I even go slow on large curbs.
No WAY my knees surviving that jump.
Probably why they hurt now.
From doing that stuff when we we young lads and thinking we’re invincible!!
No. In my 40s. I still think I can. But that’s not happening. I think twice before jumping down 3 feet. And I’m in good shape. I ask myself, is it worth it to save 2 seconds? Answer is always “nope”
I was swinging alongside my kid at the playground and got extremely nauseated within the first 30 seconds. Used to thrill seek and spend so much time on amusement park rollercoasters in my teens. No more.
Same! I had my kid just before turning 40... they will be 15-ish when I am 55-ish... but I WANT to be the fun parent that goes on rides with them... pray for me because while I am sure I won't regret spending time with them, my body will regret every moment lol
This 1000%. I always Dramamine up before amusement parks and it works great. In TN this week for Spring Break and did a couple of mountain coasters with my 14 year old daughter without Dramamine. I paid for that, had to go back to the cabin and lay down in bed for a couple of hours afterwards 🤢
My nuerologist says you can't ride any rides! You have them built in! Vertigo, dizziness, migraines, intracranial hypertension, and more. Guess I have my own theme park?
I’ve never been concussed. I did experience vertigo for a couple weeks when I was in my early 20s which was never explained. It just went away on its own.
It isn't a height chart at the amusement park now but an age chart for us. You have circled the sun 48 times? Oh this ride is going to fuck you up way worse than when you were a youth.
Wow, same! I tried to play on the swings the other day and I didn’t make it for 5 minutes before I was dizzy and so nauseous that I had to stop. WTF! I loved the swings when I was a kid!
I got my daughter a trampoline for Christmas and I’ve been trying to do some of the tricks I did when I was a kid. The land on my back and bounce back up feels like someone kicked my soul out of my body
Was at the playground with my daughter wondering this exact same thing recently. Now it pops up in my feed.
Shit gets creepier by the day. Wish I still had a moto razr.
Just did it yesterday at the park with my son! But my "Jump" off was more of a "look I'm standing now rather than groaning while getting out of the swing"
I think I could still do this. I remember I did it as a teenager and my leg muscles weren't used to the strain so I completely burned them out and they were so sore for days after.
so the other year I, a 40+ year old man, decided to show my nieces at a garden BBQ how to do a cart wheel.
I haven't stretched or done any exercise in like 20 years I guess. not fat, not fit either. ..anyway a cartwheel is just like riding a bike.
so I just get off my lawn chair, make some space and do it.
to my credit I did it ok.
all my illusions disappeared the moment my first hand hit the floor though. that pain all up my arm was like an lightning bolt, then the other arm hit as my lower back and hips felt the force of the transition through them as momentum fling them up and over. my neck screamed in agony like a brief nova of pain, and then just as swiftly my feet were over the top and coming down.
my wrists were screaming but the worst was yet to come, as my legs came down together my ankles and knees bore the brunt of 20 years of neglect and made sure to report their displeasure with aplomb. I snapped upright, stunned at my poor choices and total lack of awareness of my capabilities, but was met with raucous applause from those present. I did my customary bow after doing something stupid for their entertainment and collected my beer that I'd asked my wife to hold and then spent the rest of the week stiff.
the lesson here is the brain might remember how to do something but the body sure as fuck doesn't want it
I did this last year, I love swing sets! First time I miscalculated and went higher rather than further and had to roll out of it. Kinda scary amount of hang time haha. Second attempt was much better and controlled. After that no problem. I'm big and not exactly athletic and didn't really feel like I was in danger of serious injury, but splinters from the wood chips was a real concern!
This would result in my imminent death. Not only am I gonna break all of my joints from the hips down, I am also probably going to go face first into the ground, knock myself out, and suffocate in the dirt.
Less than a year and yes!
I may have broken my femur tripping over a dog bed in the garage after this, so, surly my new titanium femur will be cool and my joints weren't involved.
I stuck the landing so many times, but the last time I attempted it was probably around 1992 or so. 3rd grade, maybe?
Anyway, that last time was the last time because when I landed, my chin hit my knee and I busted my lip open. Blood everywhere. The school nurse gave me some ice and gauze, and then she sent me back to class. I still have a small bump on the inside of my bottom lip.
