Asking price 20k
Afraid_Stuff_History@reddit
This came to mind.
TheBarghest7590@reddit
On one hand, I don’t think there’s any law yet that would prevent someone from having a fake Shahed…
On the other… at this point given how prominent they are I imagine it would be the aircraft equivalent of brandishing a replica firearm in public and you would be at risk of getting into deep shit.
It’s not quite like your random DJI Mavic or scale model jet… there’s no way to tell that apart from a real Shahed when it’s airborne and that’s a dodgy situation to put yourself in given current events.
deeeevos@reddit
Yeah, I imagine this guy going for a test flight and causing a national panic. Especially with the recent reports of Iran planning a drone attack and all
LightningFerret04@reddit
I wonder if the average joe knows what a Shahed drone even looks like
I know drone strikes are in the news and everything, but I wonder how many have actually seen the drones used for the attacks in the news enough to recognize it as a foe vs just some “triangle RC drone plane thing”
One of my friends sent me a photo of an L-39 flying over and asked what it was, thinking it was a USAF fighter
trainbrain27@reddit
Military hardware is second nature to us redditors, so it's easy to forget that the average person probably only knows the shape of a F-16 and one or two of our drones.
And the F-35, of course.
sintaur@reddit
If you have just the standard commercial drone pilot license, it would have to weight under 55 pounds, or you need to do more paperwork. A Shahed drone is 300+ pounds depending on the model.
RizzOreo@reddit
So what you're saying is I should just buy a Geran
UnmannedComposites@reddit
It’s 106 dry weight.
youtheotube2@reddit
RC aircraft are often heavier than 55 pounds too
cholz@reddit
It just needs a fluorescent orange nose cone.
TacTurtle@reddit
Stencil "inert" on it with a blue nose cone.

Ohh I definitely need to use that sub more. Half my posts are random shit I see on Fb lol
Limekill@reddit

TheHappyMasterBaiter@reddit
By that point is it really RC anymore?
deeeevos@reddit
RC just means Remote Control. So unless he's riding on top, yeah it's still RC
TheManMachine78@reddit
Obviously, he sits in the nose cone! That's what a guidance section is for, right?
Shaun_Jones@reddit
Honestly, it could carry a small child. The warhead on a Shahed is about 110 pounds.
FhuckNorris247@reddit
Pretty sure actual Shahed drones have programmed gps locations in them, and are not actually remote controlled
TheHappyMasterBaiter@reddit
What I’m saying is that the line between it and an actual Shahed is heavily blurred by this point. The difference would be that the actual one has the 4 stroke engine but both would probably be able to carry the explosive payload wherever.
AyeBraine@reddit
Does this have a 2-stroke?
gurgle528@reddit
it’s actually radio control! so as long as you’re using a radio to control it it’s still RC, although at some point it does lose meaning lol
formulaonelover44@reddit
lol 20k? Little steep more like 10 tbh
disobedientavocado45@reddit
There were drones stolen from a base in tx last week, and the jedi drones are very very similar to the shahed... not saying but just saying.
ThaddeusJP@reddit
Kidding aside hobby flying and Drones days are numbered.
Someday someone is gonna strap a pipe bomb or Tennerite to a drone or old ass rc plane and successfully kill someone with it and then it's game over. FAA will require licensure out the ass and anyone buying anything, and you will go on a regersty.
Home made stuff will made totally illegal.
gguy128@reddit
No 2A equivalent for drones 😔

Hadrollo@reddit
Y'know, I actually considered making a knock-off Shahed. I have most of the mechanical and electronic parts, and a 3D printer that could make moulds for the fiberglass. Then I decided that this is a level of "detained for two days and make news headlines" stress that I didn't need.
Still, my son's just turned 18. I figure I should build a drone with him, it'll teach him valuable skills for his young adult life. Namely; the ones that'll keep him off the front lines when WW3 breaks out.
flynnfx@reddit
You're probably on the NSA watch list with this very post.
Hadrollo@reddit
I'd hope not.
I've done plenty of dodgier shit than this. I'd be disappointed if I've gone so long without getting on a watchlist.
flynnfx@reddit
Be careful what you wish for, you may just get it.
Clear-Bee4118@reddit
So I might as well monetize my masturbation if someone is watching anyway then?

