Countries That Won't Participate In Eurovision 2026 & Their Reasoning. What do you think?

Why the fuck does Israel participate?
Sugar_Short@reddit
Come on, what can be more European than israel?
This-Wall-1331@reddit
So basically we have four EUROPEAN countries boycotting the Eurovision because the organization refuses to ban an Asian country that has been committing a genocide for over 70 years and that has started a war with Iran less than one month ago.
David_liz@reddit
Go to say tho, 70 years and managed to genocide just 0.03% (yes check that yourself) is pretty shitty, at this rate it will take over 30,000 years to finish the job.
Madcat00@reddit
https://blog.richmond.edu/livesofmaps/files/2023/12/Picture1.jpg
30000 years ? This is how ethnic cleansing and invasion looks like.
Potential_Resist1487@reddit
Well math would work if genocide only happened when populations are mass murdered when it you do not need killings to count as genocide
David_liz@reddit
If you dont need killing to count as genocide than that word as no meaning anymore, it's just a way to say "bad thing happening to people"
Potential_Resist1487@reddit
It does have a meaning, you just don’t know the meaning, decided that is only mass murder and preferred to be ignorant as looking it up by yourself is way too much work
Here you have the definition used by the United Nations for example https://www.un.org/fr/node/218413
David_liz@reddit
Great! so by that defenition:
"with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group"
The math actually supports this is incorrect because if the intent is to "destroy in whole or in part" than we can agree that it would take at least a few thousand years at the current rate which would be ridiculous, there is no intent.
Also, this assumes the Phalestinians only live in Gaza, which they dont, todo any of these you would need to do the same to the ones in the west bank - never happend, and to the ones that have Israeli citizenship - never happend either.
So even by that definition it does not work out.
As a side note I think that that definition does more harm than good to any actual victims of genocide as proving intent is an impossible standard, You know, unless you write it on your flag, like Hamas does.
AmbitiousSympathy665@reddit
The claim about genocide from any serious, legal authority only is about the gaza war from 2023-onwards, so you're already wrong there. And if you want to go into which countries are really asian there are plenty of candidates here.
flying_bed@reddit
Nah this is a safe anti-Zionist place you'll get your ups, here is one from me bro
thatMrGecko@reddit
99% certain our reasoning is dishonest
DenyDerpy@reddit
If the turks participate in eurovision, it would be more difficult for the west to support zionist doğs when it attacks türkiye xd
NeroToro@reddit
Yeah we're the last ones to complain about the voting system, we always give Azerbaijan 12 points no matter how good or bad the songs are and vice versa.
Whole_Obligation_776@reddit
Everybody does that.
SarcasmRevolution@reddit
Belgium and the Netherlands are really the only exception to this rule…
Whole_Obligation_776@reddit
I didnt memorize every country, but don't they have favorite countries of their own? I mean nords love hugging each other, Greece and Cyprus same, than the Portugal-Spain-France love triangle kinda happens, these are the ones I remember.
SarcasmRevolution@reddit
Well, it’s more like brothers and twins that are supposed to “belong” together.
But Belgians and Dutchies are severe frenemies. Or rather, we like them and think they talk funny, Belgians hate us. The Belgians succesfully seceded, but the Netherlands still “won” the battle by being economically and historically dominant ever since.
Like, many people in NL don’t even know about that war at all, vice versa it’s quite a thing.
Whole_Obligation_776@reddit
huh, I thought Netherlands was the seceding side in 1830.
Botanical_Director@reddit
Same as the 3 countries in north Africa, they haven't participated in like a decade if not more.
Tjazeku@reddit
Ours too, in reality the broadcaster doesn't have the funds to justify financing participation and achieving nothing. It has nothing to with Israel, proved by the fact we withdrew from ICJ lawsuit against Israel.
jakobx@reddit
Of course it was because of israel. They communicated this very clearly.
cpefiwti@reddit
Did u think Israel spawned in 2023?
Botanical_Director@reddit
Are you arguing that these countries didn't participate in Eurovision since the 80's just because of Israel?\^\^
AlbaIulian@reddit
