I finally can upgrade my phone was waiting on this and now its gone......
SF-NL@reddit
A folding phone doesn't sound appealing at all. There's no way that screen stands up to the same amount of use as a regular screen, so it's just something else to break and need fixing or replacing.
letsgoiowa@reddit
They've been out for long enough so that we know it isn't really much of an issue anymore. My wife has shattered 6 iphone screens in the same amount of time I got an accidental key scratch on the outer screen of my old Fold 3. Nothing with my Fold 6 since launch a year and a half ago.
Strazdas1@reddit
I think that says more about your wife than anything. I havent shattered a screen in over 30 years of mobile phone usage, the fold surely wont last that long.
IBringTheHeat2@reddit
Are you using the same phone for 30 years?
letsgoiowa@reddit
What does my first sentence say?
Vb_33@reddit
Samsung Galaxy Fold is entering its 8th generation, and the Galaxy Flip is on its 7th. I personally own a Fold and love it.
crshbndct@reddit
I sell these things.
The in-warranty failure rates on these things are probably 5% ish, and the failure rates on normal phone screens are probably 0.1%
The failure rates on these things long term go much higher than that, so if you are the sort of person who changes their phone once a year, then it will probably be fine for you.
Jeep-Eep@reddit
5%
Am I reading that right? no missing decimals or whatever?
5%
J
F
C
Strazdas1@reddit
btw, 5% is a normal failure rate for consumer electronics in general. Its considered cheaper to just replace it under warranty than ensure endurance if its under that failure rate. Computer hardware tends to have lower rates so us computer enthusiasts are used to that. Fur us the standard failure rate is about 2% based on retailer data.
crshbndct@reddit
I’ll be honest, that is just an educated guess.
I couldn’t tell you actual numbers but I’d say that yeah at least one in twenty has screen issues, it’s usually the screen protector on the flip and the connecting cable on the fold.
We all have opportunity to buy these at extremely low prices at work but I’ve seen everyone switch to Apple over the last 4 years or so.
Foreign_Budget2436@reddit
I guess Samsung should cancel all foldables since it doesn’t sound appealing to you.
JapariParkRanger@reddit
My fold 5 has no issues.
InevitableSherbert36@reddit
Aside from the soft inner screen that's permanently scratchable with just a fingernail.
JapariParkRanger@reddit
I've never had that happen in the last 5 years I've used foldables, even with the s-pen. This is the same thing as range anxiety for EVs.
Middle-Effort7495@reddit

ReasonablePractice83@reddit
Im writing on flip 7 and I love it. The screen is great inside and outside
Soft-Mycologist9908@reddit
It was a design fail from day one. Lot of people cancelled their Initial orders after the final concept came out. The limitation of using only full screen or single screen, compared to the Huawei Trifold model, was already a bad start. Battery prices going up, only surpassed by the prices of Ram memory production, never held the story together. It feels like it was just a concept to show where to start. But definitely not a final product
Gippy_@reddit
The people whining about not being able to use only 2/3rd of the inner screen are a loud minority. I can't imagine a scenario where I would use that over the standard single screen or the full inner screen.
Soft-Mycologist9908@reddit
You are either not informed or simply ignorant. The sales aren't anywhere near compared to what Samsung was projecting. So to lome their own embarrassment, they cut it from the market, playing it safe as a "desirable brand" strategy and making it more rare. Two of my business partners got the Huawei Trifold and they are using it daily in each screen configuration they need. Yes, there is a difference and it's a bug difference. Samsung du**ed up. I'll be switching to Huawei after two decades of using mostly Samsung.
Gippy_@reddit
They sold out in minutes and they don't have the capacity to produce more at the moment.
Huawei is literally banned in North America, and most users in this subreddit are from North America.
Okay bye
Chris_Ngu@reddit

Strazdas1@reddit
I cnanot imagine ordering any device before the concept is out. I understand some people do the stupid thing and preorder it before release, but before the concept? like WTF are they even buying.
ob_knoxious@reddit
At that price it's clear they only had demand for one manufacturing run. Still, I thought it looked incredible. I have a Moto Razr and the "hotdog" fold phones never made sense but this did for me.
