel cased for 15 CPR on a really good sale. There is still a big difference....
PretendIndependent6@reddit
As of like 2 weeks ago you could get brass for like 20-22 cents not anymore. I guess steel is more attractive
majbumper@reddit
Just ordered 3k Blazer brass for 21.5 cpr shipped last night, from Academy. But yeah, I think that might be the last time I see that price for a while.
PretendIndependent6@reddit
I ordered 2 cases of 9mm from Target sports 2 weeks ago for 22 cents shipped and their prices have just been going up over time. I’m done with them after my shit expires this year though
Legitimate-Simple-98@reddit
Only on good sales. Normal price was 24-26 CPR.
If brass cased is on sale for 20 CPR then I buy brass, if not then I buy steel. But I have enough at this point that I just wait for stupid good deals.
PretendIndependent6@reddit
No normal price was that
Legitimate-Simple-98@reddit
Im not going to sit here and argue. If "normal price" was 20 CPR for brass then it wouldnt be posted here anytime it was 20 CPR because it wouldnt be a deal. It often went on sale for that price. But it wasn't every day pricing.
PretendIndependent6@reddit
22*
Bourbon-neat-@reddit
Oh I know, you're preaching to the choir on this one, I was just thinking more of the before times when steel case 223 was often ~10cpr cheaper than equivalent brass.
Legitimate-Simple-98@reddit
I miss those days....

The ammo itself is fine, even if I have to deal with an extra failure or two to eject every 1000 rounds, who cares.
The problem is that a lot of indoor ranges don't allow you to shoot it, which makes this range ammo more of a pain in the ass than it is worth it, imho.
Legitimate-Simple-98@reddit
Thats a range issue not an ammo issue. My range allows steel cased if the bullet is not magnetic. The old fud lore of "if its magnetic then its steel core".
RonaldWRailgun@reddit
yeah, I mean, I prefaced by saying "the ammo itself is fine".
Since I can't change the range rules (I agree they don't make sense, but I think it's more to avoid potential sparks when the case hits the ground with unburnt powder around), and I otherwise truly love the range I go to (I can draw from holster, rapid fire, they organize run and gun competitions once a month etc) then this ammo is not a viable option for me.
Legitimate-Simple-98@reddit
I have literally never heard of that being a reason before. Not saying you are wrong but never knew that was part of the thought process. If they are worried about a tiny spark coming from the ground but not flames that come out of barrels a lot closer to the rounds sitting on the bench then thats an odd take...
RonaldWRailgun@reddit
Yeah, regardless it's a rule that a lot of indoor ranges have, so it's worth considering that if people are planning to stock up on this. I don't want people to end up with thousands of rounds that will take years to shoot because they have to wait for a chance to use them (ask me how I know LoL).
As far as being worried about unburnt powder more than bullets, it's a valid concern, that's why ranges are supposed to clean the firing lane every so often, if you let gunpowder accumulate in front of the firing lane, bad things happen, indoor range fires are terryfying:

Generally speaking, bullets are very resistant to heat and sparks, much more than unburnt powder is.

They work fine for me but I totally understand
PretendIndependent6@reddit
My Glocks run it fine but my AP5 not so much. Maybe if I get some HK mags
Bourbon-neat-@reddit
That's funny cause my AP5 runs through steel case like a champ.
PretendIndependent6@reddit
What mags
Bourbon-neat-@reddit
Both MKE and funny enough my AC Unity extended mags worked fine with em
PretendIndependent6@reddit
I will have to get some and try it again. Sucks I was just by an academy in Indiana yesterday and they don’t have them in Michigan
MPK49@reddit
My range doesn’t allow it
boririv@reddit
zinc coating
epicchocoballer@reddit
Magtech steel is beyond fine
FischlandchipZ@reddit
some of the best 9mm ammo out there. Runs in everything perfectly, clean, priced right. Always buy this stuff. I dont notice any difference between this and brass ammo I shoot.