Only Morocco ever participated in North Africa, did badly and haven't bothered since. Algeria and Tunisia never joined.
Botanical_Director@reddit
Even more stoopid to have them on this map then, thanks for the extra info
WienClown@reddit
They’re still members of the EBU.
darling1907@reddit
lebanon and tunis was going to, later they withdrew because of isreal's participation.
Whole_Obligation_776@reddit
Map contains the official reason, while we can speculate that Erdogan maybe found it too gay too, or other stuff, but Turkey really haven't participated since the voting system for Eurovision turned into a 2 tier system where multiple countries are automaticly qualify for the final contest. I also find it unequal treatment and I kinda support Turkey's withrawal from the contest under these conditions.
Every participant should equally share the financial burdens and equally have an opportunity in the final contest.
Collanp@reddit
I also find it unequal but how is it such a big deal? Objectively, France and Italy would qualify either, Spain as well likely. That would just put other countries at risk of getting zero points or getting last. Sacrificing the UK and Germany for the self esteem of everything else looks pretty just to me. /s
Kaamos_666@reddit
“Would qualify either way”, how do you know? Are you a clairvoyant?
thatMrGecko@reddit
oh, I'm against the whole idea of eurovision from the start. it's extremely fun and I follow it to this day, but I sincerely believe it should be a private multinational organisation. ebu framework is ridiculous.
Whole_Obligation_776@reddit
I am not as familiar with it maybe as you, but I know it generally involves public broadcasting companies of different countries, so it is always connected to the state institutions. I dont know if they would like to give up this massive PR instrument to other companies.
thatMrGecko@reddit
exactly, which means countries can (and often do) use eurovision as a vehicle for cultural propaganda. now, when that propaganda is "look how neat our traditional music sounds!", that's fine. but things go political all the time and I feel it sullies the experience a bit.
Whole_Obligation_776@reddit
Meh, just accept it as a PR tool as it really is and either distance yoursel, or try to enjoy whatever wacky or punk groups manage to make their way in to this circus once in a while. I dont really follow it but when a meme band manage to make a show in it I just enjoy it with the rest of the internet.
barracuda4848@reddit
Your reason is best imo.
Rest are political or economical. You guys pointed at main problem with the competition itself. 100% agree with Turkey.
Fair_Quality_3788@reddit
Its too gay, too sexy, too expensive.
thatMrGecko@reddit
so you're saying that if only it was cheap...
WitherCro2@reddit
It's a completely valid reason though
darling1907@reddit
its kinda dishonest but not %99 percent. while participating TRT was sharing the cost like Big6. Yet It was getting more and more away from their likings. If you are paying some chunks of money to something, you would like to have a word about its politics right? I believe EBU diddnt allow this request and TRT decided not to join anymore thus not to spend any money on it. Since then ESC became more and more gay friendly and kinda showcase of LGBTi+ movements. And thats not something you can show on state television here in Turkiye. so if it wasnt 2013, after 2014 TRT was not going to join anyways in my opinion.
in each last editions there were rumours about return of the Türkiye, even if the return was successful, after these Israel shenanigans, TRT would withdraw again(which I would support as a decision) If there is no place for Russia, there is no place for Israel.
PeroCigla@reddit
But if it was honest, I'd totally support it
joriks@reddit
Eurovision is a woke shit show. Should be cancelled and that money spent for something useful.
tusmuertostos@reddit
since when african countries participate in eurovision?/gen
ShyHumorous@reddit
What about my favorite European country Australia, are they participating?
moshiyadafne@reddit
Yes and is predicted by many to be in the grand finals after 2 years of not qualifying.
mikrofonijaSBK@reddit
Well sure, now when jury is back in semis we will se back of Australia and Belgium in finals.
Usual-Package7120@reddit
We have an excellent entrant (I'm also aussie lol) she's like the 'darling' of Australia and a good singer haha
Stromovik@reddit
They were part of Britain, also they represent Euro love for genocide
godric420@reddit