I haven't jumped off a swing for a few years, but this past weekend I was able to finally be able to squat a little bit over my body weight. That makes me think that my knees could handle landing off of a jump from a swing, as long as I land well.
Didn’t survive, no. Also didn’t survive when I wanted to jump into a big piles of leafs. Last time I did it before that time, it was such a fluffy landing. The last time was not. At all.
Last time I did this I entered another dimension from the sound/pain of the cracks from my tailbone to the top of my neck. I was 32 and trying to impress my kids…. PSA if you’re not a kid don’t do kid stunts.
I remember the day so well because it was embarrassing.
I was in 3rd grade and was somehow able to snag a swing on the new playground after lunch at school. I was on my last dismount before my turn was up and decided to go big. I jumped from the swing and landed on my feet. The crowd was bigger and I was soaking in the attention. Until I realized my shorts were still attached to the chain of the swing. It was just me in my undies while my shorts flapped in the breeze of the swing chain.
So yeah, never again.
Was in my early teens, saw a girl I really liked and thought it'd be really cool and impressive to her If swing high and then sail over a waist high metal fence at the park.
As I got to the swings peak, I let go and was catapulted into the air and landed one leg on top of the railing and the other stretched out behind.
Needless say, she asked If I was okay but a longing concern, holding hands and eternal bliss was never ever on the cards 🤷🏾♂️.
Just looking at this makes my knees scream in terror.

The last time I did this was twenty-odd years ago in my early twenties. I did not consider how being full-grown would result in much more force my legs had to absorb when landing, compared to when I'd jump off the swings as a kid. I never went to the doctor for it, but I'm pretty sure I got at least a stress fracture in my heel from it.
I would do better with the backflip off the swing. I did that more as a kid and it didn't propel you forward as much so it would be more of a straight down landing.
Take it from a 46yr old mom - do not attempt to do this - your ass is too old and it will take a month for your knees to recover- I did this a month ago
I know someone who dislocated her shoulder doing this. To be fair, we were all doing it, trying to see who could launch themselves the farthest. One of us dislocated their shoulder.
Foeget jumping out--I can't even swing any more. Developed that middle age/middle ear thing that gives vertigo with such motion. Breaks my heart. Can't do roller coasters for the same reason--I'll be nauseated for two hours afterwards--and I was a big fan. 😥😢😭
Probably been 10 years since I jumped off . I swing every so often but not very high because I get dizzy. My knees and ankles would not survive a jump.
I’m picturing myself, after doing this, rolling around on the ground, groaning in pain staring up at the sky pleading with God…begging for the strength to get up.
Shit. I did this once in third grade. We were seeing who could jump the farthest. Well I wasn’t about to lose so a swung as high as I could, I swear I had those chains parallel to the ground and I jumped. Landed flat on my back and knocked the wind out of myself and that was probably the last time I’ve done it.
The year I turned 30 I hopped over the side of a pickup truck. Something I wouldn't have thought twice about ten years (and 50 lbs) prior.
Cracked my femur, tore an ACL, and blew out my cartilage.
I did it last year to impress my grandson. His mom/my daughter didn’t approve. Knees were ok. You have to spread out the impact and roll to your shoulder. My grandson was squeaking he was laughing so hard.
I did this like 2 years ago at about the age of 44. I landed fine, but I felt nauseous. Nothing came up, but seriously not sure why not.
Maybe it was adrenaline (not likely - wasn’t enough of that if there was any at all); maybe it was the launching through the air (maybe, really not sure). Maybe a 44 year old woman shouldn’t be jumping off swings because she’s 44, and those jumps are meant for the youth.
Just not the same…
Did it with my kids a few years back. I stopped not because of my knees, but because my pocket knife will get caught and come flying out of my pocket. It usually lands open under the swings, which is wildly not what I want.
So I stopped.
I could still do it. My knees are in remarkably good shape for as much as I run and abuse them.