JPJackPott@reddit
Personally I think it would be more fun to make one in a slightly comic missile shape. Pointy nose cone, fins at the back. Maybe some cotton wool smoke.
Imagine seeing a ‘missile’ zooming around your neighbourhood chasing someone’s dog
Gquma@reddit
I heard its made out of sheet metal?
Hadrollo@reddit
It is. However, I can't stamp sheet metal. I can make fiberglass.
The intent was never to build an actual Shahed 136, just something that looks and flies like one.
Gquma@reddit
Very cool

Historical-Tea-7445@reddit
Damn i think iran makes them for less.
MightySouthB@reddit
Aren't they like 50k a piece? Which in ordinance talks is already insanely cheap
UnmannedComposites@reddit
Material cost and labor drive the price. Epoxy carbon fiber and fiberglass are about 50% the cost, labor is 20-30% electronics around 20%
-________02________-@reddit
Russian ones are 50k and supposedly cost optimized from the original version.
MajesticNectarine204@reddit
Yeah, optimised for the kleptocracy with an automatic kick-back dispenser.

No. Theres a mock technical school where they force the students to make them. Alabuga polytech.
Revolutionary-Wash88@reddit
And funnel the profits. No one is arguing
RogerianBrowsing@reddit
The Russians have also added upgrades on them, things like thermal cameras and AI automated tracking/targeting of moving targets for example. It adds cost.
That said it’s amazing the price to performance ratios that Iran produces

Now that you mention it, it would just look a bit out of place on a F150
Tough-Marsupial-6254@reddit
Is that an old volkswagen motor strapped to it?
NotSure2505@reddit
It raises an interesting question: At what point does an RC plane become classified a weapon?
Since the Shaheed drone is sourced from mostly hobby RC materials (why it's so cheap) Motor here. and here. The rest is just servos, electronics and foam.
yourboibigsmoi808@reddit
It stops being an RC toy when it’s packed full of explosives???
Just because it looks like its military counterpart doesn’t mean it is.
random_username_idk@reddit
To be the devil's advocate, your argument is similar to saying that a gun isn't a weapon until it's loaded with ammunition.
Making explosives is trivial for someone who is determined and a drone is the ideal delivery method. It doesn't take much effort to combine the two.
yourboibigsmoi808@reddit
Not in the slightest
It’s like saying an Ar-15 is a military rifle
When an AR-15 and M4 series of rifles are aesthetically similary yet mechanically different
One gun is a civilian rifle made for sporting purposes and self-defense/hunting
The other is a military platform created to focus on volume of fire and offensive capabilities as a machine gun
The statement still holds true
GI_HD@reddit
Not all AR-15 are M4s but all M4s are AR-15s.
yourboibigsmoi808@reddit
Again we’re close here but still not accurate. Both platforms share parts and origins yet are still their own distinct and own categories.
GI_HD@reddit
Ar-15 is a product line (the civilian semi-auto rifles you mentioned) aswell as a family/lineage of Ar-15 type rifles originating from the original Stoner design at Armalite which later developed into the M16/M4 aswell as the civilian versions.
To make a clumsy apology, humans are not the same as modern apes but they do share a common ape ancestor.
yourboibigsmoi808@reddit
Yeah that works like how Humans and apes are distinctly different while we originated from a common ancestor
Sorta how like Ar-15s and M4 originated from the Ar-10
NotSure2505@reddit
You might want to study up on M4s and ARs. M4 is just the US military designation of the version of AR-15 they buy. I think you're meaning is suggest that the M4 is a "fully automatic military issue", but there are semi-auto M4s owned by civilians because the M4 is just an AR-15 with a grenade launcher mount. Just like an M9 is a Beretta 92FS, but not all Beretta 92s are M9s. Or the M11 is a SIG P228.
yourboibigsmoi808@reddit
This is objectively not true. The Ar-15 and M4 platform are objectively not the same platform. It’s not just a name change. Although they might share parts compatibility, the M4 is a “select fire machine gun. It’s not just a mere name change. Civilians own Ar-15s that can be stylized as M4s but if they wanted an actual M4 with the third whole and auto sear you need a machine tax tamp and ATF approval. No idea if you’re just rage baiting or serious.
No modern competent military organization uses an Ar-15 full stop. They use the AR’s bigger select fire derivatives such as M16, M16A2, M4A1 etc
NotSure2505@reddit
So an unloaded AR-15 is no longer a weapon?
yourboibigsmoi808@reddit
No an Airsoft/bb gun Ar-15 is not a weapon unless you can stripe the whole thing out and replace it with real components. If we’re using examples
A Toyota Helix is just a reliable dependable pickup truck, unless you slap some armor and a Heavy machine gun in the back then it becomes a technical used in combat operations
Is a Toyota pickup a weapon?
NotSure2505@reddit
Agreed, but what do you think would happen if this guy started flying this "RC Plane" in the DC area in Class G (unrestricted) airspace?
LoopsAndBoars@reddit
It would likely be vaporized and disintegrate once it breaches a predefined parameter. Posts like this are how the world becomes aware, by design of the powers that be.
NotSure2505@reddit
I specifically said Class G airspace. I know what happens if it strays any earlier in the alphabet.
RamTank@reddit
Yeah like a normal RC plane is a toy, but when you tape a PG-7 warhead onto it it becomes a weapon. Pretty straightforward.
WhoCaresBoutSpellin@reddit

