The Gen 2 FFP version can be found on sale with mount for ~$400 and apparently has much better glass.
Vortex desperately needs to simplify their product stack. The differences between named lines is undefined and enigmatic, with varying quality even between items that have near-identical product names.

This is a pretty high mount designed for use on inline rifles like an AR-15. The optic itself is fine but your buddy's probably going to want a set of rings that keep the glass close to the bore.

It’s good but the eye relief at 8x isn’t ideal. I had it on my 308 for a while and it got me a buck. It’s on an ar15 now because I needed something that catches light better.
Glass is clear, holds zero well, illuminated which is nice. Just be aware you will have to hold it closer to your face at 8x

Currently own the Venom 1-6, 3x Strike Eagle 1-6, and one Strike Eagle 1-8. The Venom is the newest to me, and I don’t have a huge amount of time behind it. I think the Venom has the best eye box, although I’m not sure it’s significantly better than the SE 1-6. The eye box on the SE 1-8 is rough; I honestly don’t like shooting it above 6x, which sucks because the subtensions are only accurate at 8x. To my eyes, the 1-8 also fishbowls worse at 1x than the either of the others, although based on reviews this seems hit or miss between individual optics; one of my SE 1-6 fishbowls more than the other two. Feature to price point, the Venom is the way to go IMO.