I love swinging! When I take my daughter to a playground I don’t sit on a bench and listen to adults gossiping, I swing like a child. I can still do this backflip thing I learned when I was 10, makes my daughter think I’m cool
Yesterday at the park with my daughter, after we had three consecutive sprint races. I was good! I’m celebrating my ability now, because I never know when it could be taken away (1983). 😭
About 20 years. My stomach wouldn’t even be able to handle swinging high enough to do this. I can’t even sit on a porch swing without getting nauseous.
About 3ish months. The ground matters. Squishy rubber playgrounds and regular grass/dirt are the best. Hard concrete or squishy sand fucks up my knees and ankles.
My sister (b. 1981) broke her arm doing this when she was 9. Then 2 weeks later I (b. 1984) got a black eye on the same swing set, doing the same thing. Pretty sure neither of us have attempted it since.
Vertigo ended my swinging days about 10 years ago, but I can still vividly remember being mid-air with the ground rushing towards me after doing this in 5th grade on the elementary school's big swing set. I was seriously second-guessing my decision-making. I landed mostly unscathed, just knocked the wind out of myself.
I have a pick up with a little it of a lift… I jumped off the tailgate barefoot onto the concrete driveway. I felt that shock from my butt crack to the base of my skull. My brain might be 26 but my joints are 46 for sure.. Whew!!
I’m in the minority here but since I’ve done stunt work from my late 20s all the way up until late last year, I’m sure I could still do it. Like I said, I’m probably in a small percentage of folks our age though lol.
We used to move a picnic table up to the park swings, sit on the swing, and jump off the top of the picnic table so we got higher faster and then we'd jump.
The 80s and early 90s were basically feral kids doing dangerous stuff with no grown ups anywhere to stop us. If I did that today, I'd be hurting for days.
I’ve done this not too long ago and honestly it wasn’t the jump that was terrible but the act of swinging back and forth made me so queasy to my stomach.
I did this maybe two weeks ago but I show my kid. Not something I would do regularly but only thing that happened was I farted when I landed. Which made my kids want me to do it again.
I'm pretty sure the last time I tried this was in a year that started with "19", and for the sake of my ACLs I don't plan on breaking that streak anytime soon.
About 3 months ago. Had the kids at the playground and had to show them how it was done.
And yes my knees did survive!
The harder part is the endurance. Over short periods I can still do a lot that I used to. Over longer stretches, no chance. And the recovery time and soreness lasts longer for sure.
Muscle and skeleton wise I’d be fine. I’ve had my bell rung too many times where I can already see the POTS stars in the corners of my vision before I’d even hit the ground.
Funny enough I did just sit on a swing like that this past weekend for the first time in as long as I can recall. I did not do that. I’m through taking unnecessary risks.
My 38 year old brother did this on new years day this year. His ankle is shattered. I shudder to think what it would do to my 46 year old joints. Plus I fractured my back in September and am not allowed to do active things currently.
I'm currently 40 and I did this at 39 years old and am no longer living. This post come from beyond the grave and the religion that got the "afterlife" right is legit surprising. Lol
A long time, and yes. After decades of skating and snowboarding, I can still take a drop. Heck, just finally got backside threes this year at the tender age of 43.
Actually did it two days ago at the park cuz my 17 and 11 year old daughter's didnt believe that we did and my 6 year old son said that it was impossible. I went as high as I could, just like back in the day, jumped off, landed appropriately and the laid down for about 15 minutes to recover from the cardio of swinging and to wipe the sweat off of myself... I do not remember getting sweaty on the swings.. am I the only one? Lol
Last time I did this was 1980 something when the swing seat broke at the apex of my swinging. I crash landed on all fours with two broken wrists as souvenirs.
Last Autumn. My younger daughter, who recently turned 12, still really enjoys going to the playground and park. Now, I would absolutely NOT do this on asphault/pavement! But into wood chips, yes. Superhero landing.
Damn.
I think ours were gravel.
I've seen now where some use some sort of soft woodchip type stuff that seems designed to absorb bad landings. I'm amazed we still have playgrounds with how litigious society has become
44 now, maybe a year ago with the kids at the playground, and yes my knees survived just fine. What are other people doing to their knees that they are that shot?
Did this last fall to show my kids. I went for height and speed without really thinking about it, but there was definitely a moment of doubt during the dismount.