Yeah because only Europeans do genocide.? Nobody ever committed genocide or imperialism before the Europeans introduced it to them.
Stromovik@reddit
No. But only Europeans managed to do it on continental level.
CommercialImpress926@reddit
Really? No Chinese or Mongolians? Or Islamic caliphates? Huh that’s weird
Quitelowquitetall@reddit
Looks at the Japanese, especially during WW2.... :(
Also, I'm sure that the American and African empires were completely peaceful and didn't absolutely wipe out their competition
Capybarasaregreat@reddit
Are you including your fellow Estonians in that blame? Last I checked, your people and mine were subjugated and ourselves colonised and genocided during the time when other Europeans were doing that around the world.
Stromovik@reddit
The current official postion is to praise 20th SS division recruited from locals during the only time that there was a plan genocide estonains as part of GeneralPlan Ost. ( they were chosen ones for germanization as the plan was to kill off less than half )
Capybarasaregreat@reddit
So your best argument is coerced traitors? Do you blame all jews because of kapos and Group 13?
godric420@reddit
You’re down playing the accomplishments of the Mongol Empire. They didn’t kill up to 2 million people and the Islamic golden age, in the sack of bagdad for you to shit on them.
Stromovik@reddit
Australia has around 3 percent of native population, North America has also around 3 percent.
Mongols killed a considerable percentage of the world population. And last remrant khanate was taken over in 19th century.
But I would still give the medal to the bloody British
Common_Source_9@reddit
They had their moments, yeah, but they have nothing on the chinese and the mongols and timurids.
AdRevolutionary1673@reddit
Don't mind the Russian bot, spreading its "The West is the devil" narrative like usual.
starxidiamou@reddit
Don’t mind him!? But he seems cool
Virtual_Jump7770@reddit
Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan are also participating, always have been
TicketEffective2261@reddit
Estonia also is not i think
salzigebreze@reddit
I honestly agree. its not fair why the „big 5“ qualify automatically without winning, without competing. not fair at all. turkiye got it right.
Collanp@reddit
I agree. I think all countries should pay the same share and get the same opportunities to get to the final
ephesusa@reddit
What do you mean Italy hasn’t participated for a decade.. they won it just few years ago
unidentified1soul@reddit
Um, Italy's Maneskin won in 2021; they were awesome! I doubt that Italy only marginally cared.
greasy-throwaway@reddit
The big 5 pay the vast majority of the contests cost, if they wouldn't finance it there'd likely be no Eurovision, they want something out of it though
Trombone_legs@reddit
The gig 5 pay the money so it can go ahead every year. The broadcasters are going to continue paying of their own countries don’t get to even qualify.
Seems pretty fair unless there is another funding model agreed where all participating countries pay more.
Sonasije@reddit
Eurovision is shit,I hope that sick gay bi trans political contest stops.... Maybe 15 yea ago it was something ypu could listen or watch but now I really hope it ends...
Usual-Package7120@reddit
I still think it's unfair that Israel can compete (despite being in a war and also not being on the european continent) and Russia can't - and it's on the continent. Should be that both are banned or both are allowed, not separate rules. Guess that's why people are boycotting though so, good on them for realising this.
Tight_Blueberry6382@reddit
Eurovision is unfair western Zionist slop which limits what individuals can do based on what there government does lol
ChanclaTodopoderosa@reddit
First Georgian I see who doesn’t support Zionists
ProudJury6765@reddit
do they usually support Zionism? Why? (Genuine Question)
Shaolinpower2@reddit
A good chunk of their country is held hostage by Russia since 2008 war. They support whoever against Russia i assume. (Not so sure tho)
ChanclaTodopoderosa@reddit
Generally yes, though I see more and more people rejecting it (younger population obv). a few Georgians told me that it’s because of having a very old Jewish community in their country (though I don’t see it as a valid reason, quite the opposite lmfao). Maybe they’re big investors too, I might assume because of my last trip to batumi - literally the biggest billboard I saw was on a casino and written in Hebrew, apart from many other signs in hebrew
ProudJury6765@reddit
Damn I had no idea about them having a very old jewish community! You learn everyday about new things