Polymira@reddit
My boss got one (he loves these folding phones, I think this one is his third). I played around with it a bit and it's pretty sweet.
yabucek@reddit
Foldables have been out for what, 5 years? This tells you something lol.
I'm a big fan of the concept, but I honestly doubt they can be made durable enough for me to switch.
KrestovLee@reddit
Since we are now on Fold 7 I would say they have been out for what, 7 years. Some people get a new phone every year or two, which is crazy. But if you have the cash to buy the trifold then you just might also have the cash to be one of those people.
I have a Fold5 and it is great. I was worried about the durability but most reviewers said it seemed durable and here we are, over 2 years later and I can see this thing easily lasting a couple more years. I will probably replace it this year because of newer tech and I will be going with another foldable.
Wrathlon@reddit
I'm still rocking a Fold 3 that's so old now I'm getting messages about battery degradation.
I was going to upgrade to the trifold but if they're cancelling it I guess I'm just going to put a new battery into this and continue using it.
Acceptable-End-1311@reddit
Dude my poor Fold 3 went through hell. I got into a car accident where I was read ended and found it in the back seat with the case off lol. The back glass was shattered and the fingerprint scanner stopped working, otherwise it worked perfectly fine for another 3+ years until I got the Fold 7. Dropped it multiple times after the car accident too. I kept waiting for it to die to get an upgrade and it never did.
Wrathlon@reddit
The differences between this and the newer folds are just so infintesimally small I just cant justify the price vs the, what? $100 of parts? to bring mine back to perfect again.
Acceptable-End-1311@reddit
Much better processor on the Fold 7 too which makes a big difference in gaming emulators that I use frequently.
Wrathlon@reddit
Yeah if I used it more heavily for stuff like that I probably would consider it but I have a handheld gaming PC I use for that and what I use my phone for Ive never had a performance issue - just a battery life issue as it aged.
The wider front screen would be nice but note the price of a new fold nice.
Acceptable-End-1311@reddit
Yeah that's fair. I game mostly on PS5 or my phone with a gamepad when I want to play older games that aren't available on console. The price isn't cheap obviously but I just have mine on a monthly payment plan that includes upgrade anytime so I'll just get the new Fold each year unless something better comes out.
Acceptable-End-1311@reddit
I got the upgrade mostly because I switched phone plans but I'd buy it again for the bigger outer screen, way more useable. The lack of under display camera on the inner screen is disappointing though. Plus my battery was barely making it through the day and most of the time I'd have to charge it after getting home from work.
Acceptable-End-1311@reddit
Samsung foldable have been out for almost 7 years and the first mass market foldable came out a year before that. I can't speak for the first 2 models but my Fold 3 was a tank, thing survived a car crash and kept trucking for another 3+ years. I kept waiting for it to die and it didn't. I finally switched to the Fold 7 and I've dropped it multiple times without issues. Check out JerryRigEverything's video on the Fold 7 durability test, even he agrees it's quite durable and the first Fold to survive his bend test flexing the folding screen backwards. If you like mobile gaming at all they're awesome devices and very useful for multi-tasking. Only thing that's disappointing is they removed s-pen support.
Strong_Dragonfly_242@reddit
Either you aren't capable to keep a phone or you never had one
Middle-Effort7495@reddit
They are plenty durable. Some people switch phones twice a year. Third doesn't imply broken third.

Whirblewind@reddit
Plenty of testing shows they really aren't "plenty" durable. In general but also the screen itself. Not sure why you thought here was the place to casually push this nonsense.
420_SixtyNine@reddit
Not sure why you think this is the place to casually push self made up bullshit when you don't even own one. Honor magic v2 has been my most durable phone so far, and it's mostly because the internals are glued shut to be completely water and dust resistant to a certain extent after getting any moisture within the encasing. My note 8 on the other hand died because of water damage in the charging port despite being a higher ip rating, go figure.
There are certainly ways to make these phones just as durable as any other if not more.
jipsydude@reddit
I have had my fold 5 for 2+ years and i have zero issues with it. They are very durable.
Short-Ad1116@reddit
I have one and I am a fan. Sucks if it doesnt go anywhere further than this.
