35 years on minivans, the perfect vehicle for location photographers with tons of expensive gear to keep safe and dry.
Drove Dodge, Plymouth, and Chrysler minivans for decades until I had enough of poor quality and got my first Honda Odyssey, which has spoiled me rotten. It's 10 years old/new and will be my last vehicle I will own. Love it - it's soooo comfy!
Plus it has a sunroof, my first hole in the cieling since 1984 and the t-tops in my '77 Trans Am. So yeah, some muscle car guys do grow up to trade comfort for speed!
All of mine lost transmissions right after the warranty expired.
We're in Florida, so a lot of UV, but everyone of our Chrysler vans (beige, green, gold, and white) all had major paint issues including top surfaces all fading and bad clearcoat. Also had one where all the roof paint blew off the van in large pieces that were swirling around my van in a car wash dryer.
The air conditioning always failed, so even in Florida summer, I got used to the windows down. I even noticed other vans on super hot days with their windows down too.
my first one was a 91 model, xmission planetary gear blew up at about 150k miles. Second one was a 95 (?), ugly as sin but dead solid reliable. Xmission got stuck in second after I was in a collision. This egg shaped 05 model, the xmission is still hanging in there and most of the power stuff still works. AC blew cold right up to the end on the other 2 and also this one, although I had to have the condenser replaced after hitting a deer.
Useful hauler, for sure.
An old boss had an original 84 he bought new, had old and money so he maintained perfectly and on the factory schedule.
Last time I drove his van in 97, he had over 300k on the darn thing. It hauled 6 adults and towed a 4x5 trailer loaded with heavy gear. It drove fine, and the little 4 cylinder got amazing mileage.
Ice cold air repair and 1 transmission were his major things beyond all the manufacturers' recs.
I had a Sienna, v6, well it was my family's car, the thing was surprisingly fast! Loved that thing. Didn't know about the timing belt and it blew up on me at 260k miles. I was a teenager still, with what I know now, it would've been running still
Mine is setup to work out of fully packed out too!
I cant post pics here or I would show it.
I did a job in Montana in a Log Mansion in an exclusive resort and they used AWD Siennas to get Housekeeping to the house and I knew right then that I had to find one!
Itās too bad some of the Japanese models of minivans have never made it to the U.S. You can get the 25 y/o models as they are exempt from U.S. standards, but the current models over there are really cool. Donāt put off soccer mom vibes at all. Thereās also a little Suzuki SUV (like an updated Samurai) over there that would be awesome to have here.
Not everyone needs a minivan, but the people who try to cram their family into an SUV when a minivan would be the far more logical option just drive me nuts.
I was at a ski trip and the mountain had a flash snow where it got all the exit traffic got stuck because numerous cars didn't have AWD. I'll never look at the sheer panic and worry on this dad's face with his kids in a minivan that couldn't go up the hill with everyone pushing and it kept going backwards to hit the car behind which also had nowhere to go.
People are drawn to SUVs for the better safety as well
And my point was not to bash SUVs as a vehicle choice, but instead to call out the people who would be better served by a minivan but choose an SUV for no practical reason whatsoever, basically sacrificing comfort, safety, cargo space, etc. for the express purpose of not being seen driving a minivan.
SUVs are great vehicles, just like pickup trucks, but people who choose them for vanity reasons are the ones who drive me crazy.
I think we know what each other is saying. Keep in mind, AWD always works, not just in rain or snow. I just got an AWD for the first time and it's amazing because my front wheels just don't spin out anymore.
Totally agree. I love my wife's minivan and I am someone who hates SUVs. Minivans typically have similar or better amenities and interior space compared to 3-row SUVs, ride nicely, and are supremely practical. Only downsides are social perception (IDGAF personally), wind noise, and what I call the "minivan effect".
The "minivan effect" is like when you go to pass someone slower and they speed up with you. It is that but now increase the % of people who do this to you ten-fold due to you being in a minivan. Sort of annoying, but not the end of the world.
We are coming up on 200k miles on our Odyssey and haven't had any major issues. People talk about the timing belt a bunch, but tinkering with cars is one of my hobbies so it wasn't a big deal. It is time consuming, I will concede that.
This is how I ended up with an Odyssey. We looked at a bunch of three row SUVs first, and didnāt love any of them. One of the dealers we visited had a great deal on an Odyssey and we decided it couldnāt hurt to test drive it. Best car buying decision Iāve ever made.
I love our Odyssey. I thought we'd never be able to afford one with the features we wanted, but my wife found a used one that was a great deal. Such a nice vehicle!
Yeah, minivans rock. We got a minivan when we had two kids and my wife literally cried because we were now minivan people. We traded our second Grand Caravan for an SUV after both kids left home. I figured my wife would be happy to no longer be a minivan person. So, so wrong. One of her stated reasons is that we can't fit a 4x8 sheet of plywood in an SUV. One of the many reasons I know i married well 35 years ago. We will be getting a minivan as our next vehicle, just not a Stellantis.
We have Opel Zafira from 2004, my uncel had VW Sharan from same year, their friend had Mazda MPV. Perfect family carriers. A lot of space in the front, in the back and also a lot of space in the boot!
And to be fair, some of the minivans looks fucking sick!
A while ago, there was a pop-up auto history museum thing in my area. There were the usual traditionally cool cars there as well as one minivan: The first ever 1984 Plymouth Voyager.
No one there was just casually interested in it. People were either utterly indifferent to it, confused by its presence in the first place, or completely and utterly enthralled. Lee Iacocca was a fucking genius, and I'm not talking about anything he did at Ford.
Minivans have a reputation that they are not āmasculineā, but they are utilitarian and often the right tool for the right job. I canāt think of anything more masculine-ideal than selecting a vehicle not based on identity but based purely on utility.
Yep. My brother in law ran his own little cabinetry buisiness. His truck died, and my parents gifted him their old minivan. While he hated it for a long while, it ended up growing on him. Can transport many cabinets in a dry climate controlled interior. Could tow a trailer for larger installations.
Can even fit full 4x8 sheets of plywood in the back (although when carrying many, sometimes have to tie a rope from the door latch to the latch thing, with the tailgate open a crack)
He definitely would still prefer a truck of course. But he hates it less than he did at the start, it has done everything needed. (Yeah, truck is more convenient in many ways, it is akward to crawl around the inside of a minivan while moving bulky cabinets around)
It's the butt end of many jokes. I've been in construction (masonry) for 25+ years and it's always been puzzling to me the number of tradesmen who, from a utilitarian, functional stand point, should be driving a mini van, but instead are driving lifted SUVs or pickup trucks or some such non sense. Those might make sense for certain types of work but when I see a trim carpenter trying to jam all their stuff under the hard tonneau cover of their lifted ram3500 it's sort of a head scratcher.
I've been driving one for 10 years. The seats all fold down so I can use it for work and when the weekend hits I can put up the seats to bring others on trips to the mountains. When you can fit a sheet of drywall or plywood in a heated area and not have to worry about tying it down or rain that is a bonus.
If any other manufacturer made a rear wheeled drive car, with a turbocharged engine making 315 horsepower, and was charging "nice Camry" prices for it.. it would probably be universally loved.
But because it has a pony symbol on it, everyone roasts it as "not a real mustang" and other stupid sayings that suggests it's a shitty car because it doesn't have a V8 in it.
As a Mustang guy I donāt look down on Ecobeasts but itās definitely a different class of car than the 5.0 or better trims. Nothing wrong with it at all, just not the same. That said, I will hate on the Mustang Mach E. They had no business putting a Mustang badge on that thing.
They should have just called it the Mach E, and leave the mustang off the name. They could have even used that unique Mach mustang font somewhere if they want , and keep the triple tail lights as an homage, but putting a pony on it is just an odd choice imo.
Probably an unpopular opinion.. but I think they should have brought Mach E in as the new Ford Thunderbird. Itās an EV and creative play on the name. You also donāt piss off the Mustang fan base.
My brother had a Mustang II when I was a kid, he ended up putting a v8 in it before he traded it for a 68 convertible. Lots of good memories for me so I have no problems with that having the pony. Prob also why Iām a fan of my HPP ecoboost now. There is some room for love under the pony badge. But I draw the line at the Mach E.
I contend the Mach E is WAY better than any Mustang fan assumed it was. Itās the nicest interior and fit and finish Iāve seen in ANY FoMoCo product.
I mean, those are nice for sure. But I'm pretty sure the Lexus and the BMW have a much higher MSRP than an Ecoboost. Shame about the Q50 being discontinued in North America.
I guess my "universally loved" statement might have been an exaggeration, though. Based on that.
I agree with you but they would be a lot cooler if they didn't sound like shit. there are a few inline 4s out there that sound decent out there and despite the noise being a huge selling point for muscle/pony car buyers ford didn't even fuckin try with the ecoboost.
I think the problem is the weight. The mustang chassis was designed for the almost 500hp of the v8, and even with the eco boost itās still almost 4000lb.Ā
Kind of goes for all base model muscle cars. V6 Stangs, Camaros, Challengers, etc. All pack waaay more oomph than the average economy car and are substantially more affordable than their V8 equivalents, especially after factoring in insurance and fuel. And people act like they're slower than minivans just because better trim exists.
Back in the foxbody years they had the SVO, a 2.3 L Turbocharged Mustang, sound familiar? I hate those "not a real mustang" comments so fucking much becuase they don't know ANYTHING about Mustang history
I grew up disliking Mustangs. Not for any valid reason, just the simple 'it's not the car my friends and I like' type of reason.
The ecoboost is what actually got me looking into getting a Mustang. There was one thing that was left out, it has independent rear suspension! A solid rear axle is really only attractive to drag racers, which ironically, is what they likely mostly be used for.
It's really one of the best rear wheel drive manual cars out there today. Sure there are things here there that other cars do better, but at this point there isn't a clear winner unless you spend double the money.
I've always owned German cars, my whole life and I feel like I'm coming out of the closet when I say I really enjoy how the new Mustang look in the cars that they've become.
Ngl tho if it was a rwd Camry with that kinda power itād probably handle a lot better, and I know mustangs got better handling over the past decade but itās not great either
C8 was very tempting, but out of my budget this time around.
I wanted something with 2 doors that I actually fit in and was RWD. Had a Challenger several years ago, looked at a 23 Scat pack, but wanted to buy new.
Why do you wanna buy new? Itās such a rip off. You coulda got a low mileage c7 or that 23 scat, like even if you plan of keeping it forever itās not like 1 owner could do that much damage in under 30k miles.
40k out the door for a loaded ecoboost convertible with full warranty. 45k for the loaded 23 scatpack, and never liked the C7s. C2s and early C3s catch my attention, but beyond that the C8 is the first newer Vette that has really made me look at them.
I think the scat is better tbh but whatever I guess, you seem like youāre not looking for the most bang for your buck youāre more so looking for the most practical car. But then wouldnāt the scat still have the nicer interior and more features?
Scat was on par, but Stellantis quality knocks it down a peg or 2. It had some of the same features, but it had the alcantara seats instead of leather. The Mustang definitely had more features.
Ahh ok fair, fuck it then man Aslong as you like it. I still love v8s I donāt think I could get an ecoboost mustang, Iād def have to go with a c7 if I had 45k$ but thatās just me. I donāt race and itās not like itās significantly faster either youāll have fun regardless, I just like the feel and sound of v8, the low end torque of a pushrod. But yeah I wouldnāt hate on your eco
Oh nice those are sick, I got a 93 corvette cuz Iām broke lmao. Coulda got a c5 but it woulda broke the bank and this car broke the bank anyways lol. Like a 5 year newer corvette wouldnāt make much of a difference that would need new bushings too and I wouldnāt be able to afford them if I bought one
For me, itās unacceptable for a sports car not to have at least a tiptronic. The fact that you cannot manually select gears at all in a base mustang makes it extremely lame in my opinion. Plus the climate controls are on the touchscreen and the ābuttonsā on the dash are basically just capacitive touch controls over a single really shitty Alibaba tier membrane button. I had one as a rental and did not like it at all. A Miata is a much better car around that price point in every single way except power.
I had an Ecoboost and the car community was so toxic and brought me down so much I decided to sell it for a beater car. I was 21 at the time and now 28. Now that I'm a bit wiser I should've known to fuck their opinions.
I mean, I remember when people hated on people for getting a v6 mustang instead of v8, but how can you hate on a twin turbo v6? Unless your only argument is "more components to break," I'm guessing the ecoboost could probably beat a stock v8 mustang in a race pretty easily
I donāt know why they didnāt rebadge that thing. It looks like an elderly, overweight mustang. haha Just bring back Colt. Fits the visual image while implying itās frisky.
The mustang has always had a smaller engine option available in the US. Even in 1974 when there was no v8, they offered a v6 and 4cyl. Its always been the same car. What is the Ford Colt, is that a Brazilian market car?
Colt, but also shrink it a little bit. idk if they could keep the 2+2, but if it were lighter, aimed more at MX-5, FRS/BRZ, etc. theyād have a winner.
Huge Mustang fan have owned 8 of them but they are not fun to drive to me. Doesnāt matter if it is not an 8 have driven plenty of 4 and 6 cylinder cars that are fun.
Haha knew Iād find this here. The hate is an online thing only, real world, especially now owning one myself for several months, the hate is not a thing. Itās a cool car in and of itself, especially with the high performance, active exhaust and handling packs, and imo the pony badge just makes it cooler. Different noises than a v8, sure, but outside a drag strip or getting yourself into trouble on the street these things are more than enough car for lost peoples needs.
i got a mitsubishi eclipse as a rental and it definitely changed my mind, other than the 78hp and cheap interior, it was quite fun to drive the little thing
mirage is a lot different than scion xb or nissan cube. smaller and cheaper. I do admit they are sort of fun to drive...and people also say they are dead reliable.
Yeah never got the hate for the Kia Soul. My wife bought one in 2016 and we still have it. With a growing family I use the car to drive to work and the family car stays home. I honestly don't mind it and it's fun to drive to work. Nimble af and the gas isn't too bad on it
The Element, xB and Cube can get a pass, but the Kia Soul can die in a fire. That abomination is only driven by the most incompetent people on the road.
Whatās wild about hating on these cars is that they actually do a lot of things that car enthusiasts claim they want: the functional, theyāre not that expensive, and they each kind of have an interesting design, at least compared to your boiler plate crossover. Those are all boxes, but I can think of distinctive design elements for each one of them.
Those cars have a lot of body roll, no road/steering feel, undersized brakes, and lots of understeer when pushed hard. All these things will bother enthusiasts.
Define enthusiast: for someone who cares about driving characteristics sure. But for someone who is enthused about a weird car, they donāt give a shit.
I will say the back seat of a Frontier is maybe the most uncomfortable I have every been. I feel like the seats are almost angled forward.
I'm not a Tacoma fan either, but that Frontier backseat is ROUGH.
They are pretty stout. The 4.0 VQ is a good motor, and both the 6sd manual and the 5 sp auto are known to be pretty bulletproof. I am not as sure about the 3.8l or that transmission on the new trucks, I believe people like the engine at least.
There are a couple very specific issues especially in early trucks with SMOD (strawberry milkshake of death, where ATF and coolant intermix in the radiator), and timing chain tensioners. And these were major issues, don't get me wrong, but they are addressable and largely fixed in later trucks. The irony with SMOD is that Nissan wanted to include a transmission cooler as standard on the V6 trucks, but the design was flawed.
The other common issues are cam shaft sensors, evap canisters and cats going bad. But for sensors, especially, can go bad on any car. I
But I do think it's hard to judge overall reliability from a list like this , because every vehicle has weaknesses. And while these are the most discussed issues, it could also point to the truck being generally quite reliable and people just don't have that many issues overall. Sorry for the long reply, but I think these Nissan trucks are good, honest trucks.
They are well known for their reliability, aside from the early SMOD years around 2010. I had a 2015 and put nearly 200K miles on it, and all I did was normal maintenance and replaced normal wear parts (tires, brakes, etc.). I still regret trading it in.
I always say that there are tradeoffs between the two trucks, and real benefits to the Frontier over the Tacoma. It just happens to be cheaper. And in a world with no Tacoma, it would be the Frontier with its reputation
I hate this take when it comes to Frontiers in general. I've always been a Toyota guy but the newest gen Frontier is arguably the better vehicle from an objective standpoint. The icing on top is that it costs less too.
Went off the market about 5 years ago. I got one of the last FJs sold new in my state, but if I hadnāt been able to I was considering an xterra. They were good.
I have a 20 year old Altima with 215k, got it for $500 and apart from the glass and body being pretty well messed up by a hailstorm (hence the price lol) its in fantastic shape. Front left control arm in the right rear's place, oddly (or so my mechanic tells me, I havent taken a look myself yet), and its not like its needed no work, I've learned how to replace struts and brakes (pads and rotors) but its treated me very well. Hardest I've pushed her so far is about 400 miles in a day a few times, and she took it with no complaints at all
So this dude was able to make 670whp with a turbo and a stock vk 57. That's more comparable to a Coyote than to a RB. Don't get me wrong, with the exception of the gen 1 coyote, Most 5.0s can safely make 800whp.Ā
The Titan is the opposite of this thread for certain. No real hate, but almost zero love. Even Nissan's marketing department didn't love it enough to promote it.
New Nissan frontieres are selling 5K under MSRP on cars.com. Also the used market still counts towards what I was saying. What specific features are you looking for.Ā
I literally built a base model with 4x4 and the bigger back seat. No other options.
I relied on MSRP, I did not shop around for comparable dealer quotes or anything like that.
Used market-yeah old Tacomas are over priced. No argument. But as far as buying new, the Frontier has gone up in out the door cost in the last dew years. It aināt the bargain it used to be.
Itās more truck than most people need and the amount of people that donāt get that or argue it is wild. I would have bought one but went Tacoma for towing capacity and better offroad.
I have an 06 Ridgeline, i bought it used years ago at 120k miles.
I wanted an Avalanche.
My 06 Silverado finally died.
had an 04 Dakota before that
Gave my moms inherited 23 Tacoma to my sister.
Settled for a Ridgeline and all i want now is an 06 Pilot to match it
Considering one for my next vehicle, but Iām sure it will come with a few āthatās just a minivan with a bedā comments. Itās really all I need for the truck stuff I need to do though.
I have a honda Odyssey, and it's basically a pickup truck that seat eight if needed. It would be nice to have AWD, but the Odyssey rides like a Cadillac.
When I see a guy driving a ridgeline, or a minivan for that matter, my first thought is always that guy doesn't care what everyone else think. It's the opposite of what I think when I see someone in a giant pickup.
You didn't otherwise you wouldn't have said what you said. The Civic is Honda at its core and that car isn't just an exception, it's one of the most exciting cars of its era, period, and probably of all time in its segment. It blows your statement out the water all by itself.
Agreed, I've never understood that. I figure it's either their research shows they're too late to the game to make it worth trying to compete with Ford, Chevy, GMC pickups, or it's just never been a priority since Accords and Civics sell so well. But yeah, if they would give it some decent style, I'd have one by now.
Man I really miss my ā03 Avalanche. Even my wife still wishes we had it. It was perfect for what I needed it for but young and dumb me thought a brand new 2011 Silverado would be a lot better.