74C5@reddit
At least last year the one with the arguably best voice and choreography won.
iamunabletopoop@reddit
For how bad the last few years have been I'm not even upset that we got these winners. Loreen and Nemo might not have been the favorites to win, but holy both are good. Also JJ is fantastic aswell and deserved to win
shikana64@reddit
How old are you?!
SituationRoyal6535@reddit
And then they let dirty peasants choose winners.
Classic-Exit4189@reddit
Lowkey i agree with them. Eurovision is embarrassing.
Hertje73@reddit
You prefer how it was before? Boring and grey?
awjeezypeepsman@reddit
Unironically the good old days when the grandeur was minimal at best and so-called campiness was not shoved down our throats.
MartianExpress@reddit
ESC was best when it didn't embrace American-style songwriting (minimalist arrangement, harmony seen as more important than melody, melodic movement (almost) exclusively in the vocal line, soul/rnb influence).
Marizemid10371@reddit
Well it could pass as art then, now it's a totally kitch something aiming for provocation with few exceptions... And every year is getting worse.

74C5@reddit
The male singers from Italy, Portugal and Sweden (2021, 2017 and 2015) are all straight. So are the televote winners in 2024 and 2023.
Interestingly, all other male gay singers (apart from the winner last year who simply had the most impressive voice) were eliminated in the semi-finals the last few years or received zero points from the public. Even the male winner in 2024 has actually been in a romantic relationship with a woman for years.
Odd-Organization-740@reddit
I'm talking about aesthetic, not actual sexuality.
74C5@reddit
We’ve had several male singers dressed very formally or plain (black suits, black trenchcoats or a simple white t-shirt) winning this decade (2025, 2019, 2017, 2015). Non-straight aesthetics by male performers were regularly punished with low televotes unless they had extraordinary singing voices backing them up.
Alternative-Fill-799@reddit
Well if you realize that the ones openly homosexual don’t get votes, the point you made doesn’t make much sense. “You have to be gay or a woman to win”

It got officially banned, because the company responsible for broadcasting Eurovision in Russia was taken over by the government. Semantics, I know

