Hey, I live in the Burbank area and looking to get my PPL. Overwhelmed by the number of flight schools out of Van Nuys, I'd love to hear recommendations. I've heard good things about Ascent Aviation, ActivePILOT, Corsair, and Clipper. I've been told to stay away from Essence Flight Academy. Any thoughts would be much appreciated

I did my PPL at VNY back in 2018. And CFI'd there on and off through the last couple years.
Active Pilot, LA flight school, Corsair flight school seem to have ok reputations. Ascent came up during the pandemic and blossomed (but my take was they were always riding a wave, and had a bit of a cowboy approach. Allen their Mx guy was the only thing keeping them afloat).
I suggest, visit each of the schools, get a tour, get quotes on prices, mx, and scheduling availability for not only training but for DPE availability (probably most important). Talk to the students, see what they say in front of school staff. See what they say NOT in front of school staff. You will get the more honest review when you talk to a current student on a 1on1 interaction with no staff present. -other big tips, really avoid schools that want you to pay for a whole license in advanced. Ideally you want a school that would be pay as you go. Some block time purchases of 10hrs here and there is ok. Do as much preparation and studying WAYY before you even pay for a flight school, such as accomplishing an online ground school and/or accomplishing your PPL written before you even step into a flight school as a paying customer. --last but not least, remind yourself, you are the customer at the end of the day. You are the one paying like $300+/hr for training. If they arnt doing their part, you can always switch instructors or flight schools. Training is a 2 way street, you need to do your part and study too. They cant or wont spoon feed you everything either.
Encore flight school died (thank god) around the pandemic.

Thanks for your detailed response. I've already started studying. I got myself an Airplane Flying Handbook that I'm working through. I didnt know you could do your PPL written before starting flight school. How does that work? I've heard Encore has rebranded as Essence and is still active!

Yea absolutely can do the PPL written before. The only minor thing you will run into is that you need a endorsement from a CFI to take the written. Most CFIs generally want to see a like above 90% on a three practice tests to give you a sign off. But again if avaition is brand brand new to ya, looking into an online ground course may be worthy (Kings school, Gleim, and i forgot the others). PPL written is good for two years.
Lol. That is news to me on Encore/Essence, and shows I havnt been at VNY in a minute. Still stay away from Alex if hes still running the show.

Hi I just did my discovery there today and lowkey Alex gave me bad vibes but I overall thought it was a good school with a cheaper program and signed with them. How bad did I fuck up?

Lets ask you again in 3 months and find out...

Stay far away from LA flight academy, not only do they overcharge but the school and owner are in a lawsuit for fraud

Get your PPL with Vista Aviation at Whiteman. You’ll save a ton.

Clipper is for the doctors and lawyers who got cirrus money to burn. So yea, probably not necessarily in everyones budget. But if you high roller, sure.

I think I’d look at KWHP (Whiteman) first. Much less busy and probably less expensive schools there, and still using the same practice area.
