If you're part of your diaspora, how well do you get alone with the people from your parents' country?

Well, we’re usually much more similar than nationalists like to make us believe, sister 😊 Overall, I think I do understand why these things happen. Diaspora communities often end up going in one of two directions. Either people grow up largely outside the influence of the motherland and are shaped mostly by the culture of the country they live in, or they become very attached to the idea of the motherland that their ancestors carried with them when they left. In that second case, they sometimes preserve traditions, habits, and views that were common decades ago, almost frozen in time. The result is that, while the connection and pride are very real and often very heartfelt, there can also be a bit of a gap in understanding how things have actually evolved back home over the years. Societies change, attitudes shift, and everyday life moves on, but that isn’t always visible from the outside. I’ve even had a Greek-Australian once insist that they were “more Greek than me” when I pointed some of these things out, which I found a bit ironic. But at the same time, I try to see it as a reflection of how strongly people in the diaspora can feel about their roots and identity. It just sometimes comes with a slightly different (and, I'm sorry, I'll say it: ignorant) perspective from that of people who actually live here.