Morocco not participating because of Israel is hilarious
bosnanic@reddit
Hilarious that Russia is rightfully banned from Eurovision for invading Ukraine but Israel get's the okay to participate when it launched a bombing campaign against Iran plunging the entire middle east into war that on top of all the crimes they did in Syria, Lebanon, the West Bank, and the Gaza Strip.
adamgerd@reddit
Just a thought but maybe because one was attacked and one is the attacker
bosnanic@reddit
I didn't know Iran attacked Israel first let me see "The 2026 Iran war began on 28 February 2026, when Israel and the United States launched surprise airstrikes on multiple sites across Iran, including targets in Tehran"
Or like how When Assad fled Syria Israel launched 480 airstrikes within 48 hours and invaded the UN-monitored demilitarized buffer zone in Syria to secure more territory around the Golan Heights.
Paithegift@reddit
Nice try. Assad would still rule Syria and murder his opponents to this day of it wasn't for Israel punching Hizballah in the throat and sticking it up to Iran. A-Sharaa and his cronies saw that Assad's allies are in shambles and took advantage, which they weren't able to achieve before because IRAN, Hizballah and Putin kept Assad's regime alive.
bosnanic@reddit
So just not going to even try to defend or explain why Israel breaking the 1974 disengagement agreement by invading the UN-monitored demilitarized buffer zone in Syria was a good thing?
Weird almost like Israel destabilised the region as much as possible to push their expansionist goals...
Paithegift@reddit
You defend first what Iran and Hizballah did in Syria and how it wasn't Bosnians, or other Europeans, or NATO, neither other Arab countries, nor the US, but Israel, that created the conditions for Assad's dictatorship to fail. Also defend how Lebanon has been held hostage for decades by Hizballah and Iran and how the government there only found courage to speak up and try reforms after Israel beat Hizballah enough, not any Muslim or Arab nation.
bosnanic@reddit
Lmao yeah no defence of breaking international law and violating multiple peace treaty just "wuh abbout" it says a lot you can't even try to defend Israel's actions at best you are comparing them to Hizballah what great moral standards to be compared to.
Sandn1bba@reddit
I convinced a 100 thinkers with one proof but I couldnt convince 1 ignorant with a 100 proofs. No point in arguing with an israel supporter as they will keep coming back to “eeh but 7 october KHAMAZ attack israel and started the war” while they ignore the fact that the colony has been infecting and killing the natives since ‘48
Paithegift@reddit
That's what you are doing. Don't project on me my friend. I understand that you are probably a Muslim who was trained to hate Israel since before you could think for yourself though
Pleasant-Feeling-644@reddit
Interesting to see Bosniak defending UN seeing how the did fuck-all in Srebrenica. UN also did nothing with Council Resolution 1701 in Lebanon so Hezbollah could bomb Israel no problem. Hezbollah also had plan to invade North Israel after October 7. Can you really blame Israel not trusting UN ?
bosnanic@reddit
I am more inclined to hate the groups and leaders who violated the UN safety areas and mandated while killing civilians to achieve expansionist goals like Israel did.
I don't see how Hezbollah planning to invade via Lebanon is grounds for Israel to invade a confirmed non-militarized zone and bomb civilians in the area while then letting Druze rebels with Israeli military arms flood Southern Syria to prevent a proper response.
Pleasant-Feeling-644@reddit
You don't see how ex al-Qaeda leader taking over unstable neighbor is problematic ? People thought syria gonna be isis country. It was all before al-Sharaa showed he is willing to be cordial to the west. Maybe Israel should have armed the Alawites too so they wont get killed in Sectarian violence, thanks god the Druze are safe
bosnanic@reddit
So now you are changing your argument from "Hezbollah was going to attack" -> "well uhhh maybe Syria would have attacked" breaking a UN peace treaty and killing civilians over a hunch and no real intel sounds like something a terrorist state would do thanks for proving my point.
Pleasant-Feeling-644@reddit
Changing what argument ? your first argument was oh my precious UN. I gave you examples how UN is useless and there more like Rwandan genocide, UN peacekeepers child rape and more, Why would anyone trust organization that show failure again and again ? Just because of "mah global word order" ?
Your second argument is my innocent ex al-Qaeda lead Syria that only did some sectarian massacres why would anyone ever be worried about it.
I do agree with you attacking Iran especially without concrete plan was a stupid idea
bosnanic@reddit
I like that you are blaming the UN for Israel breaking the UN brokered agreement. You putting the Hutu militias and the VRS on the same level as Israel is not the winning move you think it is.
Your argument of "I have no proof that Syria was going to attack but uhhhhh they deserved to die" is a crap argument. Israel to this day has released 0 evidence showing the new Syrian government had any intentions to attack their positions in the Golan Heights. Israel broke a peace treaty and bombed civilians in a de-militarized zone i.e. committed a war crime on foreign soil.
Pleasant-Feeling-644@reddit
Broke what peace treaty ? Israel never had peace treaty with Syria they still at war from 1967 to this day. And no 1974 disengagement agreement doesn't say anything about peace or ceasefire
bosnanic@reddit
The Agreement on Disengagement between Israel and Syria, which was signed on May 31, 1974, provided for the continuation of the cease-fire already in effect and for the separation of opposing parties by a UN Peacekeeping Force.
Conducting a land invasion while bombing civilians is not upholding a cease-fire last time I checked. Israel broke a signed cease-fire and committed war crimes by targeting civlians.

