They can put all the cameras, sensors, and directional guide lines they want but I'll use old reliable eye 1 and eye 2 every time.

Got my license in '83 so 40+ years of checking my rear view and looking over my shoulder. It took quite a while to get used to using the reverse camera instead. But once it made clear that it was smarter than I was, I gave in.

Yeah, guilty. I've been driving since the 90s and only had a car with the cameras and sensors since the early 2020s so old habits die hard. I still love the cameras and the proximity sensors. Especially since they can detect when someone's rushing in on the freeway. But I still turn my head anyways.

Until I get cybernetic eyeballs that can record video that's admissible in court I'm sticking with my dashcams. Between the idiot delivery and service van drivers that do whatever they want and folks on their phones hands free or not I'll use every visual and sensor option I have available.

Got a backup camera and I did that just yesterday anyway. Saved me from an idiot flying down a parking lot lane. The cameras are there to help, not replace.

These days I use every tool available, but the camera is used gauge the distance to whatever is behind me. I have never looked over my shoulder, my driver's ed teacher was adamant about that. That was reinforced at my first job, a delivery driver. The truck had a camper shell so the rearview mirror was useless.

I don’t do the turn to back in, I properly position my side mirrors and use them to back into parking spots. Been doing it since I got my licence. Oh, and I drove a delivery truck as a young man, so being able to back up was very important. Should be part of the driving test, that and parallel parking.

Absolutely! Backed so many items behind said vehicle that was a trailer. Will admit to a steep learning curve for a “B “ train that was two trailers in a rom. One 32’ and one 28’. That was a challenge to back up around the corner to get out of our yard.

I use back up cameras. I use technology in general. I use AI. I am curious about the world around me. I enjoy learning about ways we can lessen the impact of technology on the environment. I enjoy listening to real people talk about their lives, younger generations telling me be about their struggles and old people telling me about theirs. In general, I let people make the mistakes ahead of me with new technology but then I jump in with both feet. I learn a bit about how it works, why it works, and then use it to get the full understanding. It generation doesn't have to be held back by old habits. That's a choice.

View on Reddit #81570511

If there is a backup camera, I use it. There are a fair number of cars on the road today without cameras, though, including one I have to drive occasionally. So I’m glad I have the skills to do it without a camera. (There is a whole tangent discussion here about when it’s appropriate to stop teaching a skill because modern tech means no one will never need to use it. Valid for both basic life skills and professional skills. But I digress…) I am more suspicious about the blind spot indicator on my side view mirror, because that depends on some sort of image analysis software which could glitch on me. So I always check the blind spot before changing lanes. Now, backing into a parking spot is a whole ‘nother argument. Unless you’re parallel parking, where backing is a necessary part of the process, of course. (Steps back with popcorn to watch ensuing debate).

Using what’s available is generally good but there are two families of exceptions: 1) not using a new tool until you’ve really got it knocked and not having time to master it at this point in your life, and 2) newer ways are usually more failure prone for quite a while, and you’re still the one responsible if your favorite tech happens to be unavailable.
View on Reddit #81440934

Look, if you need time to master a backup camera, you should not be operating all the other components of a motor vehicle. And, I suppose it is possible but I have never heard of an accident caused by a failed backup camera. I have definitely heard of many, many cases where someone drove over a kid because they lacked a full perspective of what was happening behind them. All that said, yes, you should never rely strictly on tech if you can also use your eyeballs.

Yup!  One place I occasionally park at has me parking nose in and backing out onto a usually-not-very-busy road.  Our car has a feature where it will somehow sense that a car is coming from the side but isn’t yet in view of any of the cameras … and our car will emit a warning beep inside the cabin.   Most of the time we don’t have to use this as we reverse into most parking spots, but occasionally it isn’t easy or feasible to do so.

Because cameras eventually fail? Because poor weather conditions can render cameras unusable? Because thinking people don't depend upon technology to do every last thing for them? As I said above - I'm not a Luddite. I've built every desktop system I've owned in the last 30 years and maintain our home network. I'm tech support for the entire family, from desktops to laptops to tablets and smartphones. I'm also smart enough to realize that tech breaks down and that rational humans shouldn't rely solely upon tech to think for them. As a matter of fact, my backup camera on my 2015 Expedition has taken a crap and is under recall. Apparently, I shouldn't be driving it because the little 4" screen isn't working, and we have to rely on tech these days to live, lol. My new-to-me 2024 Prius is the only other car with a backup camera we own. Three other vehicles don't have a camera, nor the fancy adaptive cruise control, lane change sensors, or any other new "safety" features. Despite such handicaps, my son - who drives a 2011 Silverado - can back up trailers like a pro...better than me, truth be told. My wife and I can parallel park the Expedition in downtown areas of large cities - and could do our Excursions, too. Hell, the only I use a rear camera is if I'm hooking a trailer up and that doesn't happen in the Prius. It's just tech, people. Our generation has grown up with it...but don't start letting it replace your brain.