A shop I worked for had a customer pay us to swap a new frame under his Avalanche. He ordered it new as a 2500 with an 8.1 and didnāt want to get rid of it. Ended up basically being a minor restoration project but it came out better than new. That was probably 10 years ago now and I still see the guy hauling his camper around with it in the summer.
My wife had an early one when we started dating. Piece of junk. Ridiculous amount of wind/road noise. Horrible fuel efficiency. Too small to be used as a truck.
Theyād go forever though. Last one i towed had 550k on the original powerplant and drivetrain. The lower body was all āreplacedā with 1/8ā aluminum diamond plate. Owner was fucking proud of it lol.
I wouldnāt mind having one if i could get it stick, automatics grind my gears.
My aunt got a 2025 Ridgeline sport, got some aggressive tires on it, its pretty zippy, dual exhaust, its got the bed storage hatch thing, I think its pretty nice, I wouldn't complain if I owned it.
I have owned both and I feel the opposite also they got rid of the built-in cooler in the truck bed on the new ones. It literally is a Honda odyssey with the back chopped off for a bed. Donāt believe me? Look up a picture of one with a camper shell.
I like trucks and even I hate how big they've gotten. My old 01 Chevy Silverado is the same size as a current Colorado. My 96 Honda Passport is the same size as my mom's 2015 CR-V.
The only really modern pickup truck that I like is the D40 Nissan Frontier. I don't care for any of the new Chevy Silverados, because not only are they too big, but direct injection did not treat them as kindly as the old port injection did Similar things can be said for the RAM 1500 and the Ford F-150. Plus, the 10 speed in the Fords and Chevy's have proven themselves to be turds and all of them are too fancy for their own good. I don't want any of that overpriced garbage in any vehicle I have around.
I don't know about Ram or Chevy, but Ford addressed the direct injection issue in 2017 I think, switching to a mix of port and direct injection combined, which pretty much fixed the issue. Not a huge win though, that's just 1 issue solved lol. They are just overpriced land yachts now, too many bells and whistles that cause too many problems
This goes for pretty much all new cars, not just the trucks. Most of the problems people are going to have both out of the box and down the road are from all the fancy convenience features that they just have to have.
Cars are still way more reliable and safer now than they were 40 years ago, get better gas mileage and make more power.
Wasn't unusual to see multiple guys wrenching on cars on a weekend even 25 years ago, now people look at you like you are crazy for not "just leaving it to the professionals and taking it to a shop, is it even legal for you to do what your doing?"
So many adults of any gender have NO clue about cars, many can't even check their tyre pressures let alone change a tyre or brake pads
40 years ago yes. 20? Fuck no. 2000s cars blow current ones out of the water on reliability and serviceability.
And yeah, the fact that user serviceability has slowly been taken away is a loss for us all. Dipstcks for instance. Transmission dipsticks are getting rare and even engine oil ones have vanished in many German cars. Parts aren't as accessible in many modern cars. Often for even basics like drive belts. And many things require special tools, like how you need a bidirectional scan tool for many things, even rear brake pads on many cars with electronic parking brakes.
While many guys I'm around drive Diesel trucks, lifted trucks or nice Denali trucks one of the most talented guys I know in construction drives a Toyota minivan with all his tools organized in the back. He could care less to conform to macho culture or looking flashy. He also has the hottest gf of any of the wives and gfs I've met so it goes to show that posturing means nothing to some.
(To clarify this is just a example. Some guys like big trucks because they like big trucks and there is nothing wrong with that. I'm just pointing out the reasoning some guys have as opposed to others) To generalize everyone is just ignorant and is a constant problem on this forum.
Drove a 2013 odyssey for 2 yrs loved everything about it except that it was a minivan. After I totaled it I missed my Tahoe so much I went with that after 6 month's ive missed my Odyssey ever since. Powerful, roomy, and way better on gas
Having driven plenty of Odysseys, they're very solid vans. My mom had one for a couple years and loved it, but it got totaled when someone ran her into a curb. One of my brother's closest friends bought a 14 for his wife after they had their 3rd kid and I threw a timing belt and VCM Muzzler in there for them. It'll serve them well for years to come.
I drive a GMC Sierra, not lifted or anything because I HATE big tires and lifts on trucks...to me it makes them useless as any sort of actual vehicle. It's all about attention at that point.
All I wanted was a single cab with the long bed (look at goofy ass pictures of like an F150 single cab with the short bed, hilarious) but unless you want to get one that's just a "work truck" you can't.
They've made it nigh impossible to get anything other than a crew cab full-size truck and I think that's a travesty.
Unless youāre routinely towing more than 4,000 pounds, itās probably enough but tbh, if youāre routinely towing heavy stuff, you might need a 3/4 ton anyway.
next gen one is supposed to be MY2028 and should have Hondaās new V6 hybrid powertrain too.
Honestly I've always thought they were unnecessarily ugly. Just the way the bed and cab didn't really have any separation. Reminds me of a mix between like an el Camino mixed with an avalanche?
The newest ones actually look better in my opinion, but older models I just never understood why people purposely bought one.
Of course people could say stuff like that about me, so no hate!
Itās due for a redesign. I think the current design looks good anyways. Youāll never find a car that 100% of the population agrees on look wise. Just find what you like.
I don't really care for the look of them over their lifetime but they're excellent trucks and will do everything that 90+% of pickup owners need or use them for.
Easier to maneuver. Big trucks are fun to drive but blind spots are pretty rampant and theyāre just not needed for 99% of people.
It got to where I had to think of our destination and whether I color park the ram without getting door dings and scratches. So now Iām limiting when I can drive a full side truck. Nah. Ruins the ownership.
I'm a 60+ female who needs a truck cuz I'm in the mountains, go to the dump weekly, need to haul stuff once in a while, drive in light snow once in a while, low key needs. I've been looking at Tacomas and Colorados just in passing on the road. Now I'm seeing all this talk about the Ridgeline and am considering it. I used to think they were ugly but the new ones don't look half bad. Anyone have opinions on the downsides for how I'm describing my needs? Also like the crew cab for my dog and grandkids.
Only if youāre willing to admit itā not a truck.
As a ute itās sensible, as a truck it is useless. Same thing with the Kei trucks. I get itās grey for some people but then you needed a car not a truck.
It has a 1500lb payload capacity and a 5000lb towing capacity. Literally 5 corn-fed mfs and your payload capacity is maxed out.
As a contractor that is 16 bags of concrete, barely a morning activity for me, and thatās with just me in the vehicle. If I have 2 other people to help, thatās 12 bags of concrete which we could mix and pour in an hour.
1500# payload capacity is pretty standard for mid size trucks. Some might have specs with 200# more but if you get an off road spec they have \~400# less. Kei trucks have half the capacity of a ridgeline so not sure why its even in the conversation. You're not making it to lunch on the payload of any mid size. If you're doing that math, you're going for at least a half ton anyway. When you look at all the configurations (not just max towing spec), 5k towing is pretty middle of the road in the class too.
So are all the mid size body on frame trucks (that have essentially the same capabilities) also utes? Or is the ridgeline just a ute because its a unibody and you don't like including it because it doesn't pass the purity test?
This whole "ridgeline is not a real truck because no ladder frame" thing is exactly why its at the top of the "way too much hate" list. It does everything an owner of a non-offroading midsize truck owner needs from their vehicle without any of the compromises of a body on frame architecture.
Facts. People call them ugly, but they were just ahead of their time when they came out. To me they look like a Honda Pilot cut up to be a truck. And I like the way the Pilot looks. I'd take a ridgeline over a Hyundai Santa Cruz or Ford Maverick.
Admittedly I donāt like the looks of the first-gen as much as the current one, but judging by the number of them I still see on the road 12 years after that gen was discontinued, they must run forever.
I give the ridgeline all the hate! Iām like what with the stupid ass fastback fairing between the box and the cab. Then I saw one the other day seemed brand new with no fairing, which I thought was compulsive, but it was even uglier!
That said, I have $12,000 into a $3000, 2007 trailblazer.
I hate it, but the alternative of payments or a new shitbucket terrifies me.
For sure. I have never owned one but have been interested in their reputation for years. Truck bros basically hate the Ridgeline because it cannot be easily lifted or modified with a bunch of Ebay parts. Everybody that actually owns one seems to be happy with them. The truck has excelled in offroad and winter weather testing by the car magazines. For me, it's a perfect homeowner pickup. Just the thing to pick up some plywood at Home Depot, tow a jetski, take the snowblower in for a tune-up etc. Very similar to the 2011ish Ford Ranger's which were also fantastic homeowner pickups.
Bought mine in 2019 for $5k CAD with 114,000KM. Thereās 275,000 on it thing is so good in snow, so lucky storage, the bed is a great size. Recommend over and over! 3.5L V6 is a beast too - imo the best Honda motor ever for reliability wise
My Brother in law has one and I had it for a weekend once. It drove great, was super comfortable, was enough truck for 95% of was i would do with it, and had some great features like a cooler in the bottom of the bed, outdoor speaker in the bed, power sliding rear windows, and a big cab. His is pretty new so it looks better than the older one in my opinion. I don't get the hate really unless you need to tow heavy stuff.
Iām more of a Ranger guy myself, but I once saw a comment about the Ridgeline that was along these lines - if youāre a single woman looking for a well rounded man who has his shit together, if you see him in a Ridgeline you better jump on that quick.
There's literally a country song out now about that lol. Only thing I didn't like about newer ridgelines are the cylinder deactivation. And I think still use timing belt
I bought a used 2019 ranger a little over a year ago and itās been a good truck, but now that we have a small child I really wish I would have waited and got a ridgeline, just wish they were a little more affordable
My brother-in-law had a Tacoma forever but when his neighbor got a Ridgeline a couple of years ago, he went and sat in it and he traded his 4th Tacoma in the next day for a loaded new Ridgeline. He loves it.
They're okay-ish now that they've separated the bed and cab with an actual line. First gen didn't have that and didn't look right and also had the bed rails that angled up as it went to the cab.
For most folks that need a "truck", it's all they need.
I have an actual compact truck and it suits me fine. Ordered new, '03 S10, standard cab 6' bed. I'd consider a Ridgeline except for the fact it has a crew cab which I don't want or need and the bed is only 5'4" long with the gate up. Not long enough for my needs. Yeah, with the gate down it's 7' long but I don't like carrying my 4 wheeler or motorcycle with the gate down.
The Ridgeline is solid if you're not towing a lot. The Pilot chassis is also better offroad than it gets credit for thanks to the VTM-4 system, at least on the 1st gens (2nd gens may be a bit too big). Plus the J series is the best of the transverse V6s and at least in the 1st gens, none of them ever got its achillies heel, VCM.
I had one, they're solid. Unfortunately I do tow a lot, so they're not practical for me.
I've been saying for years the 1st gen RL is an absolute bargain. I've seen quite a few with 500k + KM. Bought mine a few years ago for $9k CAD and it has been phenomenal. Very reliable and capable, only thing it is missing is a 4x4 Low gearing.
Have a 22ā RTL-E and love it. So comfortable. I can use it for everything. I live in town and Iāve never thought I needed anything bigger. And we have the tent for it!
Agreed this is the winner. I drive a tacoma- but I tell my friends who do less truck stuff but want a truck to get a ridge line.
Seriously it does 100% of what a suburban person will need- even a lot of the off roading an average person does. Is more comfortable. Is quieter. can fit 5 comfortably. storage out the wazoo.
It only taps out when you're doing more dificult offroad. And doesn't have the same "beat the living hell out of it" energy the tacoma has.
The only reason I gave up my Ridgeline is that I needed to do some over 5k lb towing. Now that I don't tow anymore, I'm eyeing a downsize to the Ridgeline again. Honda made a great vehicle.
I really like X series suv. BMW purists hate them in the forums, but theyāre solid. The x5 was definitely the car I have enjoyed the most in my life. It had less issues than my Nissan(transmission issues) or Honda (framerot) had.
They're not even that expensive to maintain. You just can't neglect it like a Toyota, so in comparison, yeah they are expensive. Change your damn oil and fix the leaks, cheapasses
Compared to most other cars, everyone is "too cheap". German cars are not made with mechanics in mind. It's ok to need maintenance by the book, but not when you need to disassemble half the hood to get to a part that's easy to get in any other brand.
Lol can we not just mimic online opinions. My honda hrv was much more of a pain in the ass than my tiguan to work on. And dont get me started on kia's brake caliper removal
Parts are harder to access because they are maximizing the performance and balance of the car. This posses engineering challenges and requires them to make decisions that would sacrifice ease of repair for performance.
I did several maintenance things and one part replacement on my 5 series and it was no different than any other car I owned. The exception was the cabin filter. Had to take one interior part off to get to it, but thatās just one more step. Also, ever changed the oil on a 2000s Camry? The filter was behind the exhaust manifold in between the pipes. Tell me that isnāt just stupid design too.
Over generalizing. My 07 328i has been a very reliable daily and is relatively easy to work on. Havenāt had a single issue other than a valve cover leak
Not enough hate in the world for these. I got hit by one of these when I was on a bike at 14 years old. It was the drivers fault dead to rights and still tried to strong arm a 14 year old he almost killed. Some years later a pt cruiser almost side swiped us wheb changing lanes because they didn't check if they were clear. They were so upset that we honked at them to prevent an accident that they decided to create a road rage incident.
Im always weary of any pt cruiser because a driver that paid money for that POS probably doesn't care about cars whatsoever and probably doesn't car about being a good driver either.
There is a reason Skylar white bought Jr the pt cruiser. You were meant to hate the car as any self respecting teenager would.
I owned one, a GT with a 5-speed manual. A sort of SRT-4 wagon. It was not a great car and it was not particularly well built. BUT old dudes LOVED it, the most compliments Iāve ever gotten on any car Iāve owned. It was like Boomer cat nip. It also was WAY quicker than most people imagined. I could surprise SN95 Mustang GTās
They were good cars that got a lot of flak because of the retro car craze in the early 2000ās and honestly out of all the retro inspired cars they looked the best, though the Ford thunderbird was decent too
Another example of a car that actually satisfies a lot of things cars enthusiast seem to say they want, but then they hate on the car: itās a unique design, it does the retro thing well, itās not super expensive, and itās very usable as a daily.
Mazda Miata. One of the best on road go carts ever. Just gets emasculated because of insecurity. Definitely has to be manual with the sport package. Itās enough HP to get in plenty of trouble, trust me
Small trucks as ānot trucksā most the big truck dudes never use them appropriately. If youāre not in a trade or own a farm you really donāt need one. It just reeks of teeny pelini.
My buddy got one as a lease on a good deal. He barely had it a month and the paint was peeling. He has to take it back three times. First time to get it repainted from the factory. Second time they screwed up the clear. They didnāt properly sand and buff and marked the door jamb somehow. Third time because there was a dent in the bumper where they must of used a screw driver to pop a click out. So they had to replace that. The owner of the dealership had come out and went over the vehicle with him and the body shop owner to make sure it was solid. I believe they needed up giving him money back and something else because he wanted out of the lease at that point. The rest was on the body shop but I couldnāt believe what he went through.
That's wild shit, imagine selling a vehicle for like 40 grand (I'm Canadian, it's like $43k up here) and the PAINT peels from the factory??Ā Ā
Just for your info - it's extremely unlikely they sent it back to the literal factory for paint, the dealership most certainly has a partnership with a local body shop to whom they contract out 100% of their jobs to. Source: was an insurance adjuster for years, literally every customer thought that if they brought their car to the dealership it meant that the manufacturer would fix their car. They were always misled about that unfortunatelyĀ
Thankfully he knew they were using a local body shop they worked with to do it. They were at least transparent about everything. Itās just a shame they messed it up so much. I couldnāt imagine spending all of that money for something like to happen.
I sure wasnāt recommending the hilariously unreliable PHEV for $45K.
But a few months in, the nonhybrid variant was functionally priced like a Trax or a Sentra. And guess what? You got way more for your money, and it felt much nicer. Nothing in that price bracket is reliable, so Iām not too bothered if the infotainment screen glitches.
If only they made them alongside the Compass and not in Italy with the Toenail. I wouldāve liked to see it trundle along for a few years. See what they do with the hot one.
I got so much freakin hate for my Prius just because it was a Prius. Drove that boy for 10 years and itās still my favorite car Iāve ever owned. Miss it a lot. Great gas mileage, kinda zippy, surprisingly could haul a lot in it despite it being the smallest kind(Prius C) and overall required hardly any maintenance.
I drive a Prius and a Volvo vnr. If I could drive the speed of light, nearly every car on the road would somehow find a way to travel FTL in order to pass me
We have a 2012 and it's been awesome. More space than most crossovers, plus cheaper, plus better mpg, and sure it's no sports car, but it handles better than crossovers as well.
My 06 Tundra. Then again the people that hate on it are the idiots that will run through 2 or 3 Ram pickups before my tundra even thinks about giving up the ghost.Ā
Another example of a great car, who's reputation has been tarnished by the 3rd, 4th, and 5th owners who drive like absolute assholes. It's actually quite impressive how hard it is to kill an Altima!
Car is objectively a better enthusiast car than the ctr for 99% of buyers.
You can literally buy the EN and pay for probably 50 track days before your money spent matches a ctr.
If seat time and fun per dollar is your objective, which it should be for an enthusiast car, there's really no debate. .
On the flip side, there are too many people that refuse to daily drive their ungodly overpriced civic because they care more about saying they own one rather than actually driving it.
I love fwd cars with lsd's but in what world is a large practical 4 door fwd hatchback anyone's weekend car.
On the flip side, the EN is by far the fastest, most capable and reliable track car per dollar spent. Even the brz/86/Miata cannot come close to matching it on pace but definitely could argue they're still more fun.
Unfortunately, most EN owners go the way of dumbass gunshot pops and think the redline is 4k in their shitty exhaust videos.
I own a 2013 Kia soul as well. No issues I hope this evil never reaches me and I'm at 145K miles. I check the oil every week and no issues so far. To be fair I have kept a good eye on maintenance.
It was literally an entire generation of their vehicles that had complete engine defects. Massive class action lawsuit over it. Iām in the middle of my final 1,000 mile oil consumption test for an engine replacement. At least the warranty is good, but they make you jump through hoops.
Exception, not rule. Plenty of Kia/Hyundai Theta II motors out there that have blown up, even with proper maintenance. Several of their engine lineups have known issues.
They have had some issues that tarnished the brand. They also cut some corners (like the immobilizer debacle).
However, we have 3 Hyundais and 1 Nissan. Both brands that are usually despised. The Hyundais are 2010, 2011, 2023. The 2010 crossed 200k miles a year ago. Only normal maintenance items.
We do change the oil frequently. I've had to replace the valve cover gaskets(really easy to do), and the engine looked super clean. I changed the transmission fluid, the magnets had collected plenty of metal(and plenty of iron was seen when it was tested), but it still shifts fine. I'll do another fluid change in a few months and test the fluid again.
They do not tolerate neglect. A Toyota might run on oil sludge, a Hyundai will grenade.
