So the scenario is you are a armed forces of Ukraine soldier and you have a few options of what primary weapon you would choose for combat. I’m curious to what you all will pick, Слава Україні 🇺🇦

Somewhere in Ukraine, there are broken supply officers.

How many service rifles do Ukraine use now? They got the UAR-15, UAR-10, Malyuk, AK 74, AKM, Type 56, M70, VZ 58, Bren 2, Grot, Tantel, Tavor, C7, C8, Henel MK 556, CR308, M4, M16, M14, G3, FAL, FNC, F-2000, SCAR, 416s, G36ks, AR-70/90, Cetme-L, HK 433, FAMAS, SIG 516, krinkov, some new Aussie AR 15 and whatever they can capture from the Russians and grab out of gun cabinets. their clerks all deserve free drinks for life.

If I'm picking a fighting rifle. Probably the last Pic with the ak74 with suppressor, side rail adapter and what appears to be an eotech or something similar. I'm familiar with the platform and the 5.45 ammo is lighter than 7.62x39. So I could carry more. The few interviews I've watched literally say the more ammo you can carry the better. The AK12 is cool with out a doubt and would have been my choice if it could just appear in my gunsafe, but I've heard build quality was a mixed bag and would want to take the chance for a fighting rifle. The other rifles, that I don't reconize also cool and would also be happy if they manifested in my gunsafe, but I wouldn't want to deal with the unfamiliar manual of arms if I'm in a war zone.

Do you know what optic that is? It’s crazy.
View on Reddit #80874363

Brandon_awarea@reddit

Even if it had a Walmart airsoft red dot I’d take it. Worst case I remove it and use irons. An optic is great but if your gun jams you are fucked. The ak 12 is the only other one that I’d consider but I haven’t heard the greatest things about it.
View on Reddit #80899865

VegetableDig7829@reddit

AK12 had a rough start but its later variants (23’ and onward, they’ve updated it a few times since 2019) are pretty good. Ukrainians capture and use them fairly often but I wouldn’t consider it a commodity.

AK74/74M with the KPYK attachments (the one in the pic is *not* Zenitco). Malyuk is also a good contender, but then you're dealing with bullpup ergonomics. AKM has been out of service for a reason, conversion kits would have me iffy due to reliability concerns, and russian AK-12s have had some teething issues as well I wouldn't want to risk dealing with. If I could choose something not in the picture though, I'd choose some AR variant or anything else that takes STANAGs like the CZ Bren 2/3.

AK-12 it's just a 74 with extra steps, but it can mount attachments easier.
View on Reddit #80907135

MlackBesa@reddit

Hmmm not easy. If we’re strictly limited to those 6 I’m guessing AK74 + Zenitco. I was hesitating to pick the AK12 but their quality is inferior and they can have trouble properly holding zero with optics.

ShiftyLookinCow7@reddit

AK 12 or AK 74. I'll take the 12 if it's the updated model
View on Reddit #80862489

Few_Carpenter_9185@reddit

Of these options? The 74s with Zenitco optic. Second the straight 74 with irons. The sight radius is ass, a Valmet or Galil-like peep at the rear dustcover that's not wobbly would be a huge plus, assuming you're still without optics in 2026. And I'd much prefer 5.56 to 5.45, but it would do. The plain 7.62 AKM is a distant third, but hittability on fleeting targets with a flatter trajectory and more forgiving battle-zero on 5.45 in the 74 wins. Plus, the underfolder is *terrible.* There's a reason all the AK family went side-folder. The underfolder was 100% "better than nothing" and because 7.62x39 was way better than any pistol caliber SMG pushed into a vehicle crew PDW role. The "real answer," as others mentioned, outside of specific DMR needs, is an M-16 family of rifle or one of the well executed AR-18 systems. And if one looks at anybody with *money* and who wasn't *beholden to prior tradition,* and "not invented here" problems, it's what most nations choosing or changing service rifles are settling on. If you have ever "runned & gunned" whatsoever and were expected to do mag changes, and maybe even *hit something * you probably know why this is true. That could be an American 3-gun match, a live ammo carbine class, or hell... even an Airsoft skirmish/milsim, where you only run 30 BB magazines for realism. I actually *like bullpups* I own a TAR-21, VHS, RDB, and an AUG, but even when you "train that mag change into irrelevance," *you are still having to overcome something.* There's a ballistic advantage in velocity (in 5.56 at least, less in 5.45 and 7.62...) to having an 18"/450mm, or even a 20" 500mm barrel, and having an overall length that's substantially shorter than a standard layout 16" barrel, or even a 14.5" 368mm barrel M4, but if you are going shorter, the benefits of the bullpup compromise vanish. Realistically, unless there's hostages/noncombatants, even in MOUT, you should be tossing explosives into/at structures, not sweeping the pie. A rock-in AK mag bullpup? *Jesus wept.* At least those AK bullpup kits look sort of cool, rather than the chunky late-1990s US gun magazine advertising ones.
View on Reddit #80848427

LobsterManCommander@reddit

Yeah, I'm surprised that the tar-21/Fort-221 didn't make a appearance in this list. It has to be more common then that bullpup ak chassis thing.
View on Reddit #80860519

Few_Carpenter_9185@reddit

My TAR-21 is actually my favorite bullpup. It had better be, seeing as I stuck an additional $400 of Geissele trigger parts in it. But, she's a heavy girl for what she is, a 5.56. She gets away with being 1.5 - 2 lbs. heavier than a ballpark comparable AR when handling it. Because the bullpup CG tucks tighter into your body, and it has way less leverage or moment-arm when shouldered unsupported/offhand. But none of that helps you when you're just rucking it when slung. The short OAL, if tight to your body might tire you a fraction of a percentage less, but it's not noticeable. As the saying goes, "Ounces make pounds, pounds equals pain..."