I guess your cars are mostly pretty old then? Or you're not in the US? > Since May 1, 2018, all new cars, SUVs, trucks, and vans under 10,000 pounds GVWR must include a rear visibility system (backup camera) as required under Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 111. I haven't had a car without a rear camera for probably over 20 years. And I haven't had a rear camera fail in any car, though I have had them get covered in snow. Point is that it doesn't seem like a skill that needs to be on the driver's test. I'd rather they focus more on safety skills than whether someone can parallel park without a rear camera. I could probably come up with a dozen skills I'd rather see people demonstrate.
View on Reddit #81451016

Even worse, I drive a manual car, and use my mirrors and my brain to reverse park or parallel park. It’s all instinct at this point, and I don’t want to lose that ability. I have a reverse camera but I ignore it. It’s also a nervous Nellie and starts frantically beeping before I even get close to anything. I’d say half the time I get valets who can’t park my car because they don’t know how to drive a geared car. And the rest of the time I get a delighted grin because they do know how to drive a manual but don’t get the chance often.

America being bizarro world again. In my country it is encouraged to reverse into a bay because you can see oncoming cars and pedestrians more easily when driving out of the bay rather than reversing. Plus it keeps the wheels that do the steering at the end where there's more room so it's overall actually easier to reverse in than to reverse out.

I was kind of wondering if someone would mention this. It takes a while to get used to constantly comparing all the mirrors plus the screen but once you get the hang of that, it’s faster and more confident than either by itself. (This is even truer for parallel parking, I found out eventually). YMMV I’m sure; if you’ve been successfully backing in 20’ trucks on just the mirrors, or sports cars on just the cameras, for years, there probably isn’t much improvement available from adding one more tool

I'm also not sure I'm allowed to rely on technology *legally*, as it were, or that I should. Like we hear of people driving into lakes because GPS told them to, or whatever...I don't think people should ever rely 100% on technology to do their thinking for them, and if they do and something goes wrong, it'll still be on them when it's time to face the music for it.

I completely rely on the back up and overhead cameras. Trust the technology, you trust it with your engine and collision sensors, why not trust it, its a camera, what's it gonna do lie to you? Also, I refuse to buy a car without a lane change sensor, it's a god send. Anything that saves your from taking your eyes from straight ahead is a safety feature.
View on Reddit #81383654

FamiliarAnt4043@reddit

Alternatively, you could learn situational awareness. While tech is great, it's not infallible. I don't want machines doing my thinking for me. Tools that assist are fine, but moat people will start relying on them instead of using their brain. Before the screams of "heretic" and "Luddite" start coming from the crowd - I'm the guy that has built every desktop he's owned for the last 30 years and maintains his own home network. I'm tech support for my family and even at work sometimes. So, it's not that I don't like tech, it's that I recognize it as a tool to be used...but not one to be replied upon completely. Situational awareness is a much better tool when driving than any lane change sensor, lol.

I use my backup camera 100% of the time, and I’m 73 years old. What you see is what you get. It’s not like it’s a movie where it might pause or lag behind. It is real life. If you see space between you and the next car that you’re backing up to, that means there’s a space there.

This. And frankly, the cameras give a better view than turning around. My last car had the spare tire on the trunk, partially boxing the rear window, you couldn't see anything that was down low. The car behind you when parallel parking? Basically invisible. The backup camera shows an unobstructed wide view, including down to the ground, if there is a ball or kid coming. And the magic "overhead" cameras show me, the lines, and the cars next to me, while backing into a spot. All while looking at the same thing, vs checking behind, then left, then right, and now something came in behind you. The mirrors are still good, but they simply can not show as much of the space around your car. Blind spots are a thing. Now, I will still turn and look before changing lanes, in addition to the mirrors.

I back into spots and do it far from a store entrance so it’s less crowded and I don’t hold anyone up. I use my camera regularly but yes, there’s a different and nostalgic level of comfort backing up using only my own eyes.

When I got my first vehicle with a backup cam a few years ago I thought there would be no way I'd ever use it and it would be way too disorienting. I was surprised how wrong I was! I back into my garage and have to make a tight 90° turn with a long-ish truck to get in there and the backup cam made it so much easier than relying on my mirrors or eyeballing it.