I think one of the major problems with the brand is the people who buy Kia and Hyundai's tend to go cheap on maintenance which means they will face problems down the road. I only say this with experience with several friends who were either mechanics or who sell cars as their main hustle. You take care of the car and the car will take care of you.
My households owns two Kias because that's what we could afford at the time but with the connections I have in the car world I often keep on top with oil changes, fluids, etc. I have other friends warning me "oh no that Kia about to explode". So far my Kia have held up and never left me high and dry. Now the Kia Boyz stuff did turn me off because I can't really fix that outside the fixes Kia gave but honestly I have not seen the bad side yet of the brand. Maybe I'm just lucky and honestly I ve had the cars for 10 years each so at this point I'm good even if it did "explode"
Been driving their vehicles since 1999 here. Aside from a Delta V6 with oil starvation issues, I have had zero problems.
I even picked up a repo'd 2018 Sorento SX AWD, fully loaded with front and rear AC, unusual for a 3 row SUV. Had a couple warranty items fixed on it, no charge. Drove it for 4 years and pulled trailers with it. Never an issue of any sort once the warranty items were fixed (bad sway bar bushings and a leaky strut).
Driving a Sportage Hybrid SX Prestige AWD now and love it. No issues. Partner has a Genesis GV60 all electric Performance AWD model as DD. It's flawless as well.
I've owned a number of other brand vehicles too. Jeep was dogshit. Worst build quality I've encountered.
My GMs had constant nagging issues that eventually had to be fixed. Oil leaks were a given. Water pumps that last 45k miles. Body and electrical stuff that had me wondering if the car was checked before delivery. One even had the carpet pad rot out due to a hidden moisture leak.
Worst issue I had with that engine oil issue, they gave me another car to drive for a week while they replaced the engine, which had 70k miles on it.
Iām now on my 3rd (Genesis 3.8), 4th (Kia Telluride), and 5th (Kia Soul) Kia/Hyundai products. The quality is good and they back it up with a good (formerly great) warranty. Iāve never had one break down either. Take good care of them and they will take good care of you. My only complaint has been the paint.
Iāve driven mine upwards of 80mph in a 65 zone and trucknuts bros still want to fly by me. Their delicate egos canāt handle having a Subaru in front of.
Will do, but honestly is everything else that scares me. I know they have some very weak hub bearings and with only 33K kms on the odometer it has developed some clacking sounds up front, it may be break pads. Pretty unaccettable for a brand new car. Also, I know that at some point mainteniance costs will skyrocket...
We got burned with our old 2010 (2009?) headgasket. Replaced the first time when we had the engine out doing maintenance for another recall (can't remember what maintenance required us to pull the engine) and with another 60k miles, it was already blowing smoke. My daughter in law, who totaled 5 cars, took that one out with her super driving skills. And then had the nerve to give my wife some driving advice.
We stuck to Honda CR-V (2019 and then 2022) and Mazda MX-5 Miatas (2010, 2021).
I worked at a super large used car company with over 150 lots and kept track of the repairs for every vehicle. Subaru had reliability equivalent of a Ford with 35% repair rate. Toyota had the lowest with 22% followed by Honda and Mazda around 26% (would have to look it up). Dodge had one of the lowest with over 50% needing repairs.
My wife looked at the Mazda CX-50 but hated the console from my MX-5 so much (can't touch it when it is moving) that she got the Honda. I've been daily driving my Miata since 2021 and didn't buy it for the screen. Her sister got a CX-50 and the salesman spent a couple of hours going through how to operate it and she loves it. Hint, the dial and the buttons on the steering wheel work great. I still think the CX-30/50 looks a lot better than the Honda.
The Mazda CX-30/50 are made in the Toyota plant in Alabama, the MX-5 is and always has been made in Hiroshima Japan, home of the first atomic bomb Little Boy. Sometimes I swear I could see a faint green glow from my Miata when the light hits it just right. Interesting enough, my wife's Honda was made in Canada.
The Northstar issue is way overblown The cars go 100k after the head gaskets go. Just bring coolant. Hell they don't even need a cooling system if you dont mind them going into 4 cylinder mode for a while.
Come to think of it, I donāt recall ever being passed by a Prius. Tons of retirees drive them where we live - like you said always below the speed limit, changing lanes without signaling, swerving all over etc.
I donāt think the hate came from the car itself, aside from being ugly and goofy looking, but the owners. Early on, the virtue signaling from that group was interesting to say the least. Then the drivers themselves seem to be some of the worst on the road and entitled. They put BMW drivers to shame. I think the new ones look sporty and nice tho. They should have gone that route 10 years ago.
I think itās finally getting its due. legendary vehicle with outstanding engineering thatās gonna go as one of the great cars of all time. I mean, how many do you see on the road every day? How many do you see it with insane mileage? Things are tanks and brought the hybrid movement to the masses.
As a car, it probably gets too much hate, but take away Elon Sieg Heils, and you're still left with a mediocre, unrefreshed EV with quality control issues, from a company with a history of over promising and underdelivering.
Really they should be on the same level as Jeeps. People probably hate them too much, but people also love them too much. They're fine. They were 10 years ahead of the curve 20 years ago. They have some neat bells and whistles. But about the best thing you can say about them is they're great for Ubers and that's not exactly a ringing endorsement.
I know they didn't spend $250 million bucks to get their Epstein Island buddy elected so they could steal our data and get all the government inquires against them dismissed.
And would that be the $6 gas that we got from the President's Yolo war that was done with zero planning?
Honestly, I don't judge people who drive Tesla's (ok yes, Cybertrucks), you can't expect moral purity tests from everyone on every product all the time. It's just not reasonable.
But if you are telling me that Model 3s most redeeming quality is they are reasonable transportation well... that's pretty much what I said. They're fine. They're good transportation for the price.
The same guy who tweeted about the president being on that island? š yes, definitely ingratiated himself with that one.
And gas has been $5-6 in CA since 2020. Under both presidents. Iām sure your biased ass turned a blind eye before 2024 though. Thatās why damn near a quarter of this state has an EV. And Teslas are the only great option.
Glad you donāt judge the people just trying to get by based on your terminally online moral standard.
And how did Musk know Trump was on the island before the files were released?
Grok read
Honestly, I don't judge people who drive Tesla's (ok yes, Cybertrucks), you can't expect moral purity tests from everyone on every product all the time. It's just not reasonable.
to me as hatred to working class folks who need a car so I can avoid woke opinions like a billionaire pedophile giving another billionaire pedophile $250 million in exchange for a White House car show is bad.
But they keep trying to make it cheaper instead of better. One has to be very careful with their inconsistent build quality, and bad quality is built-in to many cars.
And most of what is loved is having an EV car. Those are great, and nearly every other EV car on the market has shown that it's not very hard to beat a Tesla's build quality.
I get a lot of good attention in my VIP style 2014 model S once you get talking to people in the real world, who are based in reality and not conspiracy echo chambers.
Coworkers want to ride in it, some want to get one, asking me all kinds of questions, especially with gas creeping up around $100 oil.
I have an independent EV repair shop. Teslas are the most repairable EVs, have the best parts availability, and stay on the road the longest. The interior might rattle and the suspension is a consumable, but they're the only cars that don't sit on my lot forever for lack of parts and repair information.
I would say Jeep Liberty is one. I used to dislike them when they came out because of their weird curves, but over time I have come to appreciate the Liberty's styling and the other weird styles of the late 90's/Early 2000's.
Other than being a Chrysler product, their biggest problems to me is a lackluster aftermarket for parts and mods, and that Mopar parts are too expensive for what they are. I have one with 180,000 miles. It is quick and fun for what it is, with the best turn radius of any SUV I have driven. You just can't let them run low on coolant or you will overheat quickly and warp the heads. Regular oil changes and normal maintenance gets these things to 200,000 plus miles.
Mark V Supra.
"Nice BMW".....HAHAHA, I haven't heard that at least 2000 times!
Seriously fast, handles like a a slot car and the looks while polarizing for some certainly stand out.
IMO is going to be really missed in 10 years and fold are going to look back on it like they do an S2k or RSX TYPE -S.
Never mind it costs like $60k. Hell you can't get a Tacoma for that.
I think honestly that where people get hung up is its the prelude name.
I think personally it slots in fine with the heritage of the line up, but I think if they had named it anything else people would be much more accepting and not care as much.
If the old Prelude was slow by 90ās standards, the new one is even worse by comparison. It makes the same exact horsepower as a base-model 97 Prelude (200hp), with hundreds of pounds in added battery/motor weight. Itās the equivalent of a 2026 Mustang GT making 215hp
Such a great handling car that Honda put all the press cars on cheater tires and told influencers to rave about the handling if they wanted to do future business with Honda
A couple things, the older prelude was eventually popular because it was a lightweight highly moddable, high revving manual car. The newer prelude is simply not that
for me its not that. It's more of it being soulless, and pretty much the same car as any other honda or Acura in the market. And be honest, aint no one buying that cause it handles great, you got the miata and 86 for that.
Agree. First of all nameplate aside, itās not a bad car. I do think itās overpriced considering some of the features that you arenāt getting for the 40,000 range, but at the end of the day, it looks good and itās got a very reliable platform. Great car to pick up used in the next couple of years hopefully. I just wished for a $40,000 plus car I could get some power seats. crazy that I canāt.
No, the whole prelude part.
I really do think people misremember what this car was. It was never fast. It was always more of a grand touring vehicle.
Do I think this new one is grand touring? No.
But I think itās still gives you kind of what the old prelude did in terms of giving you a unique car thatās interesting to look at and though itās not the most fun to drive itās not super boring either. I also like the way the tailgate looks on the new one.
Its a disgrace to what the prelude was and its a further bastardization of the prelude line. The 80s preludes were great, the 90s butchered them. Now the 2020s made them this expensive over priced nostalgia machine that isnt like the original.
As I said that was the start of the bastardization of the car. One of the reasons it litterally was discontinued because it became something it never truly was in 10y.
Exactly. I remember looking at a 2000 in the showroom and wondering whoād buy a Prelude SH for $27k when the Civic SI was 18.. literally a 1/3rd cheaper
About the same ratio as today, and I have the same question still. Iād take the SI
I was hoping someone would say this. I like the idea of a very efficient car with way too much chassis, so I like defending the new Prelude just a bit too much.
The price issue isnāt going to last long; itās just one of the first and most prominent cars announced with the tariffs priced in. See also: the new Cherokee. Everything else is going to get more expensive, used Preludes are going to lose value, and things will basically even out.
My Hyundai Elantra N. Itās an extremely competent car and has been proven to be reliable. People hate it because itās plagued by Hyundaiās reputation. Iām just like come on people, Nissan builds some good vehicles as well, itās just their CVT vehicles that deserve the hate.
Really? People seem to like these where I've seen them. I think they look and especially sound great, and this from a guy that prefers the sound of V8s.
Every truck smaller than a half ton is overly hated on by guys that think they need a half-ton (or more) but never tow anything or have more than a couple hundred lbs of payload in the bed.
my dad will talk shit about rangers, mavericks, s-10's, tacomas etc being for pussies but he's never hauled anything heavier than a push mower or a deer carcass in his f-150.
Absolutely legendary in New England when I was growing up. I regret never owning one. My Dad had one briefly and I remember one time the valet at the restaurant walked up to us with the keys in his hand and said he couldn't figure out how to start it (the ignition was on the floor between the seats).
I always wanted a 9-3 Viggen...I had a chance to drive a couple, and those things were crazy, with the out-of-control-feeling low-end acceleration, and the arm workout you got after rowing through the five speed, and the cool black & blue seats.
I drove one when it was brand new with temp tags on it. Absolutely loved it, but it was a bit rich for me at the time. That blue caught my eyes in the parking lot at work every. Morning.
Saabs were such cool, quirky, fun carsā¦until GM got their mitts on them and ran the entire brand into the ground.
The Saaburu, the rebadged Chevy Trailblazer (oh but it had Saab heritage because they moved the ignition to the center console!), the overdesigned last 9-5 ā¦just criminal.
I remember that big GM buyout tanking Saab in the early 2000ās and coinciding with the death of my 1986 900 turbo convertible. Such a cool car compared to others of itās generation.
The new Outback. If you don't like it, buy something else. There are so many choices in the compact/midsize SUV market these days. Also the PT Cruiser and the HHR, there must be a reason that they sold so well that I still see several a day on the road
I donāt know the fine details, but I always got the impression that it was a pretty new and solid drivetrain (likely thanks to a lot of parts sharing from Mercedes) but the overdone gangster look, chrome and cheap interior materials just didnāt do it justice. They would have gone a lot further by ditching some of the āflairā or at least offer a more understated option.
It seems you donāt know the large details either. The over-the-top āBudget Bentleyā design helped it outsell all of the other domestic full sized sedans from 05-14 and gave it a reason to hang on for another decade, bad interior and all.
True.. I guess itās the fact that it worked very well at the time but didnāt age well. I mean, the PT cruiser was disruptive too, until time wore on.
When dodge tried to move away from the V8s I was kind of staggered they didn't want to try to resurrect the neon srt4. The focus is out of the picture, chevy has nothing comparable.
Especially now that they've decided they want to fool around with turbos. Would have been an interesting test bed for that hurricane engine's turbos.
They just have an aversion to making cars people want to buy now.
Being a car guy, you could pick out every design detail from the Germans. Theyāre like the Whereās Waldo of the car world. Very good looking vehicles nonetheless.
The Audi guy started with the Optima redesign for 2011. I thought it was a good looking car, and after a little research, I bought one. The only brand new car I ever owned that I even thought of getting another one. Iāve had three since.
whoever they hired, i think they have done a damn good job. never was around them until the past 6 years - my wife drives them. in that 6 years they have had a big come up in my opinion. haven't had any issues either.
Damn, never heard of those before but they look awesome. Almost want one now. Though I'm not seeing any in petrol manual configuration so it's a non-option for me.
Never heard of any engine issues. If you go to the stinger subreddit the only issues are the brakes on the brembo factory brakes and trunk rattle. Obviously there are some outliers, but heard the 3.3L and 2.5L are very reliable. Have heard some issues on the 2.0.
I donāt think itās a bad car, but I have heard itās a bad design. My understanding is that a turbo failure or water pump failure will require you to disassembly half of the engine.
Mazda Miata. To many people think itās not a real sports car, meanwhile the driving experience and handling are better than cars well over twice the same price.
I don't dispute that, depends on your body ratio. My brother and friend are taller than you and are a bit cramped in the ND but fit. You'll probably fit in fine a 3rd gen (NC). But I havent seen anyone under 1m85 struggle.
Teslas. All models. It actually makes me angry that people who dislike Elon Musk seem to think itās reasonable to vandalize somebodyās car just because itās a Tesla and Musk owns the company. He doesnāt own that car anymore and it doesnāt affect him one bit when they damage the car but the person who worked hard to own it has to pay for repairs!
Ehhh this is also the company that is removing previously free features from their cars to try to convince people to spend $12K a year for autopilotā¦.
And signaling that theyāre actually a robot company. It wouldnāt surprise me if they start to squeeze current Tesla owners more for money to try to find their robot aspirations.
I wouldn't vandalize one but I hate Teslas for the love of the game. It is a car for people who hate cars / driving. Yes they can be fast, yes they may handle decently. I guarantee the repairs suck. Also just the general design, why are we putting oversized ipads as the main way to control car functions, it is dangerous and stupid.
We do all kinds of work to the batteries, motors, and electronics. The difference is in access and repairability is staggering through. Think about a wear item like contactors. They are in easily accessible compartments on Tesla vehicles. On something like a Ford, they are not meant to be field serviced and take a ton of hours to replace. Ford dealers won't even replace them, they just make you pay for a whole new pack if it's out of warranty. And the parts are a lot harder to get. This is just one example but basically true for everything in the high voltage systems.
Fair enough. I made my comment specifically with the idea that most Tesla owners probably just got to a Tesla service center for majority of repairs / maintenance and I've heard it isn't the best experience in the world.
You ever see places that say when you buy x we send a dollar to support cause z? Well buying a Tesla is doing that except the cause is making the world a shittier place.
Iād never vandalize anything but not gonna cry when the Tesla owners life gets a little shittier too.
Absolutely. We could continue down the ordered list and might (or might not) disagree on the importance of the evils of Elon vs the evils of the oil industry and other billionaires.
Vandalizing, sure, I can agree with your argument.
But Tesla build quality is bad. Quality control is bad. Interiors are bad (Model S was ok, but overpriced for what you get). The supercharger network is really the main thing going for them.
I dislike Teslas for reasons other than Musk (though I donāt like him either) but when looked at as purely a way to get around, theyād work just fine enough for the majority of people who have a way charge.
The exception to this for me would be the Cybertruck. I donāt care what anyone thinks that thing is a piece of junk and a waste of resources.
Nissan 350gt V36 or g35/36(?). If you leave them stock(ish) and use them as a regular car they're actually a lot of car for the money and with the VQ35HR quite reliable and not slow at all. Also fun to drive once you get used to it.
Golf GTI, since I have one everyone seem to have a very strong opinion about it and a need to tell me what is wrong with the car (they drive a fiat or a Dacia)
Agreed, love the 206. Heaps of fun for what it is and a surprisingly reliable/practical daily. I know a few people who still daily 307s and they've aged better than any of us expected. I've seen more than a few on the market with 350,000kms+ (usually diesels).
I'd never buy a petrol 207 though, that Prince engine (shared with the Mini of the same years) and its timing chain issues...
Yeah, the BMW/Mini engines suck, but the 1.4 73hp and 1.6 109hp are decently solid. And the diesels too.
And since all those Peugeots are cheap and dont mind if your shitbox self combusts, you can just buy one with a mini/BMW engine anyway and hope it runs fine. If it blows up, just sell it for a little less than you bought it for.
Peugeot. People love to hate on the French and tbh the 2010s models were quite bad but recently they improved everything massively. Cars are much more reliable and very stylish these days and nowhere near as crazy priced as the Germans.
Ah! My previous car had been an 89 civic hatchback. The del Sol was the first car I owned that could accelerate up the local grade, but it was far from a muscle car.
Just a cute little 4-banger that was fun to drive.
Prius. My friends surprised the crap out of me when he did a 60 pull in sport mode. Comfy quiet ride, obv great mileage and lots of trunk room. All around a good car but the owners and the way they drive gets them allot of hate.
Real as hell and totally agree lol. Honda fanboys trip over themselves to crap on the current Accord but itās really not that bad of a car. Especially the hybrids.
And I say that as an owners of an almost 20-year old Accord lol