adamgerd@reddit
And we ignore Iran’s funding and support of Hamas and Hezbollah for years before? Is that not an attack?
ProudJury6765@reddit

Easy_Structure1089@reddit
We usually ignore stuff that never happened. Basic Logic.
bosnanic@reddit
Akin to saying "France funds the LNA in the Libyan civil war therefore France is at war with Libya" that's not how it works, every nation in the world funds and supports interest groups including Israel who funds the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen or their very open support for one of the largest American lobbying groups the American Israel Public Affairs Committee and Christians United for Israel.
Is Israel directly influencing American foreign policy against Iran not an attack by the same messure?
adamgerd@reddit
Supporting an interest group in a country is equivalent to supporting terrorist groups against a country?
bosnanic@reddit
So France arming and training LNA forces in Libya means France is in a direct conflict with Libya by your logic? Is the USA in a direct war with Russia for funding and training Ukrainian soldiers? Is Israel at war with Yemen via funding the PLC?
You not understanding the difference between funding foreign groups and direct war is something.

Honestly most of EU are bunch of Israeli bootlickers. Disgusting and horrible that I can even call myself part of a union where most countries will cheer Russia out of the competition within a week but will stay quiet.
Specially Greece, all friendly there. I hope if a war with turkey breaks, that we DO NOT help them. They can ask their Israeli friends then
Then Germany... No words... But ofc they would be the strongest supporters.
And about the rest, a bit of the same. All are too afraid to stand up to trump and Bibi.
I'm proud of my Spanish heritage and disgusted by the British one. But that is nothing new
Financial-Loquat8386@reddit
Totally agree it's super gay.
h_Bad_4748@reddit
Eurovision is fake and gay. Good for them!

Slovenia acting like they even had a chance 😭, if anything at least less wack songs, Bosnia has the only acceptable reason 💪
the_TIGEEER@reddit
It's not about having a chance tbh. Everyone enjoys their country performaing in Eurovesion of the song is shit or not. I don't think I'll listen to it this year, it just doesn't feel the same with the Netherlands, Spain, and my country not participating.
Brafo22@reddit
Let’s be honest you’ll watch it, imo the countries that won’t participate because of Israel should not comeback until the leadership changes or else they will look like hypocrites , Israel will be Israel even next year and they sure will participate
Ancient-Ice-879@reddit
Let's be honest, all you can do is be dishonest as evident by lying about that Slovenian.
the_TIGEEER@reddit
Let's be honest I'll completly forget about it like I did many times before probabbly be out doing something else when it's on or playing video games. Then I just won't look it up afterwards like I usually did.
Peermeneer_exe@reddit
Historical moment, the Netherlands finally got called big💪💪💪🦁🦁🦁
the_TIGEEER@reddit
I kinda get what you're aiming at, but mate.. You're talking to a Slovenian..