View on Reddit #81352421

LangdonAlg3r@reddit

I’ve adopted a hybrid approach. I start out looking over my shoulder as I’m rounding into a space and then I use the camera to line the car up perfectly straight. It would be an absolute nightmare getting into my garage without that thing. There are about 3” of clearance between the bumper and the garage door. I have a vertical mark on the back wall to line up left to right and I line up the red guide mark on the backup camera to the center of the bottom step into the house—perfect every time. I line up perfectly equidistant between the lines in parking lots every time too. I use it as an assistant and not a replacement for the skills I already have.
View on Reddit #81354136

Fudloe@reddit

I can see that being useful if you can adjust to the camera's image. But I find them disorienting due to the odd perspective and fisheye lens effect. I just don't find a camera to be as accurate a view as simply turning around. Sure wish they were an extra, not standard. I hate paying for something I'll never use. That's why I don't own a treadmill.
View on Reddit #81354443

LangdonAlg3r@reddit

It took me a long time to adjust to turning the wheel the correct way while using one, since you turn the wheel one way while moving forward and the opposite way while moving backwards. It was brain breaking at first to try to face forward and not turn the wheel like I was moving forwards. A lot of cars have overhead views now. That’s what I use in parking spaces. But in the garage I know exactly where the guide marks are supposed to line up, so that’s easy. But I totally understand what you mean by the fisheye. It kinda depends on how fancy the car is. Ours isn’t super fancy, but it’s a Toyota and we got the “platinum” package with all the bells and whistles because it was the first new car we’d bought in like 15 years and we were upgrading from analog everything so it was exciting to get all the things. The heads up display is what sold me on the fancy package and it was worth every penny. It projects my speed onto the windshield and it scans all the road signs so I always have the speed limit and my actual speed directly in front of me without ever having to look down. But every once in a while I’ve had to drive my dad’s truck and trying to navigate the fisheye on that is a nightmare.

Yeah, I usually prefer to not pull through or back into a spot because with the fish eye view I can see up and down the lane before I even start backing out. If my sedan is parked between two SUVs and I have to pull forward, I have to get my nose several feet out into the lane before I can see anything coming from the left.
View on Reddit #81354182

GenXist@reddit

Right?!? With all due respect to OP, I'm sitting here thinking that neither eye one nor eye two are *nearly* as reliable as they once were (and that's with the assistance of corrective lenses). I'm in NO position to turn down the assisting technology I've paid for - especially since they haven't made it contingent upon a monthly subscription (yet).
View on Reddit #81354147

ispshadow@reddit

I don't back into spots (like a Walmart/Target) because then everybody in the lane both directions has to wait for me to finish what I'm doing. No matter how good you are at backing up, you're not parking as fast as someone just pulling in forwards. You have to pull forward, change gears, reverse, put the car in the spot the way you want. I just turn and stop where I'm good. I know you'll say it's safer because when you leave you just drive away. I get it. I really do. I just wait until the lane is completely clear so I don't have to worry about traffic. My rear camera handles that job really well and I don't like forcing other people to wait on me. They have things to do too.

View on Reddit #81339350

Can you explain why people backing into parking spots is a problem?
View on Reddit #81340848

jgray6000@reddit

Because they hold everything up by swinging over to one side, then slowly inching their way back, then pulling forward again, then back, then forward, then back. And I know, everyone on here taking offense to this can do it in one smooth motion and it takes 2 seconds total. But that’s not how it works in real life, it takes forever. Then people who have backed in and are now obstructed by larger vehicles, pull straight out and damn near hit you because there’s no reverse lights letting you know someone is attempting to pull out. And then there’s the people who justify taking 10 fucking minutes to back into a spot by saying it’s so much faster to leave. I just wonder what you’re doing at Costco on a Wednesday that requires such a quick getaway Dom Toretto. There is no valid point to it if you’re not doing it for loading or unloading a truck or something. Anyone doing it in the Applebees parking lot is just a selfish dickhead who craves attention.

View on Reddit #81339659

mustang-and-a-truck@reddit

I do it in my truck (in tight places) because reverse is more maneuverable. Think about it like this, you get the tail into the area that it needs to be in, then you swing the front end of the truck around so that you have a straight line. Of course, that makes the reverse true so getting out can be harder.