Price isnāt super bad. Maybe it is if you get the hybrid I have the ex. I love the car to bits. Plenty of horsepower big interior and great headlights Iām night blind so itās needed. I donāt understand the hate I do feel like the hate has died down since people didnāt like the exterior design at first but now it grew on more people.
Ford Probe. Especially the 2nd gen GT. Crappy name for an otherwise interesting car. The Mazda v6 in the GT is a lot of fun to rev out and IMO is one of the nicer sounding v6 engines on the road.
Iāve never owned the 35 but had a g37 and 370zs, it was my first car and I have very fond memories of it. Iāve loved vqs ever since, had 2 370zs too and boosted one. These cars are very underrated and surprisingly very very reliable. So much fun and other than a e90 I donāt see any other car in the price range that comes close to the fun youāll get from a g
Iāve bought all my vehicles from Facebook marketplace lol. I donāt like financing vehicles so I try and get what I can afford to buy cash and these are definitely a hidden gem for the money and Iāve never regretted getting one, Iām looking for another, but itās very hard to find a clean manual g37 ipl
That is true. They get a bad rep from those street takeovers. I used to own one myself and normally I am seeing a trend where they are just being used for street takeovers
Canāt understand why all the hate on these other than the ass hat ceo. Cheapest car Iāve ever owned, most American modern car too. One of the fastest responding cars. The insurance is higher, but never have crashed a vehicle in my life. No gas stations is a game changer.
Apparently the new 26ā Outback. I love mine, but the hard core enthusiasts hate that car. They complain bitterly and constantly about it no longer being a wagon. Itās actually a really nice vehicle.
Anything that should be a V8 and isnāt and anything thatās classified as a truck to the community but on paper isnāt ā¦like the ridgeline and Santa Cruz. Also the Tacoma but tbh Tacoma doesnāt get enough hate.
⦠and I will argue that current hybrid Siennaās appear popular only because of intentionally low inventory with units being purchased by people who grew up in Sienna or odyssey families.
Prius. It's not a driver's car and the people who drive them hate cars (probably) but they are engineering marvels. The motors, eCVT design, accessory drive delete. Super efficient, and super durable.
Nissan. Basically everyone hates nissan because of a few bad years of transmissions. Other than cvt transmissions nissans cars and pickups are pretty reliable inexpensive vehicles.
My 4th Gen Toyota Tacoma. I get so tired of people whining that the 2.4l Turbo engine is untested and will break down within a year.
This is the same engine used in two other Toyota/Lexus vehicles for years.
The mileage could be better, but is beats my 05 Tacoma.
Cybertruck. I feel like people only really hate it because politics are heated right now and everyone loves to jump on a bandwagon. I'm not into EVs, but I do appreciate car design wherever it is. I am so sick of manufacturers stealing each others' design cues and everything in traffic looking the same, so to me, it's refreshing to see a company thinking so far outside the box. The Cybertruck is completely bonkers, and I love it for that.
The Elantra N, it's obviously not a fast car by any means but it's the best brand new car for the price and it's incredibly fun. However hates on it hasn't driven one
The hybrid models have more issues than non but when you sell 275k Tacomas in a year, youāre going to see more problems pop up than say a frontier that sold 60k.
Itās because they put out more torque. Do we actually know the problem? I suspect the non hybrids are just gonna get it later - like how the hybrid Toyota TTV6s arenāt recalled for engine failure because the motor takes some strain off the engine.
The biggest issue so far has been transmissions overheating in 4hi when off roading at slow speeds because they donāt have an external transmission cooler. Not really an issue in 4lo though. The early 24s were having failures in the same way tundra engines are where the machining material wasnāt completely cleared out.
Your entire profile is dedicated to the truck, of course youād say some shit like that. Brother, stop the cope.
Itās been 5 years. Thatās not a lot of time for a vehicle many expect should last upwards of 20-30 with barely any issues. The new Tundra V6āa have shown that they already may have some problems, with many reports of engines seizing up after only a few thousand miles of operation.
weird, when my profile pic is my frontier. i work for an off road company so i deal with nissan and toyota stuff daily. there is no cope here. the 2.4 has proven to be reliable since its release. the tundra has been having issues for the last 4 model years.
These is a guy in r/LandCruisers already reached over 100k miles without any issue. The turbo 4 is in Lexus NX, then Highlander/grand Highlander, and others. I donāt know why people say they are completely new š¤·
People keep moving the goalposts on when these engines will fail as they reach the miles they initially said with zero issues. First it was they wonāt make it 50k, then they hit 50k with zero issues. Then it was 100k, and theyāre just fine at 100k. Until we see them start actually having issues, thereās no reason to think they wonāt last. Not to mention the 3.5 it replaced seems to be blowing up regularly on owners.
That is not how some people talked about the new turbo 4. They say you need to replace turbo before 100k and then maybe replace hybrid battery as well before 100k. š«
Other than being small and lightweight they are unreliable and huge fuel burners - loved the RX7s back in the day, but no place for a rotary anymore, if there even was back thenā¦
In all honestly much of that hate that a Rotary engine receives is deserved.
Sure, it's lightweight compared to its power output, but there's no way to really use one without it guzzling gas. Also, to get the higher torque out of it, you need to wind up the RPMs, such that it consumes fuel even faster. The ultra lightweight RX7's could get (in a 100% perfect world) 22 MPG. The RX8's (with a heavier body) would get 20 if the stars aligned. 18 and 16 MPG (respectively) was a much more accurate consumption.
Everyone that I knew which had an RX-7 fit into two camps "never again" because eventually they had had the Apex seal blow, or "they're just fine as long as you maintain them" but had the lower end engines without turbo, etc. that probably helped the car last longer.
It's a great engine design, but it's one that simply pours gas through the engine at an absurd rate. If you need that kind of power to weight ratio, like on a track, great. If not, it's not well suited to city driving.
They do use a shit ton of fuel. I had a 1993 RX-7 and it is the only car I have ever sold that I regretted. Definitely not a practical car though.
Mine was modified with a single turbo and I would get maybe 16-18 MPG if I could stay out of boost. If I was more consistently in boost I was getting like 8 MPG. It was running very rich though and some of that would have been resolved with a better tune. On the plus side, it would shoot huge fire balls on decel if that is your thing.
I've never understood the whole "it makes great power for 1.3 literally," like dude you drinking fuel like a c20 with a Chevy big block towing another c20 with a big block.
But it is a 1.3L making nearly 200hp per liter from the factory without forced induction.Ā Pretty impressive if you ask me.Ā Ā
Also the drag racing boys are down into 5 second quarter miles with that 1.3L so that's kinda neat.Ā Name another race engine making 1500hp per liter.Ā Even top fuel is around 1000-1200hp per liter on nitro
The whole hp/liter is deceptive, they only account for one face of each rotor, while it technically has 3 faces each and fire more often than a piston in a 4 stroke engine. Displacement means jack if it's using the same amount of air and fuel as a big block. Let's also not completely forget that the fastest drag cars are all supercharged big blocks.
I'm not disagreeing that they fall into a weird class for sure, but for something the size of a big watermelon with 3 moving internal parts making 2000+hp is pretty impressive to me.Ā Or even 232hp stock
But then again I'm a big fan of weird engines.Ā Should a 2 stroke Detroit diesel have its performance numbers cut in half because it can fire every cylinder every rotation unlike a 4 stroke?
Essentially yeah, I've always felt that 2 strokes are technically twice the displacement because they fire twice as often. The Detroit diesel also needs a supercharger to function because it can't intake air on its own. I like Detroit diesels and I can appreciate the Wankel, but they are niche, can they make power? Sure, but there is a reason we don't see either of them in modern cars or trucks.
Yeah they were abysmal on fuel but understand for each rotation of the crank shaft, each rotor fires on two sides.Ā Compared to a piston that fires once every other rotation, makes sense why they drink fuel and eat plugs and coils.Ā Ā
At 10k rpm, a 2 rotor engine fires 40k times per minute.Ā A v8 at 6k rpm fires 24k times in a minute.Ā Kinda neat stuff.Ā Ā
But cooling was always a concern, rx8 radiator was about twice as tall as the front end was.Ā And yes, I usually got about 18mpg on premium fuel in a 3000 pound car.Ā But man it was fun.Ā Ā
I have some experience with a 2nd gen RX-7, NA, auto. It was a fun car, but not much for acceleration and it used oil pretty heavily. The suspension was wonderful and the 9k rpm redline was fun as well.
TIL, but I still suspect that the other commenter was thinking about the still-common radial aircraft engine, not the obsolete-for-100-years rotary aircraft engine.
Confusingly it looks like rotary engines refer to ground applications and radial engines are the same but for aircraft, then there's the Wankel rotary engine which is something completely different that has the triangle shaped thing in a round combustion chamber.
With the current value of certain collectible cars and the running costs associated to them(like air cooled Porsches or many BMWs) a rotary doesn't seem that bad anymore.
Problem now is finding anyone willing to touch them.Ā I had an independent shop refuse to replace a headlight for me one time because it was a rotary engine.Ā The second shop that did do it, flooded the engine by moving it cold and shutting it off.Ā Luckily that was a quick fix with no tools.Ā Ā
(Blip throttle to 3k and shut off if engine is not up to temp or you will spend a bunch of time with fuel pump fuse pulled to get engine started)
Unfortunately that's a bit of a chicken or egg problem. If the cars were more valuable more shops would maintain them, but they are less valuable partly because it's hard to find a shop to maintain them.
Yeah it was frusterating and part of why I eventually got rid of it.Ā There were never many rotary techs and there are fewer and fewer each day.Ā Hope Dahm gets more people I know them because the places that do support them are doing wild stuff (mostly PR, Aus and NZ)
Its fuel economy and emissions that killed it.Ā The apex seals and oil consumption issues were over exaggerated.Ā Ā
Did 117k miles on an rx8 that had excellent hot compression at the end.Ā Had it tested and disassembled to make it into a race engine.Ā After that it was an unreliable mess.Ā Ā
Wheres the hate though? Ive only heard good stuff about them in the car community, small, lightweight, good power, cheap because everyone is scared of them... Decently reliable but they need rebuilding every 50-120k km. Thats their biggest issue, apex seals fail and oil consumtion is pretty common.
Oil consumption is because there is no "lower end" with oil in it.Ā To lubricate piston rings, oil must be added to fuel.Ā Rx8 had an oil metering pump like a snowmobile where it pumped engine oil into fuel to burn.Ā Other option is to delete the OMP and run 2 stroke oil in fuel.Ā Ā
My rx8 I had for 117k miles, ran great, did test and teardown for aggressive porting and it tested excellent.Ā After race build it was a hot mess though
Family of cars, but since things like the rx3, Cosmo and reputation are so rare I just put rotary engines since both rx7 and rx8 got lot of hate from people who dont know.Ā Ā
Oh yeah!!! In the 80s, I got a 1980 RX-7. I was like 20 and dumb, so I accepted the sellers assurance that it just needed a tune-up. We'll, got it home after buying it and my mechanic broke the news, it needed a new engine. :-(
Turns out the owner left it parked for a year or two without starting it, so the seals of the triangle engine dried out.
Never buy one without a mechanic checking it!
Teslas. You guys are nuts to pass up on insane performance, bumping stereo systems, incredible UI and app support, and the best EV ecosystem on the market.
I didn't know they got hate. I had a 2009 G37 sedan that I loved. Kept it for 15 years and over 210K miles with few problems. Engine and transmission were rock solid.
The Mustang II. Gets shit of for being a reskinned Pinto, saved the Mustang name and heritage. Would have died out due to the shortage/embargo era if not for that.
Suzuki did well up until the Consumer Reports story that painted the Samurai as a death trap and sales fell year over year. Although the lawsuit proved Consumer Reports altered the test vehicles and procedures to make it seem deadly, due to one of the researchers losing a son in a Samurai crash and used his position to deface Suzuki's brand image, the damage had been done.
Until this day, lots of people still believe it. I daily a Sidekick on and off road, really push it hard and never came close to tipping over.
Iām not sure about this one. I donāt even care about the whole Elon aspect of it. My friend had one and other than accelerating very fast it seemed very cheap. He traded it in and got a new Toyota Corolla Hybrid for a fraction of the cost and it seemed way better built.
Thank you for spelling it correctly. This is also my vote, had one for my first car and it was such a great vehicle. Quirky, different, fun and unique options that surprised everyone who got inside.
Its looks were just far ahead of what the world was ready for. If it were released today, it would barely register on the looks scale.
Because it validated their product and showed only they were capable of building it successfully. If you wanted a fuel efficient lesbian outdoor car thereās not two options. Just one
Until you have to maintain and repair the vehicle. Youāll get the automatic āfuck you taxā since the car has an extremely tight engine compartment and is difficult to maneuver unless you have tiny hands lol
I went into the used market looking for 2 things - working AC and a reliable engine and transmission. I was shocked to find that a R170 (Kompressor w/ 6mt) was actually the best running option I found at $2000. There was nothing else at $2000 that ran anywhere close to as nice as this ran. It does look pretty beat up though but still.
Jeeps. I truly think people that hate on them are just jealous they donāt have the option to drive door-less or top-less. So many ways you can customize your ride in the summertime. Itās a great concept and they get entirely way too much hate.
Totally agree. Especially used, if you're willing to do some basic work on them and aren't taking it to the dealership. Is it 4runner level reliability? No but it's also a lot more comfortable and a lot more powerful than a 4runner. With 20% more care than given to a typical SUV they'll run easily 200k miles, but way more comfortable.
Most people will not push it 1% of it's capabilities.
One of the biggest jokes in the pickup truck world is how few people use their trucks as trucks EVER. So this whole thing about the CT is a bunch of gatekeeping BS.
Aim your hate at the right people and places. Not at people just buying what they enjoy.
Most people's daily or weekly commute is less than that, and if you're buying an EV you should have researched on where to charge it first before you buy it. My recommendation is to have a place to charge it at home, or at the very least there's a public charger near your workplace or home.
I have a Nissan Leaf with the 40kWh battery (140 mile range), and it's enough for me because I can charge at home and it's fully charged up when I wake up in the morning. It's very cheap to run and thus I can save up some money for my old VW bug š.
I used to shit on Corollas until we bought one as a second car. Now I can see the point of them. They do exactly whatās expected of them, reliably and economically. Itās the most car most people need.
If the auto wasn't a CVT, just a normal auto they'd probably be liked more.
Then the certain demographic they attract also ruins them (idk how they attack so many cringy people).
Other than those 2 things, they're solid cars that live off basic maintenance and have fun handling once you put quality lowering springs in.
Mini coopers in general. I had one in college and man was that car fun. And the interiors are cool as hell, It was like driving an airplane with those toggle switches.
I traded up to a charger for something with more power, but now I've got a bike that has basically ruined fast cars for me, and I find myself looking at mini coopers again.
C4 corvette - the cars are actually pretty impressive but they get major hate for no reason
Mirage - gets hate despite being an excellent car for what it is, cheap, reliable, fuel efficient, easy to work on.
Dodge challenger - seems to get a ton of flak and stereotypes like it cant handle despite some models pulling 1g. Cars are reliable, comfortable and do most things well
It's been either the 1st or 2nd best-selling VEHICLE in the WORLD for the last 3 years. This despite what you read on Reddit.
It had early quality issues. In the last 3 years, those issues have been resolved.
Acceleration of a sports car.
One of the most efficient BEVs ever made.
Besides tire rotations, basically no maintenance is needed.
Best charging network in the U.S. by a mile.
Best UI in the business by a mile, and constantly gets better.
The most "American" car built in the world. U.S.-sold Teslas have the highest U.S. content of any vehicle made.
Even taking into account the CEO, Tesla has a higher loyalty rating than Toyota, Lexus, Honda, and Porsche. To be fair, it used to be 20 points higher, which considering the Tesla demo is amazing.
Are you disparaging a fine AMC product? š Says the person who drove the wheels off of an AMC Eagle. She was quirky, but I loved her. My mechanic bought it from me at 250,000 miles.
Toyota Supra A90. Co-developed by BMW⦠who fucking cares? Itās a great sports car and very nice to drive. If it wasnāt for the cooperation neither BMW nor Toyota wouldāve built the cars.
Fiat Multipla. It is excellent, amazing for what it is meant to do. And when you're inside it, you dont have to look at the "creative" light arrangement
Subaru: because of the head gasket stigma, the issue was resolved like 12 year ago and it was only one series engine.
Hyundai/ Kia: the last problematic engine went out of production with the previous Telluride. No engines currently produced are spinning bearings or excessively burning oil.
Can't speak for the current generations but I think LR3 and LR4 generation land rovers are hated on way too much. They are not that bad, it's the condition that they show up in used markets that is bad.
If you buy a 100k mile 4runner, it almost doesn't matter if the previous owners were great or just ok about maintenance (it does but this is the perception). If you buy a 100k mile LR, you really have to worry about if the previous owners (plural) cared at all - I don't think most of the 1st owners even intended to see 40k miles.
But to turn this into a blanket assumption that they all self destruct at 120k miles is just not true. It's true that they're less reliable than other vehicles in their price and class, but overall they're not as bad as people claim. This is more of a problem with the 'new vehicle value' and I think a lot of these that are really depreciated are actually a great value used, but only if you can do your own maintenance and repairs to get ahead of a few known weaknesses.
Everyone whines that cars have gotten way too complex and are too difficult to maintain & repair. The Outlander Sport hasn't been significantly updated for around 15 years, making it the most "old school" car on the road in the U.S. today. It's slow, it's not super efficient, but it provides basic transportation, it's easy to work on, and its Japanese construction means Toyota-level reliability (provided you actually service the CVT) without the Toyota tax.
Chrysler 300 with the hemi specifically. The charger and challenger are known to be reliable with that power train, the only reason the Chrysler isn't regarded that way is due to its attachment to other Chrysler and dodge vehicles that suck.
Now they are. In the 90s people were horrible and weird and called them cute hairdresser cars and had weird gay panic shit over them. Weird shit from insecure dudes.
If you know as Miata owners as I do (I have owned two of them and drive with the local Miata group), not a mid life crisis car as they are a retirement car.
The Pontiac Aztec, it is essentially the precursor to most modern SUVās and crossovers, it honestly isnāt terrible looking especially compared to many modern crossovers and SUVās, and was billed as an outdoor car you can commute in comfortably unlike a jeep or bronco from the 90ās. If it came out today it would have likely been a top selling car for GM and especially with the rear hatch tent being something novel to the segment people like Subaru and Toyota donāt
Probably the 3rd gen Tundra. yes the v35 situation is fuckin insane but at the end of the day the real world failure rate is not even 3% so yeah thatās a lot of hysteria for a car where 97% of them are perfectly fineĀ
Oh Iām sorry are you actually purchasing a GM L87 pickup, Stellantis product, or F-150 (which is rated worse than both) over a Tundra? Hmph I didnāt think soĀ
Ecoboost mustangs. If it had a Toyota or a Honda badge people would LOVE it but since it has a v8 counterpart it gets shit on, especially in that community.
Ehh. Iāve witnessed too many fords with serious issues to cut them too much slack. Id still buy some models but I think a lot of the hate is valid. Just among family and friends ive seen two fiestas blow transmissions under 75k miles and a 2015 focus transmission went out at 120k. My ranger blew its trans at 110k. Multiple engine problems in my buddies 2 year old F150. Theyāve made some good stuff over the years but I understand the hate too lol

