Applying for passport. Mother’s name is different. What to do?

I will try to make this as brief as possible. Earlier this month I applied for my first adult passport. Took photos. Paid for the application. Sent off documents. I got an email this morning from the Passport Office. My mother’s first name on her birth certificate is different than the one on mine. I was told growing up that the name my grandparents chose was changed to her middle name and she had a new first name when she was 6 weeks old. This would have happened in early 1964 as she was born in December of ‘63. I don’t know if they ever made it official. Both grandparents and mother have all since passed away in the last decade. I have no contact with my father. Not in years. I know my parents got married in September of ‘92 and I was born the following June. But I don’t think they were married for very long as my younger half brother was born in ‘95. This is my first adult passport. I am at a loss right. I need help.

Got it fixed and I have my passport now. The passport office looked into it and I found out my mother’s name was changed when she was baptised. It was on section 10 of her birth certificate. My brother applied for his last week. I was advised to put a note in with the birth certificate to check section 10 so he doesn’t run into the same issue as me. We have different last names.

I had a similar situation last year. I was told to get a letter signed by my Mother explaining the reason for the difference. Sent that away and got my passport a week later.

That wouldn’t work for me as my mother passed away 7 years ago

Contact HM Passport Office and explain the mismatch properly. It does not necessarily mean your application is dead, but they’ll likely want evidence linking your mum’s birth name to the name on your birth certificate. That could be a marriage certificate, deed poll, statutory declaration, affidavit, old passport details, or any official record showing the change. If you do not have the documents, tell them that clearly rather than guessing, because they do allow explanations where parent details cannot be fully provided.

The passport office is asking OP to provide a document matching OP's mother's name as stated on their BC. Or am I missing something?

The passport office have sent an email. OP doesn’t have what they asked for, so should phone and speak to someone there who can give further guidance as to what they can do.

Can you obtain a copy of your mother’s birth certificate? If you have her death certificate also you might be able to get a copy of her original birth certificate. I would call and speak to someone in person at the passport office.