Literally more than four decades. No, my knees, legs, feet, hips, or any other major joint would survive the landing without some kind of impingement. :p
Last time I jumped off a swing was 15 years ago. If I did that today, I ×might× be able to crawl away, but I would definitely need a ride to the hospital.
I was never the kid jumping off swings, because I knew that I'd hurt myself. I was...rather fragile through the joints particularly growing up. I was forever injured for one reason or another. It was years before I found out I have hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. Now it all makes sense.
You know that scene at the end of Death Becomes Her when Madeline and Helen fall on the church steps and shatter into a million pieces?

Anyway, that’s what would probably happen if I launched myself out of a swing at 43.
January 2019. Avoided a “special needs” child who walked in front of me on the swing. Ended up tucking and rolling. Got A LOT of compliments being able to avoid a catastrophic injury to a child and myself by multiple people. I’ll never do it again and didn’t mean to then. It would never happen again in a zillion years the way it did…
Bows out with uncertain dignity.

Funny you posted this, I was just talking with a co-worker who's around the same age about swinging as high as you can and jumping off. I didn't like doing it much, and then in 3rd grade a classmate broke his angle jumping off, and I felt justified in not liking it, and didn't tempt fate with high jumps anymore.
As I am now, I could jump, but holy shit it'd be risky. I've sprained both ankles, so that'd be my most likely to occur injury, roll an ankle like an MFer.
In grade 8 I was in the hospital for a busted ankle. The kid next to me had 2 broken arms. He fell from the monkey bars and broke one arm. a week later he went back, fell and broke his other arm.
My first thought was why limit the worries to knees when ankles are also wonky these days… I’m sure I’d also hurt my back or neck and possibly a bonus wrist injury
Man, we used to essentially back flip out.
Not completely - just lean back, and pull back on the chains, and pretty much stay in the seat until you were upside down, let go and complete the flip.
The simple thought of that now is absolutely terrifying and would threaten my very existence if tried today.
Tried a couple years ago. While the goopy CPU running things is all fucked up and the vessel is a mess, it's proven still durable.
Secret is to not get height, but distance. It's easier to roll and flop than to absorb gravity + carriage weight.

Was babysitting a kid and did the “underdog” swing and the kid lost his mind in excitement. He love it and wouldn’t let me stop. The best part of swinging!
Arches, ankles, knees, hips, back, neck, probably face when it plants violently into the mud.
But those seconds of airtime would almost be worth it.
(almost)
30+ years since I last did that. The time I did it I remember feeling like lightning had struck my ankles when I landed.
I would absolutely break every bone from the waist down if I tried that today.
My kid's 11, so a few years.
I snowboard and used to enjoy the jumps, but now the knees are the first thing to feel it. Worst thing you can do is nothing... took me until 38 or so to realize the importance of stretching. I go through phases: did gymnastic strength training at one point, bodyweight exercise after that, and most recently obsessed over Knees Over Toes Guy.
About three years ago, but I deliberately didn’t jump from that high.
I run regularly, so my knees are simultaneously used to that kind of impact, but also hurt from it…
I tried to show my kids how to do it. They were not interested at all. That was probably about 10 years ago.
It's interesting how play changes or evolves. I remembered that when I was their age I would purposely try to go as high as possible
The last time I did this was when I was 11, I was wearing an unbuttoned long sleeve shirt over my t-shirt and it got caught in the chain loops as I was leaving the swing in mid-air. The conflicting forces resulted in my getting yanked facefirst into the mulch underneath, and it never seemed nearly as fun after that.
Four summers ago. During COVID.
Age of 45.
Not nearly as high as the picture. Just a tiny little hop.
Yup. Went about as good as you'd expect. lol I survived but was thankful I didn't jump off like when I was a kid and the swing was almost parallel to the ground. I swear we used to get like 20ft of distance and I height of 8 ft (maybe that was only in my child's mind, but it WAS high and far).
Proud to report that I could still manage the monkey bars but my 72 year old father could not. lol
I remember one time when I was a kid, my friends told me I was too chicken to jump off the swing so I jumped. They were shocked because I had jumped higher than either of them ever had. Who's chicken now?