birdpix@reddit
35 years on minivans, the perfect vehicle for location photographers with tons of expensive gear to keep safe and dry.
Drove Dodge, Plymouth, and Chrysler minivans for decades until I had enough of poor quality and got my first Honda Odyssey, which has spoiled me rotten. It's 10 years old/new and will be my last vehicle I will own. Love it - it's soooo comfy!
Plus it has a sunroof, my first hole in the cieling since 1984 and the t-tops in my '77 Trans Am. So yeah, some muscle car guys do grow up to trade comfort for speed!
timesink3000@reddit
I drive an 08 Odyssey. Everyone questions why I drive a minivan until they get in.
birdpix@reddit
My mom called it a little limo
timesink3000@reddit
My friend refer to it as the living room.
Andy_850TB@reddit
I'm on my 3rd Chrysler minivan now, 06 model with 236k miles and it might never die.
birdpix@reddit
All of mine lost transmissions right after the warranty expired. We're in Florida, so a lot of UV, but everyone of our Chrysler vans (beige, green, gold, and white) all had major paint issues including top surfaces all fading and bad clearcoat. Also had one where all the roof paint blew off the van in large pieces that were swirling around my van in a car wash dryer.
The air conditioning always failed, so even in Florida summer, I got used to the windows down. I even noticed other vans on super hot days with their windows down too.
Andy_850TB@reddit
my first one was a 91 model, xmission planetary gear blew up at about 150k miles. Second one was a 95 (?), ugly as sin but dead solid reliable. Xmission got stuck in second after I was in a collision. This egg shaped 05 model, the xmission is still hanging in there and most of the power stuff still works. AC blew cold right up to the end on the other 2 and also this one, although I had to have the condenser replaced after hitting a deer.
birdpix@reddit
Useful hauler, for sure. An old boss had an original 84 he bought new, had old and money so he maintained perfectly and on the factory schedule. Last time I drove his van in 97, he had over 300k on the darn thing. It hauled 6 adults and towed a 4x5 trailer loaded with heavy gear. It drove fine, and the little 4 cylinder got amazing mileage.
Ice cold air repair and 1 transmission were his major things beyond all the manufacturers' recs.

