Here's a fun little story about cologne. Highschool Valentine's Day dance, 1994. A young SerHermann heads out in his finest double denim outfit and doused in Gravity. He meets up with a classmate, Wendy (RIP, you were an awesome weirdo). Wendy: What's that smell? SerHermann: it's called Gravity. Do you feel an inexplicable, yet irresistible attraction toward me? Wendy: hey you know what, you should go talk to her (points to a random girl on the other side of the hall) The other girl and I will be married 25 years this winter. She hated the cologne and told me to stop wearing it but I recently learned that she kept the bottle.

As a 55 yo woman, the mere whiff of Polo reminds me of make-out sessions like nothing else does. I will smell it in a crowd and seek out who wears it. That being said, I dislike cologne in general because both men and women simply use too much of it. You want a subtle scent that someone may notice when you walk by or during a close conversation, not something that smacks people in the face from across the room. With cologne less is definitely more👍🏻

Paloma Picasso and Lauren were my perfumes of choice in the ‘80s. Lauren got reformulated beyond recognition and then discontinued…vintage bottles of it are crazy expensive now. No. I used to wear Estée Lauder Cinnabar because a sales rep at the job I worked in my mid-20s would offer the staff a bottle of any choice of scent they wanted for the holidays. It was always nice stuff so it must have been a tax write-off or something. 😏 I wore the same scent for a few years after I left that job. Kept wearing it for years as I liked it, and many women, girlfriends, and randoms over the years would tell me I smelled good, so I thought why mess with a good thing. Once I started dating the women I married, she didn't like it, and would buy me other colognes. Never got a compliment after that. 5 years ago, got divorced, decided to go buy a bottle of Polo green. Now back to getting compliments.

No. I didn't wear cologne as a kid or in college. I never had the money for it. If it was a special occasion I had a bottle of English Leather. I don't know if they make that anymore. I bought my first bottle of real cologne after my divorce; Cool Water. It's an old bottle and doesn't last very long anymore but I still have it. My wife likes it. About two years ago I got into fragrances and now I have like a dozen.

Sometimes I'll buy a few ounces of the first one: Lagerfeld. It wasn't that popular in the States even in it's hay day of the 80s. When I have some, I'll put it on for certain occasions or specific persons. Since it's uncommon, it's special to me. Not overpowering, fragrant.