Stingray88@reddit
Yeah this is the first folding smartphone I’ve given any attention to whatsoever. Ultimately, I didn’t buy it because I’m an iOS user with no interest in switching. But I totally agree with you this is the first that’s actually made practical sense.
Acceptable-End-1311@reddit
As a Fold 7 user I was interested but it's a brick folded up and I couldn't imagine dropping an almost $3K phone and breaking it. Especially now you won't even be able to get a replacement if you broke it.
AIgoonermaxxing@reddit
Probably also doesn't help that the only competition for this device, Huawei's triple fold, isn't sold in North America.
whiskeytown79@reddit
Wouldn't that help Samsung in the NA market?
SourcerorSoupreme@reddit
He's saying that there's no reason to compete on this kind of product given that there isn't a competitor to begin with.
Having it just cannibalizes the rest of their sales, and anyone with an iPhone isn't moving away anyway given how indoctrinated/deluded they are already to buy such a phone in the first place.
Creepy_Accountant946@reddit
Are you like 12 writing like that
SourcerorSoupreme@reddit
Found the user of a phone with inferior battery, charging, screen, slow ass animations, and inconsistent UX.
aaronlimitless@reddit
Imagine thinking your better cause or the type of phone you use how lame and childish. Clearly you know nothing about tech. 😂
SourcerorSoupreme@reddit
I never said one is better for having a certain kind of phone.
The intersection of people that lacks reading comprehension, those that can't think critically, and those that are easily indoctrinated is large; and it shows.
Said the person that said nothing about it.
AIgoonermaxxing@reddit
I was moreso thinking that it's the same logic that's led to their regular phones completely stagnating after Huawei's ban. If you look at the jump from say, the S5 to the S9, there were massive improvements in hardware there. You look at the same 4 year jump from the S22 to the S26 and the phones have no meaningful improvements (even the cameras are completely the same) and are even missing features that the S9 had.
While phone tech has definitely stagnated, I think part of the death of their innovation came from no longer having to compete with Huawei in the Android market. Probably just another factor in the discontinuation of this phone, there's no need to establish market share over a rival that only exists overseas.
Middle-Effort7495@reddit
It's very heavy and very thick and it can't really get any thinner because then it hurts to use open. Try clicking on a piece of paper.
Far_lollipop_1518@reddit
Thats a good guess but ultimately not the reason why. Its actually happening because of ai driving up the price of ram and storage, which would make them have to charge more on those phones to turn a profit. If not for Ai the tri fold would still be in production.
reddit_equals_censor@reddit
why demand?
it could instead be, that the failure rates were so high, that they rather stopped making them now to avoid possible class action lawsuits as too few people would cry rightfully about a garbage device.
ob_knoxious@reddit
I mean.... Has there been any reports of failure rates to back this claim up?
spalaz@reddit
I wanted one really bad but they sold out in like 26 minutes and they said they're stopping production? Im piased. It's init foldable i wanted and they shit their pants giving up on it? Its only foldable ive seen when so many online market and auction site scams. Id people are paying 5k (2k over OEM pricing) to get a unopened one then your product has at least SOME demand. Im piased if they don't make a second run on this product. I'll drop 3300 to 3500 but I'm not doing 4 to 5k usd on that thing. Feels like they're either clueless or playing hype games here.
Level0Up@reddit
It's a DMC product, solely there to show the world what their engineers can. Happens all the time in all kinds of product fields with all kinds of brands and businesses.
Nicholas-Steel@reddit
DMC? Not sure what that is but I imagine the point of this was to ensure various patents are enforceable since they had a product available on store shelves that uses the tech.
scytheavatar@reddit
Product made for Dante.
Wayrow@reddit
What does product made for Dante mean?
Strazdas1@reddit
Dante is the protagonist of a videogame Devil May Cry, often abbreviated as DMC.
Wayrow@reddit
What does product made for Dante, the protagonist of a videogame Devil May Cry, often abbreviated as DMC mean?
Strazdas1@reddit
It means that user was making a joke that didnt land.