Whole_Obligation_776@reddit
He is calling you a muslim because as we know, all proper christians go and fight for israel and lick its boots clean.
userrr3@reddit
Which is a hilarious dog-whistle for Muslims in this context because Jews are also famously not pig eaters.
Whole_Obligation_776@reddit
Eh classic far-right, it doesnt need to fit in a description and like a liquid it will just try to fill in a momentary-shape, doesnt matter if it makes sense or not, it is just there to exist and find a place in the spotlight.
The pig-eater thing from far right sometimes remind me that Adolf was reluctant to eat it too, and generally he was leading mainly a vegetarian diet, half due to his vegetarian views but other half due to a stomach ulcer or something. This was actually used in WWII in the Middle East by the German intelligence as part of a psy-op to generate popularity with Muslim populations living under French and British colonial rules at the time. They purposefully spread an urban legend about Adolf being a secret muslim, pretending to be a christian to rule germany to fight against Brits-French and Hebrews. The effect of this psy-op still surfaces from time to time in the middle east, especially during heightened probleem terms with Israel, and I think it is fair to say there are a lot of people in these countries that still believe in it. The same anti-floride schizos you might come across in Western internet circles have this version in the muslim majority communities in the East.
Peermeneer_exe@reddit
omg I totally forget that I had to fight in the holy land and kill brown children for Bibi since I'm from a Christian country, sorry for forgetting unknownpersonno🙏
unknownpersonno@reddit
I am against killing children and war, but what would you say about the mass terrorist attacks of muslims in Christmas Market! Why do they not directly attack israel but kill innocent people! Nevertheless is Netherland a Christian country anymore, you are covered in shit, stink everywhere. You are an arab country. Me was told i am muslim since i was born, but what i have in common with such a culture?!
Peermeneer_exe@reddit
I wanted to reply, but I feel like you've honestly gotten lobotomized by the Mossad to say this shit😭
I hope you get well soon and that Israel doesn't bomb the hospital you're recovering in🙏
Whole_Obligation_776@reddit
You are getting there, now go and steal some muslim or christian child's candy or something. Everybody has to start at some point. You can do it to a christian, as israel does it too, so your have a lot of options to choose amongst.
Peermeneer_exe@reddit
In all fairness, that children's candy was promised to Israel 3 thousand years ago
unknownpersonno@reddit
I am not a Christian, but judging by the matter of how involved is a religion, you still live in middle ages.
Whole_Obligation_776@reddit
I am an atheist, I am sure I would get a burning in both in europe and in today's Turkey in the middle ages so I am sure I dont ideolize that tim period, but keep trying schizoid.
PavelKringa55@reddit

I think more people should boycott it due to participation of the genocide-inflicting israelis
MartinBP@reddit

starxidiamou@reddit

Sounds like you’re the insane one.
Catman_192@reddit
Seriously, what is israel doing on eurovision, even if we exclude recent reasons, they are european on same level as some arab? Anyways most of the reasons actually sound reasonable for not participating.
f00dot@reddit
Wait, there is a COST to participate? We are paying to enter?....
PhantomO1@reddit
who do you think pays for everything? xD
f00dot@reddit
It does make sense but it still hurts.
Isn't there sth like EU culture budget?
PhantomO1@reddit
this is not an EU thing, as you can see from non-EU members participating
the EBU is an organization entirely separate from the EU
f00dot@reddit
Thanks for the clarification. I guess the name EUROvision tricked me...
74C5@reddit
For some public broadcasters the participation fee is lower than what they would have spent on an alternative tv program that they would have to produce otherwise if they didn’t take part.
If enough people watch the contest the revenue from advertisement alone could already be worth it. It’s why countries with very low interest like Slovakia withdrew because the low level of viewership didn’t make it cost-effective.
Holiday-Step9703@reddit
Broadcasters do
f00dot@reddit
Well on bulgaria the national TV is managing it so it's people's money after all
MartinBP@reddit
That's all countries, the EBU is a union of public broadcasters.
Holiday-Step9703@reddit
Oh yeah I presumed it's similar Europewide, it's the same in Serbia

It isn't. It's the decision of the public broadcaster, but still...respect to Slovenia, Spain, The Netherlands and Ireland.
74C5@reddit
A non-wanker prime minister would have acted like a dictator, taken control of the public broadcaster and abolished their participation at the contest by executive decree. /s