Sienna here! AWD and no Timing Belt.
200k and drives almost like new.
birdpix@reddit
Don't rub it in, we had Sienna envy, big time. Used Honda budget though...
werdnax12@reddit
I had a Sienna, v6, well it was my family's car, the thing was surprisingly fast! Loved that thing. Didn't know about the timing belt and it blew up on me at 260k miles. I was a teenager still, with what I know now, it would've been running still
Longjumping_Cow_5856@reddit
3rd gens have a chain and not the belt.
Actually from 2007 they had chains!
Splenda@reddit
That AWD is incredible and the seats are comfy. Meanwhile, you can haul tons of gear, sleep in it, change in it, etc..
Longjumping_Cow_5856@reddit

Honda Odyssey is such a great piece of engineering.
SuperJo64@reddit

Not everyone needs a minivan, but the people who try to cram their family into an SUV when a minivan would be the far more logical option just drive me nuts.
zionpwc@reddit
I was at a ski trip and the mountain had a flash snow where it got all the exit traffic got stuck because numerous cars didn't have AWD. I'll never look at the sheer panic and worry on this dad's face with his kids in a minivan that couldn't go up the hill with everyone pushing and it kept going backwards to hit the car behind which also had nowhere to go.
People are drawn to SUVs for the better safety as well
Budsygus@reddit
And in that case the minivan wasn't the far more logical option, huh?
zionpwc@reddit
My point is this is why people buy SUVs. They want confidence and safety
Budsygus@reddit
And my point was not to bash SUVs as a vehicle choice, but instead to call out the people who would be better served by a minivan but choose an SUV for no practical reason whatsoever, basically sacrificing comfort, safety, cargo space, etc. for the express purpose of not being seen driving a minivan.
SUVs are great vehicles, just like pickup trucks, but people who choose them for vanity reasons are the ones who drive me crazy.
zionpwc@reddit
I think we know what each other is saying. Keep in mind, AWD always works, not just in rain or snow. I just got an AWD for the first time and it's amazing because my front wheels just don't spin out anymore.
Budsygus@reddit
Nice! There are downsides to AWD, but if you're in a situation to need it you darn well better have it.
Slough-House_75@reddit
Owned 3 Odysseys in a row going back 22 years. Yeah we are THAT boring family.
Budsygus@reddit
We drive an Odyssey right now and it's been great.
Mountain_Ad_4670@reddit
Educational-Raisin69@reddit
This is how I ended up with an Odyssey. We looked at a bunch of three row SUVs first, and didnāt love any of them. One of the dealers we visited had a great deal on an Odyssey and we decided it couldnāt hurt to test drive it. Best car buying decision Iāve ever made.
Budsygus@reddit
I love our Odyssey. I thought we'd never be able to afford one with the features we wanted, but my wife found a used one that was a great deal. Such a nice vehicle!
Steakonanopenfire@reddit
Yeah, minivans rock. We got a minivan when we had two kids and my wife literally cried because we were now minivan people. We traded our second Grand Caravan for an SUV after both kids left home. I figured my wife would be happy to no longer be a minivan person. So, so wrong. One of her stated reasons is that we can't fit a 4x8 sheet of plywood in an SUV. One of the many reasons I know i married well 35 years ago. We will be getting a minivan as our next vehicle, just not a Stellantis.
-srry-@reddit
their problem has always been the car-grade transmissions equipped to a vehicle that's loaded down like a truck.

RepliesToNarcissists@reddit
A while ago, there was a pop-up auto history museum thing in my area. There were the usual traditionally cool cars there as well as one minivan: The first ever 1984 Plymouth Voyager.
No one there was just casually interested in it. People were either utterly indifferent to it, confused by its presence in the first place, or completely and utterly enthralled. Lee Iacocca was a fucking genius, and I'm not talking about anything he did at Ford.
Armaced@reddit
Minivans have a reputation that they are not āmasculineā, but they are utilitarian and often the right tool for the right job. I canāt think of anything more masculine-ideal than selecting a vehicle not based on identity but based purely on utility.
lemelisk42@reddit

Super_Direction498@reddit
It's the butt end of many jokes. I've been in construction (masonry) for 25+ years and it's always been puzzling to me the number of tradesmen who, from a utilitarian, functional stand point, should be driving a mini van, but instead are driving lifted SUVs or pickup trucks or some such non sense. Those might make sense for certain types of work but when I see a trim carpenter trying to jam all their stuff under the hard tonneau cover of their lifted ram3500 it's sort of a head scratcher.
Unkorked@reddit
I've been driving one for 10 years. The seats all fold down so I can use it for work and when the weekend hits I can put up the seats to bring others on trips to the mountains. When you can fit a sheet of drywall or plywood in a heated area and not have to worry about tying it down or rain that is a bonus.