Nicholas-Steel@reddit
Ah okay.
aaronlimitless@reddit
That’s what they claimed but funny none of that was mentioned upfront. Wasn’t mentioned it was temporary or had a limited availability. As soon as i saw Samsung wasn’t offering Samsung care for it I knew there would be issues.
Jaz1140@reddit
Yes but not many are actually released for any regular consumer to purchase. They are usually kept as concepts for tech expos
SelectTotal6609@reddit
So they released it so that they can say in future events 'we did it'. Funny how Apple Vision Pro lives longer even though that product makes zero sense.
LegoGuy23@reddit
It's a prestige product and technology demonstrator. It's similar to how automakers sell ultra-high end 'halo cars' to illustrate a brand vision and build prestige.
E.g.: Cadillac's Celestiq sedan
thereisnospoon7491@reddit
How well is Cadillac doing financially I wonder?
Vb_33@reddit
Have to imagine GM is doing fine considering all the brands they continue to have (Chevy, GMC, Buick, Cadillac).
Strazdas1@reddit
who even buys them? The four you listed sounds like what you use as examples of why american made cars are awful. GM owns all the worst brands.
996forever@reddit
well enough to join F1
mach1alfa@reddit
Owning a F1 team in itself is a money making move just because the sport is essentially closed to people that are already in it, and with how popular it is nowadays, the value of a team, even if it comes last still keeps increasing. So it’s a lot more profitable than the trifold
996forever@reddit
There is still a huge upfront cost of entry to join in the first place. That’s why Audi had to gut all their other racing endeavours.
mach1alfa@reddit
Yeah, I do understand that, but I still fucking hate Audi for that
996forever@reddit
Blame VAG
lambo hypercar = dead
Porsche hypercar = probably gone from IMSA after 2026
Audi = gone from all other motorsports despite history in rallying and endurance
Never mind all their other brands are all gone from any kind of motorsports apart from Golf in TCR
Middle-Effort7495@reddit
The huawei trifold is launching it's third gen soon
PastaPandaSimon@reddit
It makes a lot of sense actually when new technology is ready for the market, but you prefer not to risk it hitting your main product in case anything goes wrong.
I imagine Samsung will do the same thing with silicon carbon batteries. The first product running it, will likely be something like the tri fold (or some other "niche" line. So in case of issues, they hit a product few users have.
The bonus point is that Samsung can keep it interesting with experiments that people like to see, and entrench the idea that they're still an innovative company without changing much of the hardware of the S series for 5 years :/

Samsung: we made a neat three fold phone
Apple: this not-a-headset is the future of computing
Emmanuell89@reddit
I'd buy it if it was a normally priced phone, even the standard Fold is still very expensive and basic double of any other phone where I live
Gippy_@reddit
Of course it's not going to be as cheap as a regular phone. A regular phone has 1 screen. The Trifold has the equivalent of 4 screens, as well as 2 hinges.
If the Samsung S26 Ultra which is a single-screen phone is $1500, then yes, I can imagine Samsung not making much of a profit for this $2900 novelty phone after R&D and potential warranty claims.

Grippy got the grip on Samsungs nuuuutz
Gippy_@reddit

Cea_king@reddit
The inner screen of my fold 3 (screen protector thing i guess) started to pull up and off after about a year and a half. I ripped it off and sure it "still works" but it was more than enough to make me realize if they hadn't gotten it figured out after all this time, it only makes sense they stop making them.
Raphox88@reddit
I bet it's just even less durable than classic folds, that's why.
bexamous@reddit
What? I wanted this but every time I looked it was sold out. Did they even try to sell any?
Darkknight1939@reddit
I would have bought one, but I didn't want to half my Fold 7's storage. My Fold 7 has about 700GB used out of its 1TB.
Have a 2TB 17 Pro Max, too. I always want the maximum storage.
Can't wait for them to launch a future version with a full run and proper amounts of storage.
UnkeptSpoon5@reddit
What are you possibly doing with that much storage on a phone? I understand speccing out computers with storage (I have 3TB on my desktop mainly just used for net browsing and gaming) but I have 256 on my iphone, and I'm really only using half, less if you remove ridiculously large games I never play.