Backup cameras are a useful tool but absolutely no substitute for your eyes taking in the entire larger scene. No back up camera is going to see a kid on a bike, scooter or running in from the side until they're literally already behind your car. There's a reason that I've promised to buy my daughter her first car. On the condition that it's not an automatic, no gadgets, no voice crap, no backup cameras, no lane control, no blind-spot indicators, etc. You can buy all that once you've been driving for a while, they're driving aids. But they are absolutely NO substitute to being in the habit of looking where you're going and being comfortably in control of the entire vehicle. And, yes, you'll learn manual first. Because if you can drive manual, with the extra coordination and brain-processing required to do so, then you'll be able to drive anything AND you'll have spare brain capacity when you do so.

I cannot see those things without my reading glasses though. And I can’t drive with reading glasses on. I rented a car that had a full time camera for a rear view, like you mentioned; couldn’t use it without pushing my head back against the headrest. I felt old.

Same. My car turns the rear view mirror into a camera instead of just changing the angle when you flip the switch. So at night I have to choose between being blinded by the 1.21 jiggawatt high beams behind me or having a functional mirror because it’s too close to my face haha

They are just an added tool to back up safer, not a replacement for your mirrors or turning to look. They most useful in getting close to a wall or another cars bumper. I can see my bumper and their bumper when backing up. It is also very useful for centering the car in a parking spot. But you need to use your side mirrors and actually looking behind you.

So after I got my first car with the BU cameras, I was talking with my brother-in-law who said I should never trust the camera 100% and continue to look around. Seemed like sound advice. Two days after I adopted this new policy, I backed into someone. Fortunately, the divot in their bumper popped out, so no damage to either car. Since then, I’m 100% camera. People should do what they’re comfortable with, but it’s the equivalent of people 30 years ago saying they would never email because I can just call someone. My cameras do both rear view and overhead (driving a Chevy Bolt) and have alarms if I’m getting too close to something. Way superior to the human eyes. Also, just keep in mind that “This durn technology, I don’t trust it” would be ridiculed coming out of a Boomer’s mouth.

The 360 (overhead) camera just can’t be beat.  I love it!  My truck (Ford Expedition) offers both overhead and rearview cameras while backing up.  I don’t even look out the back window anymore.  I don’t see much when I do anyways because my SUV stands so high many obstacles can’t be seen out the window anyways.

ALWAYS physically look behind you when backing. Don't rely solely on the cameras, especially the backup camera. The camera is usually mounted around license plate level, so it doesn't show things up high. I found this out while backing into a space in an older parking garage. There were pipes running along the wall, up high. Going in head first would've worked because of the lower clearance. Pipes punctured the rear window of my SUV, Totally my fault for relying only on the cam to backup, it looked clear.

So another think of the children law to force a product into the market. I'll explain. Back in the late 90s the camera-radar systems were in their infancy. Some trucking companies I worked with were paid to volunteer their rigs to test them. The radar boxes were big as laptops on the sides of the vehicle but kept getting smaller as tech advanced. Obviously lobbyists paid off enough of congress and one of them found a poster child to title the bill.

Or, if people are walking. And maybe to see if I’ve backed in enough to be in the spot and not far enough to not be able to open the hatch. I hate the lines that steer but my wife likes them on hers. You can just use both you know. It's not like this is an either or situation. In fact it's better if you use ALL tools available all the time. 37 years of using mirrors and hugging the passenger seat as I park has led to an inability to look at the screen in the centre of the dash. My car doesn’t have any cameras but whenever I drive one that does, I forget about it and muscle memory goes into action. My limited experience of these cameras has also highlighted the fact that they’re easily covered in road grime and difficult to see through without getting out and wiping a thumb across it. I’ll stick with my mirrors and Mk1 eyeball.

Agreed. The reason they exist is they can catch small children who you can't see through the back window. I believe the impetus for the law was a child who was either killed or severely injured. not me, man. The rear camera is like a cheat code for those of us who grew up with traditional parallel parking with mirrors. I'll eyeball it to start but then the camera lets you get 2 inches away from the car behind you. Makes it so much easier to pull into tight spots, and quicker.

The camera feels like tunnel vision when I use them. If it’s a 26 foot truck I’m really glad to have it. But my cat and pickup don’t have one and I don’t miss it. I do wish my jeep had one because the spare tire blocks so much. But the over the shoulder method works well and I feel more comfortable backing up quickly when not using a camera. Part of that is definitely because of the learning the technique decades ago and it just being muscle memory, just move your hand the way you want to go.

Leverage and tension muscle easing. Try turning your neck and back to look back while keeping your arm at your side, and then do it again but with the motion of putting your arm on the seat head. At least for me, it relieves all that tension in the upper back and neck, and allows you to better make that movement without putting needless tension.
