Why are buses late even when you’re at the first stop?

Late inbound, most buses shuttle back and fourth all day with not much waiting at each end, so if it gets late it can stay behind for hours

Also, on some routes in different parts of the country, a bus may do multiple routes. So while there may not be roadworks delaying your specific route, the bus may be coming from elsewhere that does have roadworks. For example, in Mansfield, Notts, there's a bus that goes from Mansfield up to Sutton in Ashfield. But Mansfield is the middle waypoint. The bus goes from Sutton to Mansfield then on to Mansfield Woodhouse, then back to Mansfield and then back to Sutton. So anyone wanting to go from Mansfield to Sutton comes up to complain about it being late. You try to tell them that there's roadworks causing delays. And they stand there arguing that there's no roadworks between Mansfield and Sutton and the bus shouldn't be late. But there's roadworks in Woodhouse. Similar with the 23 to Langwith and 12 to Shirebrook. Roadworks in one place can also cause issues due to the driver of one of those buses going over their driving hours due to delays, and needing to take their break before going out on a completely different run. For example, a driver who has done 2 trips to Nottingham and back gets stuck in roadworks which puts them over their hours. But their next run goes to Edwinstowe. Now that Edwinstowe bus is late because the driver is on a break. This is legally required and the bus company cannot force the driver to go back out on the road. Most of these delays are ultimately caused by bus companies running on minimal buses and staff numbers to cut costs.

Is there any way to prevent buses being late in London, or is it just too big a city ? As a parent it’s impossible to rely on them when you need them. A journey that should have taken 14 -20 minutes max, today took 45 minutes. I honestly wonder if it’s better to just drive even though I live central…and this just contributes to the problem.

I mean, it's impossible to prevent buses (or cars etc) being late anywhere - sometimes traffic happens, and you can't do anything about it. You could have a private chauffeur take you everywhere and you still might hit traffic. As others have said, buses don't spawn at the beginning of the route - unless you're taking the first bus of the day, both the driver and the bus have to complete the previous route.

If you think buses in London are bad, try catching a bus anywhere else in the country...

Yeah we can't prevent this up north either and we have multiple private companies to deal with on top.

Unless it's the first journey that the bus has done that day it might be late on the inbound service.

Even if it's the first journey of the day. The driver is not paid to turn up early and run checks on the bus. So the driver will turn up on time and do their checks. If they find any issues and need it fixed, or a replacement bus, that can cause a delay. I used to work customer service at a bus station and we would see this happen every month or so on the first run of the day. Driver starts shift at 5am and is paid from 5am. Checks only take a couple of minutes, and they're supposed to leave the depot and go to the bus station that's half a mile down the road, and start the route at 05:20. But if there's any issues that requires a new bus they can't just take it without telling someone, as that new bus could be for another run. So they have to call the on-call supervisor who will then decide if the issue can be fixed within time, or a new bus needed, and which bus to take.

Because they don't appear out of nowhere at first stop ready to go?

Do you think busses spawn at the first sport instead of going around and around?

Obviously they spawn, I saw one appear out of nowhere, you explain that

Or is it leaving early? My mum lives by the first stop and they always seem to leave a couple of minutes early which is really annoying until you know and make sure you get there a bit early. Presumably its because they know traffic will hold them up further down the route.

I’d study it for a week, record the times and lodge a complaint so they check cctv and update bus timetables accordingly or caution the drivers to stop that practice

They were late on the other half of their route. Bus routes are circular, they don't send a fresh bus out each time.

Depends how far the first stop is from the actual depot? Late leaving? Traffic?

drivers get a ten minute break at the end of their route. If they arrive late, they still get that break. It annoys me that there is no driver waiting for them to arrive and take the bus out immediately. If you get the 188 from Tottenham Court Road (the start of the route) to North Greenwich, the bus will start late and then stop at Waterloo for a driver change.. why can't they just have that new driver at the beginning???

Koda614@reddit

Unless you're talking about the first bus of the day, your bus will have previously been running another route (or the same route in the other direction) before turning around. Usually there's a little space in the timetable to allow for late running and a quick driver change but even so that's still only going to be 5-10 minutes. So if the last service was running more than that behind, or the driver has been forced to take a break due to their driving hours hitting the limits then the next one will be late too.

Bus companies are fined if the fail to run the first service but not fined if it is late.

Traffic?

I-Am-James@reddit

Driver overslept, maintenance issue at the depot, traffic issues on the way to the first stop, could be anything.
View on Reddit #80982390

AllThatIHaveDone@reddit

Because the bus left the depot late? They don't just spawn in at stop 1 of the route, ready to go 😂