Is it like thousands of lossless music tracks, an entire months worth of RAW 4k footage, or...? Genuinely curious.
dshudson@reddit
The fact that they only let you have 512 GB is criminal I hated being forced into these stupid devices now that you can't put in a microSD card just think about it the technology is there they could easily put 4 GB in any phone and they put in 512 it's like a punch in the face. It's such a scummy money grab so you'll have to be forced to use the cloud.
Middle-Effort7495@reddit
Shout out to Sony with their micro SD slot and headphone jack
Freak80MC@reddit
Sad to hear, though I can barely afford normal folding phones, let alone a tri fold.
The hardware of a tri fold to me makes more sense than a dual fold, since it unfolds to a better aspect ratio for regular app usage. Whereas the dual folds are specifically power user phones, you need to know you want to multitask to buy one.
But idk if the cost of a tri fold would have ever came down to make these make sense for mass adoption. The dual folds are barely going down in price as is.
It's probably a safer bet to wait for AR glasses to get good to have a bigger screen on the go, than buying a folding phone that folds out into a mini tablet.
bangonthedoortwice@reddit
Kinda ironic though, Samsung ban Huawei the innovative company bringing out trifold years before Samsung yet Huawei were hugely successful as people boycot the Other systems like Samsung because Huawei wouldnt allow the spy software on from Israel/US. AND that just made them (Huawei) even more popular.
Gippy_@reddit
What? The Huawei trifold was hot garbage. 1/3rd of the inner screen was exposed at all times and there were QC issues at launch. It sucked.
bangonthedoortwice@reddit
Considering there were 6 million pre-orders, 700k original sold, ive not saw more than a few negative experiences tbf considering those statistics
Thatguytho97@reddit
So just completely fuck all the people on the east coast???
shroudedwolf51@reddit
I don't know anyone, even people in my support group or DSA chapter that don't see the appeal of an incredibly expensive phone with a massive vulnerability at the hinge. So, two hinges and an even higher price will definitely solve it. Good thinking, Samsung.
Gippy_@reddit
Samsung has had 7 years to refine the folding tech. They're pretty good at it now.
Separate_Pause_9274@reddit
Noooo not the tri fold 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
bravemoney72@reddit
I really think it was a test. We have a ,fold 7 based, working ready for market prototype. Let's test the market. This was the extensively made concept. They will, probably, look for more easily mass produced components or keep it a niche market every few years like a pro version. I love mine but the lack of parts for a fix does worry me a bit. Looking at the 8 or the galaxy Z roll 5G to keep a backup or make the Tri my home tablet, have a fold 6 for a trade in.
Gippy_@reddit
Wait what? I was looking forward to the 2nd iteration of this product. I really hope this isn't just a one-and-done.
Middle-Effort7495@reddit
You can get carrier insurance I think telus has like 7 or 9$ a month for any BYOD android device. Third party insurance like Asurion. Or automatic Credit Card extened warranty depending what your card is.
LegendaryenigmaXYZ@reddit
I wanted to get it, but my phone is still in payments and I wanted to at least get the second generation. Dang :(
Typical-Shopping5563@reddit
I have the z fold 5 and had the 4 before that I love it.The durability assoect I work in construction and drop it all the time and don't even have an otterbox just a middle of the pack case nothing fancy but have never messed anything up on it or scratched it by dropping it so the durability is pretty decent on the folds only issue I've had is the factory big screen screen protector has come off 1 time on each phone but was easily fixed, did the second one myself. But been using them for about 3 years between the 2 maybe alittle longer but I game and watch movies alot on my phone so I love it and was excited for the tri fold bummer there discontinue it. Thought about getting it but i think I'm at my limit with how chunky I want my phone plus the price is alittle much
koolaidismything@reddit
Remember this next time you want to buy a new product line from them.
BurnThisBrother@reddit
Interesting design test for the niche market that has $2899 for a phone.
I'll keep my eye on the traditional book fold style phones and might make a jump to one of those in late 2026 or next year depending on how the tech improves.
sowee@reddit
That one-way only fold didn't inspire much confidence that it was a mass market product. Hope they revisit the double fold ideia soon.