Ecoboost Mustang
If any other manufacturer made a rear wheeled drive car, with a turbocharged engine making 315 horsepower, and was charging "nice Camry" prices for it.. it would probably be universally loved.
But because it has a pony symbol on it, everyone roasts it as "not a real mustang" and other stupid sayings that suggests it's a shitty car because it doesn't have a V8 in it.
Silly.
m_adamec@reddit
They should have made the ecoboost mustang a smaller sports car and then it would be cool.
LibrarianFlaky951@reddit
As a Mustang guy I donāt look down on Ecobeasts but itās definitely a different class of car than the 5.0 or better trims. Nothing wrong with it at all, just not the same. That said, I will hate on the Mustang Mach E. They had no business putting a Mustang badge on that thing.
Insomniac427@reddit
They should have just called it the Mach E, and leave the mustang off the name. They could have even used that unique Mach mustang font somewhere if they want , and keep the triple tail lights as an homage, but putting a pony on it is just an odd choice imo.
AltruisticThoughts@reddit
Probably an unpopular opinion.. but I think they should have brought Mach E in as the new Ford Thunderbird. Itās an EV and creative play on the name. You also donāt piss off the Mustang fan base.
Waste_River_5244@reddit
Pinto MachE?
LibrarianFlaky951@reddit
Exactly - it just has no place in the Mustang lineage. Worse than the Mustang II.
Insomniac427@reddit
My brother had a Mustang II when I was a kid, he ended up putting a v8 in it before he traded it for a 68 convertible. Lots of good memories for me so I have no problems with that having the pony. Prob also why Iām a fan of my HPP ecoboost now. There is some room for love under the pony badge. But I draw the line at the Mach E.
Ok-Square360@reddit
I contend the Mach E is WAY better than any Mustang fan assumed it was. Itās the nicest interior and fit and finish Iāve seen in ANY FoMoCo product.
But it has no business using the Mustang name.
danusn@reddit
They wasted an opportunity to name it the Thunderbird. Goes well with the electric theme also.
upstatefoolin@reddit

Way faster is a stretch. The blocks are known to crack at a bit over 400whp, which is about what stock coyotes dyno depending on the year.
MuonBomb@reddit

MatTheScarecrow@reddit
I mean, those are nice for sure. But I'm pretty sure the Lexus and the BMW have a much higher MSRP than an Ecoboost. Shame about the Q50 being discontinued in North America.
I guess my "universally loved" statement might have been an exaggeration, though. Based on that.

Gullible-Annual2394@reddit
I agree with you but they would be a lot cooler if they didn't sound like shit. there are a few inline 4s out there that sound decent out there and despite the noise being a huge selling point for muscle/pony car buyers ford didn't even fuckin try with the ecoboost.
AFB27@reddit
Honestly this. And I was one of the haters until I drove it.
It's not the best performance car, but I understand why people buy it now.
secondatthird@reddit
I do however hate the v6 Camaro and charger.
secondatthird@reddit
It still has a full size truck engine I believe.
AWDDude@reddit
I think the problem is the weight. The mustang chassis was designed for the almost 500hp of the v8, and even with the eco boost itās still almost 4000lb.Ā
Ok-Measurement-1270@reddit
4 banger? On a pony car psssh absolutely not worthy of the name
Mustangs are all about power, putting down horses and making thunderous noise as y- wait a minute
zyarelol@reddit
Kind of goes for all base model muscle cars. V6 Stangs, Camaros, Challengers, etc. All pack waaay more oomph than the average economy car and are substantially more affordable than their V8 equivalents, especially after factoring in insurance and fuel. And people act like they're slower than minivans just because better trim exists.
WhiteBeltKilla@reddit

Mundane-External3462@reddit
Back in the foxbody years they had the SVO, a 2.3 L Turbocharged Mustang, sound familiar? I hate those "not a real mustang" comments so fucking much becuase they don't know ANYTHING about Mustang history
ElvisT@reddit
FarArea1814@reddit
Ngl tho if it was a rwd Camry with that kinda power itād probably handle a lot better, and I know mustangs got better handling over the past decade but itās not great either
bandit1206@reddit
Iāve got a 2025, it handles better than any Camry etc Iāve ever driven.
FarArea1814@reddit

bandit1206@reddit
Still prefer the Mustang. Mustang is better looking too.
FarArea1814@reddit
Ok I respect that, donāt get whatās best get what you like. Corvettes aināt the best but I like them.
bandit1206@reddit
C8 was very tempting, but out of my budget this time around.
I wanted something with 2 doors that I actually fit in and was RWD. Had a Challenger several years ago, looked at a 23 Scat pack, but wanted to buy new.
FarArea1814@reddit
Why do you wanna buy new? Itās such a rip off. You coulda got a low mileage c7 or that 23 scat, like even if you plan of keeping it forever itās not like 1 owner could do that much damage in under 30k miles.
bandit1206@reddit
40k out the door for a loaded ecoboost convertible with full warranty. 45k for the loaded 23 scatpack, and never liked the C7s. C2s and early C3s catch my attention, but beyond that the C8 is the first newer Vette that has really made me look at them.
FarArea1814@reddit
I think the scat is better tbh but whatever I guess, you seem like youāre not looking for the most bang for your buck youāre more so looking for the most practical car. But then wouldnāt the scat still have the nicer interior and more features?
bandit1206@reddit
Scat was on par, but Stellantis quality knocks it down a peg or 2. It had some of the same features, but it had the alcantara seats instead of leather. The Mustang definitely had more features.
FarArea1814@reddit
Ahh ok fair, fuck it then man Aslong as you like it. I still love v8s I donāt think I could get an ecoboost mustang, Iād def have to go with a c7 if I had 45k$ but thatās just me. I donāt race and itās not like itās significantly faster either youāll have fun regardless, I just like the feel and sound of v8, the low end torque of a pushrod. But yeah I wouldnāt hate on your eco
bandit1206@reddit
I love a V8 too, Iāll save that for the 69 charger I want next.
FarArea1814@reddit
Oh nice those are sick, I got a 93 corvette cuz Iām broke lmao. Coulda got a c5 but it woulda broke the bank and this car broke the bank anyways lol. Like a 5 year newer corvette wouldnāt make much of a difference that would need new bushings too and I wouldnāt be able to afford them if I bought one
turnburn720@reddit
I'll tell you what else: the 3.6 camaros with a manual are about the same. Fun to drive, great on gas.
Hersbird@reddit
The only problem with non-v8 Camaros, Mustang, Chargers, and Challengers is that v-8 versions exist.
SCOOTY_POOTIS@reddit
For me, itās unacceptable for a sports car not to have at least a tiptronic. The fact that you cannot manually select gears at all in a base mustang makes it extremely lame in my opinion. Plus the climate controls are on the touchscreen and the ābuttonsā on the dash are basically just capacitive touch controls over a single really shitty Alibaba tier membrane button. I had one as a rental and did not like it at all. A Miata is a much better car around that price point in every single way except power.
asscraq@reddit
I had an Ecoboost and the car community was so toxic and brought me down so much I decided to sell it for a beater car. I was 21 at the time and now 28. Now that I'm a bit wiser I should've known to fuck their opinions.
werdnax12@reddit
I mean, I remember when people hated on people for getting a v6 mustang instead of v8, but how can you hate on a twin turbo v6? Unless your only argument is "more components to break," I'm guessing the ecoboost could probably beat a stock v8 mustang in a race pretty easily
Prize-Mail-6769@reddit
Should a been called a Probe, the original not a Mustang
Sparkle_Rott@reddit
I donāt know why they didnāt rebadge that thing. It looks like an elderly, overweight mustang. haha Just bring back Colt. Fits the visual image while implying itās frisky.
redrider02@reddit
The mustang has always had a smaller engine option available in the US. Even in 1974 when there was no v8, they offered a v6 and 4cyl. Its always been the same car. What is the Ford Colt, is that a Brazilian market car?
Sparkle_Rott@reddit
No. Itās just a cute tie in with the word Mustang, still giving the horse vibe. Most people wouldnāt remember the original Colt.
PlatinumElement@reddit
Colt was a Dodge/Mitsubishi though, not a Ford.
Sparkle_Rott@reddit
But Colt is so cute as a smaller Mustang.
SpyderDelica@reddit
Colt, but also shrink it a little bit. idk if they could keep the 2+2, but if it were lighter, aimed more at MX-5, FRS/BRZ, etc. theyād have a winner.
RabidLizard@reddit

ForeskinForeman@reddit

Loose_Tip_8322@reddit

Insomniac427@reddit
Haha knew Iād find this here. The hate is an online thing only, real world, especially now owning one myself for several months, the hate is not a thing. Itās a cool car in and of itself, especially with the high performance, active exhaust and handling packs, and imo the pony badge just makes it cooler. Different noises than a v8, sure, but outside a drag strip or getting yourself into trouble on the street these things are more than enough car for lost peoples needs.

Whatās wild about hating on these cars is that they actually do a lot of things that car enthusiasts claim they want: the functional, theyāre not that expensive, and they each kind of have an interesting design, at least compared to your boiler plate crossover. Those are all boxes, but I can think of distinctive design elements for each one of them.
redrider02@reddit
Those cars have a lot of body roll, no road/steering feel, undersized brakes, and lots of understeer when pushed hard. All these things will bother enthusiasts.

MorinOakenshield@reddit
As a Tacoma guy I always wondered how these things are in terms of reliability?
jiveabillion@reddit
They're very reliable, they just aren't as robust as a Tacoma. You can't abuse it like you can a Tacoma.
BoxOfRandomCords@reddit
Sorry for the long reply, but I think these Nissan trucks are good, honest trucks.
mikeTheSalad@reddit
I am a current Gen 3 Tacoma owner and love it. I also owned a 2009 and a 2012 Frontiers. They were solid.
Xavier12-@reddit
They are well known for their reliability, aside from the early SMOD years around 2010. I had a 2015 and put nearly 200K miles on it, and all I did was normal maintenance and replaced normal wear parts (tires, brakes, etc.). I still regret trading it in.
BoxOfRandomCords@reddit
I always say that there are tradeoffs between the two trucks, and real benefits to the Frontier over the Tacoma. It just happens to be cheaper. And in a world with no Tacoma, it would be the Frontier with its reputation
applestofloranges@reddit

I relied on MSRP, I did not shop around for comparable dealer quotes or anything like that.

I like trucks and even I hate how big they've gotten. My old 01 Chevy Silverado is the same size as a current Colorado. My 96 Honda Passport is the same size as my mom's 2015 CR-V.
werdnax12@reddit
Same, I loved my 1st Gen Tundra, had the power I needed, but often got mistaken for a modern Tacoma, because it was about the same size
SkylineFTW97@reddit
The only really modern pickup truck that I like is the D40 Nissan Frontier. I don't care for any of the new Chevy Silverados, because not only are they too big, but direct injection did not treat them as kindly as the old port injection did Similar things can be said for the RAM 1500 and the Ford F-150. Plus, the 10 speed in the Fords and Chevy's have proven themselves to be turds and all of them are too fancy for their own good. I don't want any of that overpriced garbage in any vehicle I have around.
werdnax12@reddit
I don't know about Ram or Chevy, but Ford addressed the direct injection issue in 2017 I think, switching to a mix of port and direct injection combined, which pretty much fixed the issue. Not a huge win though, that's just 1 issue solved lol. They are just overpriced land yachts now, too many bells and whistles that cause too many problems
SkylineFTW97@reddit
This goes for pretty much all new cars, not just the trucks. Most of the problems people are going to have both out of the box and down the road are from all the fancy convenience features that they just have to have.
HalfFrozenSpeedos@reddit
Cars are still way more reliable and safer now than they were 40 years ago, get better gas mileage and make more power.
Wasn't unusual to see multiple guys wrenching on cars on a weekend even 25 years ago, now people look at you like you are crazy for not "just leaving it to the professionals and taking it to a shop, is it even legal for you to do what your doing?"
So many adults of any gender have NO clue about cars, many can't even check their tyre pressures let alone change a tyre or brake pads
SkylineFTW97@reddit
40 years ago yes. 20? Fuck no. 2000s cars blow current ones out of the water on reliability and serviceability.
And yeah, the fact that user serviceability has slowly been taken away is a loss for us all. Dipstcks for instance. Transmission dipsticks are getting rare and even engine oil ones have vanished in many German cars. Parts aren't as accessible in many modern cars. Often for even basics like drive belts. And many things require special tools, like how you need a bidirectional scan tool for many things, even rear brake pads on many cars with electronic parking brakes.
geardownson@reddit
DarthDurden23@reddit
Drove a 2013 odyssey for 2 yrs loved everything about it except that it was a minivan. After I totaled it I missed my Tahoe so much I went with that after 6 month's ive missed my Odyssey ever since. Powerful, roomy, and way better on gas
SkylineFTW97@reddit
Having driven plenty of Odysseys, they're very solid vans. My mom had one for a couple years and loved it, but it got totaled when someone ran her into a curb. One of my brother's closest friends bought a 14 for his wife after they had their 3rd kid and I threw a timing belt and VCM Muzzler in there for them. It'll serve them well for years to come.
Silence_Farmer@reddit
I drive a GMC Sierra, not lifted or anything because I HATE big tires and lifts on trucks...to me it makes them useless as any sort of actual vehicle. It's all about attention at that point.
All I wanted was a single cab with the long bed (look at goofy ass pictures of like an F150 single cab with the short bed, hilarious) but unless you want to get one that's just a "work truck" you can't.
They've made it nigh impossible to get anything other than a crew cab full-size truck and I think that's a travesty.
jwbourne@reddit
To be fair, most with truck owners could do what they need to do with a mini van with stow and go seats and the bonus of added security.
shreddedsharpcheddar@reddit
yeah except a minivan with a bed is a fucking awesome idea if youve ever actually driven a car
pfohl@reddit
Unless youāre routinely towing more than 4,000 pounds, itās probably enough but tbh, if youāre routinely towing heavy stuff, you might need a 3/4 ton anyway.
next gen one is supposed to be MY2028 and should have Hondaās new V6 hybrid powertrain too.
MaroonHawk27@reddit
Payload is also a really big factor though. I max my 1500s out all the time unfortunately
Silence_Farmer@reddit
Honestly I've always thought they were unnecessarily ugly. Just the way the bed and cab didn't really have any separation. Reminds me of a mix between like an el Camino mixed with an avalanche?
The newest ones actually look better in my opinion, but older models I just never understood why people purposely bought one.
Of course people could say stuff like that about me, so no hate!