Why haven't you included kosovo?
Saalle88@reddit
Cause he included Serbia already.
dizzidevv@reddit
Kosovo isn't part of Serbia anymore, though. Not to the people living there.
Saalle88@reddit
Yes but if he is from the country that did not recognize Kosovo it makes no sense to put it separately.
dizzidevv@reddit
People don't need to represent their government. Kosovo is a country since 2008, according to the people inhabiting it. That should be respected.
Saalle88@reddit
Yes but its not a country to others that doesn't recognize it and people should respect that too.
dizzidevv@reddit
I feel as though not respecting it as a country is inherently disrespectful to its population, no?
Saalle88@reddit
Well i think this is not a question you should ask a Serb but im not gonna continue about this.
dizzidevv@reddit
I know. It's exactly why I'm bringing it up. Albanians have lived there for centuries(and according to geneology and linguistic analyisis, perhaps millennia), and even if this is "disputed", any right to it was lost when they tried to expel 1 million Albanians in '99. Why would they want their oppressors back?
Saalle88@reddit
Look, i dont hate Albanian or Kosovo people but we will never agree on this topic so i try to avoid going deeper into this subject.
Mother_Screen_7694@reddit
Well try going to Kosovo and you'll see
ComplicatedSunshine@reddit
From what I can see, Kosovo is not a member of the European Broadcasting Union, therefore it can't take part in Eurovision

_Caligulean_@reddit

danirijeka@reddit
The EBU is defined by the European Broadcasting Area of the ITU: East of the midatlantic, North of the 30th parallel North, West of the 40th meridian East, plus the three Caucasus countries.
As a result, Iraq is in the EBA, and so is the entire Mediterranean shore of Africa.
Then you have associate members that are not restricted geographically, like Canada and Australia.
Paithegift@reddit
That's also why Israel is eligible.
bleuberri_@reddit
i’m not completely sure, but i think the north african countries and lebanon have always been able to be in it they just never were bc of israel being in it. ik morocco and one other (i think tunisia) competed one year but that’s it.
MissSteak@reddit
Morocco competed one year in the 80s, Lebanon is the other one youre thinking about. They already chose their song and announced participation but then withdrew after some drama with the Israeli broadcaster. I believe in 2005.
David_Aaron_Finck@reddit

Eurovision turned into bullshit about 15 years ago. Now it is just a joke and I would prefer not to have public money be spent on it.
I also believe that boycotting Israel is the right thing to do.
Saalle88@reddit
Ok i wish Serbia didn't join the Eurovision due to being politically incorrect. Is this formuled fine enough for you guys or is this counting as "hate"?
Classic-Exit4189@reddit
I wish we didnt participate either.
UnderstandingCool574@reddit
I stopped watching after Türkiye decided not to participate anymore.
Also most have the same reason. I don't understand why they don't cancel that particular country. Look how many countries don't want to join because of them
the_TIGEEER@reddit
Its funded by them lol. It's been big drama in the recent years have you not heard? The whole Joost Klein - Netherlands thing?
UnderstandingCool574@reddit
I know there was something about Joost not wanting to go on stage before or after the Israeli singer. But like I said, I don't even follow it anymore since Türkiye stopped joining.
PavelKringa55@reddit
How are 3 North African countries not participating? They've never been to Eurovision in the first place. Why would they be in the Eurovision? Why don't they make their Africavision? They're not in Europe, like Australia.
ecosludge@reddit
They’ve always been eligible to join Eurasian since they’re in the EBU, but that have chosen not to to protest Israel. The only time Morocco performed was when Israel was not there.
FantasticQuartet@reddit (OP)
Morocco has participated once in 1980.
They are technically eligible because their national broadcasters are part of EBU
Saalle88@reddit
I wish Serbia decided not to go as well due to being politically decided already + too gay.
PVanchurov@reddit
I think that we should also come up with a bullshit reason to not participate, like "skill issue" or something along those lines. The song representing Bulgaria this year is ... derivative to say the least.
HotlineMiami_3@reddit
Israel is just a scapegoat
Brafo22@reddit
Because of Israel lmao, hopefully all those countries never come back or they will look like hypocrites, there are better ways of showing you are upset with Israel, for example last years winner should go to Palestine and perform a song, question is who will attack him first, Israel for being against them or Palestine because he’s queer, trash vs trash in other words
lara2412@reddit
North African countries participated when? Its misleading to say due to participation of Israel. They never even joined, even tho they can.
