Are car rental apps actually cheaper for a weekend?

Need a rental car for a weekend trip and thinking about trying a car rental app instead of the usual rental companies. Some of the listings look cheaper, especially if you want something unique or just need it for a short trip. But do the extra fees (insurance, cleaning, delivery, etc.) actually make it more expensive in the end? Anyone actually rent from a private owner for a short trip? Did you save money over a normal rental, or did all the fees make it a wash? Would love to hear some real stories before I book my first one this weekend.