It got to where I had to think of our destination and whether I color park the ram without getting door dings and scratches. So now Iām limiting when I can drive a full side truck. Nah. Ruins the ownership.
Active_Elk_4831@reddit

I've been looking at Tacomas and Colorados just in passing on the road. Now I'm seeing all this talk about the Ridgeline and am considering it. I used to think they were ugly but the new ones don't look half bad. Anyone have opinions on the downsides for how I'm describing my needs? Also like the crew cab for my dog and grandkids.
Active_Elk_4831@reddit
Perfect for you. Luxury truck for me because I grew up driving crappy s10s and Sonomas lol
South_Bit1764@reddit
Suitable-Birthday-90@reddit
South_Bit1764@reddit
No, I mean, my point is that the whole āmidsize truckā argument is dumb period.
An F150 is dumb, too. Dumber possibly if it dint have more towing capacity than the Ridgeline.
Also, I say itās not a truck because itās a transverse FWD. Same reason an El Camino is a truck but the Scamp isnāt. Itās a Ute.
UnderwhelmingAF@reddit
Agreed, for those purposes youād absolutely need a traditional truck.
idontcare3434@reddit
Iām renting one right now and itās pretty solid! Just find it ugly
Figuringitout2297@reddit
Facts. People call them ugly, but they were just ahead of their time when they came out. To me they look like a Honda Pilot cut up to be a truck. And I like the way the Pilot looks. I'd take a ridgeline over a Hyundai Santa Cruz or Ford Maverick.
UnderwhelmingAF@reddit
Admittedly I donāt like the looks of the first-gen as much as the current one, but judging by the number of them I still see on the road 12 years after that gen was discontinued, they must run forever.
Mrcostarica@reddit
I give the ridgeline all the hate! Iām like what with the stupid ass fastback fairing between the box and the cab. Then I saw one the other day seemed brand new with no fairing, which I thought was compulsive, but it was even uglier!

Afitz93@reddit
Iām more of a Ranger guy myself, but I once saw a comment about the Ridgeline that was along these lines - if youāre a single woman looking for a well rounded man who has his shit together, if you see him in a Ridgeline you better jump on that quick.
EventuallyScratch54@reddit
There's literally a country song out now about that lol. Only thing I didn't like about newer ridgelines are the cylinder deactivation. And I think still use timing belt

One_Evil_Monkey@reddit
SkylineFTW97@reddit
The Ridgeline is solid if you're not towing a lot. The Pilot chassis is also better offroad than it gets credit for thanks to the VTM-4 system, at least on the 1st gens (2nd gens may be a bit too big). Plus the J series is the best of the transverse V6s and at least in the 1st gens, none of them ever got its achillies heel, VCM.
I had one, they're solid. Unfortunately I do tow a lot, so they're not practical for me.

And doesn't have the same "beat the living hell out of it" energy the tacoma has.
fugaziiv@reddit
The only reason I gave up my Ridgeline is that I needed to do some over 5k lb towing. Now that I don't tow anymore, I'm eyeing a downsize to the Ridgeline again. Honda made a great vehicle.

Parts are harder to access because they are maximizing the performance and balance of the car. This posses engineering challenges and requires them to make decisions that would sacrifice ease of repair for performance.
AZHawkeye@reddit

It was literally an entire generation of their vehicles that had complete engine defects. Massive class action lawsuit over it. Iām in the middle of my final 1,000 mile oil consumption test for an engine replacement. At least the warranty is good, but they make you jump through hoops.

Yep and the sister company hyundai. Iāve had multiple hyundais go over 200k miles, and currently loving our kia niro plug in hybrid
outworlder@reddit
SuperJo64@reddit
Steakonanopenfire@reddit

i admitt when i see a kia i think the driver is a joke right off rip
osmiumblue66@reddit
TunakTun633@reddit
But oil starvation is a pretty big thing, right?
osmiumblue66@reddit
Yep, and the engine got replaced.
TunakTun633@reddit
Fair enough!
Rhazzah23@reddit
Iām now on my 3rd (Genesis 3.8), 4th (Kia Telluride), and 5th (Kia Soul) Kia/Hyundai products. The quality is good and they back it up with a good (formerly great) warranty.
Better-Credit6701@reddit
Slow_Description_773@reddit

Better-Credit6701@reddit

Other than being a Chrysler product, their biggest problems to me is a lackluster aftermarket for parts and mods, and that Mopar parts are too expensive for what they are. I have one with 180,000 miles. It is quick and fun for what it is, with the best turn radius of any SUV I have driven. Obviously honda isn't really too worried and it doesnt seem like they're gonna lose sleep if it doesnt sell well because that was never the goal
seems they just wanted to do it and have a tech test bed. If it sold well it was just icing.

OofNation739@reddit
Its a disgrace to what the prelude was and its a further bastardization of the prelude line. The 80s preludes were great, the 90s butchered them. Now the 2020s made them this expensive over priced nostalgia machine that isnt like the original.
Its like the mustang E having a mustang badge.

The old prelude from the 90s was priced (with inflation) nearly the same as the new one without tariffs at roughly 36-38k

R1tonka@reddit
I drove one when it was brand new with temp tags on it. Absolutely loved it, but it was a bit rich for me at the time. That blue caught my eyes in the parking lot at work every. Morning.

Saabs were such cool, quirky, fun carsā¦until GM got their mitts on them and ran the entire brand into the ground.
The Saaburu, the rebadged Chevy Trailblazer (oh but it had Saab heritage because they moved the ignition to the center console!), the overdesigned last 9-5 ā¦just criminal.

I wouldn't vandalize one but I hate Teslas for the love of the game. It is a car for people who hate cars / driving. Yes they can be fast, yes they may handle decently. I guarantee the repairs suck. Also just the general design, why are we putting oversized ipads as the main way to control car functions, it is dangerous and stupid.
saabstory88@reddit
Repairs at Tesla can suck. I own an indy EV shop and Teslas are the most repairable EV and it's not even close.
outworlder@reddit
So, you can repair their computer ? Replace battery cells!
saabstory88@reddit
We do all kinds of work to the batteries, motors, and electronics. The difference is in access and repairability is staggering through. Think about a wear item like contactors. They are in easily accessible compartments on Tesla vehicles. On something like a Ford, they are not meant to be field serviced and take a ton of hours to replace. Ford dealers won't even replace them, they just make you pay for a whole new pack if it's out of warranty. And the parts are a lot harder to get. This is just one example but basically true for everything in the high voltage systems.
EtherealErmine@reddit
Fair enough. I made my comment specifically with the idea that most Tesla owners probably just got to a Tesla service center for majority of repairs / maintenance and I've heard it isn't the best experience in the world.

Vandalizing, sure, I can agree with your argument.

TunakTun633@reddit
Itās because they put out more torque. Do we actually know the problem? I suspect the non hybrids are just gonna get it later - like how the hybrid Toyota TTV6s arenāt recalled for engine failure because the motor takes some strain off the engine.
noname87scr@reddit
The biggest issue so far has been transmissions overheating in 4hi when off roading at slow speeds because they donāt have an external transmission cooler. Not really an issue in 4lo though. The early 24s were having failures in the same way tundra engines are where the machining material wasnāt completely cleared out.
SmoothSlavperator@reddit
Do you think they'll make it to 300k with just oil changes?
Opening-Ad8300@reddit

100k is just getting broken in.
noname87scr@reddit
People keep moving the goalposts on when these engines will fail as they reach the miles they initially said with zero issues. First it was they wonāt make it 50k, then they hit 50k with zero issues. Then it was 100k, and theyāre just fine at 100k. Until we see them start actually having issues, thereās no reason to think they wonāt last. Not to mention the 3.5 it replaced seems to be blowing up regularly on owners.
2ClumsyHandyman@reddit
That is not how some people talked about the new turbo 4. They say you need to replace turbo before 100k and then maybe replace hybrid battery as well before 100k. š«

Other than being small and lightweight they are unreliable and huge fuel burners - loved the RX7s back in the day, but no place for a rotary anymore, if there even was back thenā¦
edwbuck@reddit
Mountain_Ad_4670@reddit
They do use a shit ton of fuel. I had a 1993 RX-7 and it is the only car I have ever sold that I regretted. Definitely not a practical car though.
Mine was modified with a single turbo and I would get maybe 16-18 MPG if I could stay out of boost. If I was more consistently in boost I was getting like 8 MPG. It was running very rich though and some of that would have been resolved with a better tune. On the plus side, it would shoot huge fire balls on decel if that is your thing.
Looptydude@reddit
I've never understood the whole "it makes great power for 1.3 literally," like dude you drinking fuel like a c20 with a Chevy big block towing another c20 with a big block.
BRICH999@reddit
But it is a 1.3L making nearly 200hp per liter from the factory without forced induction.Ā Pretty impressive if you ask me.Ā Ā
Also the drag racing boys are down into 5 second quarter miles with that 1.3L so that's kinda neat.Ā Name another race engine making 1500hp per liter.Ā Even top fuel is around 1000-1200hp per liter on nitro
https://youtu.be/p2_TqdqUe_M?
Looptydude@reddit
The whole hp/liter is deceptive, they only account for one face of each rotor, while it technically has 3 faces each and fire more often than a piston in a 4 stroke engine. Displacement means jack if it's using the same amount of air and fuel as a big block. Let's also not completely forget that the fastest drag cars are all supercharged big blocks.
BRICH999@reddit
I'm not disagreeing that they fall into a weird class for sure, but for something the size of a big watermelon with 3 moving internal parts making 2000+hp is pretty impressive to me.Ā Or even 232hp stock
But then again I'm a big fan of weird engines.Ā Should a 2 stroke Detroit diesel have its performance numbers cut in half because it can fire every cylinder every rotation unlike a 4 stroke?
Looptydude@reddit
Essentially yeah, I've always felt that 2 strokes are technically twice the displacement because they fire twice as often. The Detroit diesel also needs a supercharger to function because it can't intake air on its own. I like Detroit diesels and I can appreciate the Wankel, but they are niche, can they make power? Sure, but there is a reason we don't see either of them in modern cars or trucks.
BRICH999@reddit
I fall into camp "it's fine with proper care"
JoeFromStPaul@reddit
I have some experience with a 2nd gen RX-7, NA, auto. It was a fun car, but not much for acceleration and it used oil pretty heavily. The suspension was wonderful and the 9k rpm redline was fun as well.
No-Assumption4145@reddit (OP)
Isn't that a fucking plane?
SkeletorsAlt@reddit
No, youāre thinking of radial. Two totally different things.
KeeganY_SR-UVB76@reddit
Not radial. Rotary. Rotary engines have a crankshaft thatās connected to the chassis of the plane so that the cylinders revolve around it.
SkeletorsAlt@reddit
TIL, but I still suspect that the other commenter was thinking about the still-common radial aircraft engine, not the obsolete-for-100-years rotary aircraft engine.
Boa-in-a-bowl@reddit
That's a radial engine. A rotary engine is the triangle shaped one with a circular block.
VikingLander7@reddit
No, rotary is aircraft engine that crankshaft stays still and cylinders rotate around.
Boa-in-a-bowl@reddit
Confusingly it looks like rotary engines refer to ground applications and radial engines are the same but for aircraft, then there's the Wankel rotary engine which is something completely different that has the triangle shaped thing in a round combustion chamber.

If they were good I feel they wouldāve been kept around. Too many issues from oil, thermals to apex seals for it to be a reliable buy.
L_Outsider@reddit
With the current value of certain collectible cars and the running costs associated to them(like air cooled Porsches or many BMWs) a rotary doesn't seem that bad anymore.
BRICH999@reddit
Problem now is finding anyone willing to touch them.Ā I had an independent shop refuse to replace a headlight for me one time because it was a rotary engine.Ā The second shop that did do it, flooded the engine by moving it cold and shutting it off.Ā Luckily that was a quick fix with no tools.Ā Ā
(Blip throttle to 3k and shut off if engine is not up to temp or you will spend a bunch of time with fuel pump fuse pulled to get engine started)
L_Outsider@reddit
Unfortunately that's a bit of a chicken or egg problem. If the cars were more valuable more shops would maintain them, but they are less valuable partly because it's hard to find a shop to maintain them.
BRICH999@reddit
Yeah it was frusterating and part of why I eventually got rid of it.Ā There were never many rotary techs and there are fewer and fewer each day.Ā Hope Dahm gets more people I know them because the places that do support them are doing wild stuff (mostly PR, Aus and NZ)
BRICH999@reddit
Its fuel economy and emissions that killed it.Ā The apex seals and oil consumption issues were over exaggerated.Ā Ā
Did 117k miles on an rx8 that had excellent hot compression at the end.Ā Had it tested and disassembled to make it into a race engine.Ā After that it was an unreliable mess.Ā Ā
UnluckyGamer505@reddit
Wheres the hate though? Ive only heard good stuff about them in the car community, small, lightweight, good power, cheap because everyone is scared of them... Decently reliable but they need rebuilding every 50-120k km. Thats their biggest issue, apex seals fail and oil consumtion is pretty common.
BRICH999@reddit
Oil consumption is because there is no "lower end" with oil in it.Ā To lubricate piston rings, oil must be added to fuel.Ā Rx8 had an oil metering pump like a snowmobile where it pumped engine oil into fuel to burn.Ā Other option is to delete the OMP and run 2 stroke oil in fuel.Ā Ā
My rx8 I had for 117k miles, ran great, did test and teardown for aggressive porting and it tested excellent.Ā After race build it was a hot mess though