Haven't seen those in an American school yet...
ACCESS_DENIED_41@reddit
That 5 cylinder one is really cool
mcnabb100@reddit
It’s not necessarily considered a “weapon”, but if it weighs over 55lb there are some extra hoops you’re supposed to jump through.
https://www.faa.gov/licenses_certificates/aircraft_certification/aircraft_registry/ua
of_the_mountain@reddit (OP)
This drone is listed at 106 lbs for what it’s worth
LoopsAndBoars@reddit
At the sample point a torx bit becomes an assault projectile, or a belt loop becomes a machine gun called a bump stock.
The answer is subjective, and as needed.
Law is entirely ambiguous by design. Unless you have the money to fund the impending contention; stay out of the ballroom.

Great_White_Sharky@reddit
How does it land?
Plump_Apparatus@reddit
Land?
Great_White_Sharky@reddit
haha funny get it because its a replica of a kamikaze drone. But i genuinely want to know
klonkish@reddit
Why do you think they're designed to land? In what scenario do you envision it happening?
Great_White_Sharky@reddit
Why do you think some random John Doe is selling an actual Shahed on Facebook 😂 Are you drunk?

ammit_souleater@reddit

Username_St0len@reddit
that was i was getting at with u/WhoCaresBoutSpellin
klonkish@reddit
It wouldn't be a replica if it had landing gear.
youtheotube2@reddit
Nobody said it’s a perfect replica
klonkish@reddit
Well the fact that it doesn't have landing gear kind of means it is?
youtheotube2@reddit
Why do you think it doesn’t have landing gear? Besides the fact that actual shaheds don’t have landing gear. Just because it’s transported in a wooden jig doesn’t mean it doesn’t have landing gear
klonkish@reddit
There's no indentation in the fuselage for the gear to come out of the body.
of_the_mountain@reddit (OP)
I fully agree it does not appear there is landing gear, maybe they do belly landings or maybe it is just well hidden. Not really sure but I assume it’s reusable somehow
youtheotube2@reddit
You can’t see the entire bottom of the fuselage, and I think it’s pretty likely that the wooden jig would attach right over where the landing gear is since that’s where the structure is designed to handle that load
Great_White_Sharky@reddit
The fact that it doesnt have an actual bombload kinda means it isnt?
RamTank@reddit
For a non-boomy replica, you'd probably want to fly it multiple times.
sentinelthesalty@reddit
With a bang!
AyeBraine@reddit
Some large drones have a parachute system for landing.
allamerican37@reddit
Large net raised above the ground catches it. You lower net after. Only hillybilly rig I could think of would be a net over one the trampolines with the tall sides. Obviously remove trampoline portion. You would have to cut throttle and glide it in.
Firestar_119@reddit
belly land and hope the prop doesn't shatter
CPTherptyderp@reddit
Nose first
DarkKnightTazze@reddit
Land that thing on the white house front lawn. That would get a few laughs and get you a 20 year prison sentence.

RogerianBrowsing@reddit
lol nah, I don’t have that kind of spending money to burn. I just looked into it a bit when some people were making various claims like that China was producing shaheds for Iran and Russia or the LUCAS for the US.
Turns out a flying wing design tends to look like other flying wings. 🤷♂️

Surprisingly difficult to register
of_the_mountain@reddit (OP)
Ah interesting. Does that explain the lack of landing gear? What is the plan there?
UnmannedComposites@reddit
Belly landing and lack of full vertical stabilizers can be landed with a good pilot. We also considered net capture. Half scale only broke the nose on belly land
UnmannedComposites@reddit
We’ve considered it.
